Out of all 8 stories, I enjoy the first 2 episodes the most.

S01•E01 — Our Little Sister

Theme — guilt, grief and PTSD.

This story has more sadness than creepiness and it ends with a twist. We all know dolls are cliché and bad news. Unlike Annabelle, that Elle doll is a manifestation of Aye’s underlying guilt and grief. The creepy part is… it smizes!

S01•E02 — Wedding Dress

Theme — unrealistic beauty standards.

The visual of protruding bones and the sound of bone cracking are effectively disturbing. This story has more creepy moments than “Our Little Sister”. In the end, ghost Peet gets her wish — walking down the aisle in her wedding dress to marry a man.

S01•E03 — Ode To My Family

Theme — family discord and feeling rejected.

This is one miserable family. There’s so much hostility between them. In the end, it’s a sad story about keeping everybody together. Win just wants a happy family. This story suffers from a cliché premise (haunted room) and the lack of clarity.

S01•E04 — The Vow

Theme — love and dishonesty.

Am glad the secret isn’t about cheating. It’s about feeling trapped and unspoken feelings. The only story with a happy ending and the least creepy. The Goddess of Black Hills can be a good therapist, seriously!

S01•E05 — Spectral Class

Theme — they are on drugs. Silly huh.

The weakest story. It suffers from a vague narrative. It relies heavily on gratuitous violence and cheap jump scares. The OTT wood-knocking sound and the caricature grandma make it worst. But hey, at least Oil manages to bring Nik back to school.

S01•E06 — Girl Next Door

Theme — loneliness, guilt and addiction.

This is one ambiguous story. We know Jane’s story, how and why she died. But it’s up to our own interpretation on how Bird died, either he OD’ed or he’s possessed by ghost Jane to commit suicide. He is stuck in the perpetual hell with Jane as it’s sinful to commit suicide.

S01•E07 — Dear Granny

Theme — loss and grief.

Grandma is found dead by the river. Nulek ran away from home then got hit by a car. Montha has resorted to using a shaman and rituals to cope with her losses. The grandma’s story and Nulek’s story feel disjointed. The use of heavy metal music gives slasher movie vibes. The final twist about Nulek falls flat.

S01•E08 — Viral Curse

Theme — poverty, overwork and parental neglect.

This episode pays homage to its source material. The flooding that we see can be interpreted as Ple’s life is flooded with problems. Ple blames Terror Tuesday for what’s happened to her and Kaew.

OVERALL — There’s nothing extreme about this series. It has enough jump scares and creepy moments. But it also leaves you wanting more. There are some memorable stories that affect you emotionally, the rest aren’t just terrifying enough. Talented cast but the plots are on the thin side. Most of these stories start on a very strong note but struggle to sustain the momentum and spookiness. Many stories suffer from the 40-mins runtime and their ambiguity.
