I don't think he figured it out until that moment and it was unlikely when he was finally about to have sex with Jane his mind would be on the job but I definitely don't think that was blood and that he is definitely not dead and whatever it was cushioned the blow from the bullet! but I do think you are on the right track with faking his death as he didn't react and go down till a moment after whatever it was exploded from his top.

Maybe but unlikely gunpowder would look like that especially since it wasn't point blank, it looked more liquid to me like ink or something

Anyone else notice that the "blood" was black where if he was shot directly in the heart it should be bright red. I'm suss on this and think there is going to be some twist and he had something in his pocket which protects him to some extent.
