  1. Did anyone call Dean after seeing this episode?  ;-)  From imdb:

Early on in the series, Dean's cell number is given, and for a while the studio had it set up so that anyone dialing the number would hear Jensen Ackles reading the message: "This is Dean Winchester. If this is an emergency, leave a message. If you are calling about 11-2-83, page me with your coordinates." The number is 1-866-907-3235. This number now leads to a fax machine, but it is not known where that fax machine ends up.

The syndicated phone number is different (just watched it on TNT), but is it the same on the dvd?  (I'm too lazy to get up and check right now.)

  3. Discussion of Hannibal as anti-hero carried over from character thread:

I have never considered Hannibal an anti-hero, even after the events of Hannibal Rising.  The murders he commits in that book have a certain justification -- even self defense at least once -- but they are in no way heroic, IMO.  For example, he doesn't care about the prostitutes on the boat when he kills Grutas.  He doesn't know how many people are on the boat when he rigs it to blow up, and frankly doesn't care.

I think the movie version of Hannibal created the idea of Hannibal as anti-hero (or at least greatly contributed to it).  Apart from rooting for Hannibal to escape from Mason (and rescue Clarice in the process), the movie ending created a situation that didn't occur in the book.

I know many people did not like the book ending, but it never wavered from the idea that Hannibal was brainwashing Clarice and he might kill her at some point -- he even told her as much.  In the movie, however, Hannibal sacrificed his own hand to escape.

Yeah, that would never happen, IMO.  It suggests that Hannibal cared more about keeping Clarice safe and whole over his own self-preservation.  Clarice is safe (from Hannibal) as long as Mischa cannot take her place, but if Hannibal could find a way to do it (to make the teacup whole again), he would kill Clarice without hesitation, IMO.

So the movie gave a us a Hannibal who is trying to survive against a more sadistic character; who kills a deplorable man who is actively trying to sabotage Clarice's career; who sacrifices himself instead of harming the woman he may love ("That's my girl.") -- almost textbook anti-hero.

    But mileage varies.

  4. Yeah, I'm not happy that 11 out of the 16 contestants are in their 20's -- and 6 of those are 25 or younger.  I hope Face Off isn't starting to lean away from talent and more towards young, beautiful people.  Not that they won't be talented because they're young, but how much experience can they have?

Prove me wrong, show, prove me wrong!

  5. Bryan Callen?  He's marginally funny, but he also kind of creeps me out.  Can't explain it.

Looking forward to David Wain and Michael Showalter -- with any luck, he won't say "I'm outta here!" this time.

  7. But Soulless Sam had Sam's memories.

Did he?  Huh.  I don't remember that at all.

Oh no!  Did I become a demon at some point and have no memory of it?!?!  ;-)

    ETA

But Dean died.  Really most sincerely dead.  Where did Dean's soul go?

Honestly?  No clue.  Stuck in the Veil with Kevin's, I suppose.

  8. I can't imagine the show doing that.  Unless Demon Dean is Soulless Sam all over again.  Literally.  *sigh*

Have I mentioned I hate Demon Dean, even though we have no idea what that means yet?  He won't be 100% Dean because, otherwise, what was the point in making him a demon?  They have to change him in some way and I'm so not looking forward to that.

  10. Dean would have to actually kill people for his need to be satisfied--granted he could have tried to only kill "evil" things

I swear, if they try to turn him into Demon Edward Cullen (instead of vampire), I just might be done with this show....

For clarification, if Demon Dean kills monsters and other demons because it's who he is, it's what he does, that's okay.  But if he does it because he "needs" to kill, IMO, that strays a little too close to "I need blood to survive, but I only drink from bad guys."

ETA  Still not sure I made myself clear.  What I'm concerned about is the possibility that Demon Dean doesn't care about hunting monsters or evil.  But he "needs" to kill, so Sam and Castiel convince him to kill monsters and demons to satiate his desire.  It's a fine distinction, I know, but an important one to me because it speaks to Dean's characterization.

IOW, I want Dean to stay Dean, demon or not.

  11. https://twitter.com/StephenKing/status/476431669139111936

Mr. Mercedes part one of a trilogy -- spoilers in link about which characters survive and go on to the next novel.

I must say, I'm disappointed.  I suppose the ending is supposed to be all "Dun dun DUN!!!", but I couldn't help but think,

"He's awake, so what?  He's going to jail, considering how much plastic explosive he had in his possession, not to mention the evidence on his computer and the fact that he killed his mother."

To paraphrase Annie Wilkes, Mr. King better not give us a cheat.

  12. I'm not particularly fond of the main character, either.  He makes some common cop mistakes.  Just to be safe:

And either doesn't realize his mistakes -- or does but never tries to right them.  Like, he figures out that he's been unfair to the woman who owned the Mercedes, wanting to blame her (perhaps because they can't find the killer), but when he learns that it wasn't her fault at all, he doesn't tell his ex-partner.  Coward.

  13. So, I think the intention of the episode was that it was the future and not some construct of Zachariah's. However, just because those yahoos say something, doesn't mean it's actually true.

The other problem with this show and listening to the producers/writers/showrunners is that they change their minds.  What was originally intended is changed so often that most of the time, I'm not sure what we're supposed to believe.  See the above discussion about Kripke and Gamble.  Not to mention how things changed as a result of the writers' strike and the renewal for season 6.  Which is why...

So much of this show has to viewed by one's own experiences and taken as an individual interpretation, IMO.

    ITA with this.

ETA  I forgot to mention that they also make mistakes.  They forget things.  They contradict themselves.  It happens.  *shrug*
