Shiv was still so completely oblivious even after she found out she wasn't going to be Mattson's pick for CEO. "Mattson took me seriously!" Oh, you sweet summer child. She didn't know she would be reversing the power between her and Tom as soon as she told Mattson that Tom would "suck the biggest dick in the room." That was exactly what Mattson wanted and Shiv basically picked Tom out for him in that moment.  And Tom was right that if it were the other way around, she would have totally screwed him over

I may need to rewatch.  But ultimately he did take her seriously.  This is essentially her plan without her as CEO. I keep seeing comments saying she should gotten a commitment. There are no commitments in business. He essentially will go the avenue that’s best for business.  I’m not sure that was ever Shiv.  But her plan was still smart to bypass regulatory. Also she’s the reason Gerri is back.  Ultimate his sexism led to him choosing Tom but this is her plan.

I also need to rewatch the season.  I mostly feel like a happy ending wasn’t in the cards honestly for any of these people.  But I ended feeling bad and bleak for everyone.

Shiv in a non working marriage because she wants some sort of home.  Roman starting how he finished the most honest of them.  Ken is the most adrift and still is.

Except, in the article the "I" was in italics which I took as the author of the article passing on some information.

That’s the rumor making the rounds.  I did not see the script and have no idea how it plays out.

That's a line that came directly from the show last night so I don't think it's a spoiler for future episodes.

  4. I felt as sick as I did in 2016 and 2020.  Bravo to the writers.

I had two cups of sleepy time tea to fall asleep

I almost never have spoilers because I hate them but I have one.  Added to the spoilers thread.

    Shiv is well named.

    "You didn't deserve ME!"

Frankly, sweetie, the only people who actually DESERVES you is a sociopath.

I thought this was a call out from the therapy episode with her dad. Remember when he made her cry by telling her that Tom wasn’t good enough for her.

I don't think Shiv could ever learn to be a good mother. She's an inherently cruel, selfish person who always thinks she's right, and she has no concept of what a healthy parent/child relationship looks like. I don't think she's ever had a healthy relationship of any kind with anyone.

Speaking of which - sorry, Shiv, but even if Tom hadn't been a rat, you still wouldn't have been spending quality time with your father during the last six months of his life. Your plan was to block Logan's deal - if that plan had succeeded, she and Logan would have been on the outs anyway.

I actually do think that Tom loved Shiv, despite how severely messed up their relationship has always been. I believe him when he says how badly he was hurt by her. And I think she loved him, in the way that someone loves their dog.

A lot of women with these attributes have turned into good mothers.

I don’t think Shiv loves Tom at all. I think she likes that he cares for her. Tom has been hurt by her but also very rarely advocates for himself and let’s her treat him badly.

I'll disagree with this, I guess.   I think he's absolutely fine with the latter simultaneously as long as he also gets enough of the former.  He's not a complete idiot.

I don’t think he’s fine with it.  He says he’s fine with it.  Like he says the scorpion is a joke but it’s  not. He was throwing himself in for the CEO role two episodes ago again.  I don’t think he wants a housewife but to constantly be subservient to his wife at the same company is a no for Tom.

I don't think Tom wants a traditional housewife, but in season 2, when Shiv told Tom that Logan was going to name her his successor, Tom felt that he deserved the role over her, and that thought she was to be helping him up the corporate ladder. As for having children, his insistence on having children seemed more like having an anchor baby to solidify his role in the family.

Yes! He probably was fine when she was working in politics. But now she’s his competitor

Does he?  I never got this vibe from him.  Sure he wanted a child, but I never got the idea he needed or wanted Shiv to be some kind of lesser person.  I think one can want a strong person to support them.

    Maybe I'm reading you wrong.

You didn’t?  How about when her father offers her the CEO role… and he says I thought we wanted that for me.  Part of their issue is he wants someone supporting his career not building up her own. This is the position he’s stuck in but he definitely wanted the top role and the supportive wife.  Problem is, Shiv wants it too.

Okay, I need another time check. We know this episode took place on a Monday. Did Logan die on a Friday evening? Or or Saturday? We know that it occurred on a weekend, because the markets weren't open. So that means we're around 10 days out, and they still haven't buried him? Having the funeral be episode 9 or 10 made sense when they were doing an episode a day, because that would make it about a week after his death, but with all the jet setting they've crammed in, we have to be pushing 2 weeks.

Another line that jumped out at me. Shiv mentioned that Tom took away six months she could have spent with her father. If she's only 16-20 weeks pregnant, and Tom's betrayal was 6 months ago, then the baby wouldn't be his. During their argument he said "You wouldn't even have my baby" which could stand on its own, since that was a sticking point in the season 3 finale, but would ring especially harsh if she went out and got a sperm donor immediately after they became estranged.

It just shocks me how much I can hate each Roy sibling, yet root for them at the same time. Like Kendall's encounter with Rava was so ugly, yet I want him so badly to out maneuver Mattson. And I was feeling really sympathetic toward Roman, since he's so obviously spiraling, but then he was a jerk to Connor and Willa. And Shiv is so frustrating, but I still find myself rooting for her.

I think the baby is definitely Tom’s and shows just don’t sit around counting the weeks like we do.

I agree with a lot that Tom said about Shiv.  But with regards to her mothering abilities, he is WAY out of line though.  Despite what men think women are not born knowing how to be mothers, it’s something you have to learn how to do.  And a woman agreeing to have your baby is never just about you, it’s something that the woman has to feel comfortable doing at that time in her life because it’s a massive undertaking.

A lot of Tom’s problem with Shiv’s is he wants a different kind of wife.  He wants somebody who’s basically going to back up his career and be the mother of his child.  I won’t fault him for that, but he should’ve thought about who he married.

  11. So Shiv betrays her family because she was boxed out.  Madsen takes the info but isn’t remotely sold on Shiv in any kind of role. He needs to think about it.  That’s worse than a care package of blood bricks.

Will Shiv ever find someone who sees her value?

    Follow up:

Does she have any business value?

Will I ever learn to spell Madsen’s name. No excuse I have an entire branch of Swedish relatives.

Honestly Tom and Shiv weren’t doing well.

Scorpion wasn’t a gift that’s really what he thinks of her.

    And he’s sort of right.

But he’s a jellyfish.  Stop bringing breakfast trays to person that almost sent you to prison

    I just had a brainstorm

Tom is the Greg in him and Shiv’s relationship

  12. Living Plus is giving major Theranos vibes.  This won’t end well.

I am over Shiv and Tom.  Their relationship is terrible.  I fully support them ending things. Shiv has never been into Tom and watching her pretend to be is brutal. They don’t have any chemistry.  It’s like a sick sort of game with no winners.

    Roman and Kendall never learn.

  13. I feel the need to comment because when this show came out I gave it a scathing commentary for basing female friendship on being fighting over some dumb guy whose never worth it.  But it slowly won me over.  I hated Tully but by the end I was team Tully for life. When Kate died, I sobbed so hard.  It’s such a good show but Tully is a hard sell.  But in the end, I was rooting for her hardcore.

The show has yet AFAIK to give any indication that Matsson is the sort of socially awkward, clueless and/or neurodivergent person who would both 1. repeatedly send frozen bricks of his own blood to someone he was dating and 2. needlessly share that information with someone he is in an adversarial relationship with, or at least, is not in a particularly close relationship with.

For all the antics of real-life tech bros, I don't think that any have come to light that would parallel the utter cluelessness it would take for Matsson to genuinely have done this and to without prompting or need bring this up to Shiv sincerely seeking her advice (as opposed to the people he pays for advice and can trust for their confidentiality and loyalty).

BTW, Shiv's advice is not necessarily obvious. There could be certain forms of non-monetary compensation that might have been necessary, or the powers that be might not have wanted to sell at any price. I don't see Matsson as making fun of it. I see it more that he's amazed that it is just that simple.

I think keep offering more money is the definition of obvious. I thought their exchange laughing about how obvious it is was sort of funny. This show is study in rich people culture so social implications are very much relevant here.

I don't doubt that there are entitled men who do dumb things, because we have ample evidence of that.

I do doubt that there are too many entitled men as smart as Mattson seem to be who unnecessarily bring up the dumb, creepy things they do to people that they do not need to bring them up to, who aren't in a particularly good position to help them and who are potentially in a position to hurt them.

It's not as though Shiv is some sort of specialist in smoothing over sexual harassment, or was in a position to give him any profound advice as to how to deal with the ex. And taking his confession as true, telling Shiv about it is a risk that she would be weirded out by him both professionally and personally.

Given his wealth, Mattson presumably has access to attorneys, non-Ebbe flaks, therapists, friends, etc. who could give him advice on what to do about Ebbe if that were a genuine situation. Why turn to Shiv, who he literally just met, and who has interests that might be adverse to his?

There are plenty of men as smart as Mattson that would do this and then admit to it. He already got ATN at the higher price by offering more money until he got a yes.  He didn’t need Shiv.  Her advice was obvious, just keep offering more money which he rightly makes fun of…because it’s non advice. Yet he still takes it because he wants ATN.

This is completely believable.  Mattson is supposed to reminiscent of Elon Musk according to the show creator who regularly does dumb shit. Smart people even really smart people can also be over-sharers. Peruse his twitter.  We will see what happens but I am willing to be this isn’t some big twist.

  16. Roman and Ken are the worst negotiators.

Madssen says he wants to add in ATN

    Roman responds with Why?

and Ken is like we need to take a beat like he has no contingency plan for Madssen to say anything other than what he wants.

I feel so far it’s clear that Ken and Roman are kind of incompetent.  I thought it was just me but the show creator agreed in the HBO podcast

  17. I thought that Shiv calling Kendall on his PR bullshit about Logan in front of Roman was interesting.  I thought this would end up being a huge reveal but Roman seemed nonplussed knowing Kendall was planting stories

  18. I don’t think Madssen is playing them.  I think he really thinks it’s worth more with ATN added.  The ATN real life equivalent Fox makes a sh*t load of money plus anything that influences people has power tied to it.  It basically gives him a wheelhouse to exert power in the US.

Kendall and Roman’s only attachment to ATN is their father. It’s a good deal for two brothers who aren’t that smart at business.

No one buys something for that much $$$ to eff with the Roys. And I think Shiv also wants it gone. It’s less he’s working her than they both want the same thing.

Matsson never sent anyone blood. If he did, he would never admit that to anyone in a position to use that info. against him.

The playbook on the Roy kids has been out for a while, and the headline is "Easily Manipulated." Matsson's had these three clocked since the moment they answered the phone. He's a Logan Roy-level business genius/sociopath and he's going to get whatever he wants out of them.

He absolutely did.  It always amazes me people who are surprised that powerful men do dumb things and admit to it.  It’s the entitlement that allows them to do this.

Poor little Shiv. (Not.) I'm not sure why I can never dredge up any sympathy for her, but this episode didn't help. I get that she, as the youngest, and a girl, has had to fight for every bit of recognition she can from the family. That's why she was working for someone else when we met her. But she has no patience, blurts out the wrong thing at the wrong time, all in a bid to get someone to recognize her brilliance, which really may not exist.

She's in a bad place (emotionally) in that her marriage, which supported her in some way, is done, by her choosing. (Tom's betrayal was a result of her treatment of him.) Now she's pregnant, but not sure what that means. Will she go forward with the pregnancy? I guess we will find out. She probably does not have a great idea of what being a mother can be, given her relationship with her own mother (another betrayer).

This episode was very interesting to watch as the siblings start to realize they may not want the deal, but want to keep Waystar for themselves (or Kendall, wanting it for himself).

Even though Logan was not physically present, he was very much still influencing everyone's behavior. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.

    Because she’s not very nice.

The actor is so good she makes us want to empathize with her though.

I'm imagining any daily conversations between the two of them going like this:

Logan: Are you going to sign the fucking divorce papers?

Marcia: I will not sign the papers.

    Logan: Fuck off!

Don't just get it in writing. Written documents can be challenged. Gotta operate purely on a pay as you go, cash and carry basis.

It’s true they can be challenged but most often they family will give you a settlement which is better than a taxi ride to the subway back to your little apartment
