  1. The newest episode-Left Hand Man-The couple from Canada-have the house listed on Air BNB.  I wonder if it was just an investment to them?

I was looking on Realtor at homes in Laurel-there are still some to be had for under $100,000.

Anchorage, Alaska. They seem really young. And why haven't they said how far these places are from work? In winter, that's got to be a consideration. Thought they might pick #3.

My daughter and her family just moved back to Wisconsin from Eagle River AK.  They both worked in Anchorage.  ER is very close to Anchorage.  The ER schools are part of the Anchorage School District. Where my daughter worked in Anchorage it was 20 minutes away from ER.  The bad part-there is only one way in and out so if there was a traffic accident or someone hit a moose it took a lot longer.   A few years ago there was a major Earthquake and it took my daughter 6 hours to get home. ER is a nice area.  The base is right outside ER so a lot of military families.  My daughter was not military just wanted an adventure.  But the schools and neighborhoods are transient with a high every 2 year military turnover.   They moved back because of the high cost of living, the distance from the lower 48 and the poor school system.  My youngest 2 grandkids have some special needs and the school could not meet them.  They have thrived since being back here.

What are you doing in the meantime?  Can you still use it?  😮

That friend of mine who accidentally killed the septic system at a private school now lives in a house with city plumbing that was constantly getting clogged.  Her plumber told her to use 1-ply Scott and she hasn't had a problem since, and it's been several years.

We also have holding tanks so the waste water goes into the holding tanks.  We had them pumped a few months ago.   We can still use water.   If it completely fails it possibly would back up into the house.   We should be fine until they replace it.  Luckily the mound is in the back of our property.  Every once in awhile-when I am outside hanging laundry I smell it.    We have been using Scot's single ply for years.  I hate it but it saves the holding tanks from clogging.

  4. We built our house 15 years ago.  We have a mound septic and a well.  We went deep with our well.  Water is fine and we never run out.

Last summer our septic system failed.  We have to replace it.  It will cost us 13,000.  The county condemned it.  We contracted last fall to have it replaced.  We live in Wisconsin so they won't do it in winter.    So hopefully in the next few weeks.

We have the 2nd newest house in the subdivision.  The 1st to have to replace it.  Two people.  We use single ply toilet paper.  Nothing else goes down there.  The septic guy thinks the original install did not drill big enough holes and did not set it on enough rock.  Our daughter is buying our house next summer.  Hopefully the new one last longer.

Our county requires us to pump every 3 years.

  5. I work from home as an on-line tutor.  My desk is in the corner of our bedroom.  If no one is home-I sometimes sit at the kitchen table for a different view.  My daughter and her family live with us so we have no empty bedrooms.  We have a living room and family room.  My daughter has her office in the family room.  We make it all work.

  6. The Chicago couple.   He said he fell down the stairs in the new home.  And all I could think of...you were a cop?   How did you go up and down steps in an apartment and not fall.

I did not hear he had 25 years in.  I pegged him to be in his mid 30s.

He looked better in his photo when he was an artist.  The facial hair gave his face more character.

I hear ya. Lately, I've been rolling my eyes at "doable", "absolutely love", "cozy", "'wow' factor". And the word slash must be used in a sentence where a room has a dual purpose because if you just say "office guest room" no one would know what you were talking about. Does HGTV give people a vocabulary list?

In the Hudson Valley episode, there was concern that one of the girls would have to give up her bedroom temporarily when the father came to visit. That's what you did back in the Dark Ages when "company" stayed over (you didn't "entertain") and it was usually a fun change from routine.

People seem more averse to sharing or economizing or sacrificing than ever. Is this a good thing?

On Andy Griffith, Opie was always excited when they had company-he got to sleep on the ironing board.

  8. Both shows yesterday Oklahoma and Boca.  I get so sick of hearing people say they want an impressive/grand house.  Honestly, I don't care what anyone thinks of my house.  I like it and it fits our lifestyle.

In all honesty I did not care for any of the houses either couple were looking at.

    Arlington Heights Area

For the entire program, I found myself being in disbelief of how much this couple had changed since their wedding picture. It was as though 25 years had passed. The wife wanted their son to have the same experiences she had when she grew up in Arlington Heights. I can already hear her future laments about how things have changed so much in that city since she was a kid--and not for the good. The husband wanted a basketball hoop over the garage door. He looked like he could easily get winded quite retrieving that first rebound.

She grew up next door to my cousin.  She is good friends with my cousin's  daughter.  The daughter posted a Christmas gathering at their house so I knew which house they pick.

Ironically-I grew up with her mom in Roger Park-Chicago.  And her dad and I went to college together-he played in the MLB for a few years.

They have been married for 9 years.

The couple from Appleton, WI ( my home state!) were so hard to watch.  Did they agree on anything?   🤯

I was more amused when they said he worked for a major sports team and wouldn't say who - they are in Appleton, it has to be the Packers, right?  but they sure as heck didn't like each other.

I am 90 minutes from Appleton.  We do our big shopping there once a month.   Sports teams could also be semi-pro.  Appleton has that in baseball.

  11. When I looked up the lady from Nice, in 2019 she formed a partnership in LA.  She is looking to pick up clients in France that are ex-pats.

I thought opposites attract-he is very affectionate-she is not.  With the kids being older he could go back to work but I guess they want to be free to fly overseas.

That bedroom was hideous for the kids even if they could have something between the beds for privacy.  They are to old for that closeness.

I guess the writers didn’t think about inserting safety measures due to that staff members abusive husband, but I think that professionals are taught to do that now days.  Most hospitals, you can’t just enter without permission.  That woman’s husband should not have had access.  As an attorney, I’m acutely aware of the emotions in divorce cases, especially, domestic violence.  It’s always a concern for you and your office staff.

I tought the realtor was just an old good friend...his ex was his landlord.

I also thought the realtor was a friend.  His Ex was his landlord.   I am originally from Chicago and grew up next to Evanston.   I knew the 1st one was too far away from where he was living.

I hope not.  It's one thing for 20 something year olds to play 17-18year olds.  There's no way an 18 year old can pull off 14.

Eden Scher was 18 when she started playing Sue Heck on  The Middle.  Sue was still in Middle school-so she was playing a 13 or 14 yr old.   Anson Williams was born in 1949-in 1974 he played a teen age Potsie Weber on Happy Days.

Hard to imagine that they use that 28% rule where your mortgage payment should only be 28% of your monthly salary before taxes. I also remember a 2.5 factor where your home price should be only 2.5 times your annual salary.

Yikes. How does anyone purchase a $650K home if they're not making over $225K/year?

When we got married in the 70s the rule was your rent should not be more then 1 weeks pay.  I remember our rent in Chicago was about $5 more then we made in a week and people told us we were crazy to spend that much on rent.

He said "maintenance man." He said he could transfer closer to wherever they bought. Maybe for a school system? I think they are pretty well paid.

Our school system starts out at about $16 and caps them at $25.  Maybe in a larger city they make more.

I missed the beginning. How old was the son and what happened to him?

I creeped on their Facebook page.  He went to bed, dad checked him in the middle of the night he was fine.  Found him in his bed the next morning.  They said Medical Examiner said he was healthy.

I guess one of those things that you will never understand why it happens.  They are very Christian which might have helped them get through this tragedy.

  17. Milwaukee mom.  I live right outside of Wausau.  Milwaukee is 3 hours away.  They split custody 50/50.  So are the kids going to school one week in Wausau the next week in Milwaukee?

I knew it was the 2nd house when I saw all the boxes in the one room.

She was determined to date and have a man.  Wow.

  18. I laughed when they missed the Maud answer and Mayim said "What is Maud".  I was reading about Ken Jennings first appearance on Jeopardy.  For his final answer he wrote "Who is Jones" for the question... on the Olympics.  Alex clarified the last name only was fine since there were not that many female athletes.  And here we have how many years later... people complaining when Matt did it.

That's great for you and your family...I was offering an opinion about being isolated from things that a suburban family would find difficult. Sure, you grew up that way but I don't think this family did. They don't have a farm to play around on...or anything even remotely resembling that. They were a suburban couple with young kids...not farmers, not even gentlemen farmers...and this isn't a farm. What neighbor are they going to call? They have none. No family nearby either. I never said anything about living in a walkable town with shops and restaurants...I was referring to having to run to the store for milk, bread, orange juice or cough medicine and having to drive miles away in a snowstorm...that part of New Mexico in the mountainous areas has rough winters with a lot of snow. I did not say anything derogatory about dirt roads...I was stating that driving on a dirt road in the winter way up there could be very treacherous. I've lived in New Mexico and winters can be rough. Yes, maybe where you live you have more social opportunities that have been in place for generations like 4H or church. Not sure that exists in that part of New Mexico or would even be something that would appeal to this family.

When my kids were 10 and 4 we left Chicago to live in the country in Wisconsin.  We started out on 5 acres but then we went bigger.  This was 30 years ago.  My kids absolutely loved living out in the country.  They would play outside all day.  They would skate on the pond in winter.  They made friends that lived about 3 miles away.  They would bike over there when it was nice. Otherwise we drove them.  They were very involved in school sports.  We car pooled.

Thirty years later my daughter lives in Alaska.  They are looking to move to a more rural area.  My son stayed right down the road from us.

As a kid in Chicago I always wanted a rural life.  I was glad my kids had the chance.  When we 1st moved here DH still worked in Chicago.  He would leave Monday afternoon and come home on Friday night.  We were fine alone.
