It's not a big deal, but I was surprised they let Will say "shit" during "Rolling in the Deep."  Several others have sung it over the years, but they always had to sing something else during that part (although I have the studio version by Haley Reinhart and she was allowed to say it then, just not on the show).

That surprised me too, especially because they were in a close up on him at the time. That definitely wouldn't have been allowed back in the day.

I thought Will did well with both genres and his Adele song worked very well in his style, very good choice. His inability to even do the 2 steps he'd agreed on made me laugh, he leaned on the crutch of high fiving the audience to distract from his lack of movement. But I'm fine with that, I don't think it's necessary to make a whole new persona just for one song.

As for dancing, I really wish Tristan would stop. He has such an unfortunate build, short and chubby with those weirdly baggy jeans and his style of dancing really accentuates all of that.

Usually I think his vocals are fine, but that Adele song really, really showed up the weaknesses. I don't know if it was the wrong key or just a poor choice, but he did not sound good at all.

Jack is doing his usual thing, I don't have strong feelings about it. He's good and he seems extremely confident or comfortable with himself, but I can't think of any performances that really stood out to me or that I'd look up to revisit.

Emmy seems so sweet and so genuinely surprised (as are the rest of us) each time she advances, but at this point, it's definitely seeming like some kind of power voting bloc must be behind it, I find it hard to believe she's connecting with this audience so much to survive all these eliminations on her own.

  2. I've been watching some of the seasons I tended to avoid in my typical rewatching (seasons 8-10 and half of 11 with the exception of certain episodes) and found a new Frasier moment that is just genius line delivery by Kelsey.

It's the episode where Martin forgets to mail the insurance payment and Frasier asks what his new insurance rate will be to renew. He doesn't like what he hears and sets the phone down going "Scandinavian shyster! Cold-hearted, glad-handed, highway-robber, phony big-toothed smiling son of a bitch insurance man!"

I don't think anyone could have delivered that line as perfectly and hilariously as Kelsey Grammer, it's just amazing.

Maybe they don't have wide enough talent pool of older challengers but I for one would love to see a true All-Stars edition that didn't include anyone who could be cast on the flagship.

I "think" that was Mark Long's initial plan that has now been co-opted and the lines blurred.

Knowing that Syrus & Genesis were alternates is super disappointing. I'd much rather they'd been on the show than Cara Maria or Brad.

I'd make a combo rule that all contestants must be 40+ and not on any version of the Challenge within the last 10 years. Further, they could lessen the physicality of the actual challenges/eliminations to be more age appropriate and make both the location and length of filming easier for working professionals.

With those changes, I think they'd get a on of interest from past challengers. I know I'd find it much more enjoyable to watch.

I don't understand how people like Genesis wind up on the alternates list when the original purpose of this show was to bring back people we hadn't seen in a long time.

Bring back the oldest schoolers you can find and then fill in the rest of the spots with the more current people as needed.

I never liked Mia so I was glad she went. She seemed like she was mostly OK with it when she assumed Kayko was staying but once it was announced it was Emmy you could see her face change to 'Why her and not me?' It was pretty hilarious.

That was incredibly awkward, she flat out refused to hug Emmy, to the point of actively stepping aside.

I do think they're all surprised every week when Emmy stays, she probably is as well. However, in last night's episode, I thought her performance was genuinely good.

The girls are dropping like flies, the likelihood of a female winner seems to decrease exponentially with each elimination.

    - "Joseph".  It's not terrible on its own, but that the weird-ass fascination Lilly had with him turned into a weird-ass relationship makes it worse upon re-watch, so I'll pass.

    - "Cargo".  This should just be on the bores me list, and I can't even explain why I instead wasn't willing to give it another look, but I pictured Mike and the memory of him bugged me so very much I wasn't.

    - "The Road".  I cannot with stories like this, where the detectives spend the whole episode with some male psycho (bonus hatred points for ones like these, where it takes place during a long drive) as he pontificates about the human condition and draws parallels between either himself or his victims and the female detective.  Another bonus hatred point that the surviving victim in this one is supremely annoying in her engagement party video.

I still have the last two seasons to poke through little-watched episodes, which I may not do if the mood fades as they're little-watched seasons; I generally only watch Officer Down, WASP, Two Weddings, and Flashover.  But that's my hard pass list so far.

totally agree with that list and the reasons behind it.

I also can't rewatch Cargo, nor can I remember the plot of it, I just know that I skip it every single time for reasons I can't pinpoint. Ditto for Joseph, there's just something I don't like and I don't know why.

I do like some parts of The Road, like Lily figuring out the hiding place by hearing the church bells, but I couldn't agree more about how annoying Brenda was. And similar to the offensive attitude toward overweight women in Lonely Hearts, it was offensive the way they assigned so many positive qualities to Brenda based on nothing but a video. She was an attractive girl with a social life so Lily deemed her stronger than the other women who'd died because they weren't lucky enough to be rescued.

As for episodes In the last 2 seasons, I also like Wasp and Two Weddings, but one of my favorites is The Runaway Bunny. It's infuriating at the end with that smug woman, but I really liked the story.

I like Charlie too. I wonder if people are burned out on the skinny superfan guys who hide their education level and/or age. I feel like we've had a lot of them over the seasons and they never win.

Which brings us to Q. The editors' obsession with him is ruining the season for me. Every time they cut to one of his THs he just sounds dumb. He's always saying dumb, delusional things. Apparently the show thinks it's hilarious that he's so dumb. So the season is being narrative by a dummy. And when it's someone else talking, they're talking about the dummy.

I don't think I can stomach - how many more weeks? - of Q narrating the show. I will probably keep it on series record, then FF to the end to see who is voted off. If it's not Q, it gets deleted instantly without me watching another second of it.

It's incredible to me that they managed to cobble together such a collection of odd ducks on that purple tribe that Q didn't look so bad at the start. Get rid of the delusional kid who thinks several means seven and the even more delusional Bhanu who blotted out the sun with his nonsense, and THEN Q can reveal himself to be nuttier than them all. It's the way he couches his nonsense in some faux moral window dressing that really bugs me.

I'm rooting for Tiff now that Hunter failed so spectacularly to read people. I know the editing makes it look more obvious than it probably was, but still, he's won or come close to winning every immunity. There aren't that many people left, he had decent odds to win those immunities after he used his idol. Trying to hang onto it for one more tribal was just greedy.

And I do not understand his sudden attempt to leverage it by blurting it out to everyone. If he wanted to get a particular person out, he should have just tried to draw all the smoke toward himself and then nullify those votes and send home whoever he voted for. Or if nothing else, just saved himself and let Q make his long overdue exit. "The 6" clearly wasn't working, Tevin's gone, the other guy's whose name is escaping me but he didn't make the jury is gone, Tiff and Q are sworn enemies now, so obviously that plan was moot.

It made sense to me that Tiff gambled on hanging onto her idol once Hunter introduced all that chaos with his idol reveal. And she needs it more, she hasn't won much of anything. But Hunter had his own challenge skills to fall back on, just a super dumb choice on his part.

Kenzie seems too enthralled with "exciting" vote outs to make it long term. Trying to boot out your number 1 ally without a solid backup plan seems like big move-itis that usually bites people in the butt.

I wouldn't mind seeing Tiff, Charlie, or Ben win at this point. Ben has to be fucking with the audience with his constant rock puns, right? I can't fathom that someone would really talk that way in all sincerity, so imagining it as a goof makes it funny to me.

I agree with this. I feel like Kayko is very manufactured and I haven't been liking him but I do appreciate that he's got fun energy even if, again, it doesn't even come off genuine to me.

Jack and his smile are a breath of fresh air. Also, he reminds me of Rafe from Outer Banks look-wise, which is nice lol.

Kayko seems like he's watched Dear Evan Hansen a few too many times, he's very, very musical theater. But he is having a blast up there and I would much rather see that than watch Emmy be shaky and terrified every week.

I finally figured out who Jack Blocker reminds me, but it's kind of an obscure one that I only know because I watch old episodes of Murder She Wrote constantly, lol.

So Cara Maria is supposed to play Kam's game for her now?  It was okay for others to say "I can never vote against Rachel so..." [Flora, whomever] but not for Cara to throw her vote away (if the order they voted in was shown correctly, it was obvious Rachel was going in)....I like Kam and Leroy, but that was a bit much!

Amused at Jasmine's talking head about playing dominoes at her HBCU.

How can Ayanna not tell that Kam is not going to out the people who told what they'd overheard?  I am so glad she's gone.

I am enjoying Kefla, whom I don't remember, but sorry that Syrus' gorgeous grin is gone from my screen.  I liked their "old man buddy buddy" chat.

I loved Kefla and Syrus' chat, what a bummer that they got immediately thrown in.  It was always interesting to me to see the people who were the "token" person of color on their own season (back in the day when it was typically capped at one) interact with people on the Challenges with more diversity, they were typically more relaxed and had a shorthand with each other that showed more of their personality.

I vaguely remember Kefla from his original season but I'm really enjoying this older version of him. I'd like to see him win the whole thing. If not him, then Brandon, who's been the low-key MVP of the season for one-liners. I wish he got a little more airtime because he seems genuinely funny and like a normal person.

So happy Ayanna didn't pull off the upset, she is just so hard to watch. I truly think there is something unbalanced about her mind, I feel badly for her kids, that can't be easy to have a mother like that. The way she views her nutty rants as moral sermons is the hardest part to take, it's not wisdom but she thinks it is.

Cara Maria put on one of the worst performances in modern Challenge history, IMO.  Her entitlement that people who clearly could not beat her in a final should help her get to a final was bonkers.  It's very easy for her to be ride or die for Jasmine - it's ALWAYS going to be in her favor if Jasmine is in the game.  She acted completely insane.  And it did NOT slip past me that the second Brandon said something back (that was accurate and stated mildly - that they hadn't spoken in 8 years), she immediately threw out the word "aggressive."  SHE was the only person who was aggressive, up to and including her opponent.  HER aggression towards Jasmine especially was really not fun to watch, but I did enjoy Jasmine calmly telling her to mind her business in the sand.  Did anyone else catch that CM deemed herself "Stara Maria"???  What the actual fuck?

The Stara Maria thing was a little cringey, like she'd thought of it before and was just waiting to use it in public. The crowd was unimpressed.

I can understand her being upset about her friends voting her in, but she handled it so poorly, the public tantrum was never going to get any other reaction than what it got.

    Quote

I don't know if Rachel could have beat CM in a physical battle, but I would have liked to have seen one.  Either way, I never expected to be pulling so hard for Rachel.  I always hope that when someone takes some time away they will come back improved, but CM seems to have come back worse.  I'm now watching AGGRESSIVELY hoping CM loses and soon.

What a waste this elimination was, you have Rachel vs CM and the competition is throwing stuff? I think one of the winners should have taken a shot once they saw what the elimination was, it was basically a coin toss. Could have been an epic physical battle.

This is the least objectionable I've ever found Rachel, so of course she's out early this time. I'm glad Veronica and Tina are left without their athletic friend and politicker, as I still find both of them fairly obnoxious. It's especially funny that Veronica is left with Tina, who she clearly doesn't like all that much and who she knows isn't going to do her much good in the game.

It was Kieran, it was a guy. Not sure if he’s still there or not. In general, there’s far less fanfare in the announcing, especially when they are slashing numbers so quickly.

I feel sure that coming from the producers. She didn't seem all that broken up about being adopted in the initial tryouts, and she's happy and in love and experiencing success. Why the tears? Cue the drama.

Julia is short, on the heavier side, and not conventionally beautiful, in this culture, she's always going to be on the losing side no matter how talented she may be. Women are always going to be judged by the same criteria, so it's an uphill battle to achieve anything if you're not stunning in looks as well.

I've been rooting for Emmy because she lives in Nashville, but mostly because I love her grandmother.   But I'm ready for her to go.  She is too nervous and her range too limited for the show.  And with her familial connections, she has lots of options as a songwriter and as a singer in smaller venues.

The judges have said nice things about her for two nights in a row.  But Megan Trainor is right; Emmy gets off melody too easily and it seemed to me tonight that she got lost a few times and had to hit the reset button on the song.

Does Loretta Lynn really have so many fans that the connection is keeping Emmy going? Her voice is pretty enough, but she's SO nervous that's it's awkward to watch week after week.

I did not love Roman's version of Roar while he was on the piano, but thought he sold it once he stood up and I'd rather see someone having fun trying things that may or may not work than watch someone terrified up there.

I feel like Roman could have been this year's version of that kid last year who did wild performances every week despite not being the best singer. Since only one person can win, I'd like to be entertained or surprised by the others.

I thought Abi's song was godawful this week, bad choice and poorly executed, but she's been great on other songs. I hope she takes Katy's advice and goes back to a different type of song.

Jayna sang well enough but just didn't stand out for me, I wish they would have saved someone else and wasn't surprised when she left.

McKenna's last performance was really good, I was ready for her to go, but that was good.

I still hate this format, it's just too quick. How awful to have the high of being safe 1 day and axed the next.

I hope this series gets picked up. Cold Case is one of my favorite shows. I wish they would tone down the personal drama.

Hmmm, the article suggests that they want to bring back the Scotty character in a”significant way” but that Lily doesn’t seem to be a part of the idea.

Besides being kinda shitty since Lily was the character in the original, it makes me wary of them doing even more personal stories, Scotty’s terrible taste in women was heavily featured in the original.

It wouldn’t be set in Philly and would only have one of the original cast, might as well just make it a different series, it’s not like there aren’t a million cop shows with similar premises.

  14. I can't believe Flora is back, I thought she'd been permanently banned. Also never realized she was Ukrainian, I always thought she was Russian. She has had a whole lot of work done, but she still looks relatively the same. Also, hearing her say she was 51 definitely made me blink hard, ouch.

Seeing this older, larger version of the Veronica/Rachel/Tina clique also made me feel some type of way. I figured Rachel would still be in fighting shape, but that face, oof. Earning that Butterface nickname since her very first challenge appearance.

RR Adam was another one I didn't think we'd see again, I'll be curious to see how Adam 4.0 shakes out, he was a phenomenal competitor back in the day, but quite an ass too.

Ayanna just makes me sad, I don't really enjoy watching her struggle to connect with people. Steve too, to a lesser degree, he's much quieter about it and doesn't have the meltdowns that Ayanna has, but it doesn't seem like genuinely connects with much of anyone. Having Adam here could help him this time around, but there must be something a little off-putting about him in real life.

I figured he would cut back on some of the other things because "Wheel of Fortune" is a lucrative gig.

I wouldn't bet on it, American Idol has paid him a mint over the years, plus I think he was executive producer on the Kardashians franchise, plus his radio gigs, hosting New Year's Eve, etc. Money doesn't seem to be the motivator.

per the internet, his net worth is $450 million already even before he starts Wheel of Fortune.

Tevan is so much more than than the flamboyant actor I first thought he was. He surprised me in the challenge and by his willingness to let Soda go.

Tim seemed sullen and grouchy to me this whole game and then, one minute after he's voted out, we see his beautiful smile and meet his good natured side. Where were you Tim?

Tim got me right at the end that too, that sly little smile and "I'm still the sexiest dad to ever do this" was adorable, I wish we had seen more of that personality.

Tevin is somehow growing on me too, I have loathed him since he dominated the previews leading up to the season. But the episode where he talked about his dad drew me and sometimes his over-the-top reactions are funny, like the "lord Jesus" he let out when Jeff mentioned cream cheese danishes. Cream cheese danishes is what would have tripped my trigger too, so his reaction was right on point.

Tiffany is my dark horse favorite, she's very logical but personable and entertaining. And Q is definitely painting an enormous target on his own back with his loudness and bossiness, plus he's a big guy and perceived to be a challenge threat, he's the perfect shield to tuck under.

I actually don't mind Venus. I'm not a fan per se but I find her entertaining and like how she brings chaos. She has some good points about them wanting to vote out women.

I felt bad for Mo but thought that maybe she should have spoken up earlier about the vote not being unanimous.

I don't like many of the tribe members this year except: Hunter, Ben, sometimes Maria, and Charlie.

Mo just completely miscalculated the move she needed to make, which I can understand. If you're by yourself with no one to bounce ideas off of, it can be tough to decide whether you're better off pretending to be part of a tight group or a free agent. She figured it out too late. Kind of ironic since she was targeted for seeming like a strategic threat.

Venus definitely has potential to shake things up if she can keep herself in the game long enough, which seems like a crapshoot at this point.

Agreed with everyone who dislikes the earn the merge thing. It would be a lot more interesting strategically to see how the 3 tribes tried to keep their majority numbers or gain a foothold (in the Purple tribe's case). A few sacrificial lambs on the chopping block doesn't move the needle much, strategically.

Earlier today, I heard Edie Brickell's "Circle" for the first time in a long while, and immediately thought of the fantastic "Sleepover" episode (which has "Circle" as its closing montage song).  That got me thinking how many songs have become indelibly linked in my mind with closing montages from this show.  It's one thing where I wasn't overly familiar with the song before hearing it used here, but there are songs I'd been listening to frequently, sometimes for decades, before this show came along, yet still became immediately and permanently associated with the episode.  The biggest example of that is "Dream On", which came out in 1973.  So I grew up with it, and over 30 years later it gets used for the "Bad Night" closing montage, and ever since I can't hear it without thinking of the fantasy of poor Angus seeing the truck in time and swerving to avoid it.

I always think of the first episode and Lily marching that guy through the downpour when I hear Have You Ever Seen the Rain. And almost every Bruce Springsteen song used in 8 Years makes me think of the scenes from that episode.

I'm glad Ziggy is gone.  He was just not that good, and way too much drama for me.  I'd say he has more of a chance in theater than in pop music.

I like Alyssa Raghu, but her showstopper performance was nothing special, and KB was fantastic in the sing-off, so if we could only have one of them, I'm glad KB got the spot.

KBlocks was interesting for a minute, but there were many better singers than her who got cut.  I suspect that America will not share the judges' affection for her.

I'm very glad Ziggy is gone, I couldn't take that level of drama every week.

I don't know what it was about Raghu that was off-putting to me, but something was. Well okay, I know her audition was kind of annoying how they put on the whole pretense that she just happened to give it another go while there to support her friend, but it also had the vibe of like, a person who got dumped and gets very fit and puts on a new persona to show that person who dumped them. Besides the weight loss, she just seemed like an entirely different person and not 100% comfortable in her new persona. Also, "I will survive" as your showstopper? That's a tired old karaoke cliche. Poor choice.

KBlocks is interesting, but probably too off-beat to go far on this show. I can see why the judges liked her and I did too, but I'm not foreseeing a long run on this show.

I don't think there's anything special about Blake Proehl. Sounds like every guy singing in a bar in Nashville on a Wednesday night.

Right?? Actually, he was good in his audition clip, but that Showstoppers performance was entirely flat. They had done like 3 "you're in the top 24" in a row so I knew someone was going to have to get denied and he seemed like the ideal candidate to let go of. He has already been extremely successful in one area (making it to the pros in football) so he's not a sob story, heartstrings candidate and his last performance was legitimately bad. I was shocked that he got through.

I'm honestly amazed there aren't more gospel/R&B/soul versions of "Come Together" out there. Or if there are, I've yet to hear them. That song lends itself quite well to that kind of style.

I agree last night's group of performers was generally stronger. And I know they've gotta amp up the drama and suspense and whatnot, but seriously, when you've got a contestant sitting in front of you, crying and getting emotional about making it this far and all that...is that really the time to play the whole, "It's the end of the road for you..with us, your future is in the viewers' hands now." schtick?

I really enjoyed that performance of Come Together and I agree that it lent itself very naturally to the style change up and fit the rasp in his voice.

Doing the fakeout with the guy who's living in one room with 12 people was cruel. And Katy REALLY sold that one, I was shocked myself at first. However...the diamond encrusted watch, rings, necklace, glasses really clash with the tale of hard times. Like, maybe they're fakes, but I assume you'd want people to think they're real, so it still seems an odd choice if you're looking to garner sympathy for your plight.

I can't remember the name of the 15 year old country singer who acts like he's 45, but I think I like him. I can't quite make up my mind on him, but I think I like him. He's definitely comfortable up there and I always appreciate that. It's hard to watch the stage fright types struggle through it.

In reading the book this show was based on, I’m struck by how Chloe Sevigny was miscast in this role. This is how the book describes CZ:

What set CZ apart from her fellow debs was not her height but her beauty. Her looks were such that she won the title North Shore’s Prettiest. Beauty had been C.Z.’s magic wand all her life. All she had to do was to wave it and she got what she wanted. As a little girl, adults looked at her and praised her in a way they did not children who had more common looks. As a debutante, her dance cards were always full.

I like Chloe as an actress but she doesn’t match this description. What is interesting is that normally in TV or movies, the actors are better looking than the real life people. But I’m not seeing that here with a few of the characters (CZ and Babe, but especially CZ). I also don’t buy CZ as a blueblood. Something is lacking in Chloe’s portrayal.

Here is CZ and Chloe Sevigny.

Yeah, the styling did no favors to Chloe Savigny's already not classically beautiful face and she doesn't remotely resemble the real CZ Guest. I found her performance overly mannered in a way that didn't quite fit.

This is accurate. The thing is, she often had the right attitude, like wanting to confront things person-to-person rather than whispering behind backs, but she couldn't stop talking long enough to have an actual discussion.

And in my experience, people who want to confront things that way don't understand that not everyone is that direct and that their directness can come across as aggressive. Doubly so if they can't stop talking over people.

I thought this was a pretty good WTA, though I'd have preferred a full session of the girls fighting with each other vs rehashing some of the rejectees "journeys" with Joey.

And at least Sydney admitted that she was annoying, perhaps there was a life lesson there. She was annoying on her own, but the edit really hammered that home. That had to be a tough mirror to look into.

I read an article a few years ago about someone who was there. She said this was the case. It's all fake.

I like that Daisy walked herself out and didn't start sobbing and acting devasted when Joey confirmed he wasn't picking her. Refreshing change.

Rainsong, I'm kind of glad to hear RS was wrong. The guy can be arrogant!

She should have chosen either different shoes or practiced walking in them a little more. Those long Bachelor camera scenes of people walking away are a staple and she was walking like a linebacker in a dress.

Joey giving her such obvious clues gave her the time to compose herself. Since I don't really enjoy the scenes of someone gushing their feelings only to be shut down seconds later, I appreciated this approach.

From an editing perspective, the season was a bit of a surprise, I didn't clock Kelsey until they were down to like 5 people. Daisy's story came through even with all of the Maria vs house drama that occupied so much time, but the most thought I gave to Kelsey was thinking that she and Lexi looked like sisters.
