  1.  a school like NYADA would have very possibly understood and made concessions for the LEAD of a major Broadway production to take her final/midterm at a later time.

The point of NYADA is to prepare students for real world performing. It helps the school's reputation if a student like Rachel succeeds at her Broadway show. She would have been a succesful alumnus who would draw more students there. But nope, Tibideaux refused to budge because Rachel needed to drop out which lead to no Funny Girl. Then no TV show ---> then straight to Ohio.

Yes. I never understood how rigid NYADA was. Other than to advance a lame plot point, that is.

  2. Rachel as a character worked well within the fringes of the back comedy that Glee flirted with, particularly in the first season.

Who wouldn't love a self centered manipulative Diva who tricked 3 guys into thinking they were her sole male lead in the glory that was the " Run Joey Run"video.

It was hilarious how Rachel seemed shocked by the guys' annoyance.

Agreed, but that was just one facet of the character. She also had been raised by two stage-obsessed fathers to have only one overriding focus-- fame--and who, by her own admission, had been practically friendless her whole life. RIB brought that into the mix too, which to me is beyond quirky black comedy.

It could have been a truly great story of someone who managed to find success without losing her humanity. The potential for that was what RIB also gave us in the character of Rachel Berry, and just didn't have the chops to actually build a plausible and compelling tale around it. .Or maybe they just didn't care to. I don't know.

  3. Reading the passionate posts about how TPTB have messed up the Rachel character only reinforces what I have thought for a long time: RIB invented a character that was far too complex and fascinating for their abilities to portray.

It would be an interesting exercise to come up with a list of television writers with the chops to have pulled off portraying her properly. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the industry to offer up my own suggestions, but would be very interested in hearing from those here that do.

  4. Here was what I wanted for Finchel:

    1. Nobody from McKinley got into NYADA

    2. Finn got no football scholarship and failed to get into PACE.

    3. Facing the prospect of both of them ending up Lima Losers, they pack up Finns truck and just drive to NYC.

    4. They find that shoebox apartment and land lowly jobs: Finn a mechanic or tire guy; Rachel a waitress in an outer-borough restaurant

    5. Rachel auditions but fails to land anything, so they both decide to study music at a different school. Queens College, perhaps.

    6. In the meantime, they form a band with some classmates (called "Finchel", natch)

    7. Write songs together and live rich happy lives with nothing handed to them.

    8. If Finn dies, so be it. At least he died living a dignified life. And Rachel can struggle on, paying her dues until eventually achieving her dreams.

  5. I was curious as to why Rachel chose to take a Greyhound bus to New York. Perhaps an homage to the song "On Broadway"?

They say that I won't last too long on Broadway
I'll catch a greyhound bus for home, they all say

  6. I liked both episodes. The first for some of the snarky humor (Figgins was awesome, and I loved Sue's Demotivational poster on the wall). And I like subdued but still strong Rachel.

I loved the second episode's obvious homage to the great musical film The Commitments, with Roger's audition song, "Mustang Sally".  His character mimics (overweight, but with a mighty, mighty voice)  the character of Deco in the film.

    I actually have hope.

  7.  It was a cute joke in the show to have Rachel's middle name be the singer that her fathers wanted her to be like, but they carried that far too long and too deeply.

I'm wondering if the SL  regarding her parent's divorce will explore  this more.

  8. Oh, I would love to see Rachel interact with Sue. Because Sue will not sugarcoat just how completely Rachel fucked her own career every single time they came within 50 yards of one another. And take enormous pleasure in doing so.

I can easily see Rachel looking for sympathy from all the usual suspects who had been quick to offer support to her in the past, and find that it's not exactly forthcoming because it's Rachel's own fault that she's lost everything. It was Rachel's decision to quit NYADA in a manner so arrogant that Ms. Tibideaux wouldn't spit on her if Rachel was on fire (if Ms. Tibideaux would deign to spit on anyone). It was Rachel's choice to quit Funny Girl (after getting a very, very explicit warning about just what would happen if she fucked with te show again). Rachel had all the success she'd dreamed of right in her hands and she threw it all away because she couldn't control her ambitions. It's going to be interesting to see her being told just that right to her face.

Oh yes. And then to see her pick herself back up and maybe go at it differently. But please, no finding her destiny in freaking Lima.

  9. I'm hoping a throwaway line by that Hollywood producer about Rachel's FG costar Paolo having been offered something similar (and blamed for the failure of the show)  was actually not a throwaway line after all. Perhaps he has some sympathy for her plight and is involved in helping her try and rebuild her Broadway career while she does her obligatory penance in Lima.

  10. from Eonline: "Our insider adds, "He treats her really well, he's smart and fun. She's really happy."

End of story as far as anybody should be concerned.

  11. I seem to recall someone saying that Season 6 was about "comebacks". Assuming that's true, having Rachel's show bomb in LA, and her having burnt bridges to Broadway and NYADA, perhaps the idea is having her return to Lima (maybe as a Glee Club consultant), seeing it as her only option, and then planning a comeback. Maybe finding a way to reestablish herself on Broadway after all (the last scene of the series could be her ready to leave Lima for New York and spending one last moment with Will, reminiscing). That could be a satisfying, even compelling, story line.

But it's Glee, so who the hell knows.
