Real life hit, missed a few days here. Going back... canning. My mom had the lids that had the paraffin on them already, and that helped, but we had to get new lids every time I think? Not entirely sure. She has a nice canning guidebook that has the instructions in it. Mouses/mice. Med uses a trackball as well and has had it for over a decade. He loves it but I cannot get used to it. I tried opening mine but the screws were locked in place so I just tried to clean it the best I could. I did discover I have to sit higher as well at the chair and that helps. I had it down all the way which is just lazy on my part. When the chair is down my feet touch the floor better though. Joe, those are some cool shirts! Course I think it dated wrong for me - what I saw just now were Jedi shirts, but still cool nonetheless *note to self, check here daily* I remember seeing Niagra Falls as a kid - absolutely beautiful, but that was before you needed the passport or enhanced driver's license (we can use them supposedly in Wisconsin to get up into Canada). Otherwise, I know Door county Wisconsin is rather nice, but most the time you still need a car and you'd have to fly up there into Green Bay and then drive it another hour to get to the more resort area. Tarot I thought that as well! Med thought meanwhile of River from Firefly. We even had a geek-argument over it, it was rather cute. I still say it was River Song. Better be Doctor Who ;)

Honestly, I've loved all of them so far, Nine, Ten, Eleven, can't wait for Twelve, Three, Four - I love my local library system! Sure you will find faults, you will find what quirks you like or dislike, you will find which writers are your favorite and which writers whose episodes you still watch but only because it's Doctor Who. Something about the show spanning so many years, so many countries, and so many cultures - it's something that brings people together into these odd little family-like communities. Even then, each of these communities has the same quirks as the show. I'm still trying to get my fiance hooked though - he's not a fan of the British humor side of it sadly or the "cheap" special effects of Classic Who. Here's hoping I can get him hooked on Peter Capaldi!

That definitely helps! What you describe is what my mom did for canning too, but for some reason, her process always seemed to take two days or so - it was exhausting. Course, since breaking my perfectionist habits, I've also learned that doing things with her around takes about ten times as long just for that reason. My mother also was a straight A student in college who majored in home economics. Go figure! But you're right - the homemade jam is always the best. Closest thing I can find here is Smuckers has a line called "Orchard's Best" which is in a small jar, and the ingredients for them seem to be fruit, sugar, fruit pectin, and citric acid. That is a shame, not just for the fruit, but for the shade, and that magic that the fruit trees invoke for kids. We have cherry and apple trees on this lot, and have had raspberries and strawberries as well in a garden in the past; as a kid, there was just this mystical feeling about going out early morning and picking fruit off the plants. You don't get that with vegetables, only with fruits. A neighbor growing up also had a grove of trees that was shaped in a way that it formed a sort of fort - another mystical entity of a child's imagination. Something about the sounds of the breeze going through them, the floral fragrence of greenery, laying on your back looking up at the sky and just wondering what is up there, having some ideas from books and movies and television, but not really knowing yet - that sense of wonder and awe we cling to as adults as our connections to those memories of our childhoods. My start was being a scifi fan in the 80s already (yay ST:TNG!) and hearing about what would have been Eight and the TV Movie. My parents didn't let me watch :( Then later, I was on TWoP and hooked on the show House, when a couple people there kept talking about Doctor Who. I wandered over to LINDA, read Jacob's recaps, and was hooked. My first episode was "The Empty Child" and I was immediately hooked - not just as a show du jour, but as a show for life.

Ooo, strawberry jam! It's been ages since I've done anything like that in the kitchen, and my mother would when I was a kid. It's just fallen to the wayside now that I'm an adult and the canning supplies are scattered everywhere. Maybe this fall I'll have to do some smaller batches of produce (nothing is in season yet this far north). As for actual productivity, Bryon has me helping with a project of his, which is being hosted on a cloud server along with the software to access and edit it. Sadly, the server or part of it crashed last night and it has been rather laggy since. So, today has been a zero-productivity day because of it. I still haven't cleaned this mouse - and I miss the type that were easy to open so you could just wipe the ball down. I think the mouse dropping along with the lag was half the problem. I just don't want to accidentally break the really nice mouse when I take it apart to clean it, which is why I haven't done it yet but have needed to for a good month now. As for a laptop, I have an old balled mouse in the bag with it.

Ooo, Shanna and WyKnott have arrived! I hit TWoP by accident when coming here just now; I think WyKnott somewhere had linked to the archive as well. I think I'm similar to Shanna there when it's time for change, or even when there's a decision to be made; it's hard at first, but once I make and accept it, it's easy to embrace and I admit I am impatient being held back to the "old" at that point as well. Megs, good luck on the job hunt - I have been a bit lax in mine, combination of still getting cross-contaminated with gluten, trying to lose more weight/get in better shape, and helping Med with his business as well. That and, I know once I start I'll have a tendency to volunteer for overtime just to save up money. And I agree with Kaffyr, you have the skills and creativity that you'll do well. My main problem here for jobs is that one major employer for nursing has drastically downsized after reorganizing twice while the other has picked up the experienced talent that the other company dropped. I've considered working on a health blog, but every time I sit down to work on it... let's just say that it's not as interesting as other things. Also, completely off topic aside from the ability to edit large chunks of text in a dialogue box: I really need to get the courage to and clean it finally; you don't realize how much you select en masse with it until it starts dropping mid-drag.

*waves* This still has the new-forum smell to it ;) But, count me in to the group sitting there waiting for the "Forum is now archived" page at the old country. Then we had storms all day today, but still just looked at the screen here and there. Even though we're mostly the same people, it's still different. Feels like we forgot to pack something from over there, but again, we didn't. Now, where to put the toaster...

It's always fun getting new fans hooked on the show, even if they don't know they're new fans yet. My fiance didn't know what to get me for my birthday last year, which was close to the date of the 50th anniversary special. Guess who was forced to watch it with me [a few times]? He didn't get it at first, but I still consider it a major victory that he even watched an episode (he's not a fan of the camp low-budget humor strewn throughout the show). Made what is probably my final post over at our old home, and ended up putting on the two episodes that were David Tennant's last official ones. I know they announced season 8 starting in August, but do we have a date yet? It would be awesome to arrange a New-Who rewatch leading up to it both to "open" PTV and "close" TWoP, and to kick off Peter Capaldi's reign. At least the recaps will still be up, but it's just rough seeing the old community close.

Doctor Who is definitely one of my top favorite shows also, it tends to bring out something good in you that if not forgotten, was at least hidden away. For Season 1 episodes, I also recommend Rose, though if you don't have time to watch all of it (it grows on you, but not all episodes are needed to understand the full show), probably S01E07 (The Long Game) sets the stage for the Jack Harkness and Nine's final arc (so episodes 9, 10, 12, 13). How much time do you have to watch?

See, I fully admit that I like/love US pudding - but to me, custard (and this is probably why I was asking) is like pudding but thickened further with eggs that can be later used for a decent pie filling or to freeze for a fuller ice cream as frozen custard. But UK pudding to me, I think of Christmas Pudding which makes me think of our fruitcake (which I admit I also have a like/love relationship with). What I saw in the episode with the fish fingers and custard made me think of slightly thicker Jello Vanilla Pudding.

Ooo thank you for starting this, it was another favorite thread back in the olde country. *winks* And amazed to see that food is already being discussed. It is because of a thread like this that I became hooked on Nutella and lemon curd (thankfully not together), realized baked beans were way too sweet in the US to put on toast, and discovered that I don't necessarily care for the saltiness of Vegemite (which looking back now, I don't think I can even eat). I have two questions, pick either one: Speaking of custard - is it true in the UK you can actually buy it premade like they showed in the show? Also, how does one explain salt water taffy to someone in the UK? I was chatting with a friend from there about a year ago - I tried to explain it to her best I could, but I don't think she got past the idea of "salt water" being in the name.

Me the host? If so, it's only because Chip and Lisin were grateful enough to let me do so - it's still Glark's, Wing Chun's, and SARS' house from what I can tell. Even then, Megs/Ms.Sherlock (still getting used to your name change) already started the redecorating when I arrived; to which I like it. Beer fridge? Sure! As long as there's some GF hard cider in there and/or some wine. BizBuzz, I hope you or someone else made that UK/US Translations thread - it was another favorite of mine when I'd mainline the other forum during the day and night (sorry, writing bad fanfic lately that deals with addiction). LTL, I was thinking the exact same thing! Mrs.Sherlock, I adore Top Gear as well as any action movie, so I would probably adore it! Nam, that sounds like a fun exerience though - reminds me of some of the "rides" at Disney World where they spray you, blow on you, and have things hovering over you in 3D as well. It's not necessary, but it makes it a fun experience! And heatherbelle! *waves*

I blame the existential crisis on the other site ending it's editorial coverage (as I've been having a little one too which has sparked posting again as well as writing), though I hear the cure is to vigorously post over here at PTV. *winks* How was the movie though? I assume that the powers that be over here do not want us to fully spoil it though.

Hello Mack and Monkeypants, and a pleasure to meet you TooMuchCoffee and Bizbuzz! I am sure that once more news of DW starts filtering out we will start to see this more active. Trying to stay active here a bit too while people make their way over from TWoP, though for similar reasons I'll probably end up lurking too, though I've been playing the last week again with some fanfic ideas. Perhaps we can start a Fan art/fic/video thread or something for recommendations.
