Andrew "Coop" Cooper, a wealthy hedge fund manager, narrates his life story. Coop's wife of two decades, Mel Cooper, divorces Coop and she now lives in their mansion in the exceedingly affluent fictional upstate New York suburb of Westmont Village with Nick Brandes, a former professional basketball player who is one of Coop's friends. Coop still pays for the mansion, child support for two children, Tori and Hunter, who are in private school, and a Maserati. When Coop gets fired from his job, a two-year noncompete clause prevents his from going to another firm. Coop becomes worried about how he can pay for everything, including the rental house that Coop now shares with his sister, Allison "Ali" Cooper, a musician with mental "issues", who is having an affair with a married man. Coop's solution is to start stealing from the homes of his wealthy neighbors.
