  1. Did Donna actually have sex with Noah? I mean, I don't why I care but considering they kept Saint Donna a virgin for 217 years before finally "giving in" (barf) to David, are they then continuing the misogynistic melodrama by having her sleep with every new BF because, clearly, once someone has sex once they're now damaged goods obligated to put out on the reg (double barf).

Did anyone watch Marvel's Runaways? I really liked the first season, but when Gert and Chase hook up (granted, in a moment when they thought the world was about to end), I was shocked when they maybe had sex immediately? I mean, this is a semi-nerdy high school kid making first contact with her long-time crush, and what, they fuck? Still shaking my head at that one.

SO excited for this episode as soon as I saw the guest was Shade Court's The Honorable Kara Brown! Well done with the Canon submission!

Did everyone else already know Andy Griffith had such a bad temper? (And also maybe didn't learn lessons? Maybe stop punching the wall after the FIRST time you break your hand?) He always played such mild-mannered characters.

You need to watch "A Face in the Crowd." A uncomfortably prescient take on how TV would enable grossly unqualified demagogues to become political forces. Griffith is really good at being really bad.

LOVE that movie! Haven't thought about it in years, but you're right on about the uncomfortable modern echoes.

  3. Not sure if I commented here or only in my head, but back when Kelly chose herself, I could have sworn she was walking on the beach, and was confused why I was so off on the visual. But here she is, choosing herself again, on the beach. And since I had stopped watching this train wreck long before this point, I hereby forgive myself for conflating the two episodes.

  4. FWIW, I sobbed through the Better Things clips, just like I did the first time I watched it. Tara, I think you were victim to a poorly-timed gender imbalance on your panel.

  5. "They set up an interesting contrast in the commander's behavior toward his wife vs. Offred. He shuts Serena Joy down entirely when she tries to talk politics, but he seems happy to engage Offred (at least a little) when she asks about his trip. Why? Because he wants her admiration? Because he feels sorry for her? Because he's sick of his wife?"

(Sorry, don't know how to quote properly.)

I never picked this up from the novel, but I think this episode floated an answer to the Scrabble mystery. As Offred says, he wants to connect. Of course, her participation in his evening charade was motivated self-preservation, but it seemed less directly to stay in his good graces, in general, and more to spark and fan his interest, so he'd be more attracted to her, so he'd get an erection at the Ceremony, so maybe she'd become pregnant, so she wouldn't suffer the fate of a twice-failed Handmaid.

  6. I loved Dave's hints and also really appreciated Sandra Oh, especially when he muttered under his breath, "Oh, is it?" Gold.

And I thought every American girl of the 80s read and loved Anne of Green Gables. What else were we going to do after Little House?

  7. Another fan of Socialist Tara here! I especially appreciate the A Closer Look posts and watch them religiously. Easier to find through you than directly through YouTube, so thank you. I am your people!

  8. I'm Jewish and my husband is not, so we have both Christmas and Hanukkah. And I was pretty uncomfortable with the trappings of Christmas at first. My husband is not religious at all, so it's not like I was worried about too much Jesus, but when you grow up without Christmas all the aggressive Santa stuff can be, well, a lot. Still, I understood what I was signing up for, and I would never take Christmas away from my husband's family. And if my kids are going to celebrate Christmas, why the hell would I ruin it for them?

Tldr: I sucked it up and learned to embrace Christmas. Grow the fuck up, Andrea.
