It's more like, "she doesn't."  Yara wanted a simple wedding with NO guests.  She didn't want a big event because her family and friends couldn't attend.  This was explained to us a few times and to Jovi (probably) innumerable times.  She KNOWS that Jovi's hovering and devoted mother is used to being in control...so Yara tries to maintain the upper hand while being respectful. It doesn't seem to work.

"Trashy Vegas ceremony"?  Insulting. The Vegas weddings I've attended (only two) were definitely NOT TRASHY.  Las Vegas has  beautiful churches that are well taken care of by the locals, the tourists, and the gamblers who visit.  The hotels compare with top hotels all over the world.

I'm generalizing here about Vegas weddings, in my own subjective opinion, and seeing what I have seen from Jovi and Yara.

While Yara seems to be getting a better relationship with Jovi’s mom, it’s still so annoying how mom thinks she knows best. The “small” engagement party she invited a bunch of people to. Continuing to nag and whine about not being invited to her sons wedding like it’s the end of the world. She acts like it’s something she’s entitled to, but saying that to Yara, whose family can’t come, is like a slap in the face. I guess they got it all worked out and now have a whole group going to Vegas for the wedding (maybe that was the plan all along and it was just for storylines).

and same with the conversation a few episodes ago about them maybe living in another country, her saying they can’t do that, she’d miss out on seeing grandkids... when that is exactly what Yara and her family are going through

They don't want a small family wedding at home where his parents could at least attend, but they want a trashy Vegas ceremony with a group of his friends ?

I call BS on Harris's story.  From all I know, this is not how Belizean society works.

There are quite a few men who are just rolling stones and have multiple "children" that they occasionally see and may throw a couple bucks to.  Women are generally blamed for having children out of wedlock (sluts, "bad women" and jezebels are the common themes), but for men, its like a "natural urge"  And sadly, the children raised by these single mothers and sporadic fathers make the same mistakes.  The men who are into this sort of thing will kinda have a "main family" who they claim.

So the idea that Harris just gets back with his ex for the sake of his children doesn't ring true.  It sounds like he does whats convenient for him.  If thats going back with his ex, thats what he is going to do.  And its much, much easier if the ex doesn't demand or expect very much.

Harris, of course, is an individual, but I've seen this play out enough times that I'm highly suspicious.

This is all so sad. But true, not just in Belize but I am sure in many places.

I'm surprised at this comment.  I didn't see Mike's mom as manipulative or conniving.  She seemed down to Earth and gave good advice, without being a hovering mom, like so many.  She seemed to understand how Mike is an adult and although she doesn't know if they are a good fit, it is not up to her.

Also, I would call Natalie manipulating due to several confessional moments where she talks of using her "vomanly vays" and also how she has to weigh winning an argument against the ultimate goal of getting married.  Looks like a woman with a plan.  And I wouldn't say her mom taught her these things, though it may be true, because I don't know that and also, I love Natalie's mom.

Russian women are taught to be shrewed when it comes to finding a partner. Marriage is the ultimate goal for most women there, and a woman in her 30s will definitely be having lots of wheels turning behind her eyes when chit chatting with a potential partner. I don't see it as bad, but they do have a grasp on how to act/what to say/cook/wear to reach the male psyche. I'm not sure if "manipulative" is the word, maybe clever planning. Clean his house, cook good food, be good with his mom, dress sexy, impress his friends, etc. I found Mike's mom surprisingly chill and hands off.

I know Natalie keeps calling Mike a liar and a cheater. Did she call the bride-to-be/best friend the same things when they spoke on the phone?  Didn’t the other woman talk to Natalie?  Did Natalie just say “thank you” and hang up?

Natalie cannot believe that Mike and Sarah could spend a night together in the same house and not have sex, because in Russia there is not really a concept of platonic relationships between (young) men and (young) women. Gender differences are more drawn out, a man will typically treat a woman his age like a woman and not like a buddy. So I understand where she is coming from with her perspective about Mike possibly sleeping with a friend when she spent the night at his house. Here in the US, it is not uncommon to find platonic man-woman buddies.

  5. Whoever said that Mike needs someone more flannel shirted, that is SPOT ON. Mike and Natalie are so I'll suited, it's not even a joke. I genuinely don't think he's into women like Natalie, who like to wear makeup, heels, spend a significant amount of time on their hair, etc. I truly think he would prefer a woodsy, country woman who doesn't wear makeup, likes to drink beer, likes to hunt maybe, etc. Mike is a backwoods guy and I don't think they would want a fancy woman. He looks like he never, ever dresses up. If Natalie's goal was to get married ASAP, she could've looked into mailing herself out to potential grooms in Turkey, Greece, or somewhere round that region.

Apparently Jovi can’t drink on the job so he must remain sober for a month at a time. We only see “off duty Jovi” who must start drinking on the flight home to NoLa and continues to do so throughout his time off.

I don't get the need to drink constantly. I am a social drinker, meaning I will have a glass of wine once a week or so to relax at a restaurant or a shot of vodka if I go out, maybe twice a month max, just for a rush or buzz, but also TBH because I don't want to be the only one not partaking and I drink responsibly. I could easily go the rest of my life without it and not care.  I feel sad for people who seem to be addicted to the need for alcohol. Coffee, on the other hand, I could barely last a day without. Thank goodness caffeine addiction doesn't carry the stigma or cognitive impairment as alcohol.

I still there's a stereotype in poorer countries that everyone in America is rich and has a big house like on TV.  Then they come over and reality sets in.  Fast food and fat people everywhere, living in trailers like Mike or empty apartments like the other one.

Americans want to get a nice home and nice car but it's not reality even for many who are born here.  And they don't all want to come to America.  Western Europe and up and coming Eastern European countries are appealing too.

Yes, exactly. People from there often migrate to the US with plans of making it rich (I am excluding those who came here on work.visas). Virtually all Eastern European that I have met complained about how it turned out to be in the US: endless strip malls, fast food chains, obesity, staying home and watching TV instead of going out, loneliness, etc. Most Russians in the US gravitate towards major cities where they can simulate their old lifestyle as much as possible and find other Russian/Ukrainian friends.

  8. I have been to Belize once (Placensia region) and felt,,,fairly meh. Kinda like Key West, with a lot more poverty. There are beautiful areas, but I found Cancun had way options in all ateas. I wonder if Stephanie purposely travelled to so-so vacay spots bc of stereotypes of tourist hungry local men.

Stephanie looks youthful when she's hula-hooping, but she walks like an old lady (older than she is).

Stephanie misses the mark bc she tries to look way younger than she actually is. If she aimed at looking, say, a dignified 42 year old (10 years younger than her age) rather than like a 25 year old she would nail it. Also, paying attention to her voice, manner of speech, hands, would be a big help.

If Yara loves the idea of living in Budapest so much, why didn't she find a rich Hungarian (or other European) guy to marry? I get that she wants to be closer to her family, but why isn't that equally important for Jovi, jerk though he may be? It's only 400 miles from Moldova to Hungary, but it's over 5500 miles from NOLA to Budapest. Also, he seems to be working on rigs in the Atlantic, and it's probably easier access from a major port city.

Stephanie looks youthful when she's hula-hooping, but she walks like an old lady (older than she is).

Stephanie did look youthful when hula hooping. Maybe that's why she does it so much?

I pray that Yara and Jovi stop the screaming/cursing/bickering over petty things when the baby arrives. I hate it when couples who clearly have nothing in common and don't like each other have a baby.

I love the way Natalie puts the washer woman hair up with minimal makeup when she needs someone on her side like the therapist.  Mike is a dud. No personality.  Why does he say he loves her in his thinking head.  Why did he bring her back?  I think he just wants to come home to a woman, eat, drink beer, and get laid on a daily basis.  Natalie just wants to be in America, get the green card and see what happens from there.  No love there.  Marriage is hard enough when there’s love.  These two don’t have a prayer.

I think Natalie truly wants a future with Mike, I don't get the vibe that she is conniving to eventually leave him. She is 35/36 and realizing that her biological clock is at 11:59 if she wants to plan a family.

Mike is a terrible person. I don't care how nutty Natalie is. He brought her here with the expectation that they would be getting married. Of course Natalie wants to talk about planning the wedding. He's leading her on, and worse, he's delighting in her misery. He mutters about "communication issues" but he won't talk. He's treating her badly so she'll dump him and he can complain about ungrateful bitches who don't appreciate a nice guy like him. I bet he's full on MGTOW. There's a heavy streak of misogyny there.

I think Mike sucks in his own way lately, but I dont see misogyny coming from him. He is just a guy who is no longer interested in a certain woman, and is being incredibly passive aggressive about it. I think he truly does need, like someone mentioned, a localish woman who may not be glamorous but can share his lifestyle and won't look down on him for watching TV and eating what he likes. He is not doing Natalie the honor of being direct with her and sending her home.

Natalie is used to Russian dating customs and I see the cultural disconnect. If Mike was Russian, he would slather her with love, flowers, and attention while simultaneously dating other women behind her back.

Does she get raped at the end of this episode, like for real ? He seemed pretty uninterested in her sexually all this time, while she seemed like the sex hungry cougar. Tables suddenly flipped ?

Regardless...the economy in both of these countries is bad.

  15. Mike is hopeless. He repeats over and over that they lack communication but he barely says two words. I feel bad for Natalie at this point. Natalie is only trying so desperately with Mike bc she is ready to settle and she thinks it's her last shot at love and family. Mike tolerates her, barely. He is pretty rude. I'd be done if I were her. What it LOOKS like to me is that he is 100% checked out, but doesn't want a confrontation with her, and so he will just let her visa run out and send her back.

Julia came from Ukraine to live on a sad farm with a pest control guy and his weird parents. She has to sleep in a storage room and pick up pig poop.

    how bad is Ukraine?

In Ukraine, you can expect to live with your parents in addition to your husband and children for your whole life in a 2 room apartment in an old building. Poor medical and dental services compared to here. Poor economy with little chance of bettering your situation. And for women, difficulty finding a man to marry after 25 or so. Bribery is rampant to get anything done well (even life saving surgeries).

Mike is the typical common man of the Pacific Northwest, and they DO NOT like makeup, especially not caked on like Natalie's. I know this from spending lots of time in that region. Of course downtown Seattle at night is probably different.

I noticed this. Russian/Ukrainian men expect women to look ultra feminine, with perfectly done makeup, hair, nails, and pretty dresses daily. Yara is an example of this. Natalie and Mike are fundamentally different people and he will never become the person she wants him to be but, he is a man and she wants to have babies.

You aren’t alone. I’m thinking if I had to move to the States and live in a rural area, I would be happy for the distraction. Julia isn’t allowed to work until the adjusted status comes through so why not just help out on the farm?

What’s the alternative? Move to a new apartment with limited funds and just stay at home with no one or nothing to keep you company?

Yes, I simply cannot believe that Brandon did not inform Julia that they would be living in a farm. Also, not to knock night owls, but if I were a young man looking to get married, I would not pick a young lady who at 26, prefers to wake up at lunchtime. (Unless she has a normal night job, like in a hospital or front desk of a hotel or whatever. Not go go dancing in a club). If she will become a mother anytime soon, no more sleeping til lunch for many years, as children's daily routines begin early in the morning.

Generally speaking, getting up early in the morning is seen as efficient, responsible, and "adulting." So is going to bed at a reasonable hour.

  19. Maybe I am the outlier. But if Julia is living on Brandon's parents farm, why is it so horrible for her to spend a couple hours a day working ? Is she supposed to do literally nothing ? This is Brandon's fault, I don't know what he told her, but if he isn't providing a separate home for her and she has to live with his parents ,. I see it as fair to help out.

Can someone with contact with Eastern European people share some insight? I guess I can understand being concerned about the healthiness of various forms of female birth control. But does that mean that there are lots of enormous families of children there because their birth control is not as effective? Are Americans being fed a load of lies about alternative birth control?  Are Eastern European women not as fertile? Possibly because of unhealthy pathogens that they are exposed to there? Do they just not have as much sex? Are the men less fertile?
I’m surprised that Yara, considering her previous pregnancy loss and the surgery, go immediately to an OB in the US.  No waiting for the drunk boyfriend to calls her a liar to drag himself back.  I’m surprised her parents didn’t tell her to go to the doctor right away.  Why have we never met her parents? Did we meet them?

Eastern European are generally more "pro natural" than taking pills.

I will assume they use other forms of BC but Russia has a high abortion rate.

1 kid per family is the norm. Maybe 2.

Yes, I get that. But in one time?! Like they came in a 12 pack or something ? I would appreciate the gift of a beautiful gold necklace with a diamond pendant; I have several necklaces but I would feel wierd receiving 10 necklaces as a gift. Maybe it's just me.
