Chocolate cake for the final signature challenge seemed a bit easy but I'm okay with giving the bakers a more open ended challenge that gives them more choices so that they can do something really awesome and creative (rather than being bogged down by a lot of nitpicky required elements).

True but I think a chocolate cake for a signature was just too boring for the finale.

    Well. That was anti-climactic.

I'd called David as a frontrunner in Episode 1 and believe he was the clear winner on the day. I'm really not surprised. But, I think this is the first bake off season where we've had a winner who wasn't a flavor king/queen.

Her reaction to the parental thing sounded a bit off to me, though. She said something like "this is the worst thing that could happen" and I was like...really?

    That took me aback too.

Wow, I wish this recipe said that.   There were LOADS of unripe mangoes.   Sadly "2 ripe alphonso mangoes (about 500g), peeled, destoned and diced" is the instruction I was given.  And it did seem a shame to waste such a perfectly ripe mango.  If I do another mango chutney (and I will) I'm totally going to give the unripe mango a whirl.

All the FDA import restrictions mean that you guys don't get the good ones. Ripe mangoes are sweet, unripe mangoes are sour. Not sure they can be substituted for each other.

    Yay, bread!

I'm not a fan of people using charcoal in food willynilly. It absorbs what's in your stomach so you shouldn't eat something with charcoal within a few hours of any medications. Unfortunately, people just like using it to make things dark so now we have black smoothies and black ice cream and black bread. Anyway, Henry's checkerboard chicken and pesto brioche bread with black olives and sesame seeds looked okay, but compared to some of the other tear and share breads, it seemed very simple looking.

Charcoal just doesn't seem appetizing to me and I can't tmagine it tastes good. I don't get this trend at all.

Eh, it doesn't bother me. I have long hair and in all the years that I've been cooking and baking, no one has ever found a hair in the food I've made.

My mom has cooked with open hair all her life. I don't get the fuss.

What a strange week. This is the first time I've really paid any heed to the griping that this crop of bakers isn't skilled enough, because when they can't nail tart crust?

I thought all of the showstoppers looked kind of cool, even Henry's pie stack, but I don't understand how they all wound up so dry. It's still just pie, y'all.

I'm in line with the people thinking David should've got star baker.  No one was really exceptional, but he had an okay signature, won the technical challenge, and his showstopper was more impressive looking than Steph's, even if it had salty filling. I've said before that I don't care much about who wins week to week, but in a week like this there's just no reason to plump for Steph who already has three titles over David who has none.

    Who's Adam Hills?

You can't win Star Baker if your bakes didn't taste well.

That doesn't mean Henry was entitled to an answer. In general, I've seen that the judges in general have generally avoided saying things from the sideline during challenges, as distinct from their up-close conferences once in each challenge. I don't see it as "being a dick" at all. (Paul can be a dick in other situations, for other reasons.)

Henry was my favorite from the start, and his remarks each week have gone into my book of favorite GBBO sayings (along with those of Glenn Cosby). I wanted him to go to the end. But he flat-out had a bad week, and at a point when his Showstopper could have redeemed him, he made one that tasted no better than any of the others, poorly baked and devoid of imagination. He had to go.

I thought it was unfair of Henry to ask and Paul shouldn't have answered. Henry, while cooking a meat pie and deciding how much meat to put in it asked a judge whether like a lot of meat or not. Of course Paul shouldn't have answered, and in making a game of it, I thought Paul handled that rather gracefully.

I wish more bakers had done better in the showstopper. I assume they were so afraid of getting soggy pastry that they went in the opposite direction.

I think this is almost the first time this has happened. I remember previous seasons where the concern was about a soggy bottom but for the most part the pies actually had them or didn't. This was the first time I saw so many dings for being too dry.

In past seasons the bakers were shown having a deep love of baking in their personal lives - baking in their college dorms, baking from a very young age, etc. This year I haven't really seen that being shown. And I've noticed they complain a lot about what they have to do. I remember Ruby saying once something like no one looks forward to the technical and I thought then it was pretty bold statement. But this year all the contestants are saying things like that constantly.

I think you nailed why I don't like the crop that much - they all seem to be complaining too much about things. It's hot, technical challenges are terrible, Paul is mean, the tent is very stressful...too much whinging. Only David seems cool.

I think if it matters that much it should have been specified in the instructions.

I assume they thought that the very fact that they said pie it was implied, especially if it is standard in Britain. And part of the challenge would be to ensures these expert bakers know what a pie is supposed to be?

    2) Noel - I LOVE Noel but something is off in his interactions with the bakers. His remarks seem forced and the bakers seem annoyed with him. For this I blame the producers.

I blame the participants. Maybe it's the timing, but if feels like for some of them the hosts are like a chore they have to do, a necessary part of GBBO rather than people they enjoy.

This is the first season to be broadcast in the US as it happens, so I'm wondering about how much say Netflix has in casting. US reality shows usually have a cast that leans toward young, I really hope they aren't going to start casting this show to appeal to US audiences. One of the things that makes this show great is that they don't do young & "types" casting.

Hmm. Netflix have defanged Black Mirror quite a lot so this could be possible. I do still support them because of Sense8 but some of their efforts to commercialize has been really, really frustrating.

I completely agree. I think this group as a whole is delightful. Watching Rahul was so depressing!

I actually quite enjoyed Rahul, he was humble and making fun of himself. I didn't think he looked depressed just that he was concentrating hard on something and focused. I definitely prefer that look to someone like Alice this year who is trying So! Hard! To! Smile! while being completely stressed out. Smiling though gritted teeth almost and I kept feeling sorry for her because sure that must have made things even more stressful.

I’m shocked at how many of the bakers didn’t know choux or sabayon. These are not obscure things. This really does seem like an unqualified group this year. This would seem to support my thought they were cast for their youth and looks, not Baking skill!

Nothing has wowed me, and apart from that one perfect cake (which didn't sound all that perfect), nothing seems to have wowed the judges as well. The flavors haven't sounded particular interesting as well.

I had no idea what Mishtis are, and I still don't. This is where I REALLY miss how the old show would do a short piece on the origin and history of the bake.

These are small, balls/ovals/different shapes made from sweet cottage cheese or sweetened condensed milk, as shown. They are Bengali desserts. These are usually supposed to be small enough to be mouthfuls, or 2 mouthfuls at most, so I was surprised at how large some of them were.

Those milk sweets didn't appeal to me at all, and as a whole, I thought the choice of dairy as a theme was underwhelming. I don't think I'd be queuing up to eat anything that they made this week.

The recipe they showed made it seem almost like they are making one particular type of mishti called Kalakand / milk cake. It really is delicious without need any additional flavoring. It was interesting that none of the contestants chose to make a traditional one.

Mishi doi is sweet yoghurt so technically it isn't a 'mishti'.

If Phil had done better, then I think they probably would have opted to send both of the other two home. But he didn't. It was a bunch of stamped, multicoloured sweets and a plastic garden gnome.

I was surprised no one dinged him for the gnome. Usually they don't like non edible elements in the presentation (except cocktail umbrellas).

I love Henry's sense of humor. In the bread ep, I cracked up at the way he said, "Bread can take a hike." And then his comment about his ice cream thing maybe being eaten in prison was funny and self-deprecating.

The thing is, he was making kulfi, not ice-cream. Don't know why he kept calling it ice-cream. (One of the things kulfi doesn't have is that freezing thing that ice-cream has, for example - is that gelatin?). They are different beasts. I think he'd have done better if he's made them smaller / put lesser amount in the molds (moulds). He was also using the wrong molds, it felt like. When my mum makes them she puts them in aluminum cases. Plastic would hold the heat in, I'd have thought.

    On 9/24/2019 at 3:11 AM, meep.meep said:

They got four hours - plenty of time to have an ice cream set up.  If he made it first and put it in, and left it alone, it should have been fine.

Well to make kulfi one has to first boil the milk to make sweetened condensed milk which then has to be frozen, therefore I can understand it taking some time. I also wonder if maybe the mixture wasn't thick enough - if it is too runny it takes some time to freeze as well.

All this from my childhood spent watching my mom slave over the stove making her famous kulfi.

One question - is it just me, or has Paul been handing out handshakes way more than he used to?

I remember remarking on this in the first season with the changes, but because Prue isn't as sweet as Mary, it felt to me like Paul had to be almost nicer because otherwise the atmosphere would be a little too negative and non Bakeoff like.

Also, is it me or does the cast feel less diverse this year? Maybe I'm being paranoid.

  10. Not sure why there's a thought that the episode didn't address the fact that the PM and the beast were being raped. I thought that's where the horror came from - not from doing a heinous act, but from being forced to do it, and being watched while doing it.

The fact that the pig had to be sedated also shows that the writers were being clear about how horrific the act was that everyone was rubber necking about.

You have to remember that Wakanda never had the awful legacy of the slave trade and European colonialism that other African nations experienced.  So, they were able to create their own society, on their own terms, without the backdrop of European influences. The United States is the only former colony that has thrived, due to adopting imperialist ambitions of their former colonizer England.

That is all a front to keep European powers out. They pretend to be a poor, third world country with nothing to offer to the world.  I am pretty sure where the border tribe lives, they have access to Wakandan technology.

Actually the US is one of the worst hit (along with Australia) where the native, indigenous cultures were almost wiped out. A lot of them managed to hang on to their native cultures.

I agree that there should have been more development for Sharon. Blame the Russos for completely shoehorning Black Widow as the female lead in Winter Soldier when it would have made more sense (and faithful to comics) for Sharon to be the female lead. Then people wouldn't just dismiss her as only a love interest.

But yeah it would have been awesome to have a scene of the two of them at the beginning of Infinity War. Hell,I wish she was Infinity War, we need more women there. But you never know, there's still a sequel coming...

Well I'm glad that the Russos didn't because one of my favorite aspects of The Winter Soldier is the effortless, platonic chemistry between Cap and Black Widow.

Also not a major fan of Emily van Camp I must say - she always looks incredibly smug to me for some reason.

Sion's story has been breaking my heart - all aspects. But I think the girl has been a little willfully blind too. Not that that means she deserves it in any way.
