Great song. And yeah, considering the real life inspiration for that song, I would imagine it was a pretty cathartic one for her to sing.

I heard "Building a Mystery" on my Spotify today. Another song of hers I love.

I did not realize it was about a stalker she had until just now.  Wikipedia and Google for you!

My memory of that song was in middle school.  The station the school bus driver had on that song would frequently come on when driving home.  While I didn’t know what the song was about I could tell even from a young age it had a sort of sad/serious vibe to it.

I was listening to "Fairytale of New York" my favorite Christmas song and thinking how sad that both Shane and Kristy are gone.  Makes the song even more poignant.

I was going to post this in the 'Songs that Make You Cry" thread.  Gonna age myself here: I was born and raised in NYC (primary and middle school years).  For secondary school, I was sent home to Ireland.  Fairytale came out in my last Christmas holiday in Ireland; this was also the first Christmas I didn't get to come back to NYC for the holiday.  So, the images from the video (Matt Dillon anyone??!!) and the images conjured up by the song itself over that holiday season had me super homesick.  Now, all these years later, it still gets me and I still tear up when I hear it.

And yes, with Shane & Kirsty gone it is even more poignant.  (I'll add Sinéad too, & Christy Dignam.)

Yeah, ever since the System Has Failed, I did not particularly like the way they incorporated politics in to almost every song...

Do you have a list of discographies you want to listen to or do you decide as you go?

Nah, I just decide randomly. Like for a couple of days, I've been listening to my country's local music scene what was new in 2023. Though, I was debating whether to start now with Rea or with Counting Crows, decided with Rea. So far, the first album did not disappoint.
