The show follows Harry Slate, an old-school and outspoken car wash owner, who has a lot of soul searching to do when his estranged son, who left for New York as a teenager, temporarily moves back home to Mobile, Alabama as a proud, trans woman, Desiree. Harry and the people in town, especially in church, are forced to confront their own biases as Desiree works to repair her fraught relationship with her father. This also puts a strain on her relationship with the choir director, Desiree’s closeted gay best friend, Louis and Louis’ mother. Laverne Cox as Desiree Slate, a determined, proud, trans woman George Wallace as Harry Slate, Desiree's father Jay Wilkison as Mack, ruggedly handsome and from the wrong side of the tracks. Mack is Harry’s employee and confidant at the car wash and the single father of Opal, an 11-year-old that keeps him on his toes. Mack has spent some time in prison and takes a shine to Desiree. Norah Murphy as Opal, a confident and industrious 10-year-old who works alongside her father Mack at the car wash when she's not plotting to become the next billionaire. Opal forms a strong bond with Desiree over her dream of one day leaving Mobile, Alabama. D.K. Uzoukwu as Louis, a closeted gay choir director at the local church who the older female congregants insist on trying to fix up. He is a close childhood friend of Desiree, and the only person who gives her a genuinely heartfelt welcome home. Desiree ultimately emboldens Louis to live his truth. Telma Hopkins as Ella, Louis' mother, a no-nonsense jack-of-all-trades who has known Harry for much longer than either of them would like to admit. She lives with Louis and is fully aware her son is gay, but they haven’t talked about it. Ella and Harry enjoy a deepening flirtation.
