I thought Mr Roarke was condescending towards Tattoo and treated him like a child.

That was my initial impression too -- especially in season 1. As the seasons progressed, though, I came to absolutely love their relationship. Tattoo was always comic relief but their relationship became one of deep respect, friendship, and love. Honestly, it was very touching and sweet.

  2. I've grown to like this show, but when I compare it to the original show, this one still makes my heart hurt. OG Roarke was well established to be an immortal. We never saw or heard about family, and so I just can't buy Elena as a relative. I have no trouble making the island a sentient... partner, but Roarke had his own power. We watched him use it.

I adored and miss Ricardo Montalban (not just on Fantasy Island), and I wish this were slightly more faithful to the original. Maybe they did the best they could, since clearly they couldn't bring Ricardo back for any kind of transition, LOL. I want Elena to be more MYSTERIOUS.

Also -- I don't love the name "Elena" since Roarke's wife was named Helena. I dunno. Just too close with no explanation.

  3. When I first caught this show... season 2 or 3?... the first thing I noticed was the dearth of people of color, particularly among their work crew and artisans.

NOW I fully recognize that my initial impression was wrong. There are very definitely people of color on this show, and I've seen nothing that makes me think that Ben and Erin have issues with people of color -- NOTHING.

I just wish the people on camera were more representative of the area. I vaguely recall that the population of Laurel is something like 2/3 black. The show is more like 10-20%. (Percentages may be way off!

  4. Awww, I liked this one a lot! I adore ghosts and haunted houses. It was predictable that Ezra's ghost was real -- they set that up very clearly -- but I found the murder mystery fun.

I really hope Nick shaves and cuts his hair before the next movie. The pandemic look is not good on him.

I thought both the teenage girls did passable imitations of their mothers. Are they terrific actresses? Nah, but I wasn't expecting them to be. They were stunt casting, and it was all in fun.

Only the house itself bugged me. It was a Victorian that had had MASSIVE remodeling done, but the mirror and the furniture with the trigger for the secret door were there and the electrical hadn't been updated.

The timeline for the restoration didn't work either. I'd put it... late 90s? Tile countertops, but walls removed to make a more open main floor. That 1990s kitchen is what blew it for me believing the renovation was done after the teens found the body.

I know. I'm overthinking. Other than that I loved the movie. I've missed this channel!

I found this clip on YT from L&S.  I'd never seen it before (and I watched the show even when it was first run), so it must have been clipped from syndication at some point.  It features the main cast singing, "Milwaukee Moon".  Of course, Eddie gets to do a little singing a dancing.

Absolutely delightful! I'm sorry it was cut. It deserves to be seen.

I wouldn't mind a scene or two of family discussion on an action plan if Robyn's work comes to their door.  If they have to leave in a hurry, where do they go?  To another family member? To the ex-hubby? To a hotel? I actually thought Delilah was on to something with the electronics, albeit self-interested - encrypted phones for the household are practical.

I think that would be a very smart thing to do. When Delilah started talking about reaching out to a bail bondsman, I almost had a heart attack. Talk about blowing her cover! Robyn definitely needs to have a planning session with her family, so they aren't left hanging.

Okay someone please point out the fake eggs to me. When I first heard them mentioned I think I assumed someone was talking about the ad breaks, which I don't pay attention to. I noticed the BM paint in this episode, and just now I suddenly remembered the incredibly clunky car ads in the script from the OG series (I seriously must have blocked those out). But when did the show have fake eggs?

It wasn't the show -- it was the painfully repetitive ad breaks.

Blech!  Not to be bah humbug, but the only Christmas movies/specials I can tolerate are the classics - It's A Wonderful Life, White Christmas - heck, even A Charlie Brown Christmas.  )With everything going on in the world with the economy and inflation, Christmas may well indeed be cancelled this year!)

I did try a few HM Christmas movies last year and just.....no.  The designer coats and matching gloves/scarves, a picture perfect tree in the window of a picture perfect home on a picture perfect street owned by the main character who runs some boutique that barely has any customers, but can afford said picture perfect clothes and house, running into a picture perfect guy smack in the middle of the street carrying the essential empty to-go coffee cup and doesn't even pretend there's hot liquid in it about to spill all over, people walking around all over town dressed picture perfect as well carrying wrapped gifts in their hands.  Again...blech.  I just don't (or can't) relate.  Show me people in their sweats, hunkered down by their fire with messy hot chocolate, cookie baking in a messy, flour-strewn kitchen, a dog knocking over the tree, kids shaking wrapped gifts to figure out what they got, tired parents crashing with a glass of wine on the couch and corking off, scraping ice off their cars after a storm.  I don't know....more real stuff.  I know, I know......these movies are an escape from reality, but they are just so unrealistic that I long for a bit of real reality

God, me too! Those movies will rot your teeth and give you a tummy ache. I feel the same about their romances. Blech.

Some reality and fewer clichés (and YES, I mean clichés, not tropes)  would make for MUCH better movies in this day and age.

  9. Sigh. I've seen all the movies so many times that, at this point, I don't watch the channel except for the new mysteries. I'll miss it during the next four or five months.

I LOVED that they tried to show two new movies per month this year. I hope they expand more movies and more months. I really, really, like the cozies.

Why don't they do a weekly mystery series? If they can afford a period piece like WCTH, they can afford a contemporary mystery.

That was a funny clip. Thanks for posting it. I wonder when it was filmed because the cashier's comment "Is there an epidemic" seems prophetic. I hope Jeanne had baked enough 7-Up cakes.

That was probably a decade or more ago. Maybe even 20 years ago. Her YouTube channel is filled with clips. Go to the beginning and ENJOY!

Yes. They made her such a witch from the beginning that you really had to dislike her. I was really surprised and encouraged by the change in their dynamic in this movie, because I don’t dislike the actress. I really don’t think Lynn softened so much as explained her ill feelings/attitude toward Roe and her antics. After all, as she says, she still has to make the solid case and ensure the guilty party doesn’t get away because of procedural technicalities. Having Roe involved has to be like having an unpredictable kid at a social gathering. And it’s not like blowing the case because of something Roe did was outside the realm of possibilities up to this point. (Hence, the “She’s got a point” discussion.)

I really liked that Lynn said straight out that Roe was not only good at what she does, but was the best. And then she made a SOLID point about why she can't just jump in and follow her. I liked it!!

I pretty much figured out who did it as soon as they appeared & started talking. Too much conversation for a supposedly nobody minor character.

Ha! Me too. First scene she was in, I said, "She did it." My husband asked, "How do you know?", and I replied, "Because she's unnecessary. Too much dialogue on a character that didn't have to be there."

Later, when she said something about love hadn't been kind to her either, I said, "And there's the motive."

  13. Mystery 101 is -- was? -- my favorite of the currently airing mystery series. The leads have great chemistry. and I like the supporting cast, the setup, etc.

It's not perfect. Last night's mystery had a few holes in it. (The cops missed that the closet had been cleaned out??? And that the one table had been cleared?) I called the killer as soon as he showed on screen and mentioned the fraternity.

BUT I still enjoyed it, and I loved it when he told her he loved her.

Then the cliffhanger ruined it. Completely. Killed all my happy vibes from the previous scene. Yes, I think it's probably an undercover thing -- but I don't think I care. At best, I'll come here and see your reviews before I watch the next one. I might, however, just delete it off the DVR and give up on the series.

So excited about all the new mysteries coming in August...it's helping me get through the awful Christmas July!

Me too! I was excited to catch a couple of Jane Doe movies this weekend, though. Honestly, during the Christmas months I don't even check out the channel to see what's on. Looks like I might have missed some good mysteries at not-prime-time.

    Can't wait until August, though!!

  15. I agree -- Tim should never have been out there! 35% heart function? I feel bad for the person who didn't get a spot because of him.

I hope the bloodthirsty big game hunting woman taps early and hard. Not a fan at ALL.

Wasn't fond of the other big game hunter either. Could he have legally killed that cat? Am impressed by his skills, but come on.

Biko didn't bother me. He's entertaining, and I love his knife. The bone through the piercing didn't even bug me.

Why, oh why, don't these people practice fasting? Fasting is a mental game, not a physical one. If they had learned to do it, they wouldn't be so "ravenous" just a few days in. (I say this from experience. I'll admit, I haven't gone longer than two weeks, but I do 5-7 days routinely, and it's just not a big deal.)

I haven't watched the show since the stupid season where they had pairs. I got about halfway through that one and gave up. Seems like they have a LOT more supplies now. Real bows? Wow. I hope no one actually hurts one of these bears.

Not related to the plot, but boy the makeup people, etc. aren’t doing German any favors.

Especially when compared to the flashbacks they showed, her face is so noticeably more pinched and sharp.

    I don't think that's a makeup thing. I'm seriously wondering if she's anorexic.
