TIL that a Hollywood producer has that far and wide kind of reach. Finding secret clinic and equip and staff it properly for a specialized brain surgery? Influencing a hospital to rescind Chairmanship without any cause? To cancel funding for an established research program? I can buy it if she just knows those people involved. I can even buy the private jet. But what kind of leverage does she have over them?

    Simple.

    Money and connections.

Sam is not Ray's equal.  She is superior.

The "secret clinic" was not a secret clinic.  It appeared to be an un-used or under-used surgery center (much like the place where Joan Rivers met her end).  To find it and rent it is no big deal for a player like Sam.

The "influence" is based on money.  You want the money, you do what I say.

As for it being an established research program?  It still needs big bucks to stay afloat and there are many other places that money could go.  In Los Angeles alone, you have how many hospitals with research programs?  Competition is fierce for that sort of coin.

She's a large donor to the hospital. Or, she's Red Reddington dressed as Sam, acting like Red.

She and/or the studio provide the $$$$.

The surgery is contrived, that Sam could make that happen.

I did not see it as contrived at all.  Hollywood donates millions to places like Sloan Kettering.  One swipe of the pen makes your check out to another hospital.  Do the surgery.  Period.

Yeah but for as many times as Mickey has used Daryl, he won't cut him out of his life, whereas the others were just about done with Mickey at various points.

I guess the OG Donovan brothers blame Mickey for their sister's death and how Mickey wasn't around when their mother passed.

Oh, yeah.  Mickey uses Darryl and Darryl keeps asking for more.  I am sure it's related to wanting to be loved and accepted although when he shot Frank, Darryl was out for himself and his part of the movie deal.  I guess that was the Donovan in him seeping out.  He is now stuck with being sent to the big house for murder or being sent to the big house for being an accessory.

I agree.  All three of the OG's blame Mickey for everything.  Not being around, cheating on their mother, the death of their sister, etc.

Thanks! But what did Mickey take the fall for last season and how did Ray get him out of jail?

Mickey took the fall for the Armenian hit.

  6. I found Daryl's willful ignorance upsetting. His feelings of loyalty and guilt angered me.

He is a product of Mickey's selfishness or did he forget where babies come from?

Actually I thought it was being used as a deterrent. No one wants to go near a dead dog hanging from a chain. I've been told drug dealers use dead critters, bones, whatnot to protect a stash in abandoned houses, garages, etc.

Every single Donovan is in serious trouble or incapacitated in some manner. As badly as some of it is,  I do hope it's renewed.

Of note, my close caption called the wild guy 'Acid Man'. I thought he'd be Meth Man or Gibberish Man. And did he ever have a coherent line? What are the SAG rules on that?

I laughed when I saw "acid man" too!  So, that's what acid does to you.  Huh.  Who knew?

Terry shooting him was great for me because, dogs.

Nor me.  I can't watch those SPCA commercials.....I start crying and wanting to put my fist through the screen.   Or hunt the humans down that did this to them.

I avoid certain channels to avoid the commercials.  I feel bad because I know they need money and do good work.  Just wait until I win the lottery.  You will see how this can be done the right way.

I tell you, don't show me a dead dog hanging from a tree, there is no reason for that anywhere at any time. What in the hell is wrong with these writers, they are sick.  Why don't you just have Ray cook up a shih tzu and serve it to his spoiled ugly kids next. God! Enough already, I am through with this crap and this show. Love you Liev, but I can't take dead dogs, no matter what. Ta Ta.

I agree.  What did it add to the story or the scene?  Not much that I can see.  If they wanted to depict dog fighting, how about some big, barking dogs in cages?  I get that the guy was nuts but get a clue, writers.

I was also so upset by the dog that I literally had my hand up to block myself seeing that part of the screen once they showed it.  I love that we are all so upset by it - we were able to hang on for people being dismembered and dropped into the ocean, but don't kill a dog dammit!!

I look at it like this~

The dogs have no choice.  People do.  More often than not, anyone that got killed was doing something stupid with no regard for the consequences they were creating.

That Urgent Care scene was so fake. I won't begin to list the reasons that it wasn't correct.

What was with the hanging dog? I wonder that the owner killed him because he didn't warn his owner about the last time Bunchy was there. I can't recall but would have to go back and rewatch. I disliked seeing it as an animal lover.

Bridget is a very messed up young lady. I understand why (her family) but I think that she wouldn't have taken it so far had she felt love from her father versus getting shoo'd away when her Mom died.

Did Abby get her necklace from HSN? Might explain why Ray was watching it.

The dog upset me and it added nothing to the story or scene.  I know it was fake but I don't need that shit in my life.

Wasn't the necklace from Cartier?  It was a red box, I think.

I continue to appreciate the way this show has stayed true to its original premise. Ray is a professional Hollywood fixer but he spends at least half his time getting his own wretched family members out of trouble--for free. And now it looks like Bridget is starting up the third generation of hapless Donovan criminals.

Every week while watching this show I find myself wondering who's ultimately to blame for the mess that is the Donovan family. Is it Mickey for having set such a poor example to begin with, or is it Ray for continuing to rescue and enable Mickey, his brothers, and his kids? A little from both column A and column B, I guess.

That's probably why he buys white shirts by the gross. He could just wear black shirts but maybe that would make him look too much like a typical gangster.

I did the same thing.  When they were all at the vet's office, the comment was made that Ray took over taking care of everyone when they knew their mom was sick.  Well, he's doing it his way.  That's for sure.

  9. I agree too.  I loathed Abby but she got along with Ray's family (even though they are shits) and they loved her.  Remember at the beginning?  Ray told her to not let the lion (Mickey) in and she was sneaking behind Ray's back and letting the kids see Micky.  That sticks with me through every episode.  Ray's chaotic life was what it was but when Mickey got out of jail early, that amped up the chaos for all of them - even the good ones - but they didn't know it.

I'm out numbered here, but I love ray. He mostly only hurts bad people and always takes care of his messed up family.

Hes been dealt a bad hand but always tries to help others.

    I feel his pain

You have me on your side.  We get to see Ray and all of his messes and to him, this stuff makes sense.  We can't force Ray to be the guy we think he should be.  He was molested by a priest, his mom died of cancer, he father is a shit.  He - and we - are all damaged goods.

It made me ugly cry.  I thought the whole bar scene to death were absolutely beautiful.  Abby managed to acknowledge and praise everyone there.  Ray missed it, of course.  Even it he weren't off trying to "save" Abby's life, he would have missed it (probably off fucking the neighbor).   I thought Paula, Eddie, and Kerris, were perfection.  Abby knew who she could depend on, who she could trust, and it wasn't her husband.  Ray ruined everything, in my opinion.  Rushing in and wailing over Abby's body.  Screaming at his vulnerable daughter.  Expecting his father and brothers to stand back while he abused Bridget.  Usually Ray's torment moves me because Liev is that good, but fuck Ray.  His torment is of his own creation at this point.

Ray would kill anyone for Abby, he would break any law, do any dirty deed.  But he couldn't be faithful, he couldn't honor her wishes, and he couldn't actually be there when she needed him.  Yet Abby is somehow always the bad guy, and Ray is the poor sap having to deal with the filthy-mouthed hag.

    Just playing devil's advocate~

Abby knew Ray was leaving.  She may have had the bar party knowing he was not going to be around.

Ray was upset at Abby's suicide but remember, Bridget was the only other person in the house when he arrived.  Under the circumstances, he rightly figured Bridget helped Abby kill herself.  He was not aware of Terry's role at all.  (I also find it very odd that Terry left the kid alone with her mother's body.  I can see going downstairs and giving her some private time but to leave her alone?  No.)

Ray seems to have a real Madonna/Whore complex.  Bridget and Abby fall into Madonna - he treats Bridg like a perpetual five year old, and Abby is on a pedestal and last woman he has sex with.  While all the women he bangs fall into the whore category, they're also vulnerable females who must be rescued by heroic Ray.  Notice that it was a male Ray injected with meningitis.  He sees men as fair game (unless they're family) and all women are fragile, weak, and need to be protected.

    Except for that Mossad agent.

Why is Ray Donovan turning into Shameless West?

I'm totally confused on the timing. I'm assuming everything that happened this episode is the present? Terry and Bridget both came home from New York?

The real TMZ dude is gonna be pissed.

Was the male prostitute at Marilyn's star a callback to season one? Ray seems to have a soft spot for the exploited.

And Susan Sarandon is becoming the scariest person on this show. Also, thank you writers for killing off young, bland Starlet. I'm sorry she was pregnant, but damn I could not live through a Ray baby arc.

OT: Have never seen Scream 2 or 3 and it's been on HBO. Geez is Liev Shreiber young pre Ray Donovan forehead scowl wrinkle.

    Nah.  Harvey is cool.

And no one confirmed her pregnancy.  I think it was a ploy.

In this episode. More than ever, Terry looked like Rays brother. It could have been the haircut. I understood him leaving the fight club, and LA, but for a minute when he was in the ring drinking heavily I wondered that he wasn't going to hang himself. Was he having guilt or remorse?

    For me, definitely both.

Hard to figure out the time arc of the story. But I'm glad the actress character is dead. She and Ray were an uninteresting couple.

I keep on flip flopping.  I think they are intentionally making us think something is a flashback and then they surprise us when it turns out to be current.

I was also laughing when she told Ray they could go out on a date.  Yeah, Ray is a dating type of fella.  His look was prime.  She did not even catch it.

Is this the final season (I hope).  I can maybe finish this year's shows but this show has deteriorated so badly.  Does anyone else feel like they need a shower after watching....

Not a shower.  I just need to smack someone.

I thought Ray sold his house. The escrow must be taking a really long time to complete.

Wasn't Bridget attending college in New York? Did she drop out or is she just home for a winter/spring/summer break?? Was her "boyfriend" actually dead in the end?

Maybe Natalie wasn't dead...she looked like she could have been just passed out. Who killed her sleazebag husband?

    She dead.

That's the first thing that Kelly Ripa said when she interviewed him on her show. He also looks so good in his suits. I was noticing he always has an abundance of pressed white shirts (as the RD character)

I think he even has a stash in the trunk of his car.

I guess I am not smart enough for this show, and the flashbacks and imaginary scenes do not help. How did Abby die? Did she commit suicide or did she die in Las Vegas by convulsion that was caused by untreated head trauma happened in their vehicle accident?

Committed suicide, at home, with pills.

I assume that Terry - who is very conscientious - offered to take her to the bar, but Bridget wanted to stay close to her mother for awhile and grieve alone.

And that's why Terry should have called the bar.

Remember, Ray called Abby and Bridget but not Terry. No missed calls on Terry's phone.

    Who would leave Bridget alone?

Too silly of a set-up for the bar fight.
