I have a different view - I suspect the show is like, "See! This young black man is trying, y'all! But the system is against him!" Nah son, I see a spoiled (albeit fine via the actor)

Actually, I have faith in Duvernay, the lady is deep, she's got this.

She's going somewhere and I most definitely believe it isn't toward everything is poor Ralph Angel.

Ralph Angel kind of reminds me of Mary Jane's niece from Being Mary Jane - always quick to blame and guilt trip other people for their circumstances and poor decision-making, despite having a ton of familial support.  At least her immaturity was more age-based - I think she was late teens when the show started, maybe early 20s.

Yes, she is a hot mess, boy does she frustrate me. Just when I would think she was actually on her way to getting her act together, she'd drop the ball.

But honestly, from a story telling standpoint I love that this element of him was included.  I like that it isn't going to be easy for him.  And it is good that he is making rookie mistakes.  He'll learn better this way.

I do to, it makes for good story telling and I think I'm supposed to be frustrated with this aspect of his character. Still root for him, get frustrated and want to ring his ears at the setbacks, but never stop rooting for him, for all of them.

Nova and Charley should have known better than to think they could just go on about their lives and leave Ralph Angel and the farm to hope and luck--especially since he already has a full-time job that's a condition of his parole.

Why should they be the only ones to have known better? Ralph Angel is a grown ass man with a son and worse he was being offered help but because he's so damn immature, he refused it and ended up throwing money down the drain. I hope I don't see those two sisters of his treating him like some baby throughout this series. Where blame is on him, it needs to be pointed out and not placed on his sisters because they are women, supposedly smarter, and older. He is a grown man with a child, he needs to take ownership of it all. He bitched about wanting to try to keep the farm, Aunt Vi asked them to listen to  him, so they are giving him a chance, because no way in hell do I think they should help him farm that land. They said repeatedly that they aren't going to farm land and are not interested, and they shouldn't have to be just for Ralph Angel nor their beloved father. Those women too, have to live their lives.  Ralph Angel is blowing the opportunity all on his own and making it harder than it has to be right out of the gate because he doesn't have sense enough to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that, that cute black farmer guy offered to him. I forgot his name, but I suspect he'll be hooking up with Charlie eventually.  This is not the stage of life where he should be I have to prove I can do this ALL by myself and if someone steps in and helps me, I'm going to throw/break up all my crayons and pout because someone had to help me.

Clearly it's obvious that Ralph Angel is starting to annoy me. I see him as really having a lot of growing up to do and I have no patience because he has a kid. He and  Blue's mother need to just get it together. She seems to be on her way and I like that she doesn't whine and throw fits like Ralph Angel seems to do. He needs to calm down, he has family, he has people that care, he has more than one roof over his head, he's not going hungry, he has a job. He has it made when you compare his situation to many who come out of prison and have to start from scratch withouy help.

The young, black farmer guy offered to help him and he stupidly refused, he has to take ownership of that choice, not his sisters, because it cost him 15K, not Nova, not Charlie,  Ralph Angel did that all on his own. He needs to smarten up,  because his first crack at farming his father's land didn't have to start off this way. He probably didn't want to take cute farmer guy's help because he's probably jealous of the connection he had with his father and that he is a success. I can see that, but his father is gone now and no longer there, so he doesn't have to feel like he he's being compared to anyone. Because he seemed fine with taking help from the guy at work so??? Jealousy has to be at play as to why he wouldn't take the help of a long time friend/ fellow black farmer of his father's who has had success farming.  The guy at work, he just met him. Just because you ask for help or rather it's information he so desperately needs doesn't make you less of a man, it makes you smart and not out of 15K for crying out loud.   I think I have issues because it seems like he comes from a decent family and he might be spoiled courtesy of his father.  I keep thinking about what Aunt Vi said to him about not raising Blue the way he was raised, shielded from reality and it seems like responsibility as well.

However, I did like the scene with he and Nova at the end though.

  5. LOL, the teddy bear Ted, from the movie TED, has a new role on Empire, I love it.  I was waiting for that bear to say something.

I can't believe Luscious pointed his fake gun fingers at the back of Jamal's head.  Oh please, of course I believe it.

I hope Cookie's wardrobe improves because I don't know what the hell was going on with it in this episode.

Curious to know from anyone who has been watching during the day today if they had any discussion about Hillary's economic speech that focused on people with disabilities. I've been watching since I got home from work and they've said nothing about it at all so far. That's disappointing to me as a person with a disability whose job involves providing employment services to others with disabilities. I'd love for them to ask one of the Trump surrogates about his plans regarding my community. Or am I to assume that mocking us and trying to take away our healthcare are the gist of it?

There was during the day time of course, when viewership is lower. She had the young lady, I forgot her name, but it was a young lady who she's known since her days as first lady, she was sitting right next her as she spoke.  She also spoke at the convention if you can recall about when she first met Hillary, she was in the wheel chair.

Oh wait, I'm not sure if I was watching CNN or MSNBC at the time, sorry. But I do know they covered it briefly during the day time on one of these channels.  She talked about getting those who live with autism into the work force more.  I forgot who she listed off as partnering with to help with this endeavor but she gave quite a bit of detail on this policy from what I saw.

  7. As a matter a fact, Russell strikes as more of someone who would commit murder or at least pay to put out a hit on someone.  I thought he was capable of ANYTHING when he led in burning down Belinda's house.  Gamby is the kid from school who has no strength in his core, he's a follower. He's the idiot that ends up taking the fall, yet he wasn't really the mastermind behind it all. Dummy, you can see already Russell trying to run a game on Gamby with his "you" this and "you" that bullshit, with Gamby interjecting and reminding him that it was he too that committed all the crimes right along side him.

I think it would have to be someone who had a decent enough screen time though, which is why I like Ray for it. Could it be one of Belinda's kids?

Her kids didn't strike me as murderers. I don't even see her filling them in on what she would deem as a huge humiliation/failure. Whoever it was they were tall, taller than even Russell, as well as heavier. Heck, it could be the Russell's neighbor across the street since Neil is the one who knocked him out cold defending Russell. He knows what his car looks like, he pulled up in front of his house in it.  Although the guy didn't look as muscular as that neighbor but he sure did look to be the same height. And it would also explain why he also set Russell's car on fire too.

I'm thinking it's Russell's neighbor or someone Belinda hired because they still have that damaging footage of her that they can release.

  9. Melissa is cracking me up, with her don't bring me into this shit, I'm good with her (Tre), this season.

I laugh every time, looking at Melissa trying not to blow things cause she and Joe are on the inside now and I don't blame them, LOL.

When she was at the Wakiles, telling Jacqueline to cut the shit and leave me alone, I'm not in this, I could not stop laughing.

    Dear Bravo,

If you simply must cater to narcissistic queen bees, how about a show starring Vicki, Tre, Bethenny, Nene and Vanderpump - we can cheer the carnage as they scramble to be top bitch.

    Thanks in advance!

P.S. Did you catch the title hint? ;)

Tre and Nene would definitely end up punching the shit out of that uppity smart, ass mouth Bethanny. Those two could not take her mouth at all, she definitely would not be able to hide her "looking down on them" attitude.

On another matter, I don't give a shit about Kathy and Rosie, they aren't entertaining and that's not Tre's fault. This to me is much to do about nothing, it's nobody's business which is how Tre wanted to keep it but, Andy wanted them on the show and he's the boss.  However, Tre still has star power as far as this viewer is concerned and if she leaves I know I won't be watching. However, if the Wakiles leave I won't even notice that they are gone and Andy knows it.

  11. The person who shot Neil was clearly much taller than his wife's short husband, who looks much shorter than Gamby even. No way could that have been him unless this show is that bad that it thinks viewers like me don't notice huge differences in height. I'm thinking they are smarter than that because the show is on HBO, I'm hoping they are anyway.  Now could he have paid someone? Maybe, but I doubt it. He admitted he was jealous to Neil and he didn't seem sinister during that convo.. Not only that, Neil ended up encouraging his daughter to take up motor cross again which actually is what the stepfather said he was trying to use to build a bond with Neil'sdaughter. He gave her his bike at the end and said go for it.  So I'm seeing that whole dynamic, with the stepfather/father issue being resolved as much as anything can be resolved with immature Gamby.  Besides, I've just never gotten the impression that he actually hated Neil as in wanting him out of the way. Plus I just don't get a sinister vibe from that stepfather. Quite the opposite, I get a level of maturity that Gamby lacks being that he's a man willing to admit to another man that he was actually jealous of an emotional bond that said man had with his biological child. That's something that Gamby has trouble doing. The person looked as tall as the guy that Belinda brought in to take notes on Neil and Russell at the beginning of her tenure. That guy who wore a pony tail and a suit and didn't talk, all he did was stare and follow behind Gamby.

  12. I'm rooting for them all as well, but aunt Vi is right, this sheltering of Blue is what apparently occurred in the raising of Ralph Angel and it isn't good. I also think being the only boy, carrying the family name, he was his father's pride maybe and had huge expectations put on him because of it, and he when he felt he couldn't live up to them, he started going in the wrong direction.  Ralph Angel has a ton of growing up to do. I still can't get over that robbing of the store, it was just so stupid. I can't get it because he didn't do it because he and his child were genuinely starving and they had no home, nor food. It really pissed me off after I found out what kind of family he has. He's so immature; can he really take pride in offering his father, who is full of pride, stolen money? I mean think about it Ralph Angel, start thinking about some things.

I was glad to see him get that job and the pride in his face when he clocked out, I hope he can keep it going and not fly off the handle every time things go off course or they turn out to be hard.  Farming that land is going to be real hard, that's why their father stopped doing it, he was old, he didn't have the help or the money to pay for it and even though RA is young...it's going to hard. Is he going to get down on himself and just resort to old habits?

By the way, is RA the youngest? Because if he is and Nova is the eldest and he and Nova have the same mother, then the father cheated maybe? Maybe that's the reason Nova said, "mother" in that tone when referring the Charlie's mother having sent the flowers.  Who's the middle child Charlie or RA?

Anyway, this is a beautiful work of art, this show, absolutely rich and beautiful.

The book is based on a true story. The real person this is based on is not even named Teresa Mendoza. The book does give a bit more background on her and her rise, however. This US TV version in particular takes a fair amount of dramatic license. The original Mexican version is much better in pretty much every way so far, and more accurate, though after this last episode of the US version, I am hopeful for next season.

Some info on the real person this is based on and content that is in the original Mexican TV version I'll put in spoilers.

      Hide contents

The woman this is based on is Sandra Avila Beltran. She is, in fact, still alive and was just released from prison in 2015.

In the Mexican TV version, it ends with Teresa still alive (she did serve time in jail earlier in the series) though living alone and isolated and apparantly out of the drug world. She lives as well.

Not sure if that scene of Teresa getting shot in the first episode of the US version will hold up or not - it may end up being a dream or something. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

    Thanks for the info..

  14. It's about reality tv, but I'm a person who needs a break from reality tv. and I'd like to watch news that is investigative. Yes, please tell me what's going on with ISIS and governments around the world. But give me some investigative, factual reporting into our government and our private sector. The media is supposed to be our last line of defense against the people who would use their power to do harm to us. But now the media is part of the corrupt private sector. I have no interest in seeing the same idiots come on night after night to defend Hillary nor Trump with the same talking points. The media damn well has the republican and democratic platforms for 2016, start there. They are allowed to come and talk about their parties platform policies only, if they even say the name of the opposing candidate their mike will be cut. I don't need you to say Donald Trump's name if you're a Hillary supporter and vice versa. I'm watching the news, and I'm smart enough to listen to the details of the policies and tell the damn difference.  I would like to fucking know why I haven't heard the republican's LGBTQ policy talked about in detail on these news shows because it is absolutely unreal to me. I know it's in there because they mentioned it during the preparations for the convention but haven't since. Yes, let's talk about vouchers, it's a serious discussion about giving parents some choice and what that does to funding of public schools which if you have eyes you can see have pretty much crumbled.  Let's talk about why public schools don't seem to be getting the funding like the rat/mushroom plagued schools in Detroit which on Rachel Maddow covered in detail, in state run by a republican governor. Surrogates are well within their rights to call out opposing parties, and reporters should be fact checking. But I don't want to hear the candidates names come out of their mouths. I just don't understand what else besides vouchers, the republicans plan to do about public education, what are they planning to do about the actual unhealthy, unsanitary school buildings?

Let's truly get to the bottom of why immigration reform wasn't passed in Obama's first term when the democrats had the chance. What the hell actually happened media, tell me. Who exactly is playing games here? I can't figure it out. This is where you come in.  I need to know when opposing parties hide their other agendas in said bills to try and threaten the other party that they won't pass a bill unless.... It's because of Chris Hayes that I know they do that shit. But no one else in the media points that out when the bills are just sitting around not getting passed.  There's a ton of work for the media to do and like I said they aren't doing it and I hope that they all lose their jobs, except a few. Why? Because the rest of us would lose ours in a second for being so incompetent.  I want every news source that depends on advertising dollars to be shut down. I can't wait to HBO's VICE comes on five times a week with real news.

I mean at this point can one really blame a Trump supporter not trusting media?  I hate to say it, but over all they're right and it's not Trump's fault that they can't be trusted. The media is as corrupt if not more as they try to prove Hillary Clinton is...They're in bed with Wall Street too, sucking up those advertising dollars and prostituting themselves out to a reality tv climate in order to collect.

Bill Maher is absolutely correct when he says the money has to get out of the media.

This is connected to Vice right? The Vice that comes on HBO right?

So where can I find this Viceland?

  16. I love this show because Alice Braga is great as Teresa.  I too  can't wait till her character's screen time increases.  Although, it kinda sucks that I already know her fate ends with a shot to the middle of the head.

I really like Camilla as well, that lady is so cool, meanwhile her thirty year old looking teenage daughter, is an idiot.

Losing Brenda was sad, especially since I like the actress.

So Guero is still alive? What a punk.

Now, can  someone who's read the book tell me if it gives anything information about Teresa's background. Like, what about her family? Brenda at least seemed to have family members who she could leave her son with, where's Teresa's family? Does the novel tell anything about her family background?

I expect this from Fox but CNN and MSNBC have been helping Trump along almost as much while whoring for ratings.

To tell you the truth, I've turned to FoxNews quite a few times when MSNBC and CNN were airing Trump's bullshit rallies and they weren't airing them. I was like are you kidding me? How can FoxNews be this much smarter than CNN and MSNBC?

It's not that they are smarter, they're just much less pathetically desperate for ratings.

  18. The media can cover Trump however they want. If he wanted coverage today he should have been forced to put in writing what he was going to say ahead of time, otherwise we're not coming to your conference. What I wouldn't give for the media to go on strike when it comes to Trump events, to literally pick up and have left that conference today as he stood on stage. Now that shit would have been a story. There's plenty of investigative work for them to do because as of now, I think I can count on one hand the reporters who are trying to save this country by doing the leg work of investigative reporting.

So, the Big Announcement was at a newly opened Trump hotel in D.C.  I turned off MSNBC before the Big Announcement, but now I am reading in the news that Trump appeared briefly, said nothing about Obama, and then had a stream of military officers step up to the microphone to endorse him WHILE THE CAMERAS WERE RUNNING.  So, it became an infomercial for the campaign that many networks carried.  The Washington Post said that even Fox cut away at some point.  And Jake Tapper said this was a television version of web click-baiting, where you end up watching material you never would have clicked on otherwise.

And then Trump took selected media on a tour of his new hotel, but would not include print reporters.  The Post article said networks would not carry the tour because of the way he was treating the press.  And because it was another infomercial.

Honest to gosh, I think that when he is alone with his family and his advisors, he is cackling endlessly and saying "Can you believe these chuckleheads?  They *deserve* me as president because they are so stoopid."

The media is the story of this election and it's a pathetic one.  I can't wait till Dictator Don gets elected and reporters start disappearing, good times ahead for them. Once this election is over I don't think MSNBC and CNN will be seeing me. Like I said before, I hope these networks are completely destroyed since folks are getting their news online more and more. I hope the are completely run off the air, it would be a perfect punishment. I just hope that folks like Maddow, Hayes, Reid and O'Donnell can get good gigs. Maybe they can start a network. Oh scratch that, Dictator Don will be controlling the airways.

I think I heard ABC didn't give him any coverage, they cut coverage or something to that effect.

So the show this morning visited the comments from Trump's team that Hillary started the birther movement in 2008. Yawn.  Eugene Robinson said maybe someone on her team spent 10 seconds on this. Good for Eugene!  Then an old interview was shown where Hilary was asked about whether she thought President Obama was born in Kenya or a Muslim. She repeatedly said no. REPEATEDLY. CLEARLY. In the end she said one last no but added as far as she knows. Well, you know what they focused on, it was the last comment. I'm happy that I saw the clip because Joe tried to leave the audience with the wrong impression. She was pressed and in the same situation, I could see myself potentially saying the same thing.

I just commented on this shit in another thread, it's when Joe pulls shit like this and as I have said repeatedly calling the president weak, that's when he comes off as a bigot to me, period. It's when he pulls this shit that I side eye him, and like Trump, he can't help it, it's in there and it continues to come out.

  22. The issue with the Birther Movement, was stated best by Bernie Sanders in terms of what I as black person think, I remember Bernie said way back during the primaries, it was in front of the forum for Hispanic voters, that it was the audacity of Trump to ever think that he actually had a right to ask for proof of birth. Just the other day a Trump surrogate said what's wrong with just asking? Really?

Bernie points out that nobody asked him for his birth certificate and his father was born overseas just like Obama's. I was no Bernie supporter but he got that one right.  He dug down deep and got the essence of the problem. The question should have NEVER been asked.

He needs to apologize for asking the question.  Low class, Donald J. Trump, needs to apologize to the

honorable President Barack Hussein Obama II and the words have to come directly out of Trump's racist, shitty mouth.

And nice try bigot Joe Scarborough, you see your boy coming up and now you're going to try to make a false equivalent between he and Hillary by showing that tape of Hillary. I heard Hillary say that she took Obama at his word, that's good enough for me. Bye, just bye Joe, nice try.
