Man, that was rough.  Possibly one of the roughest openings yet?  That's saying something.

And despite all of the roasting, he plays it safe with Jared Leto of all people?  Leto probably loves being called "Hot Jesus."

Oh, shit, Da'Vine!  I guess the new voting system really is changing things if the arguably lesser known nominee takes it.  Good for her though: heard she was excellent in The Holdovers.

She was great and the movie was my favorite of 2023.

This show is traditionally one of the year’s best—enough to usually record it. Lost count of how many times I’ve watched the Led Zeppelin tribute. So while most of this show was highly entertaining and each had a tear-inducing highlight, the Barry Gibb tribute ending was disappointing. Ariana Dubose is talented but that whole number seemed to be about her performance, not BG and not engaging the audience the way those finales usually do.

How did Dionne Warwick have to wait so long? Kudos for the Queen Latifah tribute. Billy’s was great fun. Renee Fleming’s was stunning. Barry Gibbs wrote great songs, they corralled Sir Paul and Streisand, but fizzled.

I agree about the Gibb finale….underwhelmed with it. It was missing a lot of the energy you usually see in the last musical number of the night.

I didn’t really watch — just kind of scanned through in preview mode — but it sounded like they were putting in a stent and potentially “getting the stones out.” Not sure if that meant lithotripsy or some other procedure. Basically, the stuck stone started acting up again, causing extreme pain and vomiting. They admitted her and decided to put the stent in to help the stone move and allow fluid to flow past it. They were either going to remove the stone or have to go back and do it later.

I had a stuck stone five years ago with a similar procedure. They put in the stent, but it was clear there was an infection and you can’t do lithotripsy when there’s an infection (could send that infection into the bloodstream). So, I had to go home, take antibiotics for a couple of weeks, then go back to get the stone broken up.

But letting the stone hang out for months? Yikes. Maybe my urologist is just more aggressive. With my stuck stone, it started on a Thursday morning. I saw the urologist Monday. He said he didn’t think I could pass it on my own and he wasn’t going to make me wait it out, so first thing Tuesday morning I was getting the stent put in. If letting it stay there for months is the norm, I guess I owe my urologist a huge thank you!

I had symptoms of a stone in April and didn’t have it taken out until August because I wasn’t having severe pain (as well as scheduling issues). Wouldn’t recommend waiting that long bc now my creatinine is high and we’re not sure if it’s related or not. The stent was the worst part of it for me. Very painful to have it in, but I only had it in after surgery for a week to minimize ureteral scarring.

Seriously?  I think they have wrung all of the soap out of this opera that they can.

    Pass.

There are quite a few books in the series they can draw from, but I can only watch a couple episodes of this before I quit for a long time. Much prefer the books.

It feels very contrived but I do think he wanted his son to marry Diana.  I don't know what his reasoning would be beyond he thought she would be his ticket to some sort of acceptance.

Unpopular opinion...I do not like the lady playing Diana.

I feel like she is letting her resemblance to Diana do all the heavy lifting. She is like a Diana impersonator.

The lady who played young Diana does not look much like the real thing but she seems to have got the real essence of the woman that many in the world adored, rightly or wrongly.

I know I am alone in this so I'll go sit at my table for one.

I won’t say I don’t like Debicki’s portrayal, but my son and I watch together and think Emma (Corrin? Corwin?) was better. So you’re not quite alone.

In the book, which I adored, Calvin was an extremely highly regarded and influential scientist as as well as extremely homely. I guess they decided he needed to be attractive for the show to appeal.

I'm disappointed by the passing reference to rowing when in fact, it was very significant in the book. He brought Elizabeth onto the team, taught her everything, it was something they did together and her participation continued after his death. I suspect they'll make it something she takes up as a tribute, instead. They're following the basic plot but with plenty of changes.

My favorite part of the book was the inner dialogue of Six-Thirty. I knew this couldn't translate to TV, so I don't expect much from the series going forward.

I just said the same thing to my husband about how they really haven't done much with the rowing storyline in this show yet. But then the doctor mentioned it so maybe we’ll see more later.

Very sad, but I will continue to watch, although the personification of the dog is a bit much for me. I do see dogs as socialized animals, but this show does not seem to be the right venue for what amounts to a talking dog, even if the dog's words aren't really outside of a dog's comprehension.

I wonder if the dog narration occurs in the book too, but I don't plan to read it. Maybe someone who has read it could reply here to just that one point in spoiler tags?

One more book question to reply to briefly with spoiler tags:
Is Elizabeth supposed to be on the autistic/Asperger's spectrum?

    Spoiler

Yes, the dog narrates in the book a few times that I can remember. I don’t know if they ever mention Elizabeth being on the spectrum in the book (not that that was a thing we knew about back then) but it sure seemed that way to me when I was reading (and watching).

Was he supposed to show up at that meeting?  His neighbor was upset. Why did he act like such a jerk?

Yes, she said she needed someone who looked like him to back her up.

  9. First episode aired in the U.S. tonight and, having read the book series (which I loved) I am pretty underwhelmed. Too much “looking into the distance, pondering life” from Maggie, I don’t like that it looks like it’s going to be her idea to break up with Andrew (a change from the book) and they changed/apparently aren’t going to use some of why she left to go back home.

They brought in characters from future books that I can’t really remember well enough to know if their storylines are going to be the same and it’s interesting that Connie is a woman (in the book it’s Conrad “Connie”) - who I recognized from Orphan Black. (And Frank was in a few episodes of Outlander, so that’s been fun). I’ll watch a couple more to see how it goes, but I was hoping for more in the first episode.

After reading the books between season 1 and 2, I have to say I enjoyed the books more.

Same. I’ve read all the books and the storylines that aren’t in the books are distracting me. And it’s more “wholesome” for lack of a better word, than I remember the books being. But I’m still watching, just started season 3. I’ve liked Brooke Elliot since Drop Dead Diva and am amused that the brother from Election is Bill. (Chris something, I don’t remember his last name).

My first thought as well. I suffer from occasional migraines and even infrequent ones are awful. There's no way Carlin is experiencing that several times a week and still traveling, shopping and running around all hours of the day and night. I guess fans are bored with the seizure storyline and the broken toe fizzled out, so now she's cooked up a new malady for clicks and sympathy.

Also, she posts new reels every day on Instagram, so when are these migraines occurring?

I agree. When I have a migraine, it usually lasts three days and even when it’s done sometimes I feel really spacey.

So now Zade has low/borderline low iron and is on some prescription for that + high/borderline high lead. Yet his genius parents didn't realize what they were going to the dr for. They thought they were going to follow up on these issues, only to arrive and find out that no this was in fact his 15 mo well appointment and he'd have follow up bloodwork for those two issues in Sept bc they need to give the iron script time to work as well as time to see if the lead works its way out of his system. My god how will these kids survive with two such dumbass parents who don't know what they're going to the dr for - and had to call ahead to be like "we have an appt today, right, we weren't sure"?

But fear not, it happens with Carlin's own appts all the time where they show up hours late or on the wrong day. But as Carlin points out - whoa whoa whoa, we've never missed one of my appointments, they always get us in even if it's hours late 🙄. Ah to be a young white couple showing up with two kids in tow . . . . I'm sure offices in small town Tenn bend over backwards the same way when it's an unattractive 45 yr old or a person of color showing up hours late or on the wrong day . . . .

Then Carlin goes on about how it's just a thing - they say the date/time and I put it into my phone wrong, I have a problem with days/dates, as Evan giggles along. Funny how you NEVER have any problem posting the wrong link to whatever damn shorts set you're wearing that day or whatever cheap makeup you're shilling. Also Lord Headship - if your woman is soooooo dumb that she can't handle days and times, can't you - her keeper who quit his job to be with her 24-7 - be in charge of putting appts into YOUR phone?

And Evan and Layla both "caught a cough" from the grandparents' farm. Hmm . . . you'd think any cough you caught from staying in their dusty attic would've resolved in the last 17 days, no? Guess they are remaining in complete denial of the current uptick in Covid, not to mention their own sisters putting on YT and IG that their kids have RSV, Katie has bronchitis etc.

I'm not a dr, maybe Zade has low iron bc Carlin had low iron when she was pregnant. But damn do they give their kids ZERO real food? Isn't it well known that cereals like Cream of Rice which are given to small kids routinely are really iron fortified? Even things like Cheerios are pretty high in iron; to say nothing of real food like eggs. But I guess Doritos, Fritos, cheese puffs and whatever else are not like that. I mean he snacked continuously at the grandparents' farm and it was constantly a cookie or cracker in hand.

Funny also that Carlin was all - OMG should I be worried about high lead, what does that mean, where does it come from. The dr - well it can come from him chewing on antique furniture etc. Oh phew we don't have that and he doesn't chew on furniture. Uh morons you are home exactly never and aren't exactly attentive parents. Do you know the exact origins of every piece of furniture at G&K's house and the Stewart grandparents' house or what paint he's licking at BSB? And then it was explained that lead can affect IQ and "learning levels" - oh phew - he's soooo smart and cute as a button. Uh he's 1 and his parents are dumbasses, how exactly do you know that he's soooo smart?

So much to respond to in your post!  My comment is focused on the never getting the right days/dates, etc. Does Carlin have dyslexia or what the one with numbers called, dyscalculus or something like that? (I know dysgraphia has to do with writing). Or is it “just” being immature or irresponsible?

All I see is what appears to be Cokes.  She was just shilling her green drink and wanting compliments on her outfit, which she got.

All sugar - Coke, lemonade, maple syrup. And sour cream for their “taco salads.”
