Get your travel documents in order because Ryan Coogler is taking you back to Wakanda. The Black Panther director and co-writer, who is currently working on the sequel, is also developing a series version set in the futuristic Black kingdom for Disney+.

The news comes after Coogler’s production company Proximity Media signed an exclusive five-year deal with the Walt Disney Company, which owns Marvel, to produce TV projects for different divisions including the forthcoming Wakanda series set for Disney+.

“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company,” Ryan Coogler said in a statment. “Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms. We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share.”

Danai Gurira reportedly has closed a deal to reprise her role as Black Panther‘s Okoye, general of the Dora Milaje and the head of Wakandan armed forces, in “an origin spinoff series for Disney+.”

The deal was first reported deep within a Hollywood Reporter profile of top Hollywood lawyers. TVLine has reached out to Disney+ for comment.

It is entirely possible that Gurira, formerly of TV’s The Walking Dead, will headline the cast of the Wakanda-based series that Black Panther Ryan Coogler is developing for Disney+. The streaming service thus far has given a home to Marvel series about Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Vision, and the Falcon/Sam Wilson and the Winter Soldier/onetime Wakanda guest Bucky Barnes. Next up will be Loki, starring MCU vet Tom Hiddleston in the title role, with many, many more to come.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: The show will be set in the futuristic Black kingdom of Wakanda and is part of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler’s overall deal with Walt Disney Company.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Danai Gurira will reprise her role as Dora Milaje general Okoye in an “origin spinoff series.” It’s not specified whether that will be the untitled Wakanda series or another project.

In this Official Marvel Podcast, Brad Winderbaum (Head of Marvel Streaming, Television and Animation) said that "Eyes of Wakanda, more than any other show - uh, we're doing an animation - ties directly into the MCU. This is a story about Wakandan history. It's produced by Ryan Coogler. Directed by Todd Harris, who is one of our longtime storyboard artists who's - you know, I first met when he designed the Hulk versus Thor fight in Ragnorak. It's an awesome show. The action's insane. The storytelling's fantastic... It's both about the history of Wakanda, but it also expands into the greater MCU at different time periods. So, if you're a fan of the movies, I think this show is gonna be a real treat."

Eyes of Wakanda

Developed by Todd Harris, this animated expansion of the Black Panther movie world will focus on how the hidden nation’s past helped shape its future. Like Marvel Zombies, it will also be just four episodes.

Harris teased the MCU introduction of a major new character called Noni, a fighter from Wakanda’s past, as well as the “intersection” of “unbeknownst characters in the Marvel Universe that also are from secret cities, whose name also are a title, and they have a glowing fist.”

Eyes of Wakanda

Streaming August 6, 2025, on Disney+

The four-episode series Eyes of Wakanda tells the stories of brave Wakandan warriors throughout history. In this globe-trotting adventure, the heroes — the Hatut Zaraze — must complete dangerous missions to retrieve Vibranium artifacts from Wakanda’s enemies.

“This has been a long time coming,” showrunner Todd Harris said. “The story has been stewing for a long time in my head. I’m a big believer in what Wakanda represents to mankind as a place that’s untethered by expansion. It has drawn a line — a line it won’t cross and it won’t let anybody else cross.”

Think of the Hatut Zaraze “like Wakanda’s CIA,” Winderbaum explained. “They often have to venture out to regain stolen Vibranium, but they also have to keep secrets well-hidden so that Wakanda can ward off invaders and stay safe. The Hatut Zaraze are challenged in different ways to stay loyal to Wakanda as they discover the rest of the world around them.”

Only through the medium of animation could these ambitious, centuries-spanning stories be told, Harris added. “Animation is the ultimate equalizer of locations,” he said “Egypt costs just as much as New York City, and the moon costs just as much as Ohio. Filming around the globe has inherent limitations that we just don’t have in animation. That freedom allowed us to reimagine an idealized version of an era that’s unaffected by human history.”

Eyes of Wakanda features the voices of Winnie Harlow, Cress Williams, Patricia Belcher, Larry Herron, Adam Gold, Lynn Whitfield, Jacques Colimon, Jona Xiao, Isaac Robinson-Smith, Gary Anthony Williams, Zeke Alton, Steve Toussaint, and Disney Legend Anika Noni Rose. Academy Award nominee Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker behind Marvel Studios’ Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2023), executive produces alongside Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Kalia King, and Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt.
