Denis Ten won the bronze last time! What happened over the past four years? Shocked he didn't qualify.

The commentators on the livestream said he’s been dealing with various injuries all season. And he’s been wildly inconsistent since the Sochi Games.

You know I watch Aliona and Robin as well as V/M and remember Boitano, Kwan and Lipinski and can't help but feel that for whatever reason the American skating team except for maybe Nathan Chen just doesn't have that fierce competitiveness that I think is a requirement to get on the podium. Now maybe this is not all bad -- we don;t want Tonya Harding v. 2.0. But would Lebron James or Steph Curry be "cool" just to make the playoffs, or Tom Brady be "cool" with winning division championship? Would Simone Biles have been happy "just to experience the Olympics"? I really wish more of that competitive fire was there.

H/D and the Shibs seem hungry for it. And after the team event, I think Mirai is now too—even if she’s an extreme long shot for bronze at best in the that field of competitors.

  3. I tried watching Olympic Ice just , and I can’t do it! I miss the low-rent fun of Torino. I need Tamara Moskvina and Mary Carillo and the rest of the gang. This current version is too serious. They need to pair Tanith with someone younger (sorry, Scott Hamilton!) and get a host with more and better feigned interest—if they need a non-skating person to host.

Dave Lease?  I'm going to have to check this guy out, now that I've read the article.  He sounds great (if controversial).

The overall sensibility of this and the regular figure skating forum here are pretty similar to what Dave does over on The Skating Lesson. The videos are sometimes way too long to watch in one go and leave much to be desired in both audio and visual quality, but he and the current cohost and various guests come at it from a place of genuine figure skating fandom.

The commentators just said this is Savchenko's FIFTH Olympics? That's amazing. Shame that she'll likely miss out on gold again, barring mistakes from the Russians or Chinese.

Tarasova and Morozov have made mistakes in the long this season. And their LP this season really doesn’t fit them, stylistically. I’d give the edge to Sui and Han, with Savchenko and Massot in second (barring some kind of miracle, which I’ll be praying for).

Marcheii and Hotarek are so entertaining.

I didn’t get on board with them while watching Europeans last month, but they’ve really won me over this past week. They are such great performers inbetween all of the required elements. Not a moment is wasted.

Regarding Ashley. Would the US have finished higher in the team event -- i.e. silver, had they chosen her over Bradie? Bradie is new, and as we all know in figure skating, the rule is that if you're new and not an Olympic Athlete From Russia, you won't get scored very high. Ashley may have placed higher than Bradie in the ladies' event. Not sure if that would have made a difference though.

I wouldn’t think so. Even if Ashley was scoring at Worlds ‘16 level, she’d still have placed third in this field of competitors. 2 more points for the US in the standings, but still 2 points behind the OAR team.  Her typical SP scores the past couple of seasons, excluding nationals because those are inflated for many skaters, generally no better than what Bradie did here.

"Hey, you know what would be a great idea for a dance?  If you were blind!  That'll tug at everyone's heartstrings!"  I'm rolling my eyes so hard I can see into the past.

Of all the current Russian skaters, they do ACTING the best, IMO.

What are the odds of Patrick staying upright? He has always been known for falling while racking up points. Patrick’s biggest asset appears to be getting in 4 rotations before he falls. He’s also had a rough season and a rough short program. He should be very beatable here.

I asked up thread, but does anyone know why Canada is not subbing him out? They appear to be using only 1 substitution.

Their second guy, Keegan Messing, while extremely personable on the ice, isn’t in the same technical league as Patrick. According to the numbers in their Wiki profiles, Keegan’s best LP score this season is only slightly better than Patrick’s worst. Plus Patrick has the previous Olympic experience, and the judges do love to shower him with those PCS points. Since Canada has a legit shot at the gold, I can see them wanting a less-than-great Patrick since his scoring potential is higher.

It could end up close between US and Italians for bronze, it really comes down to men. Carolina should get a few points on Mirai and Shibs a point or two over C/L, if Rizzo skates out of his mind and beats Adam, they could win bronze.

I’m more concerned about Mirai than Adam. Matteo doesn’t yet have a quad in his LP, I don’t think, and his personal best in the long is still about 30 points behind Adam’s. Also, Keiji’s personal best is about 10 points behind Adam’s, and he’s not been delivering totally clean LPs this season. If Mikhail and Patrick both manage to stay upright, and Adam doesn’t choke, I could see Adam placing third behind them. Going by personal bests in the women’s field, Mirai on her best day is still 10 points Carolina, Kaori, and Gabby on theirs. Alina is in a class of her own, points-wise.

I am so sick of backloading.  SO sick of it.  Johnny mentioned her saving all her jumps for the second half like it's some kind of clever and wonderful idea.  I'd say take your tech points, fine, but your PCS should take a hit since it's not a balanced program.

Also, Med is good, very good and amazingly consistent.  But I'm still not totally sure she is the Second Coming of ladies' skating.  Maybe I'm mean, but I would be so behind something happening to shake up the expected 1-2 finish by Med and Zag (in whatever order).  That would shut up Johnny's Russophile gushing for a while.

The thing for me, more than the 100% backloading, is the “more is better” philosophy Eteri and her team take to building these incredibly busy programs. No position is held long enough or given time to really breathe, because there are yet more features and difficult variations to do. It’s a problem for many skaters now, but it’s something I really notice with Medvedeva and Zagitova.
