Finished Forest House was nice but we never saw the two other bedrooms.  They were quite small so I imagine one became an office.

I don't think we saw the renovated upstairs hallway they all liked during the initial walk through either.

The front door looked way more pink with the green than it had when Keith was painting. The cabinets weren't as bad but there was still enough of a pink hue that I would have wanted to repaint. Especially with the wood handles.

The listing for the Balmoral house. It looks like they've had some trouble selling it.

They've  painted a brick house before, and I don't like it either.

For at least one of the painted brick houses, they explained their reasoning (something about it had already been painted and they couldn't clean it up with their budget, I think?) so I was disappointed they didn't this time. Especially with the extra decorative touches (the mosaic-like patterns in the front peaks) they lost.

  3. I can't find the listing for this one on Shea's realtor.com page, unfortunately.

I wish they'd shown some discussion on why they decided to paint the brick. I couldn't see anything wrong with it during the episode and the color covered up some really nice design details. I also wondered why they didn't take out the wall between the dining room and kitchen (although that was probably cost). They talked about how big the dining room was during the walk through and I didn't feel like the kitchen seemed any bigger after the remodel (just looking at it gave me claustrophobia. There's no way more than one person could work in there).

I liked what Keith did to the fireplace but think the leather chairs were a mistake. They were too big for the corners and made the room seem crowded.

I also hated the chessboard bathroom.

The green tile in the upstairs bath was lovely though and I think Shea was right to push for getting rid of one of the bedrooms on the second floor.

Which leads me to the yards! The bare ground is offputting. I get that it's winter,  but address the moonscape issue with a few pots of flowers oe mulch artfully set next to the house

They showed some landscaping! The flowers and mulch along the front of the house looked really nice.

I think the editors (or whoever) need to pay more attention to how Keith and Evan come across sometimes. To me, Evan seemed very 'adult dealing with irresponsible kid' this week with the mirror breaking (I know the teasing was supposed to be lighthearted but it was a bit too much for me) and ice cream cart.

Apparently, I didn't enjoy this episode as much as others. 🙁

My husband and I started using closed captioning a lot.  We are retired.  I recently realized we don't use it when streaming older programs (from before about 2000).  Upon further investigation, I've noticed newer shows (and movies) have much louder music and background noise, often drowning out dialog.  I don't know why.  Once noticed it has become very irritating.

It's not in your head. I read an article somewhere investigating why this is and the conclusion was that no one has the budget or time to do better. Older shows had people controlling the sound levels on set and in the editing booth and would call actors in to re-do their lines if necessary. Modern production no longer allows for that kind of thing.

Also, I am not sure what knowing the name of the scent would have done to help them find the perp. It turned out it DID help them-- because it was tied to a location. But if it had just been some aftershave or somesuch, how does knowing its name help them find the guy? Can they put out a bulletin saying "the suspect smells like XX brand?" Would the search team know what that smells like?

I'm not sure the actual members of law enforcement were expecting much (Will seemed a little dismissive) but I think MPG's character latched on to identifying the scent as something he could do instead of just stand around worrying. He pretends he doesn't care about Angie and Will but it's obvious he does, his obsession with what Betty smelled like could have just been one more sign of that (also, I loved the scene when Betty kept climbing into his lap despite being removed (gently!) every time).

I hope that Angie is alright, the killer went to town on her back, she's already got so much going on she doesn't need permanent damage that could get her off active duty.

I agree. I also hope we don't get an "addicted to pain killers" story line for her.

IIRC, they mentioned that after the events of the first episode that there'd been a feature article on Will which mentioned him having been found in a trashcan.  James must have seen it and realised that Will had survived.

On 5/3/2023 at 1:27 AM, possibilities said:

And why was he having all the kids from the foster home tracked? I didn't understand that. I understood he wanted to hurt Will. And Angie was a way to hurt Will. But why was he having Percival track all of them? He didn't need any help finding Will and Angie, they worked for the Dept and he knew that. So that whole business with Percival and Paul and the children's home last week seemed like it didn't add up based on this week's resolution.

The picture James left for Will in the group home in the gift box was from the article they'd shown earlier so he had definitely read it. And someone mentioned the journalist has included the "Trashcan" story so it wouldn't have been hard for James to put the pieces together (especially if Will looks like his mother as Amanda claimed).

As for James' motive for the new killings, I think he wanted to torture the person he blamed for Lucy's death by making Will wonder what was going on and worry about his friends and the kids he'd grown up with. He used Percy to do legwork verifying identities but also as a red herring. The final step in James' plan was to make Will watch him kill Angie so he could feel what James felt when Lucy died (James was definitely not sane).

I can't believe that Social Services would rather see a child in foster care system (which they would have to pay) or in a children's home than with a single person.  What stupidity.

Faith's mom (I am horrible with names) told Will that Social Services had assured Amanda that they had an adoption by a great family all lined up but that something must have fallen through. We don't know what happened there (and may never know).

I like that Keith is doing something besides getting a toy for Beau.

I do too but I'm not sure how thrilled someone at any age would be to get 18 portraits of themselves. Maybe if they're small and include his parents?

The listing for the Future House is here. I wasn't sure about the console (other than the air freshener, there wasn't anything else included that I need) (I also hated the dining room light) but I loved the rest of the sustainable touches. Evan was right about painting the cabinets. They looked fabulous and I'd be thrilled to put any of the tile in my house somewhere. Does the show list sponsors/suppliers anywhere? They kept mentioning that going with recycled didn't cost any more but I feel like stuff like that can be difficult to source sometimes.

I'm guessing the blue quilt in the first bedroom was made using scraps? It didn't fit the rest of the house at all and looked a little amateurish, if that makes sense.

Little things that would drive me crazy: the handles on the cabinets/drawers were all horizontal, with some off-center (so you'd know which way it opened) and the spice plant rack in the kitchen looked cheap and the plants hadn't been re-potted.

But I overall loved what they did and restoring the floor plan and the arch on the porch was the right way to go.

No doubt that island and black hole are responsible for the price drop.

If I were making an offer, I'd be tempted to put "remove tiles from wall in living room and patch/paint" in the contract (I'm guessing they'd be less willing to negotiate on the counters).

  8. I'm assuming it wasn't feasible to use the space over the basement stairs to add steps but I wish they had at least mentioned the option. My house (built in 1930) has the 2 steps of stairs on top of each other so getting to the second floor doesn't take any additional space. I'm also very curious about the plans of whoever framed a room upstairs (if that's really what Keith found).

I really liked the tile in the bathroom (and that they used a white version in the kitchen) but I hated the painting Keith hung there. And the tiles in the living room which would be much more difficult to remove. I think this theme would have been perfect for Evan's photography skills.

The counters weren't worth the work and cost. They didn't look all that great (there's an obvious seam at the waterfall turn). The size of the counter between the kitchen and living room was fantastic though.

I just spent an unreasonable time on zillow trying to track down BB houses. Someone has removed all pictures and information for the entire Fitzgerald neighborhood where they're working. I did finally find an address which lead me to realtor.com where there are actual listings for Shea. Here is the physics house. It looks like they skip Evan's purchase in the Property History (it goes from sold for $75,000 in 2006 to listed for $125,000 in May this year). They've dropped the price a few times to $107,500 and the page says pending.

    Other listings:

    • Cozy cabin (listed in March for $135k, sold in May for $140k)
    • Temple house (listed in March for $119,900, sold in June for $117k)
    • Disco house (listed in March for $115k, sold in March for $115k)

I noticed the place next door, but maybe that one was too far gone, and the city is going to take it down?

I watched the last 2 episodes together and was surprised no one mentioned how the leaning house would affect the property values of the Detroit house. They'd just discussed how great it was for their pricing and ability to sell quickly to do 2 houses next to each other. I would definitely want something in writing guaranteeing the removal of the house next door before handing over that much money.

Evan's photographs were gorgeous and should be used in more houses.

I didn't really understand the water pipe issue. If a person already can't pay their bill, it makes no sense (to me) to cut the pipe, requiring the home owner to invest even more money for repairs before getting the water turned back on once they have an income.

The pine cone "art" annoyed me too and I wondered why they included that footage. Did they think it was cute? It wasn't (to me) and I kept thinking they could have used that time to talk about the difficulties of buying a home in Detroit (I'm never going to stop asking for this).

I love that, in addition to adopting Detroit as home, they're also apparently exploring the rest of the state. Protar's house on Beaver Island is probably not super high on even a Michigander's to visit list but they made the trip at some point and enjoyed it.

I loved that Jaime graduated from Gotham University (the sweatshirt he was wearing when he talked to his dad on their lawn). I hope he got some great (Wayne) scholarships. I can't imagine going from the home we saw to Gotham City.

I went this afternoon and really enjoyed this. The family stuff was amazing. I loved all of them and hope we get more. However, I was really angry about

    Spoiler

the dad's death. Not every superhero origin story has to involve losing a parent! He's still alive in the comics.

One thing I wasn't expecting from a super hero movie was how awesome and 3 dimensional all of the women were (except Victoria who was just evil). Aging up Milagro (she's a lot younger than Jaime in the comics) was the right call. The sibling relationship and the support they gave each other was fantastic. Nana was the best, obviously. And Jenny was a whole person, not just a love interest.

One nitpick for now - the homemade headboard had fabric with lines that were not straight.  The OCD in me had me jumpy looking at it.

I'm with you on that. I liked the headboard otherwise (although I think I'd have preferred it to go all the way to the floor) but would have had to replace that fabric the day I moved in.

This is the neighborhood this episode's house is in. I couldn't find it on zillow looking at recently sold and for sale (3 bed, 2 bath, $100k-$200k).

I really like their ideas about the floor plan, and the first floor main suite.

I loved the finished design but I think I'd miss having a bathroom on the main floor for guests/kids to use. You'd either have to be ok with people going through your bedroom and sharing the main bathroom or sending everyone upstairs.

I liked that they used clips from previous episodes to really show the passing of time. Plus, Beau of course.

I know nothing about being a real estate agent but I feel bad for Shea that she apparently has to go right back to work. I hope she and her husband were able to take some maternity/paternity leave that we're not seeing.

I loved all of the easter eggs in this one, I spotted Doctor Fate's helmet, a Green Lantern batter, the Cosmic Rod, among other things!

Me too! I can't remember, were they from one particular universe? Or had they been collected from all over? I was worried about how Courtney lost the rod (although I guess this would be too early for her to own it).

I especially loved the one alternate Jimmy the Lois's had with them and that she was so excited to meet our version. And then, of course, she helped them all escape.

I feel like the sooner Lois finds out the truth, the less right she has to be mad at him.

I agree. Especially since Clark doesn't have answers to most of her questions in this version of his story. All of the "I don't knows" Lois got during her interview were true. Jimmy has way more of a right to be angry here (I loved that he's known it all along. Of course he figured it out. Clark is awful at keeping secrets. I really hope we get an episode of the other two training him).

I softened a bit towards Lois after she asked if Clark was lying about his feelings for her, however. I can understand things getting a bit tangled in her head like that. Hopefully, she has the anger/feelings of betrayal out of her system and we can move on to more fun stuff.

  17. There’s So Much To Love About ‘My Adventures With Superman’s New Take on Lois Lane

I thought this paragraph would be of particular interest here:

    Quote

While many fans originally only speculated about Lois’ ethnicity in the series (despite her voice actor Alice Lee’s Korean-American heritage) Lois Lane was confirmed to be Korean American herself during episode four (and on Twitter). Lois is pictured wearing a top that resembles a Hanbok, which is a piece of Korean formalwear.

I thought it was odd that Tasha Smith's character was missing from the middle two episodes. It's like she had that conversation with her therapist about sleeping with women and then nothing until she's flirting with the doctor.

I agree. When she had her apparent realization in therapy, I was excited to see where the story line would go. So I was disappointed they just skipped right over everything. I wonder if the actress wasn't available or they had to cut scenes? After they'd given the guy friend so much screen time to deal with wanting to be a one woman guy, I was expecting more.

Is it better for these neighborhoods to sit empty??

From what I've read elsewhere, the problem is profit (of course). A bank would rather spend their time on a loan for a more expensive house/condo/whatever than on a $100K sale where they're not going to make much money (plus, I'm sure there's some racism there too).

There was a woman in season one who basically had the house designed for her and had to jump through a ton of hoops to close. And she worked at a bank so she would, presumably, have known who to talk to and what steps to take. I can't imagine what the process is like for someone completely unfamiliar.

Detroit needs more people like the ones working at the credit union in the article, willing to take the time on small stuff and helping their borrowers understand what's going on. I'm really glad Keith and Evan seem to be doing something to help beyond just improving the houses.

I agree. That's one of the reasons I'm so frustrated that Bargain Block doesn't discuss any of the issues their buyers face (although maybe the partnership with the credit union will come up in season 3?). I'm not sure what the timing is between filming, airing, and finalizing a sale so including follow up may not be possible but they could maybe do a recap show about the previous season.

  22. Some behind the scenes info on the problems the buyers face with financing. Again (I feel like a broken record, sorry), I really wish stuff like this would get discussed more on the show. It's a part of the story they're telling. Just fixing up the houses and seeing them at affordable prices isn't going to help if the rest of the system is stopping people from closing. I'm glad they recognized the issue and are doing something to help by partnering with the credit union. And I hope we get to see some of that whenever season 3 starts.

  23. I just finished season 1 (auto-play is so dangerous) and really enjoyed it. I loved Mavis and all of her people and really liked that, even though she's obviously the star/lead, the other characters all had their own story lines and character arcs (I thought Marley's realization could have used more time though).

The only character I would have cut is the roommate who was pointlessly annoying (although the adorable white kitten could have been in every scene and I'd have been happy).
