Detective Ember Manning's is a widow, whose husband has been dead for about a year. Ember and her partner Hitch are dispatched to investigate arson at the boathouse of a peaceful lakeside vacation home, recently purchased by a wealthy Londoner. The vandalism occurred in the small (fictional) Lancashire town in Northern England where Ember grew up. While investigating, Ember has an encounter a pregnant 16-year-old and a true-crime podcaster, Riz Samuel, who believes the conflagration is connected to a decades-old cold case involving the disappearance of an abused local teenage girl, Amy Knightly. As the case progresses, Ember begins to uncover something disturbing is happening in the town.
