  1. I also started Secrets of Penthouse per Hulu recommendation, this is more interesting in a way with the kids being interviewed.

The Guccione family reminds me a bit of The Godfather with all the kids and nieces and nephews working in the business while on summer break from their Ivies, and the subsequent falling out with each son.

I knew of Bob’s NY mansion but had no idea Penthouse was so profitable and outsold Playboy for a time.

  2. I had no idea there was a season 2, watching now! I remember The Howard Stern Show did Playmate evaluations around this same time, so he always complained that the “Who Wants to be a Playboy Centerfold” idea was stolen from him. I don’t know how I missed this, was it on network TV or Fox Reality?

All these women were stunning and centerfold material, I don’t know what Shallan and Lauren were going on about re: body image. The online commenting culture and slut-shaming was extremely trash at that time, I’m sorry they had to go through that. Glad to see that their lives turned out well overall.

I thought they were pretty sympathetic, although I didn't expect any less - TPTB seem to be at least as interested in trashing Hefner/Playboy (not saying that he doesn't deserve it) as they do in presenting these stories.

My nitpick remains that a lot (if not most) of these crimes aren't directly attributable to or caused by Playboy, so I think the title is a bit exploitative as are the episode descriptions ("A Playboy model writes a tell-all book about Hef and is later found dead."  Are we supposed to infer that Hef had her whacked?), but I guess with so many program viewing choices these days, eyeballs must be captured by any means necessary.

This! I didn’t know much about her, so I was surprised to learn Jill Ann died three months after Hef.🙄😑 So much for empty conspiracy theory.

I was also a bit surprised they bothered to do a Dorothy Stratten episode since her case is so well-known.

I found the Paula Sladewski case the most interesting of the recent batch.

Stephanie Adams might make for a good episode if well-researched, pretty dark story though.😕

  4. I watched ep 1 and 2 of season 2. I knew one of the Bentleys had been involved with a financial scammer, but didn’t know the whole story, so this was really interesting to me. I’ll look for the Dateline. The Brande, Sandy, Mandy era was when I started paying attention to the world of Playboy.

I thought they made a bit of a stretch to Manson just because Victoria was friendly with Tate and Polanski, but ok whatever-he’s a true crime staple. You Must Remember This podcast did a great “Charlie Manson’s Hollywood” season on his celebrity adjacency.

So Chrishell is actually married to G, and Jason and Mari Lu aren't together anymore but she and Nicole are still jealous of Chrishell.

Amanza had to have spine surgery, and Mary got a new puppy. Otherwise everybody is still pretty much in the same spot they were at the end of the season.

They did a lie detector test that said Jason is still in love with Chrishell. This really is her show. And Amanza slept with Jason sometime in the last 10 years or so.

Wow! I need to finish up the reunion. I like the twins, but yikes at Jason sleeping his way through his employees/contractors.
Even if there’s no “me toos” it engenders resentment like when Nicole (?) said Chrishelle got preferential listings because she was with Jason at the time.

  6. I stopped listening to the pod probably 6 or 7 months ago because Holly used her “Ewww” voice when referring to Hef as being too atheist to participate in their ghost-hunting. I commented about it on their IG, but the comment was erased.
I did watch “The Playboy Murders” ID show she hosted and found it entertaining.

In the book Dawn knew nothing about birth control or where babies came from. I think it's Trish that asks her about it and if her mother ever told her. Of course neither mother did. I've always wondered if it was more likely for Dawn to somehow not know anything despite going to public school all her life made sense because it was the 70s. But I'm not sure my high school in the 90s there's no way any girl no matter how shy, religious or innocent wouldn't have learned in the hallways of high school.

Does anyone know exactly what year this takes place? If Dawn hadn’t been hit by the car, I feel like she could have gotten an abortion in 1970s NY, and gone on with her life.
I haven’t read the books in years, but didn’t Lillian’s husband rape Laura Sue? I was a bit surprised Dawn accused her of “seducing her father in law” since she obviously knows how that family rolls from Phillip’s entitlement.

  8. Just starting Dawn via Google Play since I’m a cord-cutter.  I knew I had forgotten to do  something this weekend.

OMG, why do these two opposite gender teenagers share a bed? 😬 I believe CPS guidelines wouldn’t even let them share a room after age 12. 🙅🏽‍♀️ I guess people weren’t as closely monitored in the 70’s, especially without egregious abuse/police involvement, but yikes. You’d think one of them would move to the couch.

Nevermind, I guess this is the couch/sofa bed in the Richmond apartment.

I have been thinking that Jackie is bipolar for ages.  Something is very wrong there, and she needs help.  Honestly, even though I looooooooove Marshall, something's a little wrong with him that he wants to fix her too.

Exactly. Jackie seems troubled with all her vague statements about “bad things” back home and need for time-outs, but Marshall’s Captain Save-um statements about her and to. her. face. were “Yikes!”. He’s a good-looking guy, (and those pancakes looked good) but that was red flags all over the place.
A mentally healthy woman wouldn’t provide the drama and fawning gratitude he may need.

  10. It’s very good, I love hearing Pam’s story directly from her.
Her childhood was more traumatic than I thought even she’s spoken of some things before. The Tommy Lee relationship makes total sense now since her parents pretty much behaved the same way.

I had no idea she dated Mario Van Peebles so that was new info. 😳Though I see where America’s sex symbol dating a Black man would have been kept quiet in 1990.

Oh man, I tried. I love Jon Bernthal - wasted talent for this show. I was both bored and confused. The ending came and I still don't have answers, nor did I enjoy the conclusion.

    1. Why did Lisa Beck kill herself? Did i miss an answer to this? She was perfectly happy at that party and then just. . . what?

I assume Lisa followed Julian into sex work and realized he was more a “boyfriend pimp” and wasn’t in love with her, or perhaps she was assaulted and realized the life isn’t all champagne and pool parties? Like you said, they could have cut out 90% of the flashbacks to give us Lisa and her sister’s story and it would have made for compelling tv. I shouldn’t have to write a better show in my head.😂

Daphne knows he cheats. So she cheats too. I think she and Ethan hooked up. And apparently it revved Ethan up enuf that he could do it twice in a day.

I think Cam also knows the kids might not be his. But this is a couple who is all about putting on a show, even for each other.

They also made a point to show that the porn star Ethan was watching very much resembled Daphne.

    How about this:

    • Lucia is in the water for whatever reason. Maybe she is even feeling a bit like literally drowning her sorrows.
    • Daphne and Cameron are on the beach for one last time.
    • Cameron says sees Lucia and tells Daphne he's going for one last swim.
(Because Cameron cannot leave well enough alone.)
    • Daphne sees Cameron heading towards Lucia and decides to join him.
    • Daphne turns her back on the water to talk to the new arrivals.
(It only takes seconds for a drowning to happen, and if Cameron pulls Lucia's leg like he did Harper's, the drownings could all happen unseen underwater.)

But what’s Cameron’s motive though? Daphne (and Harper and Ethan) all know he cheats, and hiring escorts seems to be accepted behavior among his “sociopathic” peer group. He’s not a politician or a minister with a reputation to protect. Outside of a pimp (or fake pimp) to rough him up, I don’t see where Lucia can really harm him for shafting her, unless she steals Daphne’s jewelry or something as payment. The fact that his not having her money would expose him as secretly broke would be a good motive, but any $1300 charge could pop up and do that.

  14. I’m going to speculate that one or more of the guests will get roughed up by Lucia’s pimp (and whatever associates he may have) and perhaps that results in a body. Like in season 1 where Kai stole the jewelry intending to hire a lawyer to get his family’s stolen land back, it was the Native Hawaiian’s revenge against forces of colonialism- the hotel itself and rich white Americans. In season 2 we have rich white American men who worship Godfather movies- what if they have to tangle with the real mafia and it’s more like “Gomorra” than “The Sopranos”? You’ve got F. Murray Abraham who was in Scarface, plus Christopher, it would be very meta .
