This link is for New York state.  It's the only one like it in the country that I am aware. The reason I say this is that I am active with a site that addresses caregiving and it's a big topic.  Many want to get paid to be inhome caregivers, but, most states do not provide this.  The disabled person has to go into a long term care facility to get the help.  This couple was from Missouri, right?  Maybe, something new has started there.  Let me know if you find out, because, it's a very popular service, but, not one that is available to most.

I am in NY and i didn't realize this was a NY only program. I found this link which breaks down services by state  https://www.payingforseniorcare.com/medicaid-waivers/home-care.html

    black screen of judgement

Funny we should have this discussion now, LB Bonner, who will be a participant this season said about an hour ago on Facebook "those numbers aren't correct, well at least not for everyone, but No they don't cover medical expenses and what not, what ever my insurance didn't cover I'm on the hook for"  He further implied that the show pays $2500 for moving expenses and $1500 for the rights to their story.  Past participants have stated that the reason why they go on this show is to cut to the front of the line for Dr Now, otherwise it could take years to get an appointment with him.

I guess my source was misinformed then!

I dunno about that.  I have heard that the show doesn't even pay for the surgery, the person's insurance does.  Skin surgery is thousands and thousands of dollars and generally isn't covered by insurance, the rare exception is the surgery to remove the apron (there's a name for it) because that extra skin can cause infections.  Removing lymphedema tumors also doesn't technically count as elective plastic surgery.

I heard this from someone who knew someone that was featured on this show and she said the show paid for the surgery. That's how they get them to be on the show and expose themselves to so much humiliation.

Oh, yes...absolutely, with the front tooth taken care of, Rene would be able to really take advantage of many opportunities that probably wouldn't be available to her with her dental situation.  How about the LOOSE SKIN SURGERY for her sagging belly???  Arms???  Whatever other body parts that would definitely need surgical intervention.  Remember they had that other show "Skin Tight" that they tacked onto "600?"  I thought maybe the participants got that surgery donated for the surgeon's exposure on national TV.

I think if Rene took care of these issues and finally achieved an appearance and outlook that make her feel "normal" (whatever that is...)  LOL, she might pursue some sort of career.  That would be great except she would probably lose her disability (and medicaid) that I assume she and Lee receive now.

The skin removal surgery is usually part of the package on this show, although often not in the first year.  Probably in the 2 year followup.  And I believe it is all paid for by the show.

  5. My son and I were wondering about the friend who came with them to Houston and what his motivation was.  My son said he must be a saint.  Someone on the Live Chat thread (I was just reading it now) said he is probably being paid to be their caregiver and a light bulb went off.  There is a program through Medicaid called CDPAP where you can be paid to be the caregiver of a friend or family member:

This show must be the new 'Teen Mom' on Steroids!!!

The original show that ended up spinning off into Teen Mom was "16 and Pregnant" and was actually a very good and realistic documentary style program.  Unfortunately, MTV chose some of the girls featured in this show to be on Teen Mom and the rest is history.  This show is actually pretty similar to "16 and Pregnant."

Your first comment is a really awful thing to say about any women wanting kids. She can still have kids, its just harder to get pregnant. All of us know women who have had children over the age of 35. She isn't in her 40s yet.

I had my first at 34 and my second at 38.  No issues at all!  36 is not old at all!

What town is Kim from? I thought i heard them say Whoville.

They are from Riverhead.  It's on Long Island (NY).  Kind of a working class area not far from the Hamptons and North Fork wine country.  I have noticed that her lips and chin area are very swollen.  Could be some medical issue.

I think they were pulling a joke on the grandpa about the cost of the dress. I can't remember what they paid though.

Yes, it was a joke.  It was more like $75 or $100.  They were just trying to see if he would fall for it and then they were laughing about it.

Last we have Lilly, whose mom said she was a teen mom also. Hmm, she looks a bit long in the tooth if that's the case, or maybe she just didn't age well.

I wondered about that as well so looked them up.  Lilly's mom is in her 40's but had her first child as a teenager.

  11. My 13 year old son had seen a You Tube video promoting this show with the 31 year old grandmother to be!  He said "Does this run in the family or something?  What is WRONG with these people!?"  LOL.  But seriously.  Also, the 31 year old Grandma looked way older than 31.  What happened to her?  I thought the grandpa singing "You are my Sunshine" to his pregnant granddaughter really touching.

ETA: how does one request that a new forum be created? I searched the FAQ and I can't find anything. There needs to be a forum for the craptastic show that followed 90DF, Unexpected. It's about a bunch of stupid teens who have babies.

Go to the main page, then info.  Click on New Show Forum Requests.  It has been requested, already but you can comment (i did) http://forums.previously.tv/forum/166-new-show-forum-requests/

I'm fairly fluent in French, and damned if I could understand a word Mother Abby was saying.

Google tells me Haitian French is quite similar to Parisian French, but that's like nothing I ever heard in France.

There is a large Haitian community in my town, so much so that all the school documents are translated into both Spanish and Creole.  Creole is very different than French.

IIRC, I think that you are confusing two different shows.  The woman and her husband who were searching for the child they conceived when they were in their teens;  she joined the military, had a child with a black man, then came back home and got back together with father of first born and they had kids together.  Not sure how many kids but two different fathers and all the kids that were kept were younger that the one adopted out.

Abbi was a different episode.  Mom has died, grandma and sisters were looking.  UsernameFatigue correctly described the family above.

I could be wrong but that is what I remember.

Yes, Megan was the one with the mixed race half sister.  The parents had Megan, gave her up for adoption, then mom had another daughter with someone else and kept her (the mixed race girl obviously), later reconnected with Megan's father, married him and had two more kids, a boy and girl.  Abbi's mother is the one who had babies by three different men.  She had a daughter already (the red haired girl), got pregnant again and couldn't afford to keep the baby (Abbi, though they had called her April) and gave her up for adoption.  Later, married and had three more kids though we only met one girl.  She died when the kids were young in a car accident and grandma had gotten custody of them all and had been looking for Abbi.

The pop up said Sean was working on getting his GED. What? Did Mommie Dearest pull him out of high school too? What else has she ruined for him?

Yes I recall from the original episode that the falling down the stairs accident happened while he was in high school so he never graduated

The show doesn't pay for the surgery.  Medicare does.  The show gives them nothing other than a small amount for the move, like $1500 or $2500.

I have a friend who knows someone that was featured on this show and she said that the show paid for her surgery.  That's part of the deal and why people sign up to be on the show

Did Nicole say at one point "I don't want my kids to have to bury me wearing a diaper."???? Was she wearing a diaper because she couldn't get in the bathroom? I haven't been this horrified since the last horrible episode of this show 2 weeks ago.

She meant she didn't want to be buried when her kids were still in diapers, not her in a diaper!

The article that Hannah wrote, I feel like a gossip magazine or a tabloid would publish that and not a newspaper.

The article was for the Modern Love feature in the Sunday New York Times Style section. I read it every week and actually I thought it was very fitting!
