  1. Finished the last ep last night. Anh seemed really nice, and fortunately didn't need Antoni's help. Getting the Beyond Meat packaging in every shot seemed to be his job for the cooking segments.

I was watching old shows with my daughter who missed a lot traveling years ago. Antoni cooked a lot more in the early shows, it was shortened more and more as time went on.Sometimes it was simple, sometimes a little too hard I thought but he had a larger role.

From some "behind the scenes" messages online, it seems editing has been worse. Not sure why. What they choose to show etc.

Alison (ex nun) on Reddit (said verified) told a lot about her experience and said very much was cut out and she worried until it was shown over a year later, what it would look like. Editing is an art, but sometimes it makes someone look a certain way or whole scenes are left out. Having 60 people in your home vs the 5 you see is something to adjust to also. Even the clothes they showed with her, (I didn't like most) weren't the only ones but although she liked them, they werent chosen. I don't like that. Did they want more risque because she was an 'ex nun" Ex doesn't mean she's some crazy, "I want to be 100% different" person. She's the same, just took a different path. I can link it if anyone is interested. I think to help her charities, she figured she would answer questions, especially about her being repressed etc (she's not, she chose Catholicism  as an adult and still goes to church) I'm looking into her work more when I have time. Very interesting and she thought they'd highlight it more, but the "dates" were picked. I felt it didn't fit at all, she wasn't anxious for a date but that sells I guess for an episode. If they keep doing that, they'll lose what made them special.

Not surprising that the show is more interested in their perceived narrative than actually helping people.

  3. Almost done with this season, and Antoni still doesn't seem capable of doing his job. His "cooking" segments have gotten sadder as the show goes on. Nachos? Any stoned college student could throw that together. And with Alison, he had a chance to teach her a little bit about mixology and maybe find her a interesting cocktail that would be tasty. Nope, he made her a screwdriver. So lazy.

I get that his major selling point is his looks, but at least give some sort of effort for these people. Too bad Bobby's leaving and not him.

  4. Man, this was a rough episode. Who knows how many people Roy has killed and disappeared. If the FBI searches his property, he's screwed. But I hope Dot gets to deliver his coup de grace.

  5. Couple of nagging questions here:

    1. How does one just "have someone committed" against their will? Aren't there strict rules/laws on how this works?

    2. What is Roy's plan with this "get Dot/Nadine back" thing? It's not like there's a bounty out for her, and she's not actually anyone's property. He hasn't been shy about letting everyone know what he's doing, but I guess he's not too concerned with the law other than his own.

The unresolved story with "Boulevard" was odd. I thought the producers already sussed out the real culprits and story line before Nev played catch-up for the cameras. Surprising they would go ahead with a story that has no payoff.

Nev let those 3 off the hook pretty easily. Why didn't he push harder on the CashApp account that was linked to the mom's name? It just seems like a waste to go that far, then let the catfishers say "nah, I don't wanna talk about this anymore."

The catfishee seemed pretty dumb, as usual. But I have to wonder about someone (the catfisher) who would be totally fine with him ready to pull the trigger on MOVING to their town and not putting a stop to it before it happens.

Strangely, I don't see this ep listed on IMDB anymore.

  7. My wife pointed out something that I hadn't thought about until now. Why are some of the characters on this show written to be SO dumb/naive? When Dot offered up her ridiculous explanation of where she'd been, the husband was like "oh, golly gee, well, I believe you!" If this scenario happened to me, there's no way I'd believe a word of it. I know people are inclined to believe their spouses, but no one is that dumb.

I don't know if the writers are trying a little too hard to portray "Minnesota nice," but reeling it back a bit would be good. This also happens a lot with portrayals of southerners.

  8. I actually felt bad for Zack, and that's rare for this show. He wasn't doing anything differently than most of us do when it comes to online dating, and he didn't seem like the typical moron they usually profile. I had no idea that criminals were using dating sites to set people up for robberies.

With the catfisher duo, fuck both of them. His half-assed explanation about driving traffic to OnlyFans was total BS. I'm sure his only "business" is scamming people, and they didn't seem remorseful at all.

You are onto something. When they all move in together, I have no doubt now that Jeff will have multiple soulmates. I also suspect that this is when things are going to get sexually dicey in a lot of ways. The gay couples will need children and I suspect that younger females of childbearing age are going to be forced to conceive and carry these babies. It's going to get BAD when they move in together.

Keith from NXIVM seemed to want money and power. Jeff seems to want money, power and to fuck with people. There's something that's just an extra level of sadistic with Jeff. He seems to enjoy what he can do to torture people.

    As for Elle

      Hide contents

She really tormented that guy for a long time according to the podcast. She followed him to Europe. She forced her way into his apartment and wouldn't leave. She followed him everywhere. There was no "We happened to be at the same club" -  it was long-term stalking pure and simple. On the podcast he breaks down a little when he talks about how scared he was and how he had no idea what she would do. She was in jail for a year for a very good reason and not just because she happened to be in the same club as him once. This poor guy was severely stalked for a long time.

If their "compound" ever gets built, I'm sure Jeff's goal is to have sex with/impregnate as many of the members as possible. That seems to be the goal of almost every cult leader.

Another thing that mystified me is that Jeff and Shaleia seemed to have no problem telling their followers how wealthy they were making them. Even aside from the Insta pics of her modeling designer clothing, he actually told everyone repeatedly how rich they were from this. And nobody seemed to care or understand that it's all just a grift.

As bad as it all is, they don't seem to be breaking any laws, so they'll just get to keep doing what they're doing.

Calling bullshit on all of Krystal’s excuses. Poor me, I’m not worthy so I couldn’t see you but I’ll happily take your money. “Deep tissue massages “ and “art meetings” at cheap motels? Even if they’re together now, she was playing that guy really hard and he won’t see it.

He seemed so desperate after his divorce that he was willing to put up with anything. I laughed when he lamented being single for a year and a half. That really isn't a long time, but some people do not do well alone.

The producers are getting lazy. How many times have we seen the catfish revealed to be a previous catfish? Half their work is done if they just recycle the catfish.

This show has got to be on life support by now. I'm waiting for the ep where both parties are previously seen Catfish that are now catfishing each other. And Nev can fake amazement like he always does.

Okay, so obviously this isn't good. It's the kind of wish-fulfillment fantasy that a lot of writers pass off as a story while they're still learning -- the difference being that, if you're not famous, it usually doesn't get shown to the world.

So, in that sense, it doesn't surprise me that The Weeknd's first attempt at long-form story-telling was this.

The main thing I'm curious about -- and please tell me if there's info about it somewhere -- is whether HBO specifically axed the first version of the show because The Weeknd complained about it, or if they reached that decision independently.

From what I understand, it was because he didn't like it.

I wasn’t that familiar with Troy Sivan. I knew the name, online “star” thing but this is my first time hearing him perform. Bleh, his voice is mediocre but his acting was awful. Continued proof that a pretty face and a good web cam and you, too, can become famous. Lily-Rose just needed great genes and famous parents. Half boob, ass in the air and withering around on the floor isn’t exactly a resume builder.

The creepy woman with almost no eyebrows that did a song during the lap dancing "meeting" is also a real singer. She was apparently also on Euphoria but I don't remember it.

Now, to be fair, I didn’t watch every episode and my knowledge of the rest of it is from online reviews and synopses… but I’m weirdly fascinated by the train wreck and it sounds like things just went from bad to even worse.  My theory is Dan Levy noped out of most of the show to preserve his dignity.

Something interesting COULD have been done with these dark themes. Clearly, they were more interested in being edgy and building up to the plot twist of “she was evil the whole time mwahaha!”

I have to laugh at her corporate overseers agreeing to finance a tour where her opening acts are unknown, inexperienced weirdos.  The clip of them being so impressed by that girl warbling about lonely crocodiles crying… 😂

Most of the show also looks either too poorly lit or washed out — critics have said “at least it looks good,” but I think most of it looked kind of ugly.  Her house is ugly, the office sets are really ugly, the outfits are ugly (so much unnecessary underboob!), the lighting is ugly.

The house is the Weeknd's actual house, which explains a lot.

  15. What happened to Dan Levy's character? Wasn't he part of the team of managers/agents/whatever in episode 1?

Also, why are the people from the "family" opening for Jocelyn when nobody knows who they are? Are we supposed to believe they all had albums ready to go just in case they got the call? And were they all released in the six week time jump? Mike Dean must be the busiest stoner ever.

  16. I don't even feel like breaking down what a mess the finale was. However, it definitely felt like there was a missing episode between 4 and 5. I know the network said there wasn't, but I really don't see how they got from ep 4 to the finale. I yelled out "wait...what?" so many times.

We could not believe Mike Dean was an actual music producer. We were laughing at the 60-year-old clown rolling up in a cloud of pot smoke to the mansion to work with Tedros only to find out he works with The Weeknd in real life. "Art" imitating life.😂

Also, any illusion I had before this that The Weeknd has any talent has been dispelled.

He must have owed the Weeknd a favor or something. No way he'd get involved with this mess otherwise. He also co-wrote and produced one of the songs on the soundtrack.

It's been reported that they're only doing 5 eps, so don't look too hard!

I think that scene with Xander was to show that Jocelyn knows exactly what she's doing. Notice he said "Ask Jocelyn" why he no longer sings. She knew all the shit her mother did to Xander, but pretended not to because her mom is the evil one, not her. She's been watching Tedros treat everyone like shit and backing him up. You'd think that when it actually came to him torturing her best friend, someone she's been BFFs with since childhood who has been through everything with her, she'd actually put a stop to it, but she enjoyed that shit.

Loved Destiny this entire episode. From the "we should just kill him" to her giving actually great advice on vocal and life to her great people watching with the stoic face when her brain is all, this is bat shit craziness! We also found out that she's also Jocelyn's manager (why does she have to 2 managers??).

Also loved the maids totally trashing Tedros and then ending the scene casually with, "we need to find another job....with sane people." Lol!

I need my hiphop card taken away cause I did not realize Mike Dean was a real ass person until I watched the behind the scenes. (According to Wikipedia he's one of the pioneers of the Dirty South sound of the late 1990s-early 2000s! And I'm from Miami, and was in HS/college at that time so I basically grew up partying to that shit! Shame on me! he also was Selena's musical director and producer?!?!? I now need to do an entire deep dive....). I was very worried he and his people weren't getting enough oxygen with all the weed they were smoking. But they were really cracking me up with all the WTF! looks getting thrown back and forth between each other during the recording sessions, plus Mike Dean playing the piano accompaniment to Tedros vs Ex-boyfriend all while smoking his weed and shaking his head, like "this is real dumb, but I'm just gonna mind my business and play my music."

To be fair, several indictments and trials happened as they were airing the first season, AND they had convinced that crazy Nancy Saltzman, as well as several of the other followers like Nicki Clyne, to interview. They had to do the second season at that point.

Now for this show, they have no damn reason cause only the 5 us are watching this shit!

The scene where Mike Dean rolled up in the ridiculous car with weed smoke pouring out and a bong in hand reminded me of something the Lonely Island would do. Is smoking a lot of weed still controversial? Considering it's legal in half of the US states now, I doubt it.

It’s such an obviously cynical enterprise that it doesn’t merit even a hate watch.  Even the gawk-at-a-car-crash fascination of how badly this thing turned out wears off quickly.

And it’s because the showrunners and MAX truly do not care.  Throw together some titillating scenes and themes, cast a famous musician and a young pretty actress with a famous, controversial dad, throw out some deliberately obnoxious retorts to early bad reviews to generate more press, and viola!  Instant controversy equals instant buzz and clicks and even hate-watching equals $$!

They know the storytelling is absolute crap.  They have to.  Nobody involved in the final product could have possibly believed “yes, we have made a thoughtful and compelling exploration of abuse within the music industry!”  or even “this is a sexy and dark new take on the fame-is-dangerous genre!”  This script is on the level of a bad Lifetime movie but they get to swear and have nudity.

Tedros is an obvious, unappealing scammer and manipulator and everyone falls for his crap and allows him to dominate Jocelyn within a matter of *days* because the thin plot of this mess requires it.  MAX is simply chuckling all the way to the bank as they get away with having The Weeknd act out sexual sadism on a constantly under-dressed woman who plays an absolute nincompoop.

I agree with all of this. It's amazing what 2 men (the Weeknd and Levinson) with tremendous egos can accomplish. They got HBO to throw a pile of money at them to make this garbage after redoing everything because Mr. Weeknd didn't think it focused on him enough.

And I doubt HBO will see any profits off this show. I'm not sure how money is made for the network in the modern TV industry, but I'm guessing this one will be an expensive write-off.

  20. Really enjoyed this one, and I don't care if it "felt like" Black Mirror or not. Some of the future vision stuff reminded me a bit of Stephen King's The Dead Zone, but maybe it was just a coincidence. And I thought both the lead actors did a great job.

Overall I really enjoyed this season. And I did appreciate that they took some thematic chances instead of beating the virtual reality concept to death.

I would fanwank it that it is better for the mission to have the physical bodies on the ship. That way, if something goes wrong with the link/the replicas, the mission can still continue with the physical bodies doing the work. It seems to me almost by definition, the replica technology could not have been tested for the length of the time of the mission, the distance away from Earth, etc. etc.

Also, I would think that there would be a need to adjust to things on the fly such that it would behoove having the real people in space and closer to the action. And I hate to be cynical, but people caring about their physical bodies might mean that they would be more attentive than if the welfare of just their replicas at stake if something goes wrong with the mission.

Presumably, the replicas can't do anything without a conscious mind guiding them, so the lack of the physical needs of the replica don't matter when the real person will still need to eat/sleep/etc.

My impression was that they normally would stagger the time off, so that there was always at least one astronaut awake and available to take care of ship's duties. So it's not that the humans would only work on Fridays, it was that Friday was the start of an overlap period between the two. David (say) would be on duty Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, while Cliff would be on duty Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

That does make sense. And I'm guessing they didn't abort the mission after the initial tragedy because they were already 2 years into the mission. If it would have taken 2 years to return to Earth, that's still a very long time to wait around to get back. And NASA had undoubtedly invested billions in this mission.
