  1. With Larry and Polly kinda out of the picture in terms of non-felons screen-time (although I like Polly and hope she makes a return), I'm hoping the show won't shy further and further from showing life on the outside in S4 - in real time I mean, not just flashbacks. I do like Cal and I really hope he and Neri continue to consistently show up, be it as part of a phone call or visitation.

I like Polly too! Hope we'll see her in S4

Yes! I was so glad when Bennett took off. I just never bought how passing little notes and him seeing her once in a bra led to some deep, abiding, true love. Meh. Bennett leaving was the best thing to happen because it led to all kinds of complicated weirdness surrounding Mrs. Pornstache and the adoption and eventually the DEA grabbing the baby (which I guess means La Famille Pornstache will soon learn the baby did not die.) As crazy as all that was, it was still more believable than "John I LOVE you. I want to spend the rest of my LIFE with you." Pout.

    My favourites:

Like everyone, I agree that the Boo/Pennsatucky storyline was full of amazing. Even when she was horrible during season 1, I thought Taryn Manning was brilliant, and she just keeps on getting better. She is so heartbreakingly real and genuine when you realise nobody had ever, in her entire life, made it clear that rape is wrong, or that none of the guys who used her for sex had ever bothered about HER feelings until her one hot boyfriend came along. She portrays this combination of high intelligence and self-awareness that her upbringing did its best to squash, but didn't quite make it.

I liked that Suzanne was given a lighter storyline this season. It was painful to watch her be victimised by Vee in the second season. I loved that she apologised to Poussey for beating her up, and that Poussey became her first and most ardent literary fan. The confrontation with Healy had me rolling. And I hope that she finally finds her own quirky love with the cute pixie-faced girl. The two of them giggling in the lake together was heartwarming. Suzanne deserves some real happiness.

Gloria, Gloria, Gloria! I adore her!  Selenis Leyva is another one of my favorite actors on the show (along with Taryn Manning Uzo Aduba.) For all of her bravado, she is determinedly straight-laced and a wonderful "mother" to her "girls". She can be equally heartbreaking (her frustration and sadness over her son) and hilarious (it may have been season 2 when Sophia was doing her hair and encouraged her to get something that was more edgy and terrifying and she said "I try to do that with my face.") She's amazing at conveying intense fear and rage at the same time. I loved her verbal smack down of Piper in the final episode, and her defence of Flaca.

I liked Black Cindy's conversion, even if it rang a little untrue. Her meeting with the rabbi and the Jewish inmates was worth it. Someone upthread said that overall the black girls had the best story lines and actors, and I agree. Poussey, Suzanne, Taystee, Jenae and Cindy are all terrific in their moments and I always find myself  way more interested, especially this season, when they are on the screen. Poussey has one of the strongest characters in Litchfield--nothing leads her astray from her moral convictions. Time and again she's proven that she's pretty much the only one there that will insist on what she believes is right, including rescuing poor Brook and convincing the other girls to accept her into their group.

The Norma cult was stupid. Everything involving Piper, Alex and Stella was insufferable and the only reason I didn't fast forward through the panty business scenes was because of Cal and his wife, who are hysterical. Otherwise that whole thing was just nonsensical and was supposed to prove…what? That Piper is a badass all of the sudden? The Alex/Piper/love/hate/love/hate was exhausting and i did not get the motivation for any of it. They were behaving like lunatics with very, very selective amnesia. Sorry, I don't buy the whole "but the LUST is so STRONG" because I am an adult over 30. Okay over 40.

Loved Gloria this season. One of the best written charachters

  2. I found this article  http://www.criminalelement.com/blogs/2014/07/orange-is-the-new-black-season-2-episode-10-little-mustachioed-shit-prison-netflix-jake-hinkson, which looks at Season 2, and the acting of Schilling, Prepon, Stone and Lyonne, to be pretty good, and insightful. The writer finds Schilling and Stone to be stronger pure actors than their on screen significant others, but considers Prepon and Lyonne, as cinematic objects and personalities, to be the perfect counterpart to Schilling and Stone, respectively. I think he's right about Schilling being really good, especially the example he used comparing her work as jailed Piper to her ten years younger self. He also thinks Piper is a much stronger character vis a vis Alex. I don't mean a stronger fictitious character, but a stronger narrative focal point.

Great article! :) I kinda agree with what he says, especially about Schilling

  3. Hey that's your prerogative. I'm only explaining my opinions and feelings on the show, not asking or expecting anyone else to agree. As for why someone would watch the show without caring about Alison and Noah, well speaking for myself personally, even disliking those two, I still find the writing fairly compelling, I think the actors are all doing an amazing job (though I'd say I find Dominic West to be the least impressive of the four leads) and as stupid as it seems so far, I am interested in the whole mystery/why Noah's getting arrested, etc. because sue me, I'm a sucker for a mystery. Also, interestingly, considering they were both only seen through the eyes of their spouse who wanted out of the marriage, I like Helen and Cole just fine.

Well that's the beauty of boards like this and why they exist. You and I see it completely different and that's okay. As I said, I'm hardly so puritanical as to balk at characters having an affair. But I personally felt that the great love story between Alison and Noah was a lot of tell and little showing. Well actually, let me be fair, there was some showing that essentially amounted to a lot of gratuitous sex scenes and sorry, sex scenes does not equate to a love story for me. And yes, I do think they were both cruel at times in their actions and words to Helen and Cole.

Ops, so sorry if I soundend arrogant, didn't want to :( I was just wondering because basically no one I know watches this show, so I only read opinions all around the Internet and from what I see most of the viewers are not rooting for them. (and I often find myself rooting for characters that everybody "hates" so maybe it's me lol)

Btw, I completely agree with you, without these boards I'd feel so lonely lol Also, you well explained why you still like the show without necessarily rooting for them and now it makes a lot more sense to me, and I must admit the writing and the acting are what make this show so interesting.

And yes, sex is a huge part of their relationship, can't prove it wrong, but I still feel there's more to it.

  4. Interesting analysis, but I don't agree with it in the sense that I don't think Season 3 Piper (after she goes all out of character) is the real Piper. I think her inability to live up to people's expectations (Her words to Red in 3x02:" I lie I get in trouble. I tell the truth I get in trouble. I can't do anything right."), her guilt over Alex's life being in danger because of *her* (a guilt she's been tamping down and compartmentalizing for all of S3) and the awful name Alex called her in the cafeteria scene flipped a switch and she decided to become the bad person that everyone says she is. There are numerous times in previous seasons, where people say she's a "horrible person" (Big Boo), "mean person" (Crazy Eyes), etc. so I think she subconsciously gave up on trying to be good. As I said before, though, I don't for the life of me know why she felt that cheating on Alex (the girlfriend she loved) was ok, esp. since they reconciled completely in 3x03. Bah! Still scratching my head over that one....She's a darned complex character so we could be debating this 'til the cows come home, but her complexity (to me) is part of her appeal as a protagonist :)

Once again, I completely agree ;)

Her complexity is what makes me like her even more. But most of the fandom is not aware of how complex she is. And the thing that makes me angry the most is how everyone blames her for being "rich". I can't stand it. Seriously. (that scene with Daya and Lorna in s3). I feel so bad for Pipes when she gets blamed for this. Another time I felt really bad for her is when their parents came visiting on her bday, that sad look on her face when her dad couldn't even say a word to her.

The only thing he pointed out was how much of a failure she is at 32.

But still everyone acts as her life is simple just because it's less "tragic" compared to some inmates backstories.

  5. Absolutely! There is way too much love and history and too many scenes of them showing their love for each other throughout the seasons for it *not* be endgame. I mean, they've talked about their lives post-Litchfield in S1 and S3. Why would the writers repeatedly bring that up, and why would they have Piper (who many people accuse of loving Alex less than Alex loves her---more on that below) say things like "Why do you always feel so inevitable to me?" in S1 and "It was like the universe had just brought us back together." in S3?? Also, after Alex breaks it off with Piper, you can see how she really isn't *done* with Piper (convo with Yoga Jones) and Piper still has deep feelings for Alex (she tells Stella she and Alex are just "on a break", and that look of longing she gives Alex in the hallway after CO "Gerber" talks to her shows just how much she misses her).

I know Piper treated Alex pretty terribly in S3, but again, I don't think that is the "true" Piper. That Piper is very much in love with Alex, but as a character she has trouble believing she is loveable (stems from childhood issues--lying/pretending to be what others want you to be is better than telling the truth, her parents not giving her unconditional love like Alex's mom gave Alex, etc). Whenever Alex expresses her love, she has this surprised/awed look ("Inevitable" scene in S1, bunk scene in S3, etc) like "Wow, Alex loves *me*???". I do understand why so many people find it hard to believe that Piper loves Alex as much as Alex loves Piper, but I do think it's true; Piper just has a lot of problems accepting love because she didn't get a lot of it growing up, and when she did get it from Larry, it was when she was playing a role (the Nice Blonde Lady).

In terms of writing, I do like it when Alex and Piper interact with other inmates. In fact, I love it. Alex's scenes with Lolly were among my favourites in a pretty bleak season for Ms. Vause. And her scenes with Lorna are always fun to watch. Hopefully, both Alex and Piper will have interesting storylines in Season 4. I know Laura Prepon has said many, many times how much she loves her character and how much she loves to play her character, so I don't think she wants to leave. Keeping fingers crossed that Alex will be ok in season 4!

Again, I 100% agree with you. I have nothing to add. That conversation with Yoga Jones made me think a lot, it was the moment I thought: they're def. endgame.

Btw it's great to read all this different opinions about Vauseman and their "future" ;)

Not sure if this has been shared before but I came across it again recently. Still hilarious. It's the Vauseman version of "Hitler's Rant": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtAsC3Hb3F0

Thanks for sharing "they have to go to Paris and fuck in every bed they find" Lol

  6. You're not alone!

Thank God. I still wonder what's the point of watching this show without even caring a little bit about them?

@truthaboutluv of course they're selfish but not cruel :S And I think they showed several times how much they love each other.

I root for them. can't help it

  7. I have the opposite feeling about Piper/Schilling. I feel as if I've seen characters like her and always hated them, usually down to casting. I think Schilling goes a long way as an actress, very aware of Piper's shortcomings, so that I can want to slap Piper but still be on board with Schilling. Piper's storyline wasn't so great in S3. I understood the choices Schilling was making. IMO she was trying to trouble shoot some of the writing. She was sort of playing Piper as testing the waters - what if I push this button - what happens? How about if I take this stand - does it work? It works! You can see her trying stuff out and processing it. Also, Schilling is really funny. Not, OMG I'm dying funny the way Black Cindy and Nicky and O'Neill, for three, can be, but smart, and aware, and unassuming. She's not self-enchanted, which is a relief.  However, I think she's sort of a hard sell as a bad ass, and the Stella stuff just laid an egg, and for those reasons her story didn't really work. I don't think it's Schilling's fault.

This. Some of my fav lines come from Piper's mouth. She can be very funny

Also here there's another great analysis about Piper's evolution -> http://cavanaugh-and-wine.tumblr.com/post/122824615201/discussing-piper-chapman

  8. @ baky:

I agree with you re: Taylor's performance---she is stellar as Piper, and if there was a single wrong note in her performance in season 3, I place the blame squarely on the writers. I think her character development could have been infinitely more interesting (and plausible) if they hadn't rushed it. As you said, Piper is a very complex character and that part of her story arc needed more time to develop properly, esp. since she seemed to be becoming more self-aware (ie. seeing her *true* self) as the seasons progressed.

I think the Piper we saw in S3 is not the "real" Piper, but rather Piper doing what Piper has done throughout her life-----make herself into the image of what she thinks others expect of her. She did this to get her parents' approval & love, she acted the part of Nice Blonde Lady for Larry, but when she wound up in prison, things changed and she couldn't hide from her true self any longer (remember the speech she gave to Dina, the girl in the wheelchair, in 1x11?)

There is an excellent explanation here: http://alxvse.tumblr.com/post/121890708186/okay

Oh, and this post below is sort of what got the ball rolling with regards to the reasons for Piper's descent:

    http://captainscarletts.tumblr.com/post/121480897210/okay-my-tentative-thoughts-on-why-i-could

I 100% agree with you. I can't really blame the writers because Piper's not really the main character anymore so they had to manage all the storylines. But yes her arc could have been developed a little "better".

The last tumblr post is a truly great analysis.I really think Pipes is complex as hell. What makes me "angry" is that people keep hating her character without even think for a minute about her story since ep.1.

I still think she's a well written character, the only thing I can hope is more screen time for her in S4.

I kinda agree with your other comment too

ps: I want Piper to become full aware of herself with all her flaws and everything. Because she is not a mean person as everybody try to claim. I really hope we'll see a fully self aware Piper at the end of this show.

ps2: that speech in 1x11 is the truest and most genuine thing Piper has ever said

  9. I overall liked this season. I didn't find any of the storylines particullary boring like I did last season.

I think Piper is just bored. She is pretty smart and with burned books and nothing to do in prison she is trying to find her purpose. And with her crooked sense of morality I am not surprised she has found something like this to do.

Ruby Rose's addition was just... meh. I mean yeah, she is hot, but her character was going from anywhere to nowhere, with no developement, nothing.

Am I one of the few people who like Alex? I hope she is OK.

A would have never thought I would like Boo and Pennsatucky. But their friendship was a highlight for me. I am still disgusted with the rape. I feel like that guy did not even know he had it in him. But when he felt the power he felt invincible and discovered what a real, creepy disgusting person he is.

I have never liked Black Cindy or Morello and nothing has changed.

I do, however, liked Suzanne and her story writing. It was funny and upbeat. And at the end when she was standing next to that girl (have we even heard her name?) and they were acting like little kids in love, it was almost unbearably cute.

Red and Healy, well Healy is a misogynist asshole for me, so that's that.

    Excited about Soso/Poussey.

Changing my opinion, there is one storyline that bored me. Daya and her mother.

And since I can't stand that blonde meth head, I did not enjoyed Norma's cult very much.

But otherwise, I am looking forward to the next season :)

Nope. I like Alex and highly hope she's fine. But she will be fine because Laura Prepon/Alex is a big part of the show if you look at the fandom.

Some random thoughts/things I enjoyed about this whole season/last episode:

-Piper wants power and she's sick of being considered the pretty waspy girl. She wants to feel relevant now that Alex is not paying attention to her.

-The tattoos were genious. Trust No Bitch lol (+ her panties speech and that scene when she found that mobile phone)

-The lake scene was so heartwarming

    -Soso joyning the club

-Boo/Penn's friendship. Felt so bad for Penn :(

    -That Rosa cameo!!!!!!

-The Chicken!!! That was fucking brilliant. Seriously

-There were a lot of good references: Hunger Games, Breaking Bad, Forrest Gump, etc.

-Loved the flashbacks. Don't know why but the Daya and Aleida's one almost made me cry

    -Poussey/Taystee and the books funeral

-I enjoyed Gloria's arc. The actress who plays her is so good

-That Black Cindy story with koscher was hilarious. The show needs a lighter character like her

  10. Well, that was a huge fucking blow to the Piper character and all of her growth up untl this point. Even in early Season 3 she didn't try to justify her actions to Alex in the grocery store scene. She admitted she was wrong she apologized (and not apologized) and took responsibilty. That was huge growth. Which is why her becoming some monster in the second half was abruupt and not at all well plotted.

That being said I also think some of her sins are exaggerated. Like she did hire Flaca back when she heard about her mom's cancer. And she wasn't opposed to paying the girls she just didn't know a way to go about doing it without help. (And doing so is actually committing the same exact crime she was indicted for; money laundering.)

In a twisted way, I have never believed that Piper is deeply in love with Alex more than I do right now. And not just the "Alex she fell in love with". Not just the bad ass. She was so desperate for her approval and validation through out the season. When she first went to her with the panty scheme she was initially crushed when she thought she didn't like it and so happy when she found out she did. When they were planning the thing out while discussing the Gerber baby she looked so fucking happy. Like this was the best day of her whole life. Getting to be an equal with Alex. Finally real partners. Not to mention things like the girlfriend scene. Or her planning out there stereotypical lesbian life after running. Those things did happen and aren't negated by later events. And Piper didn't even notice Stella when she first met her. She didn't stop looking at Alex like she hung the moon and stars until she started becoming obsessed with Lolly and ignored Piper (not that it's okay for Piper to be so fucking insecure she has to make out with randoms for attention).

Even when she was kissing Stella on the sly she ran to Alex with such pride like a little kid with every new thing. She wanted Alex to validate her finding the cell phone/money laundering scheme to pay the girls. She thought Alex would be proud of her firing Flaca. And THEN when (in her mind) she thought Alex broke up with her for firing Flaca she kept looking over at Al when she hired Flaca back. Like she thought this would get her approval. That was in the last episode. Even in their last scene when she goes on her dictator rant she looks at her with so much love. There was never a point (not when she was with Stella) that she didn't seem just desperate for Alex's approval. And she never dumped Alex. When Alex dumped her she said it was just a break up period and refused to let Cal call Stella her girlfriend. She clearly believed it was temporary.

With Stella it seemed like such an obvious replication of Alex's recruiting techniques for mules.  It was about power. Alex was joking around about her being a mule in the Gerber baby scene. And she exerted the same kind of power she thought Alex had over her back then. It was like she was playing make believe.

And in her defense with the being "annoyed" thing Alex's basic fears were justified but she took it so far that she accused PIPER of being a spy. And Piper handled that really well. She could have easily flipped out on her. But she didn't. She remained calm. And tried to distract her with jokes. It is pretty okay to be annoyed at someone who accuses you of being a spy when they are in a relationhsip. I don't think the jokes were dismissive. I think she genuinely didn't know what to do and tried to distract her. She is just emotionally stunted.

I don't know. I've never been more disappointed in a character arc. But I've also never been more convinced that in her fucked up WASP way she is in love with Alex. So in love with her that when Alex wasn't herself Piper decided to become her. Like one of them had to be the strong one.

At the same time, I also think Piper is incredibly damaged at this point. And she thought Alex could fix it. But the damage is so internal. I think it was really telling that Piper wasn't just getting off on rough sex. She was getting off on being told what a piece of shit she was. She loved Alex saying hateful things to her. I also think the tattoos were as much about inflicting pain on herself as getting a tattoo. There is a pretty deep well of self-loathing there.

Also, her oral technique is A+.

Always thought she loves Alex, never doubted about that, for this reason I was kinda disappointed when she first kissed Stella.

She was just a distraction, because Alex wasn't paying enough attention to her. It was a dumb move but we know how Pipes works. She craves someone so badly.

Her arc this season was twisted but it kinda makes sense if you think about it (at first I was disappointed too).

She's been a "badass" since season 2. The first half of the season was lighter because it was all about her and Alex. But as soon as they take distance and after the whole panties business idea something changes. She wants power, Alex is not giving attention to her, and she wants to feel relevant. So she starts taking too seriously the whole panties thing. She is sick of being considered the pretty waspy girl that leads a perfect life. We learned she's not confortable with her body for example, or at least she does not consider herself "hot". She needed to underline that she has 2 degrees to Stella. In that scene with Morello and Daya in the cafeteria when they talk about bathrooms and houses she says that she had 4 bathrooms but she was also very lonely as a child. She's trying to state something.  Sending Stella to shu was an horrible thing to do, even if she steals her money first. But still, she needs to affirm her position, you can see it when she tells Boo "I don't fuck around, let the people know". I also see the tattoos as an expression of self loathing (btw I loved her last scene, the endless tattoo one) or as a metaphor of her wanting to leave a mark.

She is a fucked up and complex character, despite what she may seem. And people don't get it.

She needs to understand alone who she really is, what she really wants, and that she can't always rely on someone else. I'm very interested in her storyline in S4. Can't wait.

Ps: Taylor Schilling is great for the role.

  11. Craziest episode ever.
Penn's story is so sad and insane. Completely agree. T.Manning is so great.
Piper, please tell me you're doing this thing on purpose because you've fu**ing lost your mind.(I know it's typical Piper but still, there must be something..)

    Alex/Lolly, gosh.

    Crazy Eyes, so sweet

and Morello. God, she's out of her mind
That Boo prayer lol "Dear Chapman"

  12. This episode was soo good. Loved Chang's backstory. And I felt very sorry for her, it's a kinda sad story.

LOVED that Piper asked her sorry in the toilet scene. so we know Piper's not okay with her look, didn't had a clue.

Ruby Rose....I'm watching you. (her voice tho.)

Morello is out of her mind :(

and YES! Red is back :D!

  13. It was hard to see Nicky go. Highly hope she's coming back soon because she's hands down one of the best characters :'(
Loved the dynamic between Healy and Red, they really care about each other.

The book's funeral LOL Taystee and Poussey always make me laugh lol

Alex and Piper, that "acting" scene is one of their best scenes so far. But they're probably going to screw everything because...They're alex and Piper :S

  14. I think I'm the only one who's happy because they ended up together. I knew it since episode 1. I enjoyed the finale, Ruth and Maura owned it. I think that the kid is actually Noah's daughter but I don't see him as the killer. There must be something behind all of this. The way they look at each other when the detective knocks at the door is kinda scary. What the f---k did they do?

  15. I might be the only one here, but I like Alison and feel genuine empathy for her.  She's a hot mess, but she has a lot of reasons to be.  I don't think she's even started getting over Gabriel's death and she's been almost sleepwalking through life since then - until she met Noah.  Personally, I think she could have made a smarter choice that that ambivalent prick, but that doesn't really matter because I think this is more about Alison coming to terms with all the loss (aside from Gabe's death, she never knew her father, her mother is a major narcissistic flake who abandoned her, her grandmother just died) than it is about the affair itself.  I think Alison is the only one I'm rooting for and hoping that somehow she comes through all of this with a better idea of who she really is and what she really wants.  I hate Cherry, don't care about Cole and feel sorry for Helen, but Alison breaks my heart.

I love Alison too and I kinda understand her. She seems alone even when she's around Cole and his family. I hate Cherry aswell and I don't trust Cole. Not to mention Alison's mother, come on, can we even consider Athena a mother? She is herself only with Noah, and he may not be the man of the year but I still like him. I ship them together because they're fucked up but they understand each other.
