And why on earth would she allow hide and seek after being locked in a closet the day before? Why not just say “Hey! Let’s play Candyland!”

Amen!!! If you want to reward the kids, how about a good old fashioned game of War? Agreeing to hide and seek in the dark right before bed time seems like a super boneheaded choice - and if Flora’s so worried about being in bed before the witching hour, i’m not sure why she suggested it.

Why should having kids disqualify a candidate? Yes, it's an incredibly dangerous job, but they're the ones that can make the call for their family. Also, if you have young kids, chances are you're on the young side and likely in peak health and fitness, as well as able to stand the stresses of space better.

That said, I wish we'd gotten more detail on why these particular people were chosen for the mission, other than they're all apparently the best and the crew had to be multinational.

I don’t think it should disqualify them, I just think if I was picking people for a three year mission to a distant planet and I had two equally competent candidates - one with young kids, and one without, I’d pick the one without.  I don’t have kids so maybe I overestimate the number of young fit women without them, but it seems like there’d be a few who managed to not accidentally get pregnant during astronaut training.

Okay, re-read your comment through that lens and I agree, especially when one of those women has a husband with a potentially incapacitating health condition and their only backup parent figure is a single mom of a special-needs child. They did NOT think this through!

I couldn’t help but wonder why people with young kids would be selected. I’m guessing the first mission to Mars would be hugely competitive with heaps of candidates who were so committed that there was no space for kids derailing their focus. The show certainly didn’t go out of its way to demonstrate what Emma brought to the table that no one else could match and that rendered her split-focus worth it.

  4. Just wrapped up episode 10 - credit where credit is due, the last 20 minutes were quite stirring, and gave me goosebumps. Watching everyone in mission command waiting at the end of the countdown was nerve-wracking even though I as a viewer already knew they’d made it. I look forward to seeing Kwesi’s Mars garden.

  5. It’s been awhile since I watched Another Life on Netflix, but Away feels very similar to it - with the whole “female astronaut commander goes to space, leaving her deeply involved husband back on earth with their daughter” thing. Also the deeply dysfunctional crew thing. I echo a sentiment from earlier in the thread that I would expect if they’ve been training together for years (as was stated in the first episode) that they’d have a better handle on their interpersonal drama.

Oh well. I’m always here for space drama, so I’ll be watching as long as they’re airing. And if Another Life got renewed for a season 2 (which shocks me, based on its abysmal reviews - although i enjoyed it fine) I have to hope this will too.

  6. I just finished watching the whole series for the first time over about a week. Fun, good natured show - and a few emotional punches here and there. I don’t mind the way it ended, but I did find Myka and Pete a bit out of left field. I was really buying their whole sibling vibe. I didn’t pick up on much sexual tension between them (and I’m all about the ships!) Going into it my viewing about all I knew was that there was a Bering/Wells fandom, and I did think those two had chemistry in spades. I cried when they said their final goodbye in season 5.

I will say, I suspect this show aired during the tail end of the time where a lead character like Pete making boobie comments about every woman he saw would be portrayed as funny/cute.  I don’t consider myself super uptight about tone, but i did cringe a few times.

All in all though, I’d be thrilled if the Warehouse came a calling for me! Wish there were more shows in this vein. Guess I’ll start a Eureka rewatch now.

The latest episode of Ken Jeong and Joel McHale's podcast is just a zoom call with Dan Harmon and the main original cast, seems like it's from directly after shooting the upcoming table read.

Edit: Oh my god it is so hilarious. I can't wait for the table read. And after that I'll just be constantly searching for movie news.

I watched it a couple days ago and was SO delighted. I was so glad Donald Glover participated, nice to see he’s still willing to be a part of the Community community. I’m rewatching the series now. It is still the best.  Can’t WAIT for the table read to drop Monday!

Gotta whole lot of catching up to do.  Don't remember how many botched weddings I've missed so far.  Must set my calendar <dragging feet>.  Think Martha's shrill yell, "Move it, Buddy!"  And with that, glad to see some regular posters here. Warms my heart.

Another Scaper, here in Good Witch land! Who’d have thunk it?

i’ve tried to watch season 1 a few times between when the show originally started and now, but this week is the first time i’ve been successful. I’m half way through season 4 now.  Occasionally I wonder “whatever happened to Lori, or that boy Grace was friends with in season one?” but I try not to let it get to me. I’m sure it’s fine. This show is ridiculous, and sometimes I yell “STOP SMILING SO MUCH, YOU PEOPLE ARE STUPID”, but I continue to watch it.

  10. VERY beautiful show. I binge watched it all in the last 3 days. I found season 1 compelling, but appreciated that season 2 had a bit more of a hopeful note.

The entire divorce episode brought me to tears, but Deirdre’s song most especially. And the duet between Peter and Jeff in episode 2 of season 2 was brilliant, but the sasquatch’s song took the day for me - as well as Jeff’s refrain in that song. “Up goes the barrel, Jeff feels anxious; down goes the barrel, Jeff feels free...” has been running through my head on a loop. I hope there will be another season!

For instance, he said that the Admonition is a total immersion experience - not just images but sounds and smells, a thousand years of history dumped into the brain in seconds. That was how he envisaged it, and I can easily imagine how beautifully and richly it would be described as part of a novel...but on TV, all we get is a few seconds worth of images.

That’s exactly what I meant when I said More explanation was necessary - i know they can’t devise a sufficiently terrifying clip-reel, but having Jurati just say a few words about how what was put in her mind went beyond just seeing visions, and how viscerally terrifying it was, would really give some context.

  12. I’m a bit confused about who the third synth girl was, the one Rios met before - I thought they were built in pairs, were these ones triplets?

I enjoyed seeing Picard give a good Picardian speech about how we are armed with curiosity and hope and sugar and spice and everything nice, and all they have is trickery and deceipt.

Unfortunately, I am struggling to believe in a vision of synth-takeover so terrible that it makes you claw your face off, or beat your head in with a rock. They’re going to have to expand on that a little bit more.  I’ll admit, at first I was like “Hmm, I think this past synth-takeover was shown on one of the Treks...” Then after a minute I realized I was thinking of the Orville, and the thwarted takeover by Isaac’s species, whoops! 😂

So Gabe was Dodge all along? How would that work, he seemed to have been a student there for a long time. Did Dodge kill the real kid and took over his identity at some point? How would she do that without the head key, that she didn't have for the longest time? She wouldn't know his

He was introduced playing the lobster for the movie as “the other new kid”, and then told oldest girl child during their walk that he was sent there for boarding school for reasons involving crappy parents.

  14. Count me in as another Craxy-Ex/Eli Stone/all things musical fan. Even Ally McBeal used musical numbers in a way I loved. Also a fan of shows where nice people develop strange abilities and start helping people ala Kevin (probably) Saves the World, whatever that one was where the guy got tomorrow’s newspaper today, etc. So this is right up my alley. And no shock, after weeks of seeing it suggested to me on Hulu, I watched it and really enjoyed it. I was all set to continue on to episode 2, and was mighty sad to see it doesn’t drop til the 16th - although my first thought was that it was cancelled after one episode, so I’m relieved it wasn’t that!

in the interim I’ll give a plug to the show Encore! on Disney+. Each week they bring together the cast of a high-school musical that was staged 10-30 years ago, to restage it with 5 days rehearsal. I watched it yesterday and it got me singing around the house, and wishing more shows had song and dance numbers, which is how I ended up finally watching this show!

Last comment about a show I loved that used a ton of music - someone upthread mentioned Ed, which has never been released on DVD or streaming because of the cost of the music rights - I consider that one of the great tragedies of television. That was such a great feel-good show.

  15. That scene where Kat checked in with her very forgiving best-friend about the career ending injury was really moving.

    oh wait, didn’t happen.

i want to like this show, but they could balance the relationships better.

I did NOT see the subplot with the doctor and Serena coming. I guessed that she wasn't with one of the twins, but didn't expect it to be him. I'm glad they didn't make the characters kiss or do a love scene, because it would have been too icky.

Nor I. What a creep that guy is. Good for Serena, proving people without bipolar disorder can still be super dysfunctional.

I'm not sure if the show expects its audience to be largely ignorant of figure skating technique or whether it expects them to simply hand-wave all of this.

I’m going with largely ignorant, being largely ignorant myself and not having noticed anything in particular amiss with the skating. The life-choices on the other hand, I find really alarming.

I'm confused--did Jenn tell Kat she kind of had a thing with Justin? I thought the only incident between them was the aborted one in the car and when she saw Kat she immediately put her clothes back on and left. If she's in a relationship with Justin, why isn't she blaming him as well?

In the first episode Jenn said something about how Justin should come to his senses and get with her, but it came off like a joke to me. Dunno why Kat would have any idea that Jenn was seriously interested in Justin. These people are all bonkers, but I’m going to finish watching anyhow.

Can someone explain to me what pills Kat sold? I assumed it was adderall or something like that because why would college students need lithium to study?

    Yes, it was adderall.

  20. I am liking the series, but didn’t care for the fact that NO daemons were visible (or few enough that I couldn’t spot any) during the Gyptian rallying scene. I get that the CGI is expensive and difficult, but they can’t just all disappear every time there’s a crowd scene. I mean, come on. Pan should have been on Lyra’s shoulder listening raptly. Lord Faa’a daemon should have been near him, conveying resolve. There should have been a bunch of birds in the rafters.
