In a world where it's insanely dangerous to venture outside one of the few cities, and where most of humanity has been exterminated, we still somehow have isolated roadside diners open to all comers. Of course, it doesn't have to make sense, it only exists to give Gabriel a way to remind the audience of how evil he is.

We also have a city where many people are on the edge of starvation that also hosts a captive lion breeding program. Again, doesn't make sense but it gives a heavyhanded metaphor for a chat between evil father and evil son.

It's clear that the writers are happy to put illogical elements in the setting just so they can have scenes that they think are really cool. Too bad those "cool" scenes are so cliche.

If better than Helix but worse than Defiance is what passes for average on Syfy these days, then yes, it's an average Syfy show.

Eh. For me, it's about the angels. But the thing is, angels are supernatural and not people, so anything can happen. But as somebody observed, if anything can happen, nothing matters. I'm having trouble getting around that.

The guy playing William is the only villain who really shows signs of life to me. I thought the lesbian goddess priestess wife was starting to do something but it occurred to me that the whole "sister" thing was a ploy. (Wasn't the signal device smuggled via the body? Sorry, but I had trouble concentrating.) Chris Egan is thoroughly convincing as a thick-headed male ingenue, but who really wants to watch that? A gay character who exists to service the male hero Alex but has no sexual interest seems awfully random.

Are we supposed to assume Michael is Alex's father?  From Legion, I figured it was Gabriel simply because Alex's mother didn't recognize Michael.  But Micheal's tears suggested something different.  I really hope they don't drag out this mystery for an entire season just so the hero can spend another entire season moaning over the fact that he isn't completely human.  That sort of drama is just dumb and boring.  They still need to tell us why Vega decided a caste system was a good idea, especially one that left such a precious and dwindling resource (children) to nearly starve to death.  Even enterdominion.com doesn't explain this.  I can completely overlook some of the other illogical crap and pretend it's been longer than 25 years, but it's hard to get past the dumbness of the caste system when they constantly mention needing children (another virgin bride mention this ep).

I'm still sticking with it.  Though I have to say that it feels vaguely racist to watch a show that seems to ignore diversity as much as possible, with Arika and her crew being an exception and the crew is all dead now so it's like they never existed.

I liked this episode a lot more than the last one. For me, I find Alex and Michael to be the emotional core so if they are hitting their beats, it works for me. I tune out most of the Vega political crap. I had a weird moment where I thought Stephen Colbert had a cameo as the market owner spy for Michael. That actor could seriously be his brother! The Gabriel disciple cult was pretty disturbing and added a creepy weird layer to William. I do think the most godawful (pun intended) dialogue was about the two lions.  Anyone else finding Tom Wisdom smoking HAWT? He was born in 1973 so fair game ;-)

I dislike Michael even more than I did before, that's a real problem if he's supposed to be one of the good guys. And ASH's character has gotten overly mustache-twirly, they need to dial it back. They also need to cut back on characters, there are too many people on this show.

Link to comment

I don't really find myself enjoying the show that much because aside from the blatant racism, the plot is an illogical mess.

Why is the poorly acted, special snowflake princess now going to be engaged to evil dumb-ass junior other than it is supposed to create some angst. What about her great love for poorly acted, blandly blonde, chosen one? Oh yeah, we need something to fuel dumb-ass juniors fury and to prompt him plot blandly blonde's demise in direct opposition to Gabriel's wishes. Undoubtedly, the snowflake and the chosen one will continue to get it on, girl will get knocked up and "whose the Daddy" mayhem will ensue.

Based on the movie, I too thought Gabriel was the father of the chosen one, but they do seem to be leaning in the Michael is the Daddy direction.

Thus far, I am really only interested in Michael and Gabriel. Gabriel's fury over Michael being harmed was touching. Strangely, I also like ASH's character, he is a dick and does not hide it. I have no sympathy for anyone who gets screwed over by the the overly obvious villain. It also doesn't help when Reisen is such a skeevy character in his own right. The great man has benefitted from the caste system, probably helped create it and as such, he is as vile as those he pretends to be better than.

I will watch another couple of episodes mainly because it it summer and nothing else much is on (can all the networks please move to new year-round dramatic content to prevent shows like this from surviving), but I already feel the show going the way of Helix, which means it will be dumped half-way through the season and forgotten.

I'm still sticking with it, but I feel like it's going to be kind of a rut for now, until they finally move past Alex being a damn reluctant hero.  I swear, that story-line has just been so played out to me, and I"m annoyed that they went that route for the time being.  Hopefully, Michael's injury will change that for the better. I guess the road trip was a good way to get more background stuff, but I'm still finding Alex to be a bore right now.  I did crack up over the stand-off due to Michael calling "shotgun" in the car.

So, if I understood Michael correctly, there are other angels hiding in Vega.  They were apparently suppose to be refugees or something, and he was helping them.  Hmm... right now, I have a feeling this is being set up to blow up in his face, and Whele will use this to turn people against Michael.  I'm sure it will come out somehow.

Still not sure what is going on with Riesen having an affair with this mysterious hot angel.

Claire finally agrees to marry William.  If I were William, I wouldn't have been that happy, considering how much Riesen had to put on the table, for her to finally agree to it.  This is clearly not out of love, buddy.  Plus, you know thinks are going to get only worse when Alex returns.

Apparently, you can't take Gabriel to a restaurant, without him being the worst customer in the world.  At least he enjoyed that milkshake.

Link to comment

On Alex's parentage, having not seen the movie, my guess is that his father is Father. ie God although both Michael and Gabriel might think they're the babydaddy.  Alternately Alex might be where God is hiding Himself.

On the question of he Helenites (Helenians?) anyone think that they might have something with the Goddess worship or are they deluded.  Myself I hope there is a Goddess because monotheism gives me a rash.

This show is *spectacularly* awful. I find myself liking it more each week just because when I think it can't get worse, it does. This week's "But in the meantime, of 18 hours or so, PPPrincess has felt abandoned enough to agree to marry Traitorous Bastard" plus roadtrip just adds cherries on top

Yes, you shouldn't meet Gabriel in a restaurant, but he didn't go after a milkshake. He had a strong interest in pudding (homemade versus canned).

Maybe because I am watching my brain disintegrate, I find this series hard to follow. I'd like to think it is because they spend so much time talking about characters we haven't been introduced to, or talking to character that seem inadequately introduced, or who die before their position in the story is well established.

It is hard for me to believe Gabriel picked William out because William was so persuasive at convincing people.  Yeah, you can write that in a scene but William seems like a very weak character to me, not at all charismatic.   I did like Gabriel blowing his horn.  If he wasn't such a nasty piece of work, one could quite warm to a guy who is a musician and lover of pudding.

It was a contact poison, that had to be embedded deep ("into the nail beds" Akira said) to work. She knew she was killing the women, and the whole scene was to show how ruthless she is. I actually like that about her character.

But they knew their nail polish was poisoned so why were they suicidal?  I can buy Akira as being ruthless, she doesn't seem to have a particular motivation (her sister was killed after the handmaidens, no?). She seems to have put herself in a very vulnerable position for no particularly good reason then a vague kind of ambition. She is Evelyn's wife, right? And Evelyn seems to be a power dealer in this universe. So why put herself under control of a much weaker set of characters?  There certainly is no benefit to being female in either society since they are treated basically as chattel (I guess male writers just can't push past current day stereotypes) for whomever is in power.  Even the few female angels are getting the worst of it in this series. I think I'd better stop thinking about this. It is doing unfortunate things to my blood pressure.

If Gabriel loved pudding and porn, I'd feel like I was watching Supernatural. Is it written in the Bible somewhere that Gabriel has a sweet tooth?

I don't think any of the lead actors are American.

I'm pretty sure this is correct. It just begs the question why everyone has to pretend to be American? Except of course the people the show wants the viewers to see as other. Anthony Stewart Head's accent is especially egregious. Is that what we sound like to him? That's sad.

Ok, so the actors playing Gabriel and William have to be related. They just look really similar to me. I'm starting to get disillusioned with the direction of William's story.  He is so lame. Why do I have to sit through him whining about Princess Fickle? I was hoping his "love" was just part of his evil hustle. Instead, he is absolutely in love with her dull ass. I was offended for him when she basically told him she brokered a deal with her dad to get what she wanted, but now she actually was going to marry him. How sweet. "Uh, I guess I'll marry you. I mean that's the deal I worked out with Daddy soooo..."

I also don't believe Jeep was Alex's father. They threw away his character too quickly. They would want to mine that father/son relationship a little more. I don't think Michael is the father because he seems very anti-baby. I don't see him knocking up Alex's mom and then telling her and Jeep, "Good luck with that. I'll just be sitting in the other room."

I'm not really into the Helena drama. These ladies have never heard of the expression: don't start none, won't be none.

I'm very suspicious of Alex's friend who is affable, gay, and not interested. He is probably an angel. He seems to go out of his way to be everyone's happy friend. I don't buy it. I also don't understand why they bothered to make a point out of his sexual orientation. That was a weird scene. That Helena chick is hot, but no one person will float everyone's boat. Damn. One dude isn't trying to bang her, so he must be gay? I loved how she Sherlocked her way into that and he was just like "you got me!" Ok show.

Unless they changed Legion canon, Jeep is definitely not the father.  The father is still unknown.  Legion canon would also suggest that Michael is not the father because the mother (completely forgot her name) didn't recognize him at all.  But the show is sure building up these father/son moments with Alex and Michael.  It may turn out to be uncle/son moments as the movie somewhat suggested Gabriel was the daddy.  Either, way, it seems like it would be someone important.

I'm probably wrong about this but the actor who plays Michael (Tom Wisdom, what a great name for a guy playing an angel) seems to me to be channeling his inner Keanu Reeves.  I'm not saying this is a good thing, but his outfits, his overall look, and his fight scenes all slightly remind me of Reeves.

I thought we were going to get past this when ALex asked Michael "What's different about me?" and the bad angels showed up. Figured maybe Alex would sprout wings or do something a human shouldn't be able to do. But no.

What was the point of that attack, BTW? It wasn't to kill Alex. Gabriel didn't want Michael harmed. So .....

I keep thinking the main guy's name is David, so I get confused when someone calls him Alex. Then I remember he played a similar character named David, in NBC's Kings a few years ago. Maybe just something about the guy screams "reluctant hero, light on personality" to casting directors.

Though I have to say that it feels vaguely racist to watch a show that seems to ignore diversity

I have to say a predominantly white cast actually makes some sense.  Let's face it, white men hold the vast majority of this country's wealth.  It wouldn't surprise me that in a post apocalyptic society that they would still hold those resources and even use them to set themselves up in positions of power.

But they knew their nail polish was poisoned so why were they suicidal?

My read was that the women thought they were making their nails into the delivery system for the poison to kill their enemy, not that they were killing themselves. Only Akira knew what was actually going to happen. It was why she told them to get the poison deep into their nail beds, so that it would kill them. The one woman said she was excited to be the instrument of death of their enemy, which made me think she assumed they would attack and kill the enemy with their poisoned nails.

Maybe I'm wrong, but not realizing the poison that could poison someone else could also poison themselves would make these women idiots.  When I saw them scratching the floor, it was the first thing I thought about, and clearly I'm not that smart because I can't work out what the motivation was for killing them.  On the other hand, I'm guessing this is a minor issue in a growingly confused narration.  I don't expect clarification any time soon but perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised. Perhaps.

I don't think I'll ever love this show, but it's infinitely better when I ignore angel-free scenes. Then it's all leather-clad protective brother Gabriel and "Gosh, Tom Wisdom is gorgeous."

Does anyone remember if the diner was still standing at the end of Legion? When MIchael said they were making a stop, I was really hoping that was it.

I just love how people empty their gun clips while the angle holds his metal wings up to protect his face, then once the clip is empty the angel lowers his wings.  Come on people, don't be stupid!  Wait till the wings come down before you shoot.  Or at least don't empty your whole clip.

Everyone knows that once your gun is empty of bullets you have to throw it at your enemy, they're just lulling the angels into a false sense of security so that they can hit them right in the nose with their gun.

My favorite LOL this episode was how Senator Frost apparently overheard Claire and Bix but didn't think to look into who arrived with Michael and then was arrested.  Whole standoff could have been completely averted if only he had some very basic investigative skills.

I'm getting tired of everything Helena.  We're four episodes in and we haven't learned anything new about Arika or Helena.  Everything we know about Arika and her city is exactly what we knew when we first met her.

I'm sort of hoping that Bixby lives.  She's annoying and the jaundice orphan trope is tiresome, but I'm so over Whele killing everyone for no good reason.  "I want to keep the Chosen One a secret" is not a good reason.  Yawn.

I can't believe I'm still watching this show.  What's more, despite all the snarky running commentary I have, I actually enjoy watching this show.  Bad angels, gets me every time.  Neat tattoos are helpful, too.

Oh show, four episodes in and already you're in a rut. A 'held hostage' episode? I'm starting to feel held hostage by these plots not going anywhere but in circles.

If TPTB insist on giving face time to each of the six or so main characters each week instead of telling an actual story, I will stop bothering to watch live and just catch up if I hear something worthwhile has happened. Is this a television series trope ?: each actor named in the opening credits must get a quota of story time in each episode, even if a weak subplot needs to be created?

Another problem is there's no one left to root for. The angels are murdering megalomaniacs. The human leaders are murdering drama queens with control issues. The chosen one is an angst ridden wimp. Is there anyone else?

I'm starting to understand why God took a break from these losers...

This show is starting to lose me. So Alex runs off for a day and when he returns, he is promptly arrested by merciless ... peers? Who seem to have no recognition of him, or need to say, "Dude, this is weird but we have to arrest you ...?" And then he throws a punch at one over a minor slight? And ends up in solitary, where he is released from and ... returns to his unit without any questions or looks? Are we to believe that this security force is compartmentalized and has absolutely no grape vine or curiosity about anything? That's not how it works.

Meanwhile, Alex pulls the "everyone around me gets hurt" reluctant hero card. Ugh.

And someone saves Michael by melting an angel feather? Who was that?

And his sister tells both brothers she will help, but seems to be more sincere with Michael. Why does her help matter? What can one more arch angel do? Because if they were so powerful, seems like we would have seen one make a difference by now.

And the hostage thing. Oy. If they next have an ep where a mysterious illness strikes the city, I quit.

I'm starting to understand why God took a break from these losers...

Exactly. They need to give us signs of why Michael believes humanity is worth saving. Right now, Gabriel is winning the argument. Though without humans to make stuff, farm, etc., how would angels survive? It would get awfully boring.

My money is on Raphael. He or she is the only Archangel that's unaccounted for. And according to Wikipedia, the name means "It is God who heals", "God Heals", "God, Please Heal"

Yes Traditionally Gabriel was God's Messenger, Michael was his Warrior, Uriel His Wetwork Specialist (Angel of Death) and Raphael the Healer)  I suspect Raphael hasn't been heard from because se is the "Can't we all just get along?" guy/gal and noone is listening to hir so se's in a snit.

He threw a punch in order to end up in solitary so that he wouldn't have to go through being stripped and having his tattoos seen by everyone.  I assume there are several different security/military groups.  Alex is in the Archangel Corps, which seems separate than the other security groups, and I would definitely assume different than prison guards.  They wear different uniforms and in the first episode, gate security mentioned that Alex was one of Michael's, indicating not of the same division.  The only person in Alex's unit that I would expect to immediately remark on Alex's jailing (apart from his friends) would be his superior.

Is this a television series trope ?: each actor named in the opening credits must get a quota of story time in each episode, even if a weak subplot needs to be created?

It's not so much a trope but simply a credit for the actors being paid for an episode.  Usually those in the opening credits will be in the episode, though there are times when it just indicates they are being paid.  It depends a lot on contract.  For example, Katie Cassidy on Arrow is second credit on every single episode, even those she doesn't appear in.

Sheesh, I really hope Alex is telling the truth at the end, and he's ready to accept be the Chosen One now.  I'm just so tired of the reluctant hero story.  Of course, they would pull the whole "Everyone close to me gets hurt!  I'm better off being locked away!!!" plot, briefly.  At least it did make me kind of like Claire for a second, with her "You've got to me kidding me!" look to that whine-fest, and then she just springs him anyway.

Yeah, the whole hostage story-line was a waste and had no tension.  You aren't going to kill off Anthony Head or Alan Dale, when the season isn't even halfway done.

So, this new angel has shown up, and is promising both Michael and Gabriel that she will side with one over the other, when the time comes.  It did look like she was slightly more sincere with Michael, but it could be an act.  I'll guess we'll find out.

After Riesen gunned that that guy at the end, I guess they figured they had to do something to make sure we remember that Whele is worse, so why not have him kill a kid.  Assuming he succeeds, I guess we should expect more manpain from Alex.

Arika is trying to recruit Walker into Team Helena, I see.  If she goes for it, I hope it won't be just because of some dumb reason, like he has a crush on Alex, and is upset over the Alex/Claire thing.  But the way she looks at him sometimes makes me think they're going that direction.

Link to comment

I didn't hear the entire conversation between Arika and walker, were there hints that Walker had some connection to helena?

And who healed MichaeL?  Was it Uriel?  If so why keep the ID all mysterious only to reveal her in the same episode?  Maybe it was Raphael. Angel of Healing?

Well of course they are not Legion.  This was clearly inspired by someone watching Supernatural and thinking, you know what we need?  More whining about God abandoning the Angels.  More Angels at war with humans.  More Angels taking over human bodies.  Let's make our own show.  Then they cast Rupert Giles and thought we really need to call the hero The Chosen One.

I just watched episode 4 and now I'm convinced that Dominion's God decided to be born and live as a human as some kind of metaphysical vacation.  Alex was the chosen vessel.

It was something about the conversation between Michael and his sister about God leaving them and Michael's faith that he would return one day.

ParadoxLost: I love that theory -- especially since I'm just hatewatching along and there is no way to make that storyline work and give Alex an internal life at the same time. (Well there is: make him fight the takeover instead of suddenly discover he's allknowing/allpowerful/etc, but no way would they go there). Just as long as he doesn't raise Bixby from the dead.

Link to comment

Like everyone else, I groaned when Alex started whining some more about how everyone dies. You would think he could try to be more useful to somehow avert all this death, but he seems to want to go the other way. I still don't trust his affable fellow soldier. He is just too lighthearted and takes everything in stride. For some reason that makes him super suspicious to me.

That hostage taker was a total crackpot. He had a good point about those two old bastards trying to hold on to their power, but he went about things in the dumbest possible way. Why not work a little behind the scenes and use your position of power to get the info you want? He didn't even try that! His opening salvo was hostage taking and endangering the whole city's food supply!

I continue to hate the Princess. She actually wasn't that bad this episode, I just don't like her.

Whele's endless massacre is getting exceedingly tedious! At this point, I don't even think he'll care that his creepy son is a traitor.

I agree that this episode was the worst.  Why would Bixby even say she saw "the Chosen One" when she knows his name is Alex?  Why would Alex get arrested?  The whole drama over who Uriel will choose.  No new info about Helena or why we should even care.  Just blah, blah, blah.

I may DVR a few more episodes, but I'm not sure how much I will watch.

There are a lot of flaws with this show but this episode shoved a couple out in front of the others for me.

First, its incredibly dumb that the reveal of the tattoo meaning is a current episode only thing, as in here are the words that will resolve this weeks plot device.  So do the writers think the characters, the audience, or both are too stupid to piece together a season long batch of clues to some big cliffhanger reveal.  OK, so the characters are too dumb for that.  The audience is probably fleeing and no one would be left to keep track of multi episode clues.

I guess that also leads to how dumb it is that the Chosen One's only needed skill is literacy and not even a high level.  A kid just learning to read could do this. A kid would also not get distracted by how like Flash Dance the clues were this week. But no dancing, sad.

But I digress.  The other thing that stands out is that everyone sucks.  No wonder Gabriel thinks the Chosen One will join them, the human power structure are rotten, self indulgent egomaniacs.  All of them.  They need to feed some of the leaders to the lions and bring in some "common" people that might explain why Alex would side with humanity, if he ever does.

Charles Widmore and Giles in the same room without their accents was really offputting.  Especially Giles American accent which just grates.

As far as diversity in the cast goes - I wasn't distracted by the lack of it, so maybe the story was good enough for me to overlook that aspect.

Honestly, I don't need every cast to be some representation of the United Colors of Benetton for me to enjoy a show.

Yeah, me neither.  I could care less about political correctness when I'm watching TV.  I just want be entertained.

I leave the minority counting to my lefty friends.

I am a little miffed that a "bad angel" was a fat dumpy woman.  :(

The whole series is full of stereotypes.  The golden hero. The accessible and always sexually hungry women in skimpy outfits.  The old white men in charge (oh, have you looked at the Congress, or the CEOs of major corporations?).  Anyone not in the approved fantasy range is either a baddie or part of the scenery. And it never occured to anyone on this production that it smelled to high heavens of the predictable?  That's what irritates me. You have X amount of money and a certain license to create something and instead it is just the same old stuff as if we have stagnated into a single plot line that repeats its way through too many movie and television shows (with a few blessed exceptions).   Imagination...anyone have that???

And I'd ignore all that if the acting was good and I had any notion that things would improve as the story unwinds.  At this point, I'm not so very confident of that.

The old white men in charge (oh, have you looked at the Congress, or the CEOs of major corporations?).

By which I mean, just because that's the society we are stuck with now, it doesn't mean we are doomed to repeat the pattern into the future unless we have complete failure to see we have other choices. Surely fiction is the one place we should be able to exercise that choice.
