  1. Talk about an ironic appropriation of a title. Robert A. Heinlein’s most famous novel, published in 1960, was Also titled Stranger In A Strange Land, about the first human child born on Mars of two members of the first human mission to land on Mars.

Another fine episode. Egerton did a masterful job as Jimmy receiving Larry's horrible story, and Larry's session with the psychiatrist was also very well done.

The discovery of the bicycle was stunning. After four years of agonized searching for clues, there it was.

The reaction of the federal prosecutor to the detective work on the bicycle was surprising, while it might not have directly supported a murder or kidnapping charge, it could have supported a charge that would prevent Larry from being released immediately if his appeal was successful.

And Jimmy’s reaction in private to what Larry had told him was masterful acting by Taron.

Binged the first three as they were available when I stumbled upon the recommendation and am about to watch episode #4. Seems about to dig into the upbringing(s) of Jimmy and Larry, so gonna get creepy I guess. Really liking the slow tempo and, of course, the amazing Paul Walter Hauser. If you have looked up the real-life Larry, the resemblance is uncanny as well. The show is doing a good job of making me hate the crooked prison guard as well.

While I've liked Mogwai for many years now, I feel the soundtrack is not always bringing the right mood and is sometimes way too loud, as if it was a main character. That could be a good thing, but in this instance it isn't for

I don’t know where you are, but Apple only posted the third episode in the US overnight (late Thursday evening), so I just watched it overnight myself. Episode 4 is next weekend.

  4. CBS has moved away from summer drama shows would be my first guess. And Seal Team has apparently done well enough on Paramount +. It didn’t help things for the show that the global pandemic came along when it did as the approach CBS took was quite similar to what they did with The Amazing Race’s first season in 2001 post 9/11. The mindset was that viewers wouldn’t want to watch an globe trotting show when something was affecting the entire globe. and as a reminder season 33 of TAR was disrupted in production as well.

Three terms? Don't they have a term limit? Why not? That was established before our timeline and the FAM timeline split. Did I miss something?

Sorry, typo. Tapping posts on an iPad that chooses to change what you tap is very frustrating. Fixed.

I don't recall how JFK and RFK fared in this alternate reality but it seems to me both Hart and Clinton sort of positioned themselves as the heir to the Kennedy throne but without the baggage associated with the name. They both had that JFK swagger to some extent, IMO. But unless the alternate reality versions of Hart or Clinton painted themselves differently, it seemed to me Hart would've eliminated the basis for Clinton's run after two terms in office. Gore would've made more sense to me.

Unless Ellen gets publicly outed I suspect she's going to win the election.

I went back and checked. As in the RL timeline, Nixon is elected president in 1968, but the failure of the US to land on the Moon catapults Ted Kennedy (avoiding Chappaquiddick from happening) into position to defeat Nixon in 1972 (Thus, no Watergate scandal, either.) in 1976, Ronald Reagan defeats Ted Kennedy in his bid for re-election. The FAM timeline doesn’t mention Robert Kennedy at all.

If alternate reality Gary Hart won two POTUS terms it's doubtful to me there would've been a Bill Clinton. Hart must've loved watching this.

Not a fan of "aged" Joel Kinneman. The actress playing his wife was a funny surprise. She has a recurring role on The Bold and the Beautiful where she plays a relatively staid doctor and the opposite of a party animal.

So is Molly fully blind now? She's got a seeing eye dog now who appears to be of the same gruff temperament as she.

This show is still on point with the women's wardrobes. I recognized Margo's vintage Etienne Aigner shoulder bag right away.

Someone should've snatched the mic away from Danny's brother Jimmy. What a pointlessly miserable wedding toast.

That first dance song! OMG, Danny! A bit of a gut punch for Karen, lol. And the poor bride likely had no clue of the song's significance to her new husband.

Wow, what a cascade of failure. Were there no redundancies or failsafes built in at all? Over on reddit they've been calling Polaris the space Motel 6.

So now Danny will be the new hero and Karen will owe him big time. Gee, wonder how he might want to collect on the debt? 😏

Now this is how you open a third season. Ditto comments upthread, I thought sure they were getting ready to wipe out a chunk of the cast like FAM's version of the Red Wedding.

In the FAM timeline, Hart serves two terms ending in 1992, which is when Clinton is running in the RL timeline and the FAM timeline. Reagan serves beginning in 1976 to 1984 (Carter was a Senator from Georgia, per season two). So George HW Bush never reaches the presidency and isn’t there to react to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Meanwhile, the earlier promotion of electric cars and the use of fusion power, cuts US dependence on petroleum.

It does seem that Polaris, as a private enterprise totally went for the cost savings to avoid redundant or backup systems. Not clear if their astronauts were trained as well as the NASA and the ESA astronauts, but it’s clear Danny followed his parents (and Ed) into the NASA program. Which should explain why Ed gave him the green light to go fix the valve before everything failed. Whether “Don’t Be Cruel” has a deeper meaning than being a call back to Karen and Danny in season 2, we’ll have to wait and see.

I suspect we haven’t heard the last about North Korea and the harm their failed launches have had in earth orbit, including the Polaris.

Have no idea whether Margo has a CIA contact inher dealings with Sergi, as he has with the KGB. Wouldn’t surprise me if Putin is in there somewhere.

  8. There’s also extra features on the FAM website about major developments in the FAM timeline against the real timeline we were in. What was fusion power, is cold fusion using an isotope that in the FAM world is more plentiful on the Moon.

Vehicles were in transition from gas to electric power.

And production did give Danny a real set up in this episode to be Ed’s successor as the go to. He apparently graduated from Annapolisand entered the astronaut program. So in coming to the rescue, he knew what he was doing.

  9. There was only the one line, but it was appropriate to hear a reference to the war in Ukraine.

The fact  that the defector was doing so because of the war was at least timely.

Even if Tank isn’t otherwise involved with the episode, he should always be in the last scene. You know, like the Reagan Sunday dinner.

  10. What helped make this show work was the lengthy development time it had with Clark/Superman on the last two Arrowverse crossovers and on Supergirl, both for Tyler and Bistie. Once the show runners got that right the other pieces, and the mining of the numerous variations of the Superman story in the comics over the years, often in unexpected and creative ways (as was the case with Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, and still is the case with The Flash/Barry Allen, plus the decision to film in a motion picture aspect ratio.

Another example of the benefits of a long development process is having Captain Christopher Pike, Una, and Spock on a full season of Star Trek: Discovery before fan support green lit Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,

It does say something that fan reaction made a difference because the chemistry between the actors, and the show and it’s viewers make a difference.

  11. Couple of comments that I guess are continuity related. In TOS, the timeline of history has  all three wars mentioned in this episode. The Eugenics War was all Khan in the 1990s. It’s hard to square that with the timeline of Picard season 2, which postulates no second civil war, Eugenics War or World War III prior to the Q altered timeline of that just concluded sea.son. IIRC, there was some publicity introducing La’an as a descendant of Khan, whether direct or collateral isn’t clear. Khan had a son in TOS, but that was from his people held in statis, and not one who remained on post Eugenics War Earth. But the hyphenated last name was a clear indication of La’an being related in some way.

The use of images from the events of 1/6 was merely symbolic; I don’t take it as being canon in the SNW/TOS/TNG timeline.

If you didn’t watch season 2 of Discovery, I’d suggest you do so. It gives a much better feel of how Pike, Una, and younger Spockwere portrayed to begin which. It also gives a better insight about the internal conflict younger Spock had between his Vulcan and human halves  while reconciling the more emotional side of Spock we saw in The Cage, being the original TOS pilot.

  12. A few things you might have missed.

Joe telling Danny and Jamie that there’s three Reagans there to help defuse the bomb on the teenaged girl, not two. Thus, Joe fully acknowledges that he is a full throated Reagan, and when Jamie earlier wanted to find that teenager for the mom, Joe pointed out that Jamie needed a detective. And earlier in that scene, Joe and Jamie noting they’ve got to quit meeting “like this”.

Joe at the final family dinner of the season, just being a Reagan, and it’s not about him. It’s pretty clear Joe and Jamie have a good working relationship and not just as nephew and uncle.

The writers are making some sort of point about Erin being the only non-cop at the dinner table. To be fair, Jamie did have a law degree IIRC when he decided at the beginning of the series to go to the police academy after Joe, Sr. died. Which made the discussion between Joe and Jamie wondering about how things might have been different if Joe Hill’s mom had told Joe Reagan about the younger Joe; but then realizing that older Joe might have done things differently, and Joe Hill would have been acknowledged as a Reagan much earlier.  The writers finally wrote themselves out of a box about Joe Hill accepting that he’s a Reagan, no matter what, and would have been. Maybe now they can move on to Joe Hill’s skill set as a detective like his Uncle Danny.

  13. There are laws that make the server liable for serving an intoxicating substance. “Most U.S. states have enacted a dram shop law on one kind or another, and New York is no exception. If you were injured through the wrongful behavior of another person, you are entitled to assert a personal injury claim against that person.” I suspect the girlfriend of Jamie’s law school classmate could be sued due to the consequences of her conduct, even if not a criminal consequence. That’s the part that was missing from the episode that would have made some sense, rather than give the impression she got away with it.

Does anybody know if the FBI shows are being renewed there!? As really CBS would be not so bright not to renew them.

As really someone on another site thinks that the woman teaching Scott Hungarian may be suspicious. Though I have had a love-hate relationship with Scott!

CBS only renewed Blue Bloods yesterday, but the press release said more renewal announcements are forthcoming. Drip, drip, drip.

  15. The premise was explained in the episode, quite clearly, in fact. The partnership agreement provided that if either couple quit the winery, the other couple would take sole control, with all the accumulated value staying with the couple that remained, the other couple would be entitled to get back only their original investment. The motive was crated when the value of the winery had already increased ten-fold, IIRC. At least this episode they moved away from a workplace romance, But Tank should have been there to greet them on their return from France.

  16. It’s definitely a writers’ room issue. I haven’t particularly noticed if the production staff includes any former FBI agents as consultants because some of the storylines are short on credibility. But then, FBI International is the second most watched new series, whose ratings are just a crumb behind NCIS:Hawai’i and that has already been renewed by CBS/Paramount. It’s an issue that could be fixed for next season.

  17. Alexander Dreymon posted a one minute video on his social media this weekend that filming has been completed on the final movie in the Last Kingdom series. He was about to go into his trailer to remove his armor for the very last time. The role of Uthred had lasted for eight years. And no word yet on when “Seven Kings Must Die” will be aired/streamed.
