  1. The phrase "Men of science" goes way back. From The Hound of the Baskervilles, first published in 1901:

"And you, a trained man of science, believe it to be supernatural?"

From what I understand, the word "scientist" was considered by many people to be somewhat jargon-ish in the early days.

  2. The Blob is a better movie than it has any right to be, mostly because of the acting of young Steve McQueen (so young he was still billed as "Steven" McQueen). His girlfriend was played by Aneta Corsaut--Helen Crump herself, from The Andy Griffith Show!

I, too, was dismayed by the substitution of Cary Grant for Jimmy Stewart. I guess all those old-timey movie actors blend together for these whippersnappers today. At least Cary Grant was also in several Hitchcock movies, so you can see the connection.

  3. I object in the strongest possible terms to their accepting "Lucy Arnaz." Lucie Arnaz (spelled that way) is Desi and Lucy's daughter. Lucille Ball was never known by any other name but "Ball," neither during her marriage to Desi nor during her marriage to Gary Morton.

"Lucie Arnaz" is a different person, and was NOT the person that Nicole Kidman played in "Being the Ricardos." Bad call by the judges.

I wonder if I'm not readily seeing a comment by Victoria about The Wager That Could Have Been because in the end it wouldn't have mattered??

That's what I suspect. Ultimately what matters is not so much the final score in each game, but placement in the points ranking. Victoria may have bet conservatively because, if everybody got it wrong, she might still win. And if everybody got it right, and she ended up in second place, it wouldn't have mattered that much, because she would still be first in the points ranking.

  5. I also thought Isabella was going to do well, but missing that Daily Double really seemed to take the wind out of her sails. She wasn't the same after that. It seems to have become the in-thing to "bet it all" these days, but that's not always the best move.

I wonder how soprano Isabella would have handled yesterday's opera FJ?

  6. I didn't get it either--I knew from the plot description that it was Rigoletto, but I couldn't figure out what the rhyming part was--but I think I see what they were going for. The hint was in saying that it was written by Piave.

If you were talking about the opera as a whole, you'd say it was by Verdi. Operas are always credited to their composers. The librettist is rarely mentioned. A few, like Mozart's frequent collaborator Lorenzo da Ponte, have achieved some amount of fame, but most of them are forgotten trivia.

So to specify Piave's name, they had to be talking about something other than just the opera Rigoletto.

As I say, I didn't get it, and I think it was VERY hard to even figure out what they were asking, let alone solve it. But I think that's the path the contestants were supposed to take.

Credit to Alison for at least coming up with something that rhymed (sort of, depending on how you pronounce "Juan").

  7. Matt actually made a joke when he got to the last clue:

"Do not, under any circumstances, bring it!" Is there a controversy (beyond the confines of this forum, I mean) about people saying "Bring it!" that he might be aware of?

  8. Angelus is from Muncie, Indiana, which is where I live. Sorry that he didn't do better. He was playing well, but missing those Daily Doubles did him in.

I haven't seen any local publicity about him being on the show, which is a little puzzling. Back when I was on the show, the local newspaper called me and did an interview even before my shows had aired. I also occasionally see stories about local people who are going to be on Wheel of Fortune, or other game shows.

I even did a search on the local paper's website for Angelus's name, but all I found were a few stories in the Crime section about court cases he's been involved with (he's a lawyer, remember). I know that print journalism is having troubles, but do they really have no one to cover this kind of local interest story anymore?

  9. I should have gotten the Turtles, but didn't. My immediate association for "Baroque" is music, not art, so I was trying to think of some fictional 80s group that had something to do with classical musicians. Like, Mozart and the Viennese Crusaders, or something like that? Needless to say, that didn't get me to Leo, Donnie, Mikey and Raph.

I've been to Nashville several times and even been to its Parthenon, but that didn't help me for FJ.

I feel so out of it. Ken said, "You had to think of the Parthenon in Nashville," and all three of the contestants went "Ohhhh, yeah!"

Meanwhile, I went, "There's a Parthenon in Nashville?"

Isn't she being played by Lady Gaga in the sequel to the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie?

I believe so, although I'm not sure that The Joker and its sequel(s) are in continuity with the rest of the current DC films.

  12. Okay, time to put my comic book geek hat on.

Harley Quinn debuted in the 1992 Saturday morning cartoon Batman: The Animated Series. She was the Joker's henchwoman/lover, and was originally only supposed to appear in one episode. She was voiced by Arleen Sorkin, who passed away just last year (RIP). The character was popular enough that she was brought back in multiple episodes, and eventually crossed over into the comic books.

Eventually she realized that her relationship with the Joker was toxic, and broke free of his influence to become, if not exactly a hero, then at least an antihero who wants to overcome her tendency toward violence and criminality. As mentioned, she is played brilliantly by Margot Robbie in the live action movies, and equally brilliantly by Kaley Cuoco in the for-adults-only animated series on MAX.

I can't find the clue - but I remember the One Night in Bangkok answer. Despite being old I remembered the title. Just looked it up on YouTube. I remember the video, and I don't hate the song. It's kinda catchy, imo.

Sung by Murray Head, older brother of Anthony Stewart Head from Buffy, and the original Judas on the Jesus Christ Superstar concept album.

The "get your kicks above the waistline, sunshine" hint in the Bangkok clue has that awful "One Night in Bangkok" song stuck in my head.

Surely you meant to say "that delightful One Night in Bangkok song." 😀

I, too, have never heard of "Manuka." Honey, to the best of my knowledge, comes in little squeezable plastic bears.

  15. I like "Carefree Highway" as well. Also "Sundown" and "Canadian Railroad Trilogy." In a way, it's too bad that "Edmund Fitzgerald" is the song that everyone immediately associates him with. It may be the worst of his well-known songs. It's worth looking into his other stuff if you enjoy that type of music.

I'm disappointed that Ken thought the John Adams in the clue was "JQA" - no, it wasn't his son, Quincy.

The clue itself said "John Quincy Adams." He would have been 15 years old at the time, the right age for that kind of snark.

Sad the Nicholas Brothers was a TS.  Watch their famous dance routine

I knew them but couldn't remember their name. I wanted to say "Williamson Brothers," even though I knew it wasn't right.

Went back and forth between the Golden Horde and the Mongols. Let's just pretend that I decided on Golden Horde, shall we?

Another Chase-er! I was kind of hoping we’d come back from a commercial break and find Victoria busy knitting.

It's an interesting contrast. On The Chase, they have to act so confident and superior, always smarter than the mere mortals who are the contestants. It was fun to see Victoria so excited about winning.

I have done neither and I got stuck wondering how one narrates silently.

Chief Bromden isn't really mute; he just pretends to be. The narration is an almost stream-of-consciousness thing, as if it's what's going through his mind as events happen. Within the story, he speaks out loud very little.

I got FJ, but I'm not surprised that many people didn't. It was certainly on the obscure side.

  20. Brandon was in the 2008 Teen Tournament, apparently, so it's not surprising that people don't remember him as a Jeopardy! contestant. As mentioned, he's become much more prominent since then, with big success on both Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and University Challenge. He's now a Chaser on both the American and Australian versions of The Chase.

BTW, if you're not familiar with University Challenge, look up some episodes on YouTube some time. It's way harder than Jeopardy! could ever hope to be.
