Y’all, don’t judge me, but I’ve been watching original recipe Hawaii Five-0 with Jack Lord (YUM), and loving it, even though I’m cringing at how the laws were back then that didn’t protect women, but since I am fully aware of the time period, I don’t lose my shit. Plus I just ❤️❤️❤️❤️ the opening and closing credits-BEST.THEME MUSIC.EVER! But I accidentally spoiled myself and learned the fate of one of the original core cast and now I get sad whenever I see him and know what will happen in three seasons! But I love how the show was shot entirely on location, and that aside from McGarrett, Danno, the Governor (recurring role), and the DA (also recurring), majority of the stars and supporting characters are Hawaiian and/or of Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Polynesian) descent. Not to mention today’s biggest stars like Martin Sheen! Tom Skerritt, Loretta Switt when they were just babies!

I HAVE to go to Hawaii now! One day...one day...

Whenever it was in reruns, I would stick around for the theme music before changing the channel.

It’s still in reruns-on MeTV.? I can’t remember if you get that or not.

My favorite part of the opening credits is that huge wave we see—all that BLUE and white foam! Groovy!?

Rats are very smart.  I have a problem killing creatures that are smart. Or have nervous systems.  About the only things I will kill are mosquitoes (because of the pain they cause me) and bugs in my house.  I hate bugs in the bath tub when I'm going to take a shower.  I don't mind spiders though.

Been watching the Breaking Bad 10 year anniversary rewatch.

Freaking "Ozymandias" is still one of the most gut wrenchingly awful and brilliant eps of TV ever.

Of course, "Granite State" is equally harrowing for Jesse.  Ugh. I forgot how painful the final 5 eps of the show really were and I'm wondering why I'm doing this to myself again.

I just read a hilariously snarky (and very spoilery) review at Pajiba.com of Maze Runner: The Death Cure (apparently debuted at #1 this weekend with $24.5M), in which the reviewer referred to Thomas (Dylan O'Brien's character) as "Blanden" and to Teresa (Kaya Scodelario's character) as "NotBella."

Arggghhh my kid has an assessment for kindy today and I'm feeling super anxious!!! What if he bombs???!!!

I'm even too fretful to post in the parenting forum because stories of kids doing well or badly are just going to freak me out even more.

It's going to be a long 13 years ahead! The good years are over ?

Knowing what you read to him, and the questions he asks, I'm going to say 'Not Bombs'.  Your kindergartens are going to have to be like grade8 for him to bomb.

I'm wishing him and you the best of luck though.

Thanks! Just handed him over and sitting outside his classroom twitching now. Here's hoping he doesn't crumble under pressure. His dad was notorious for choking in tennis tournaments at school ?

Don't worry your head,  I didn't do great at pre k or kindergarten, ended up being almost genius.   I'm not sure how au education systems work, but the the us's are flawed at best. Something taken so young is defintely not a judge of intelligence or character.

He's out! Everyone else is still in but they handed him to us and told us he's going to be fine and there's nothing to discuss.

I'm going to take that as a win ?

@Delphi he's no genius but Australia loves it's standardised testing so as a parent you've just got to play the game besides assisting them in the other aspects of life.

Yay!!!!!  Are you going to take him out for ice cream now?

He's got karate in an hour but I gave him a present (plush mushroom toy, the kid loves his fungi) and I've promised him ice cream after dinner.

Lol we must have looked so crazy the husband and I, sitting outside his classroom, smiling nervously at the teacher when she walked him out.

The kid seemed really cheerful about the assessment though so I'm super thankful for that!

Can.you explain what this was exactly? They tested him to place him? Are there better public schools/ pre-K/K options? Here it mostly goes by what school district you live in. Other than that people test for private school entrances.

Just curious, also interesting to see how different places does things.

It is a mandatory assessment conducted on all children commencing kindergarten. The letter that was sent home stated that it is a "process where a kindergarten teacher observes and records what your child already knows and can do in literacy and numeracy." At the parent orientation they kept saying it's not a test but will help them place the child in a suitable class.

That just screams to me they are going to rank the kindy classes.

I am probably more worked up than most parents because we want him to get what we think is the best education (we have some issues against private schools but I'll spare you the details). In Year 4 all kids can apply to sit for a test. If they are ranked in the top 10% of this test they can move to a school which runs Opportunity Classes which house all the "Gifted" kids. It's been reported that 80% of the kids in these OC classes then get into Selective High Schools (high school for academically gifted kids). Selective High School means better Year 12 test scores, means you can do any course you want at university and hopefully go on to live happily ever after! Lol I know it's not as simple as that but as a parent you try and set your kid up with at least a basic chance to succeed.

Anyways we are very anxious to see whether he can perform under pressure and to see where he ranks in terms of Kindy classes. Obviously he's our Pookums and we think he's wonderful but there is something to be said for standardised testing. It gives you a realistic picture of where your child sits in comparison to everyone else.

I swear we are pretty sane and nice parents! I know we sound hysterical but most of the other parents we know are like this. We are probably more chilled in terms of extra curricular activities. I know kids who started violin at 3!

@jaye.elle they have NAPLAN now in Years 3,5,7 and 9.

That seems like a lot of pressure to put on a kindergartner. In the US where you live depends on what school you go too. I think the only test was for the birthdays after the cutoff date on September 1st. Parents can have their kids take a test to see if they can get in or have them wait another year to start. Of course that could be why the US ranks lower on tests than most countries. We probably should start kids earlier. Lol.

My 7 yo niece takes tests all the time. My sister is always growling about them. Not that she’s taking them because they don’t tell the parents until after they take them but because she finishes hers fast and then gets in trouble for talking.

Recently they did a test to see how she learns, @statsgirl probably knows better than I do, and found out she learns by reading and not by listening or seeing how it’s done and that’s why she gets so bored.

I don’t remember ever having the testing they do now.

The Most Spectacular Eclipse of 2018 Is Tomorrow
By Jay Bennett   Jan 30, 2018
https://www.popularmechanics.com/space/moon-mars/a15875900/the-most-spectacular-eclipse-of-2018-is-in-less-than-a-week/

Quote

Once in a blue moon is only once every few years, but once in a super, blue, blood moon is just once every few decades. This rare alignment of three different lunar phenomena—a total lunar eclipse, a full moon at perigee, and a blue moon—will be visible in the night and early morning skies for much of the world on Wednesday, January 31.

During the total lunar eclipse, the moon will pass into the shadow of the Earth, blocked from direct sunlight by our planet, bathing Luna in a red glow that has led to the informal name of lunar eclipse totality: a blood moon.
*  *  *
The total lunar eclipse will be visible in the western United States and Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, large parts of Russia and China, and parts of the Middle East. Totality, when the moon will be cast a blood red, begins at 4:52 a.m. PST, peaks at greatest eclipse at 5:30 a.m., and concludes at 6:08 a.m., spanning an hour and 16 minutes. Unfortunately in the eastern United States, the moon will set in the sky before the total eclipse begins. A partially eclipsed supermoon will be visible in the hours before dawn, but to see the much of the blood moon, you need to get west of the Mississippi.
*  *  *
But the January 31 alignment of lunar phenomena doesn't stop there. The full moon on that date happens to be the second full moon of the month, or a blue moon. This astronomical occurance only occurs about once every two and a half years. However, 2018 is a unique year, and the solar and lunar calendars align so there will be another blue moon on March 31. (An alternate and older definition of a blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons.)

He attempted suicide back in August too.  He must have been in hell for some time.

The article said that he had  child porn on his computer.  Is there anything to suggest he produced them as well as consumed them? People who create child porn are the worst.

She could also be smart  and learns faster than the rate at which she's being taught.  It's a real problem here.  There are school programs for the very bright with IQs over 135 but that's less than 4% of the students The bright kids who are going to be our doctors and lawyers and scientists get very bored.  My daughter's friend who comes from English stock went to all day Chinese school along with the music lessons and the after school activities in her mother's attempt to keep her stimulated.

On a much happier note to celebrate the end of an era of the kidlet being home with me (preschool was only 3 days a week) we're going to a buffet (children are such good value at a buffet!) and then the wildlife park. I've also promised to let him try yuzu soda and he's beside himself with excitement.

He had his first taste of lemonade during our trip last week and he's freaking out over the fact that there is a fizzy drink out there....but in yuzu flavour ?

The CW orders Roswell reboot
NATALIE ABRAMS January 30, 2018 AT 08:00 PM EST
http://ew.com/tv/2018/01/30/cw-roswell-reboot/

Quote

The project, which hails from Originals writer Carina Adly MacKenzie, is based on the Melinda Metz book Roswell High that also spawned the original Jason Katims drama, which starred Shiri Appleby and Jason Behr, and aired on both The WB and UPN from 1999-2002.

Here’s the logline: “After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.”
*  *  *
The news comes just days after The CW also ordered a pilot for a reboot of Charmed, which has drawn some ire among the original cast.
*  *  *
Greg Berlanti has yet another project set at the CW with Spencer, which tells the story of a rising high school football player from South Central L.A. who is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High, and depicts the wins, losses, and struggles of two families from vastly different worlds — Compton and Beverly Hills — as they collide. The story is inspired by the life of pro football player Spencer Paysinger.

Roswell wasn't very good. Why the hell are they rebooting it? Jason Behr was even more broody and wooden than Stephen in Season 1 (funny enough, he comes alive when he's "evil") ... the main ship was a drag, while the secondary ship had more chem (Michael and Maria anyone?)

Spencer does sound interesting but I don't trust CW to be able to do right by it.

The Roswell one just sounds like a bad idea. I would prefer a Roswell reboot with Michael and Maria. I know the actors were trying to make something happen there, but zilch.

I'm actually interested in the Charmed reboot. I know there is controversy with the description deeming the original but I like the premise of three sisters in a small town fighting the supernatural. Reads like Buffy meets Charmed.

I'd rather a revival focusing on the original characters and where they are now. Still on the run? Settled into fake lives only to have Aliens turn their lives upside down again.

I was hoping Michael/Maria's reboot idea would get a shot.

I believe he just consumed and wasn't making child porn. What's scarier is, if this is accurate, I saw someone in response to the news, tweet that his daughter was among those photos. Someone had taken a photo of her at the beach and was distributing it as child porn. If that's true I feel sick to think it's not just posed situations but that parents can have photos taken of their kids in normal situations unbeknownst to them.

I agree those that create child porn are the evil who need to be stopped, because they are physically committing sexual abuse, but Salling being an audience member was still complicit in that abuse. And for that I can't muster some empathy for his family and for fans of his but that's about it.

Those pilots sound terrible. The only ones that are halfway decent are the football player one by Berlanti and the Roswell reboot.

And those two, along with Charmed, sound like they are the only ones likely to make it to series.

Personally I think the CW were idiots to pass over Sabrina and let Netflix carry on. But at least Netflix might make it halfway decent.

Totally agree about Jason. Shiri Appleby was decent enough but Behr was terrible and Max and Liz were the most boring and melodramatic aspect of the show. I much preferred Michael and Maria's storyline and Isobel, Kyle and Tess.

I really wish the headlines would make it more clear that the CW is ordering pilots, not necessarily ordering series. I have some very strong suspicions about what's up with that Roswell pilot, for instance - sure, that could get ordered to series if it ends up being any good, but as of right now, it looks more like a response to the ongoing Disney/Fox takeover/merger and less like a serious attempt to get Roswell back on air.

Those rage comments she mentioned aren't necessarily contradictory, but whatevs. I saw Majandra Delfino had liked or retweeted (can't remember) some shade, so I'm guessing she wasn't one of those giving her blessing. I would have loved to see what she and Brenden Fehr had put together and would absolutely watch a Michael/Maria on the run show with pop ups from Kyle and others. Alas, it's not to be.
