Season 2 had 3 episodes and is set in a women's prison and starred Jodie Whittaker, Tamara Lawrance and Bella Ramsey. Season 2 premiered on the BBC and BBC iPlayer on October 29, 2023 and can currently be seen in the US and Canada in Britbox

I didn’t see Season 1 but I followed the filming and news about Season 2 because Jodie Whittaker was in it. I finally was able to watch it properly when it premiered on Britbox US. I thought it was quite good and rather harrowing at times.

Jodie’s character Orla should never have gone to jail for that first offense. The government, the gas company or some charity could have helped the poorer people suffering through the winter and the UK’s cost of living crisis with less money than it cost to lock people like Orla up for 4 months and put her kids into care, which led her to lose her job and then get locked up for stealing from a new employer while trying to get a place to reunite her family. It’s an outrage that Orla only was given a tent to live in and some supplies when she got out because the prison system didn’t have any transitional housing  available

I’m surprised that a minimum security prison would hold a woman who was in for life for murder (not to mention life for what was likely post partum psychosis)

I didn’t like that Orla disappeared from the second half of the last episode. It suggested they needed more time for the episode or a 4th episode to fully tell all 3 main characters’ stories. At least the 3 characters were left seeing some hope of change

The acting was very good, especially from the 3 main characters and I appreciated we got stories from other characters

Tamara and Bella both won RTS awards, the former for Leading Actor - Female and Bella for Supporting Actor - Female. Jodie was nominated for Leading Actor - Female. There were no BAFTA acting nominations for the show, but it got nominations for scripted casting Editing: Fiction.

This was one of the details I found really unrealistic, that they would not only throw her in jail for a relatively minor offense (and her first offense) but they did it immediately, with no recourse for her to even arrange her kids' pickup from school, let along any temporary care for them for the length of her sentence. I'm open to correction from anybody familiar with the British penal system. But overall, excellent performances and engrossing storylines.

I think you would REALLY like Season One as well. Do you know if that season was nominated or won any BAFTAs?

I read somewhere, though it wasn’t said in the show other than Orla saying her imprisonment was due to “aggravating factors”, Orla was working with or following instructions of a syndicate and that’s why she was given jail time. It was dumb to not let her arrange for her kids’ care first, but then she didn’t plan ahead very well either

Season 1 got Bafta wins for Best Miniseries, Best Actor for Sean Bean and Best Supporting Actor for Stephen Graham (ETA: Sorry, nomination, not win). I plan to watch it at some point. ETA: Other nominations: Director: Fiction, Photography and Lighting: Fiction, and Scripted Casting

The Bafta Craft wins were announced tonight and the show didn’t win for either of their Season 2 craft nominations
