The thing about the set up is (I think) that it is supposed to be similar to the NCAA basketball tournament.  The basketball one is all about seeding and brackets.   I agree that a shake up is needed--it's got to be disheartening to go up against the the same chef that took you out for 3 or 4 years in a row and lose again.  It's also got to be hard for people like KBC and Christa to go out in the first round every year.  Maybe they should change it to if you win, then you don't come back.

I don't know what the answer is, but Guy/Food Network, please come up with something!

I think they could keep the bracket structure while dropping the strict East/West split. The NCAA bracket has geographic regions, but where your school is located doesn't automatically determine which region you're in.

  2. Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with Lukas deciding he doesn't want to keep going with Emilia, but since he seemed to have decided that before the wedding I wish he had dumped her earlier. I'm sure there's some producer encouragement to do it at the altar, but it's definitely one of the least appealing parts of the show for me.

Ray looked so familiar. Was he on one of the previous Baking Championship shows? I know I've seen him before, and that show is the one I watch most regularly.

I remember him from Halloween Baking Championship, I think.

In light of all the comments about how glad people are to see John (and Carla?) back, and how good it is to have the show back in its regular form, I thought it was worth mentioning that this is the same line-up and format as last year. 2020 was the off year, with COVID requiring Carla to be host in place of John and doing double duty as judge with Zac and Stephanie (that was Stephanie's first year). Last year, John was back as host and Carla, Zac and Stephanie were judges - it was the Camp Serial Killer theme, where eliminated contestants had to put on a raincoat and go out in the "woods".

I think people are comparing it to the lineup from Spring (although I think that host lineup has always been more variable than the Halloween shows, especially recently).

Watched the episode.  The guy did really well.  He did have a passing resemblance to Jussie Smollett which I found distracting.

Question on the strategy... there are bound to be some categories that the contestant is really weak in.  I'm curious if people think it is better to get those categories out of the way early, knowing that these are big hits and there will be only three or four words required but risking the chance that they could get eliminated early.  Or save for the end and just hope to get as much money as possible, while knowing that lack of knowledge in that category is likely going to cost them the chance at $1MM.

I was also wondering if it might be better to pick those categories when you only have to do a couple words.

Interesting. I actually prefer desserts that are not too sweet. I think it is the German in me. My dad was the same way. I always assumed that French desserts were sweeter in general but maybe not.

My guess is that American desserts are just another level of magnitude sweeter, even if there is variation within other countries' baking traditions.

Did the show ever tell us where they were flying to for nationals? I’m assuming the Pacific Northwest going by the terrain.

It’s also a bit odd that we haven’t seen any of the girls’ parents in the present day, since most would still be living. I wouldn’t mind getting a “how the town reacted to the crash at the time” perspective. The girls would have likely been on Dateline or Oprah upon their rescue- “missing white woman syndrome” times 10.

Seattle. I believe the pilot said they went further north to avoid a storm somewhere on the way and they crashed in Canada (show descriptions say Ontario but the terrain looks more like the Canadian Rockies).

So Taissa was paying for Nat's rehab, meaning Nat may not be as rich as we thought? And who was the blonde woman Taissa was looking at on her computer? She seems totally committed to her wife, so I don't think it's anything like cheating.

I've forgotten what point in the episode this was, but I assumed it was another survivor she was checking up on (or maybe the daughter of the rival political candidate?). I may have missed something though.

On what planet are sauerkraut and black garlic equivalent to rosemary and gelatin in terms of difficulty? Honestly. That made me so angry. Admittedly all the baking shows I watch eventually run together but I feel like Guillermo used gelatin in a panna cotta. Melt down the flavored gelatin treat and bam, panna cotta.

Also, on no baking show I've ever watched have they criticized macarons for not being day old. All the macarons I've ever made I've eaten at least one the same day I made them.  It's never even been said in the recipes I've used that they have to rest overnight.  It was not some horrifying situation. I was floored by Stephanie's issue with Megan's macarons not resting or whatever overnight. She did say towards the end that they were overcooked, which maybe they were, but her initial complaints were all about how they were supposed to "rest" overnight and that's why they wouldn't work.

Yeah, that was weird to me. I’ve seen a ton of macarons made on the various baking championships and I don’t remember this criticism ever coming up before.

I hate when any show brings back a former contestant. They had their chance, so move on! I’m sure Renee is a very nice person and she is a great baker, but I don’t want her to win.

They reaired last season sometime last week and I had forgotten Renee made it to the final three. I understand even less why they brought her back now, it's not like she was cut too soon to show her stuff last time.

It seems to me that the women's teams still carry their big recognisable names on their Olympics squad (Lloyd, Ertz, Morgan, Rapinoe etc for the US, Buchanan for Canada).  But the men's field doesn't seem to have any name names?  Granted, I am a "major tournament" only kind of soccer fan, but I don't recognise any of the names.  Belgium, Italy, Netherlands and Great Britain / UK didn't even bother to enter a team.  None of the big stars for France, Spain or Germany are there.  Are they just tired from the Euros or is the Olympics not considered prestigious in men's soccer?

Olympic men's soccer is usually under-23 (I think under-24 this year because of being pushed back), with a few older players allowed. No age restrictions for Olympic women's soccer.

  12. It sounds like it might be on the docket in future Olympics if the host country already has stadiums, but not if it would require them to build baseball/softball stadiums they would never use.

Starting with the episode where Kate is shown in the basement with Martin drugging her, they have shown the RAINN ad at the conclusion of the ep. And then in the episode with Jamie punching Jeanette (I think) and this one they've show the domestic violence ad at the end, presumably because of the punching happening/being discussed.

I think they also showed the punch in the "previously on," so that may have been another contributing factor to the domestic violence warning at the beginning.

I think leaking to the press is a different story than having something on purpose and that saving a so-called piece of evidence to whip out at a crucial “a-ha” moment in court may be a thing of TV and movies. Either way, I’m not any kind of authority on this kind of thing, but —and like someone pointed out, this may not even apply here—one side is supposed to share certain types of evidence with the other.

I'm not a lawyer but I also don't think real cases go to trial as often as they do on tv, so maybe having the chat is the kind of thing that might make the other side more willing to settle out of court? It's TV so they probably want a dramatic courtroom scene though.

Honestly, I enjoyed it too.  But the problem is they won’t know if there are cases as a result until 7-10 days later, and whether the public knows or not will depend on how well known the person(s) who got the virus are, whether they are looking to publicize it, and whether or not media is pursuing the story.  What if 12 unknown staffers/hotel workers/lower level skaters/lesser known coaches come down with it at various levels of intensity?  Probably we’ll never know, and there will always be questions about where exactly they got it.  But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a spreader event.  It’s just very hard to identify those.  And then harder to publicize that they have happened.  And then harder still to get the public to understand that they’re happening all the time.  Sigh.

So IMO they really shouldn’t have held it.  But I blame Sweden for allowing it.  Australia and the city of Melbourne were very, VERY strict about what was going to be allowed in order to field the Australian tennis Open.  That’s their job.  IMO Sweden and Stockholm should have refused to have the championships unless the ISU abided by far stricter restrictions than it did.

I suppose this isn't too surprising given how Sweden has handled the pandemic so far.

Wait, isn't Charles actually FP's son, not Hal's? So he wouldn't have any Cooper genes.

Also, was Penelope in the men's prison? I guess I shouldn't be surprised at that given everything that happens on this show

And apparently Hal didn’t even have the serial killer version of the genes?

Honestly I couldn't confirm if that's the title. They all run together in my mind.  That includes the plots too of course lol.

I know the generic titles is a common complaint, but it always gets me that "12 Gifts of Christmas" is not "My Christmas Love" (possibly the most generic of all the titles?).
