  1. Just seen it and really enjoyed it.

Rather big spoilers ahead so fair warning - don't read under the tag unless you don't mind being spoiled...

    Spoiler

I am happy that I have some comic book knowledge as well as a general idea of the release schedule so I have some idea of what may be coming, otherwise that ending would have made me quit the entire universe! But I believe that Ant-Man and the Wasp will expand on the quantum reality concept which should then take centre stage in Captain Marvel which will cleanly lead to some time and reality altering to stop the mass genocide that was the end of Infinity War, in the sequel...

As for the movie itself?  Tony and Wanda were the standouts and I much enjoyed Thor and Dr Strange as well.   Considering how much of it took place on Wakanda I am surprised to feel that Black Panther felt a bit left by the wayside...  Cap was great as always....

As for the negatives, Quill...  I just couldn't with his absolutely asanine response on hearing about Gamorra... Tony, Peter, Mantis and Strange was so close to getting that gauntlet off, and his rage ruined it!

I forgive Strange's folly, as that was pretty much forshadowed and I guess we are supposed to believe he saw the only way to rectify the entire mess was by giving up the time stone.   Well, I hope so at least, otherwise he is an even bigger idiot than Quill...

I do find it interesting that of all the heroes it was the original Avengers that didn't fade... Don't know if there'll be some significance in that, but it was something I immediately picked up on...

  2. Just back from the movie.  I really enjoyed it a lot.  Answered a few of my questions following Force Awakens, but definitely not a lot of them.

    Spoiler

I was not a big fan of the Force connection between Kylo and Rey, I didn't feel it was earned and felt that it cheapened the character of Rey in a way - the fact that she felt she could turn him, when his own FATHER could not...

Also not sure if I believed Ren's explanation of Reys' parents, think there is still something there.

I loved Rose and Finn in this.  I know most people said they were their least favorite scenes, for me it was the opposite, I felt real tension as well as chemistry when they were on screen and may have whooped when Finn finally got his revenge on Phasma.

I know there are a lot of Poe/Finn and Rey/Finn shippers out there.  I must say I felt more spark between Poe and Rey in the second they were together than anything between Rey and Finn. (Poe and Finn do have chemistry, but I can unfortunately not see TPTB going that route).  I do like the fledgling relationship between Rose and Finn.

Luke and Leia were great.  I loved their little scene "together".  Did feel strong emotions whenever Carrie Fisher was on screen.  Ep IX is going to be tough.

I do agree with the previous poster that said they don't see how there is any chance for the resistance to conquer in the final part, unless there is a major deus ex machina.  My hope is that there were Rebels on other planets that picked up their signal and are busy getting a massive fleet together (preferably headed by Hera, Jarrus, Ezra or any of the animated heroes) to join this rag tag group, but can't really see that happening...

  3. I really enjoyed this movie.  Difficult to determine where it fits in my Pixar rankings, but definitely one of my favourite movies of the year so far.

As I am from South Africa I know very little about Mexican traditions, Day of the Dead, etc, and found all of that really interesting.  But it was the love of music and the themes of family, forgiveness and acceptance that truly resonated.

My only objection, and this is simply due to currently living with somebody who is in the final stages of Alzheimer's disease, I did not appreciate the depiction of Coco's dementia/memory loss.  I wish it was clear what exactly it entailed.  At some moments it seemed like she could not remember anything, could not speak, could almost not move - very much like later stages of Alzheimer's.  But then when Miguel sings Remember Me, she can suddenly speak clearly and remembers everything as if it just happened?  She knows who everyone is?  Was remembering her dad all she needed to "snap" out of the dementia?  Can I please get that magic song for my mom?

Like I said, this is a small nit to pick, and I'm sure it only bothered me due to the current situation with my mom,  but for me, it kept this really good movie from being great...

Agree.  I'm binging the back half now that Pop has started airing every episode (not just the Doug/Carol years) and even though these episodes are 10, 15, 20 years old I feel like I could be watching them brand new today.  The "When Night Meets Day" episode (S9: E21) is still one of the best produced stand alone episodes of television I've seen.

Definitely.  It has a timeless feel to it.

When Night meets Day is one of my Top 10 episodes of any TV show ever! (Two ER episodes features in said Top 10 - the other being Love's Labour Lost).  It was an astounding episode.  Gripping, always keeping you guessing and leaving you with a gut punch as only ER can...

Oh and I'm still waiting to use "Great! I'm always working when the world ends" at some point in my day job ;-)

  5. My UO is that ER was and remains to this day the best medical show ever put on TV.

They actually featured cases that are common and frequently diagnosed them correctly from the start (here's looking at you HOUSE).  The acting was usually superb and personal drama kept to a minimum (except for the Carby and any "Abby in general" drama).

It still holds up extremely well and I'll put in my dvds of that show quite often as background entertainment while doing other things...

Grey's, HOUSE, Night Shift etc are just nowhere in the same realm for me...

That now makes 2 of the lead cast of Touched by an Angel who've passed on (Roma Downey & Valerie Bertinelli are the survivors). If you remember, Valerie played, like, a new apprentice angel/angel in training named Gloria, who worked with Tess, Monica & Andrew during the last 46 eps/probably the last 2 seasons of the show).

I think I'd have called her Miss or Ms. Reese. Her married name was Lett.

She was an ordained minister; in 1979, after taping an appearance on what was then Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show, she almost died from at least 1 cerebral aneurysm (she was saved by 2 brain surgeries); she also sang the theme song to TBAA.

    Rest in peace Della Reese!

Your post made me go look up who the other death was.  I had no idea John Dye (aka Andrew) had passed away in 2011 from a heart attack.  And so young too!

Dementia at 64?  I didn't know you could get it that young.  Scary.  And so sad.

It really is extremely sad, and very traumatic on the whole family, no matter at what age the disease starts.

My mom was diagnosed with early onset Alzeimer's disease at age 60 (signs started at age 57 already).  She is also 64 at the moment, just like Malcolm Young, and is now in what is known as Stage 7 of Alzheimer's disease (which is the final stage).  Won't go into details here on what that entails, but google it if you are interested in how and why the body just shuts down.

It truly is one of the hardest diseases to live with, for both patient and family.  My deepest sympathy and empathy goes out to Mr Young's family.

  8. Something that I've also noticed on TV is that when somebody goes for a first driving lesson, hijinx will ALWAYS happen.

The person learning to drive will not have any idea how to steer, will ALWAYS speed (I've taught a few people to drive, and speeding is NEVER a worry in the first lesson), will not know where the brake are.  May or may not bump into somebody.

It is never a case of stalling the car a time or two, starting to get the hang of it, and then just crawling around not so busy areas until the person learning to drive is comfortable enough to drive in some traffic.

And let's not even go to when they must learn to drive manual gears.  It always seems like people learning to drive has never even been in a car before and has never observed anything that a driver does...

  9. Loved the ending - Tom Hanks for the win!

But man, the incoherent rambling of the leader of the free world is scary to see when written down like that!

Also, showing all the whataboutism like that was both hilarious and scary!  I live in South Africa so luckily don't have that much exposure to FOX News, but man, they really don't even try, do they?

And that bit on most important show in America, was extremely sad and funny in equal measures...

That drives me crazy. I don't even care if there's blood or not. If someone has clearly been in your house, you don't know if they're still there or not.  Run to a neighbor's if you know them well enough, otherwise get in your car, and call the cops from away from the house.  And, don't go back until the police are there.  Common sense, people.  I can understand it more, of course, if you walk in the door and your son is bleeding out on the floor and nothing is going to stop you from helping him, stupid or not.  But, even then, grab your cell phone and dial 911 as you run across the room.  At least, the police can be on their way if someone jumps out to kill you.

Urgh, yes!  It has happened twice now that I have gotten home and seen obvious signs of break-in as I stepped through the door (I stay in South Africa, so while it is a rare occurrence it is not unheard of).  Both times, I quickly backed out, got in my car, drove a couple of houses down, and called the cops.  Never have I decided to "investigate" on my own.

Another thing that has been mentioned that I completely agree with, is the way (mostly) women react to being mugged/attacked.  Again, it has happened twice that I have been mugged - once whilst standing at a bus stop (phone grabbed out of my hands) and another time as I was walking down the street, somebody stole my handbag from my shoulder.  Both times, I just yelled "stop!" once - out of reflex, but didn't scream my head off.  Also didn't try to attack the guy or try to get my things back from them...  Just went to report it  to the police (well the handbag, the phone I just went to my nearest service provider to block the nr and get a new sim and nr) and continued with my life...  On TV it would be a whole episode of shenanigans...

I also just finished a series on Netflix called Crashing (not the HBO series).  It's from the UK and written and created by the same woman who wrote and created Fleabag. I really hope there is a second series of this show (although it looks unlikely since it came out a year ago with no renewal) because I'm curious about how they're going to write the saga of Fred and Sam.  For those who haven't seen the show, it's about a bunch of people who live in an abandoned hospital as part of some kind of guardianship thing. One of the storylines involves Fred, a gay man, and Sam, a womanizer, who become friends over the course of a party.  Over the six episodes, they showed Sam as increasingly possessive and jealous of Fred's relationship with another man.  Given that his sexual interest was clearly with women, I was wondering if they were  really going to tell the story of a straight man falling for his best friend.  Towards the end, they hinted that Sam may be a frustrated and closeted homosexual but that was mostly from an outside perspective.  I'd be curious to see, if they follow through with the relationship, whether Sam would consider himself an overcompensating closeted gay man, bi or if it'd be a story of a mostly straight man who falls in love with his best friend. I kept expecting the show to have him have a surprise hookup with an engaged women as the last episode twist but they did maintain the through line of the Fred & Sam relationship which was, due to Sam being a dick, complicated at times.

I binged this show a couple of weeks ago, and I would love a second season for this exact  reason.

I never completely bought the "best friends" aspect, as Sam apparently didn't even know Fred's name in that first episode.  I believe Sam is a closeted bi/gay man, whom has over compensated his entire life, because of fear of being rejected by society as a whole.

None of the characters in that show can be described as stable, but Sam especially seemed to have deep rooted abandonment issues and came across as severely depressed when he allowed his vulnerable side to show...

I didn't get polio today! So LIT!!!

This is a topic I'm passionate about, and I just can't with anti-vax people!

Watch somebody suffer from Measles, Polio or any other preventable disease, and tell me again about the hazards of vaccinations!

And the point John mentioned, but I wish he would go a bit further into, is the fact that the time people spend trying to prove a nonexistent link between vaccinations and autism, could and should be spent on trying to find the causes and cure for autism!  Priorities people!!!

  13. Just watched Gifted and Evelyn deserves a mention for:

Forcing Diane to only focus on Math and nothing else her entire life, and then abandoning her when she is pregnant.

Not having any worry or care about Frank (her son) or Mary (her grand daughter) until she finds out that Mary is also a math prodigy

Custody battle for Mary - when Frank has been taking care of her the whole time.  Only focusing on the Math with Mary.

Willing to drop Mary like a hot cake when she finds out Diane did solve the Milennium problem, and she can help defend it.

Just overall a very unlikeable woman who did a major number on Diane (who killed herself) and Frank (who did an amazing job in raising his sister's kid, but who obviously was pretty messed up by his mom as well)

And completely agree with the Ego mention above.  No wonder Star Lord is crazy (he says it himself - That man is his dad!)

  14. I am not in the US, so I have to ask, did anybody see the ads on MSNBC, FOX or CNN?

They were hilarious in the show, but would carry so much more weight/be even funnier, if they were actually allowed to be shown during the morning news shows...

While I'm on that particular rant, one thing that pisses me off to no end is the people who insist they must keep their cell phones on because of an "emergency," the meaning of which has apparently changed dramatically during my lifetime, as it now includes events such as "my boss might call me" or "my realtor/investment broker/random person on the street might call me with important decision to make"  or "my friend said he might call me to go out somewhere."

I agree to a point.  But just as a slight counter, my sister will always keep her phone on and on her lap if she's watching a movie without her oldest son.  The reason being that he is a type 1 diabetic, as well as severely autistic (and many other neurological complications), so she needs to keep her phone with her in case he has a diabetic emergency and the person watching him needs her input asap.  It's only happened a couple of times that she needed to speak to that person (and they/we will always know to only phone if it is a true emergency) - but if that is the case she will get out of her row and speak to the person quietly at the back/outside the theatre.

But like I said, it only happens extremely rarely (especially since it is very rare for her to go to a movie without her son coming along)

PPS. We sometimes need to use our phone's light to see when we test his BG/Give him insulin.  It has happened a few times that somebody would start to look/berate; but as soon as they see the "medical equipment" they keep silent - so we've been lucky in that regard...

  16. Just back from the movie! It was great! Kids are gonna love it, and there is enough there to keep parents entertained, so won't mind going back for repeat viewings... I foresee this one crossing a billion worldwide within just a few weeks of release.

I didn't love it quite as much as The Lego Movie (not as emotionally resonant/slightly more slapstick); but still a solid 7/10 for me...

  17. I just looooved the IV bag clearly marked chemotherapy - and nothing else! No chemical composition names, nothing (at least nothing I could see - those with HD feel free to correct me.

Now chemo IV bags do usually have a small yellow sticker with CAUTION! Chemotherapy on it.  But it is not THAT big.  Also he would have probably received at least 2 more IV bags at the same time - one with saline, one possibly with a dextrose mix, and maybe an antibiotic.  - I am not a doctor, just a PT, but I think that's usually part of the cocktail.  I DO know I've never seen it as just one single IV bag.
