  1. Rachel was a guest on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast that was released Sunday. I found it really interesting and I learned some things I hadn’t known before. She talks about her family (I didn’t know she has a brother) and how she went from high school right through to her tv career.

It’s definitely worth a listen if you’re a fan. It’s about an hour or more and starts about 10 minutes in.

I can do you one better on the "We are old, we used typewriters" front.   (And yes, I raised my hand when Rachel asked that question.)  Many, many years ago I got a call a few days before my college graduation saying that I wasn't going to graduate because I failed an anthropology course and therefore didn't have enough credit hours.  I knew that was impossible, so I contacted the professor who told me he never received my final paper (which was responsible for our entire grade and which I had turned in to his secretary several weeks earlier) so he gave me an F.  I had not made a carbon copy, so I ended up frantically recreating the paper from my handwritten notes overnight and then had my uncle drive me to the professor's house to turn it in.  I ended up getting an A and more importantly a diploma but it was, needless to say, a traumatic experience.

I work at a university (support staff) and your story is precisely why I have always refused to take students papers.  Now it's not such a big deal with computers but back then I would tell the professors, "if you want students to hand in a paper, you be here, in your office, to receive them.  I will not take responsibility for a student's assignment because it's the student's word against mine and the student will always win."  A student could 'say' they handed it in to me but actually didn't.  And at the end of the day, it doesn't matter to me if said student passes the class or not and it's not up to me to make sure their assignments get handed in to the right person.  [/rant]

See, that's actually why I was so surprised. I remember reading somewhere (maybe Leah's book? Might have been Marc Headley's book?) that part of their Scientology training is "language precision" where they are required to look words up in the dictionary and write out definitions for even the smallest thing. I think Hubbard had some idea that various different ills are caused by people not understanding each other. I remember that because it struck me as really similar to the book The Giver, of all things. They were very big on language precision too.

Maybe that was another part of his "fuck you" to LRH,  like committing suicide on LRH's birthday? Leaving a suicide note filled with misspellings.

I was really surprised that the penalty was only 2 hours.  I was expecting it to be 4.  I was really irked that they took the penalty on the first bloody task!

I was sad to see the mom and son go.  The mom reminded me so much of Andrea Martin.  They seemed nice and fun and not as screamy as some of the other teams.  The hosers need to tone it down a few notches.

I was surprised that they started with a coast to coast flight.  TARCan keeps to it's tradition of trying to wear out and push the competitors hard.

Ahhh, Andrea Martin!  Of course!  She reminded me of someone and I just couldn't put my finger on who.  Thanks for the brain free-er, lol.

Wish I knew about a "fun"-eral when planning my mom's memorial.

For my mom's we had a "memorial cocktail party" in the backyard, invited all her friends and family and we had a blast. Played all her favourite music (she loved to dance), and also put up her collection of 'naughty' cocktail napkins and other things with naughty sayings on them around the house and yard. A place of honour went to her battery operated flower pot which, when the right button was pushed, played Glen Miller songs as the flowers danced up and down. lol  She also loved food so we had all her favourite dishes, as well as licorice cigars for dessert.  She would have loved it!

Seeing the 'fun'-eral last night made me smile for more reasons than just one.

  6. Darn.  I just saw another ad for Bill Maher and now Leah's not listed for this Friday's episode.  :/   At the end of each show there is a ticker that goes by on the bottom of the screen that says the next week's guests.  She was listed on that one last week, but not on this latest ad I saw for tomorrow's show.
