I was not a fan of Bella, but something gave me the feeling she has a "Tiger Mother", can't quite put a finger on it, and perhaps that explains her intensity.

I don't see Tiger Mom there at all. Usually kids of Tiger Moms are pretty timid and hesitant to stand out. Bella seems like the opposite of that. As I've said before, she comes across to me as probably being one of the younger kids in a big family and has had to learn how to be aggressive to get what she wants.

  2. Yay, first time my early pick to win it all actually wins it all! Although I think I was actually rooting for Bella to take it. Over the last few weeks, I felt like she just really hit a groove. She's got a lot to be proud of. They all do!  I'll say that I don't understand the wisdom of putting the finale of Kids Baking Championship on at 10pm. 😞

Overall, I thought this was a great season. I liked all of the kids, thought they were all very talented and none were particularly annoying. The challenges were good and varied.  Duff and Val were great as they always are.

Agree with everyone else that the parents need to go, although one thing I did like about having them there was seeing them comfort their child after elimination. This was obviously filmed during the pandemic, and at every elimination I was jarred not seeing the eliminated kid hugged by the other contestants, so it as actually nice to see the parent there doing that. But everything else about the parents was super-annoying.

    Until next season!

I've noticed this for a while. It is hard to pin down because the judges can always find an excuse for their decision, but I really feel the black kids are getting shafted. So much so that I think this is the final season that I'll be watching.

Is there a particular kid that you remember getting shafted? I thought Yashimabet would have won Season 2, but can't think of anyone other than that.

I had read a while back on a random site that a person or people thought the show was racist in that way. I would like to know what other people think. I don't know. I am of the opinion that Duff often favors boys.

I don't think the show is racist in that way, as I've mostly agreed with the eliminations and winners. From race POV, the competitions seem pretty balanced. I might agree that Duff often favors the boys, but also notice that 6 winners in the first 8 seasons have been girls.

I find it interesting that all the minority kids are being eliminated. Things that make you go hmmm.

Bella is still in it with a reasonable chance to win it all.

Seasons 4 and 5 had minority kid winners, as did holiday special last year. All Asian kids.  And many seasons had minority kids in the finals.

Now that y'all mention it, Valerie is getting larger again. And she worked so hard for that weight loss. When she took this job, I wondered how one could be a baking judge and still make weight maintenance a priority. (Larraine probably has some tips.) I was noticing that she always crosses her legs in front of her when she stands. That trick doesn't really work (at least not in my photos!).

I'm sure Eddie's passing had an impact on her efforts this year. 😞

I wonder if Bella is more focused now because there are fewer kids left. I imagine it's easy to get distracted when there are people flying past you left and right, especially if you're somewhat inclined to chatter, as Bella seems to be.

Fewer kids, or simply just getting more comfortable in the environment. I recall Linsey in season 4 had some rough times early in her season but after something like the 5th week really started coming up with consistently good stuff. Seems like that could be the case with Bella as well.

  8. Wow, Bella is surprising me! Early in the season, I thought that she was a bit careless and sloppy. But her work the last couple of weeks has been great, and this week in particular was stellar. Her decorating skills are fantastic to go along with strong baking skills. Well-deserved win, and she's definitely got momentum.

My early season prediction was Keaton for the overall win, but Bella definitely has me questioning that now!

Hope it's ok to briefly extend the discussion simply to confirm that the retrospectives are indeed available OnDemand (via Comcast in my case), as the second hour of the regular episodes.

Unfortunately, they are not there OnDemand on Fios (they only have the 42 minute competition episodes). 😞

Did you try at the end of the new episode? TV Guide lists it as a 2 hr show.

Yes, I checked that. On the FoodNetwork app, they only have the new episodes as 42 minutes, which is just the competition segment. The retrospectives are not there.

    15 hours ago, tracyscott76 said:

That's also how they are listed on Food Network's site: competition and retrospective together as one episode. If (big if) you can find the episodes online, the retrospectives are probably tacked on.

So far have only found the episodes on the FoodNetwork app (and the retrospectives were not there). Where else might they have them?

I'm enjoying the second hour although the segue last night was weird.  Maybe it was my local station but there was no introductory anything and it started while Duff was in the middle of a sentence.  I wish they'd stop featuring Jane.  She's almost as annoying as she was when she was on the show and her comments add absolutely nothing.  Matthew makes me laugh and I liked his mother's comment.  I'd like to see more of Jackson.  He was one of my favorites.

Same happened to me. The competition part seemed to go a few minutes over 1hr, and it's like the 2nd part started right at the top of the hour, so it looked like they skipped the introduction and even part of the "award" they were giving out.

Surprised not to see some of the kids from the past, like Bryn, Nyah, Alex, Davey and others who appeared on the Halloween or holiday specials. Do you think Food Network didn't ask them? Or Food Network asked and they declined?

Also thought it was a little odd that they ended the retrospective on kind of a down-note looking at the biggest mistakes instead of something more positive. And in the future, I'd love to see some of the past contestants being included in the actual competition shows as guest judges or something like that.

I liked Cydney so much but it was definitely the right call for her to go.  What a lovely young lady she is.

This will be very unpopular, but I thought Bella was horrible in her bossy, it’s my way - just follow me, YOU do it D’Von (caramel), saying whose idea was that (when Valerie and Duff praised the stars on his hand pie), pushy and not-a-team-player behavior at all from the get-go.  D’Von was in the wrong to sneak the rectangle cutter without collaborating with her.  But clearly Val and Duff knew about the issues and I’m so glad Bella didn’t win the week.  She is an entitled, I’m-so-cute mini-tyrant IMO.

Interesting, as I never got the impression of Bella as being entitled. But rather she either has a lot of older siblings or is in some other circumstance where she has to be aggressive to get what she wants (or else be in a situation where she doesn't get anything). So really more about being aggressive out of necessity in her home life.

I really disliked how Bella was ordering D'von to make the caramel, when he had tried several times, like she was the queen or something. She doesn't work well with others. I didn't see the part where D'von was doing these things, and he was wrong to, but I can understand his not wanting to cooperate with Bella. I liked how Haylin and Namiah? not only worked together well but "good jobbed" each other as they left. IMO being a good sport is important in any competition, how the kids help each other, congratulating each other, etc and hopefully the parents are proud of them.

On the other hand, to me it felt like Bella was trying to communicate and D'Von was just ignoring her, like she really cared about how the team performed and he didn't care at all.

Who are everyone’s favorites so far? I’m liking Keaton, Haylin, and Nemo, but tbh I don’t think Nemo will go much farther as it seems like he’s barely scraping by each week. Haylin is adorable with her accent and reminds me a little bit of Saylor and Brynn who are two of my other favorites from previous seasons. And Keaton just seems like the cool kid whose desserts look and taste awesome too. I was super impressed with his burger last night!

I said it after the 2nd episode; Keaton is my pick to win it all. His station always seems so clean, which says to me he's calm and organized. And clearly he knows what he's doing. I also love Bella for her personality but think she could make a huge mistake at any moment lol.

  15. The dessert imposters this episode were on the whole the best ones of all the seasons! Very impressive. Keaton definitely deserved the win! Was a little surprised the pizza wasn't in the bottom.

The retrospective episode was fun, but it felt a little odd for Duff and Val to be giving recognition to their own behaviors lol!. Seems like they were stretching to find some things to retro-spect about. I think it would be fun if they did some behind-the-scenes stuff.

Once they got to the dessert imposters section I waited for S2 Rebecca's BLT sandwich to be number one or at least be on the list. I was wholly upset that it wasn't. I wonder if she ever got the chickens she wanted, lol.

On the Food Network website, they have a gallery of the show's best dessert imposters. Not only is Rebecca's BLT not on it, but Linsey's baloney sandwich (which was #2 on the best moments show) isn't there either!

Someone at Food Network needs to get on this!😂

  17. So far I'm enjoying this season! The challenges have been good and the kids have been fun to watch. My early pick to win it all is Keaton. Not sure why, but his station always seems so organized and clean, so it feels like he will be good throughout. On the opposite end, I think Bella will win some challenges by accident lol. Love her personality, too.

Love D'Von's crush on Linsey, too! :-😍

I just thought the addition of the parents was kind of random. Aren't they backstage watching every season? Why do we need to see them this time when we haven't very much before? Was FN afraid that viewers would think they were keeping these kids in the bubble without their families?

I'm going to guess it came through some focus groups and market research. That maybe they learned/felt that audiences were getting tired of the same format every year and needed to so something to change it up. Based on the reaction here, I'm going to guess they don't stay with it in subsequent seasons.
