I have serious, honest, no-snark questions. Why are people online are calling the movie "woke?" Is it because it has a diverse cast of characters? It is because the lead character is a young woman? Is it because there is tension between the parent who wants the kid to follow the older tradition and the kid who wants to do things thier own way?

I am not a troll trying to start an argument or win internet points. I am someone who is genuinely confused. Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions.

I agree and would go much further. Here is a list of Disney portagonists/main characters (including Pixar) who disobyed thier parents/parental figure. This list is far from complete:

    • Cinderella snuck out to the ball after her stepmother told her not to go.
    • Ariel and Luca went up to the surface to learn about people despite parent(s) telling them not to
    • Simba went to the elephant graveyard even though it was off limits
    • Mulan snuck off to join the army
    • Pocahontas snuck away to see John Smith
    • Nemo swims out further than he is supposed to
    • Remi spends time with people inside
    • Coco secretly plays music and sings

Disobeying parents isn't a "woke" thing. It isn't even a Disney thing. Maybe it's like The Princess Bride, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

I think it’s mainly just because of the period stuff. I think that still makes a lot of people very uncomfortable for whatever bizarre reason.

I guess everyone's forgotten about Brave. You know, where Merida drugged her mother and turned her into a bear in order to get out of the expectations put on her?

Brave and Turning Red have about an equal audience tomato-meter so maybe they haven’t?

WOCB say that Jana plead guilty because she had already had already posted a "confession" and couldn't plead not guilty after doing that. I don't know if that's the case, but I do think she'd be in a difficult position and had to go in front of a judge and explain why the first words out of her mouth were a lie.

I don’t think this part is accurate. The Dailymail had her already accepting a plea deal the day after the news broke. They claimed they spoke to a court clerk so I would think they were accurate. Jana posted her “confession” much later.

I don’t recall JB being present. They were at a thrift shop, Jackson played a musical toy and moved his body to the music. A producer (jerk) told Jana, who did go to the child, and shyly said the kid was full of the spirit, or some other nonsense. I do recall Michelle holding one of the lost girls (1 or under) who was moving to music in an Indian restaurant.

I think this is the incident and you’re right JB doesn’t turn it off and the producer is kind of a jerk. Can’t tell which one of the older boys did turn off the music.

The only thing I got is that David Waller is the pastor of the Spiveys' church, which isn't really that much.

He was only there the day that is brother testified. I think that might also be the case for Justin and the Spiveys. It’s possible they were all just there to support Matthew Waller. Based on what was written about his testimony, he did come across as nervous so he might have needed the support.

Or leaves the courthouse with a big grin on their face like they've just left a sports arena after their team won.  I don't know which Duggar or Duggar related hanger on was pictured upthread doing that but knowing now what was shown and discussed makes that picture even more repugnant.

Listen I get it that they may genuinely believe Smuggar is not guilty - but that doesn't change the nature of the crime he is accused of, or the content of the imagery.  Anyone truly innocent or truly supportive of someone they feel has been unfairly charged should be absolutely heartsick and horrified over this not acting like it's a big joke.

Not to defend the photo which was bizarre and immature but it was taken prior to the CSAM photos being shown and discussed. Reddit seems to think Justin and company left for good after that photo of Justin was taken so they didn’t stay to hear any of the actual horrible things Josh did.

There's Milo from the Atlantis movie; Carl from Pixar's Up; any other bespectacled lead characters in Disney animation?

The forgotten mid-2000s movies had Chicken Little and Lewis in Meet the Robinsons. Watched both of them for the first time with my toddler kids and they are actually kind of charming movies.

Edna Mode also has glasses and she should be a lead!

I don't think this wins her any kind of award. Every (normal) mother I know feels pretty much the same.

I don’t know, does Michelle? That is Jessa’s example of what a mother should be. So I will give her some credit there. Granted Michelle might have been better when she just had three kids but it seems like she only ever cared about tiny babies.

Because the word Easter is derived from an ancient goddess of fertility, Eostre.  There was a pagan springtime celebration of new life which the Christian celebration of Christ's resurrection superceded, while adopting the name.  Fundies don't like the idea of the celebration of Christ's resurrection from the dead being connected to a pagan god.

Same reason many don't celebrate traditional Christmas with trees since those originated as a pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice.  They're ok with calling it Christmas for obvious reasons, but many do not exchange gifts or decorate, other than with a nativity scene and their kids don't wait up for Santa because all that magical stuff like elves and flying reindeers is of the devil, of course.

I can get not wanting to call the holiday Easter but why don’t they just call it Pascha ( or some variant) like virtually all non-English speaking Christians do?

Not asking you specifically, but it seems odd given Pascha ties into the Old Testament which fundies tend to focus on more so than other Christian groups.

  10. I could be remembering this wrong but I thought there were some even older marquees during that scene. I assumed they were the actual ghosts of NY's past.

  11. I couldn't buy Adam Driver in Star Wars as the son of

    Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher

. He's too unique looking to be cast as anyone's child.

I also had a hard time with Leonardo Dicaprio and Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York - they did not look or sound (emphasis on sound) like poor turn of the century Irish immigrants.

  12. Adam Driver is ugly. Am I the only one who sees that? That he's being treated like a hunk is baffling.

I found him totally distracting in the new Star Wars movie for this reason. He was so unbelievable as the child of

    Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher

    .

  13. Progress does not march in a straight line. The age of first marriage in England for MEN during the seventeenth century was somewhat higher than it was in 1950, and I don't think you could say that at that time people worried about succubi stealing men's essence in either era. However, in the seventeenth century it was quite common for girls to marry at age 15. They were expected to be virgins. Men, who often married for the first time at thirty or older, were not. I don't think in 1950 people were marrying much younger than age 15, in England.

If this article , and a number of other scholarly works, is to be believed - it wasn't just men who were marrying slightly older in England during the seventeenth century.

  14. Since premarital sex, masturbation, and any sort of experimentation before marriage was looked upon with horror, and in some cultures considered an open invitation to demonic possession, marriage was accomplished as young as possible. In parts of the world where people marry extremely young, one will often still find those superstitions alive and well.

This isn't all that true - a number of factors seem to have affected the age of first marriage at various points in history across all cultures. For example, the age of first marriage in England was possibly higher during parts of the 17th century than it was in 1950. The age of first marriage in the USA was also much younger in 1970 than in 1890 which you wouldn't expect if it was all based on cultural mores.

Are we to believe that Stannis was deliberately sold a contaminated doll?  That reminds me of US soldiers giving small pox          contaminated blankets to Native Americans.  Stannis wasn't king or even trying to be at the time.  Why attempt to kill his baby?

I didn't interpret it as something that was deliberate. I don't see germ theory being common knowledge in the GoT universe.

  16. Well, Patrick has done that "show emotion without saying a word" REALLY well from Day One. His eyes get watery on command and he does this thing with his eyebrows that can convey anger, guilt, vulnerability, exhaustion or lust in those baby blues with little effort.

Another thing, I saw a few minutes of that 80's teen rom-com "Cant Buy Me Love" one day recently. So bad. Anyway, do you think he's had a nose job? Not only was his hair in geek form back then, but he seemed to have a much longer nose. Who knew that kid on the lawn mower would have "sex symbol" next to his name for a show that's run 11 years now.

I always thought he had a nose job - it also looks a lot narrower at the tip then it used to.

  17. Lots of kids in our neighborhood go to a Catholic school. They are normal kids. Their school doesn't make a difference. Some are mean, some are not.  Not all religious people are good people.

Not all kids who attend Christian schools are particularly religious either, especially once you get to the high school level.
