The situation is different now, though. Before, they were thrown together as designated soulmates. Now... even a dedicated and conscientious professor probably isn't going to set aside tons of time and attention for an annoying outsider who walks in and demands to be helped. Unless nudged to do so.

I was sure it was going to be Shawn walking through that door at the end. Trevor is even better.

Except Eleanor was only his soulmate in 1 out of 802 reboots, right? I think a Chidi who would potentially risk his place in—what he thought to be the Good Place—to help the same annoying outsider become a better person would absolutely spend a few hours a week teaching her, especially after his What We Owe to Each Other lecture series.

An NBC ad for next week’s episode actually spoiled Trevor’s comeback, but I was still happy to see him. He’ll be fun/the worst next week.

I thought it would be Vicki. After all, she perfected an Australian accent and I figured that come into play. Perhaps later, this was Chapter 27.

No, they were soulmates on many different attempts. After all, they had slept together at Mindy's place over a dozen times and even declared their love for each other. Mindy even installed a peep hole to film them going at it,.

So, what'd y'all think of Danson's Australian accent? Loved Janet's "perfect."

Mindy St. Clair said that they went to her a number of times. I don't recall how many times they had sex followed by the "I love you", but I believe it's fair to say that they were soulmates more than once, even though Michael was trying to keep them apart.

Welcome back show. You've been missed.

I wish they hadn't shown a bunch of promos for different NBC shows right before the reveal, including one for The Good Place showing Trevor.

I love this show, but interestingly, I've found myself annoyed that I have to sit through them coming together AND getting closer yet again.

I know enough to know I don't know what to expect in future episodes. But still.

Dammit, NBC!  I love you for supporting this show (and saving Brooklyn Nine-Nine), but did you have to spoil that Trevor was coming back in next week's previews before the final tag tonight?  Put a slight dent on what would have been a great reveal.  Either way, I'm glad he's back.  Any Adam Scott is good Adam Scott in my book, but I really love Douchebag Adam Scott the best (well, with the possible exception of Ben on Parks & Rec!)  I hope Vicki comes back too since Tiya Sircar's other show didn't work out.

Glad the show is back, and I loved the return.  I like how every season is so different, and this go around seems to be about the main four back in the real world, and hopefully learning from their mistakes, while Michael (and Janet!) watch and try to help out anyway they can.  I liked that all four of them sincerely did try to change and be better, but regressed in realistically ways, and I think Michael is right that they all need each other to make it work, and will hopefully prevail, even with Trevor's (and Shawn's) meddling.

Simone was a solid addition. I was trying to remember where I've seen the actress from, and I realized that she is Sasha, one of the acting class students on Barry, which also had D'Arcy Carden as well.  I wouldn't mind those two sharing more cast members!

"We Crumb From The Land Down Under."  Glad to see that being in the real world won't stop the puns anytime soon!

I was trying to read all of Tahani's contacts on her phone, and I think my favorite is Taika Waititi (New Zealand writer/director, who did Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows, etc.)  So random, but kind of makes sense.

Ted Danson was having a blast with the fake, bad Australian accent and the various goofy outfits Michael ended up in.

I do think The Judge will end up being a problem down the line (once she can peel herself away from her new Mark Harmon obsession!), and I suspect The Doorman will factor in more too.  Plus, there is still Shawn and his demon ways!  Marc Evan Jackson is comedic, deadpan treasure!

Welcome back to The Good Place!

Oh, I completely believe that Eleanor and Chidi ARE soulmates and fell in love over and over again. I ship it. (And I also believe that Michael and Eleanor are platonic soulmates.) I'm just saying that Michael only said that they were soulmates during the first attempt, as far as we know. All of the other times, Eleanor and Chidi had different assigned soulmates.

And D'Arcy can certainly make the most of very few lines. Agreed completely with her "perfect."

Loved the episode,  but I was bothered by one thing: They never explained how Eleanor was able to afford to pick up and live in Australia.  Is she a full-time student down there now?  Did she move?  Is it an extended vacation?  Does she have a job?  Her job at the nonprofit doesn’t seem to be kind of job that would pay very well. She is staying at a hotel so does that mean she’s only planning to stay for a very short time?  Is that going to be enough time to learn to be a better person?  When she talked to Chidi about asking that girl on a date, they  mentioned that she had been in Australia for three weeks.

In any case, I was impressed with Jason’s dancing.

I’m also curious as to what powers the key attached to the frog keychain will give to Michael when he eventually swipes it off the doorman‘s desk.

I thought Trevor was the best of the recurring characters so I'm glad he's back. The Tahani stuff was great. My favourite joke was "I was such a tomboy when I was younger!" I hate that starlets always say that in interviews. I suppose I just love all the little throwaway jokes about the specific ways people are awful.

I know this is nitpicky, but does anyone think Chidi is being written more broadly than he used to be? The point about his indecisiveness was that he thought he had to follow a perfect moral code, like eating the right foods that don't exploit workers or harm the planet, of planning a perfectly unproblematic bachelor party. Now it's just that he has no filter, which was never the point. It's that he was too analytical. Jason is still the weakest part of the show.

And everyone's talking about the accent thing but I'm glad the show addressed the inconsistency of Tahani being the sister of what supposed to be one of the most famous women on the planet, a celebrity-socialite in her own right, and no one ever knowing who she is.

Hot Diggity Dog! They are so much alike. Eleanor has pointed that out too somewhat disturbed that her behavior on Earth was on par with an actual demon, but Michael wouldn't have improved if it weren't for Eleanor coercing him to do so and then they both became better together

He is also the large blue toothbrush to her small pink one at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Janet even called him Dad. He was willing to no longer exist to save her.

So glad this show is back, especially today.

We got to hear Chidi speak French! And of course he speaks Latin, just in case it makes a comeback. I love him. Simone and Chidi are cute and Eleanor playing matchmaker is sweet, but I adore Eleanor and Chidi together. They figured it out hundreds of other times though, so I'm not too worried. And Eleanor doing something selfless for Chidi and Simone shows that she's growing. Though her pronouncing gif like Jif is probably why she went to the bad place.

I was wondering how Tahani and Jason were going to end up in Australia. Jason's scenes in particular were hilarious. The dance crew getting disqualified for having too many people on stage, Jason telling everyone to "go do crime." And of course Jason would think claustrophobia is a fear of Santa Claus.

I love Michael's excitement about the Pizza Hut/Taco Bell and how much the Doorman loves frogs. Janet calling the Judge "mommy" was weird and exactly the type of thing I'd expect from her. She misses Jason too, aww. Shawn continues to crack me up, turning everyone who annoys him into cocoons. That would be a pretty great power to have, honestly. Demons only having access to technology from over 30 years ago is hilarious.

So everyone is finally together in Australia, and so is Trevor! (Which would have been more surprising if NBC hadn't shown him in a promo three minutes before!)

So happy that this show is back! I feel like I really have entered the Good Place!

Love seeing everyone trying to improve their lives, only to fall back into old patterns without each other. I think it fits with the overall theme of the show, that people can screw up your life, but they can also improve it. It just depends on your attitude.

Michael's love of human stuff will never stop being adorably endearing. And him giving the celestial doorman a frog thermos was so sweet and heartwarming. I also loved the long bridge was the celestial plane to the doorway to Earth. It looks really cool, but without a huge budget. I also think the doorman will end up figuring into the plot somehow.

""It's not about who you know. Enlightenment comes from within. The Dalai Lama texted me that" Thats just so Tahani, its amazing.

I like Chidis new possible girlfriend, and of COURSE he knows Latin "just in case it comes back". And we heard him speak French!

Trevor is back to be the absolute worst! Cant wait!

I agree with you.   I loved these two episodes overall, but it really lagged when it was featuring Jason.  And he is just way too stupid to manage to get himself to Chidi and the gang in Australia without somebody holding his hand the whole way there.  Somebody upthread wondered how Eleanor was paying for her trip to Australia, but I can assume she has some money set aside from working.  (And credit cards.)  Jason, on the other hand... nope... I don't buy it.

But I hate to be negative because I really did enjoy these episodes and I continue to be so impressed with the creativity of everyone involved.  I love that they have been able to keep reinventing the world of the show so successfully.  This show is as expansive as it is deep.

Some of my favorite parts were Eleanor trying to get Chidi and Simone together, Michael and Janet in every scene they had together, Sean with his unrestrained 'cocooning', and the doorman's glee at receiving a frog emblazoned thermos cup.

I also really appreciated the way they tied the first episode into what we already saw in the finale last year, fleshing that out and showing how Michael prevented their deaths and then also how he was able to orchestrate their all getting together.

This was such an entertaining hour that just flew by.  I wish they would show two episodes every week.

"Zack Pizzazz" offered Jason an all-expenses paid trip to Australia, so I suppose that's how he got there.

Oh, I forgot about that... I kind of zoned out during Jason's story.  So Michael somehow paid for it... but I still can't see Jason making it all the way there without somebody escorting him the entire time.  He is just way too dumb.

But there's no point nitpicking something like that with a show this good.  (Jason is just the one thing I would change if I could.  I almost never find him believable and it pulls me out of the story.)

As a new-ish viewer, Jason's appeal feels very one-note. His stupidity is very endearing, but he's stupid to the point of narrative laziness. His scenes are always the cheapest laughs and feel like the plot equivalent of a wet fart. Maybe it was just because he was separated from the gang, but I found myself impatiently waiting to jump to anyone else. And Manny Jacinto's sexiness is very underrated and unrecognized in a doofy comic relief character. That smile...swoon!

Not sure how I feel about the potential love triangle between Eleanor/Chidi/cool science lady. Chidi and the new girl have a delightfully nerdy chemistry that I enjoy, so I'm hoping the writers will leave them alone to date in this mini-reboot without pining/tension/love realizations. Just let them be their own wacky fling on their own timeline and go back to the sappy epic love stuff later.

This show, this wonderful, intelligent, hilarious, beautiful show...

giphy.gif

What I really noticed tonight was, for all the focus on how the four humans need to be together to better themselves and each other, how essential Michael is to their success, too.  He was always the reason they improved each other because he was always the catalyst who brought them together, even when he was trying not to bring them together.  They can't succeed without him, and while that should have been obvious to me before now, I really had that epiphany tonight.  In some ways, I think Trevor's attempts to break them apart (or whatever awesome nefariousness he'll employ) will backfire in some way and bring the four closer together.

I'm SO glad this show is back!

I feel like this happens on other shows too, like in the LA Complex (a Canadian show!) where struggling Canadian actors just relocated to LA and never once sweated any kind of visa issues. And it always bothers the heck outta me.

TBH while I realize Ted Danson is core to the show, I didn't like how basically the entire plot was his machinations. That's wayyyyyy too much meddling. I know they already did some last season when he stepped in to nudge Eleanor to find Chidi, and I know it would have been next to unimaginable for Tahani and Jason to leave their lives to go to Australia, so I don't have any better ideas. But even so.

Trevor!!!! I'm so happy! It's gonna be so fun!

Simone is great too.

Michael's reaction to the Pizza Hut/Taco Bell was almost exactly like mine the first (and only time) I went to one.

Chidi's French is terrible, and glaringly so compared to his colleague's...

I too wondered how Eleanore is paying for her stay, but that's a minor nitpick.

Jason's dance moves were really good!

Trevor!

Why do I get the feeling the Judge is going to declare this experiment null and void?  Between Michael pushing everyone together and now Trevor showing up to mess with them it's no longer a clean test.  I just hope we see one of the angels - so far the demons have done their thing but we really haven't seen what the good guys think of this.

While I think this would be good to watch it wouldn’t make sense to me. The real Good Place has no stake in them. They didn’t qualify for the actual good place and “angels” so to speak may not even be aware they exist.

To me the problem wasn't that it took an hour (you exaggerate in sitcoms, and that's the whole point of his character) but we didn't see WHY he was indecisive. There was no context for it. In earlier episodes we saw why he'd take an hour tp choose a muffin and that was the point. His indecision comes from the fact that he's looking for certainty, to make the morally perfect decision, and he will never have a clear answer.

Eleanor did recognize Tahani's name and said she was Kamilah's sister. It was probably the same for Nicky Hilton, once you say the name people would go oh Paris' sister.  I loved seeing Tahani's face light up when Eleanor said she never really cared for Kamilah. Also when she asked if she wanted to stay at the motel with her then was like after seeing your whole thing, I'm thinking that's a no.

I missed this show and will forever love Michael's love for mundane human stuff. "A pizza hut and a taco bell in one building"

While I like Chidi and Elanor, I liked Simone and how she was completely down for weirdness of Team Cockroach. Chidi's decisiveness is really exaggerated but this is a comedy so I'll roll with it. Same with Jason being the dumbest person on the planet that is still somehow able to function. I also love Janet really using her new ability to lie when Michael asked if he nailed the Australian accent.

I was a little disappointed because i thought that the arc of the season was going to feel after-school specially with everyone learning to be better people, with a bit of a antagonist thrown in and then maybe the Judge gets involved near the end of the season.  And then I remembered what show I was watching.  I've got five bucks that says that by the end of the next episode -- maybe the one after that -- everything is changed again with the Judge fully aware that the humans are being given a choice between Trevor and Michael.  And then it will change again and again.

Which is what makes it so awesome.

Chidi's indecisiveness got amped up due to him feeling like he caused his friend's injuries and hospitalization.  Obviously, he's not to blame as exactly no one could predict such an accident, but it scared him and brought back all those old feelings from when he was a kid and couldn't pick between his classmates for fear of offending one of them.  The nurse's blueberry comment didn't help.  But he listened to Michael and has Team Cockroach back in his life and he's already doing better.

I love that Shawn's team were a bunch of hackers.  And every time he cocooned one of them I cracked up.  Then it turned out that they can still hear him when that one guy cheered for the breakthrough.  So forking great.

Trevor is going to be so much fun among humans.

Every season so far the first episode  you think this show is one thing but by the end it is something else.   The show has earned itself breathing room in getting where it wants to go.

Being alive but on their own I can see all the cockroaches falling back into their bad habits even with the will to change.  Watching Michael manipulate them all back into each other’s lives was sweet.   I am looking forward to how this plays out especially with Trevor in the mix.

For me, Jason is the heart of the show.  I think he has the greatest potential to truly become a "good person".  The others are pretty set in their behaviors; Jason could actually make a permanent change if only his IQ could be raised by about 5 points!  I find myself enjoying his segments of the show the most.

It took him an hour to choose a muffin before his friend got injured, though, and before the nurse made the comment about blueberries.

I assumed that he had some sort of ethical concerns about each of the different muffin options - like maybe one of them was made with the dreaded almond milk!
