amensisterfriend March 20, 2015 Share March 20, 2015 I just discovered this show and am totally in love. I'm a huge British mystery fan (suffice it to say I own every Agatha Christie book and the vast majority of the Poirot/Marple DVDs) and, while I didn't love the two Colin Dexter books I read or what I saw of Morse, I absolutely adore Lewis and (especially) Hathaway. I also love the Oxford backdrop and the overall feel and tone---unlike some Masterpiece Mystery series I've caught, it's not *excessively* grim and depressing, yet still cerebral and thought provoking. Which would you guys say are the best episodes/seasons/scenes of the series so far? Which ones should be avoided?! 1 Link to comment
photo fox March 25, 2015 Share March 25, 2015 I love it, too, and think you've captured why beautifully with your "cerebral" comment. Gosh, hm. I'm not sure I can pick favorites, because there are so few episodes that I'm always just so grateful to get new ones. I have special affection for Season 4 Episode 1, "The Dead of Winter", because it gives us a bunch of Hathaway backstory, and I loves me some James. I think the mysteries were probably better in the earlier episodes, and a bit more shocking. (Season 1 Episode 3, "Expiation", is... yikes! But amazing!) I think in the later seasons they try much harder to write plots that are surprising, and they just end up being convoluted. But the Lewis and Hathaway relationship grows so much throughout the series that it's hard to regret the weaker COTW. And I really enjoyed seeing Hathaway make the transition to DI in the most recent season. It's a perspective you don't often see on these shows (typically you see the wet-behind-the-ears detective with a wizened pro as a senior partner, not a newbie senior officer). 1 Link to comment
