I agree, but they didn't institute mugging of the second to last team in the early seasons and they did away with it fairly quickly when it proved to be unpopular and encouraged begging.  It was not nearly as dramatic as TPTB probably hoped it would be.

    Can you explain "mugging"?

Just my opinion here, but there weren't really any good strong teams.  Sure you had Danny and Angie but they were mostly concerned in making alliances than winning.

Angie was the antithesis of "strong".

The way I split the difference is that I think cooperation between challenges is OK but during them it should be banned.

During Roadblocks it's against the rules for someone to help their other teammate in even the slightest way. Yelling out even something as vague as "count all the puzzle pieces" is banned. I think it ought to be against the rules to help another team as well.

However, two teams joining up to navigate to the next challenge, or a team leaving a challenge giving advice to another team about to start is OK in my mind.

It's like the difference between telling one team that the dance they're about to learn has a specific tricky step at the end, versus actually putting on a costume and doing the dance for them.

"Banned"?  "Against the rules"?  Do you have insider information?

Dear lord, I never realized how annoying Amanda’s voice is until this episode.

Her voice, her laugh, her enormous immobile forehead, all irritate and grate on me hugely.  Sorry to be so shallow, but she got so much airtime

    Spoiler

    in LCK

it was impossible for me to ignore her.

Carlos is getting better each year and we are all kinder gentler TV forum commentators now so I expect him to flip the switch from loud and obnoxious to….delightfully energetic!  That was weird to see that obnoxious Matt guy reappear on the first episode….it’s been awhile and he was so cocky before….would have loved to see how that smirk has transformed.

He's been on other things?  He was worse?

Is she the one who did the PNW inspired boil? I remember someone doing that.

That's the one.  And for once Bobby didn't rely on southwestern flavors.

  5. The episode with Kaleena on Beat Bobby Flay was just on here, so I bit the bullet and cringed my way through Sunny Anderson, who was a judge (normally I skip anything she's on).  Kaleena spoke about her struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, and how she hoped she could set a good example of facing your problems.  She smoked Bobby Flay with a seafood boil - yeah!

  6. Whoever it was deserved to go home for undercooked rice a couple of episodes ago.  Nevermind that it's often the kiss of death in these cooking competitions,  there was no excuse.  They chose to wait until 20 minutes before time rather than getting it out of the way.

In other unsurprising news, Carlos has been back to 150% obnoxious dickhead.

(FWIW my local affiliate just aired the episode with Maneet.)

I've had my weight commented on so much over my life.  I've been thin because I'm tall. I hated having it always an issue with other people.   As women, our bodies are always commented on.  My doctor says I'm healthy.

I'm so sorry for the struggles you have had. I hope you have someone nonjudgmental that cares about you.

Edit: There are people in my circle of friends that need those drugs to control their diabetes.

Thank you, yes.  I've been in a good spot for a while now and hopefully that's all behind me.

And I totally get people in your friends' situation and their needs.  What I hate is people who are trying to lose weight who go to their doctors and ask for drugs that are not designed for it and could have pretty severe side effects - a necessary evil for diabetes control, but not weight loss.

Another reason (along with the overuse of antibiotics) why pharmaceutical advertising should be prohibited again.  And I know, never going to happen.

  8. If someone is watching their weight, for whatever reason, the important thing is consistency in their own weigh-in routine.

Apparently, the best time is after you get up and use the rest room, before you drink/eat anything, before adding those 1 ounce worth of earrings.

If you're just going for a regular doctor's visit or, say, to the dermatologist, the doctor doesn't care about a couple of pounds' fluctuation since your last visit and just wants a longterm record, and presumably the dermatologist doesn't need to know your weight and you can decline.

If someone is having their weight medically monitored, that's a whole different issue and that's why we have real live doctors as well as internet forums.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I struggled with an eating disorder in the past, and the ongoing obsession with weight in the US upsets me.  When anti-depressants are advertised on the basis of their potential weight loss side effects, there's a problem in my books.

A couple of pounds makes a difference to me.  If I want to be annoyed that the doctor weighs me and won't let me take off my earrings and glasses I wholeheartedly reserve that right!

Do you take your false teeth out too?  😉

I'm old enough to still feel indignant that they weigh you with all your clothes on at the doctor's office.
If you're a petite person, a 3-5 extra pounds of clothes is about 4% of your total weight.
Plus, if you were a teen during the era of Twiggy…

Why be indignant?  If it matters to you, subtract those few pounds.  The doctor wants consistency, so clothes on every time makes sense.  (Take off your shoes and outer layers and you'll be close enough every time.)  Plus there are other things that affect weight all the time -  coming straight from lunch and drinking a boatload of water expecting to have to pee in a cup, being pre-menstrual, etc.

A couple of pounds is not going to make a difference if one is so overweight that it may be affecting one's health.

  11. I just gained an entire day!

I woke up entirely convinced it was Saturday and started planning my day accordingly.  It turns out it's not.

(Apologies to those of you who work M-F for whom gaining an extra work day would not be a thing to celebrate.)

  12. I hoped against hope that when Maggie went on the helicopter ride it was foreshadowing that there'd be a crash and she'd die.  Ugh.

ETA:  I posted the above while I was watching, before the declaration.  Double ugh.  I cannot stand the thought of Maggie and the pilot's mooning over each other every episode.

I gave up on this series once.  I should have quit while I was still only halfway behind, so to speak.

    He's showing thanks and humility.

However -- just speaking generally, this is a good example of how Marcel can't seem to catch a break from many viewers.

If he speaks from the heart, he's pandering. If he expresses enjoyment for the competition, he's arrogant. If he says he's playing for his mother's cochlear implant surgery, he's sucking up for the prize. If he shows appreciation or thanks, he doesn't seem genuine, etc.

Boldfacing mine. This feels like it's rephrasing what happened to put more blame on Marcel. Sure, Marcel was an irritating kid. But saying "people didn't know how to handle him" goes too far for me. And it wasn't a license to bully, attack, and physically assault him. All they had to do was shrug, ignore him, move on, be grownups.

I absolutely do not think Marcel was the one who "took things too far." He was a silly, arrogant kid on "Top Chef" who acted a little smug and who occasionally did incredibly embarrassing raps about his talent for the camera in his confessionals

Marcel wasn't any worse than dozens of other TC cheftestants in seasons to follow in his self-confidence. And he never abused, mocked, or hurt another contestant. Unfortunately, this skinny kid's self-confidence and arrogance was like blood in the water to certain bullying types like Betty, Cliff, Ilan, Elia, etc., so we had people repeatedly screaming in his face, threatening him physically, and ultimately assaulting him (a group-planned assault that was ret-conned in full cooperation with "Top Chef" to appear like a less-harmful spontaneous "we all want to shave our heads!" lark, when in fact, if you analyze it, the rearranged footage shows that they assaulted Marcel first, and then everyone shaved their heads so their stories were straight. (To be fair, Tom was horrified and genuinely wanted to send them all home and give it to Marcel.)

So anyway, sure, Marcel was absolutely a brat (in a minor way) 10-15 years ago, even if he didn't deserve the horrific bullying he received in response. But I do believe he's evolved, and I'm enjoying seeing that evidence here.

I don't know why there is something about Marcel that brings out such extreme emotions in people. He was treated almost as badly in the follow-up "special" Top Chef dinner TV event a few seasons later, for instance, as he was in S2 -- in which Fabio interrogated him about S2 (Marcel didn't want to talk about it), mocked him, screamed at him, and asked the cameramen to turn off the camera because "Marcel was making [him] look bad" -- meanwhile, he had further gone out of his way to stoke drama by making Marcel team up with one of his bullies, Ilan Hall, to cook a dish -- which he did,  very quietly and without complaint. Fabio tried the interrogation when that didn't elicit an emotional scene.

I like that Marcel is doing well, and I'm totally rooting for him. But I like several of the players and there's no one I can't stand, honestly, so it's all good.

Thanks for articulating this so well; I agree completely.

Do you know the Top Chef offshoot "The Dish with Kish"?  Marcel was on an episode recently and I found him to be pretty delightful.

It will never happen, but I want "The French Baking Championship" Romy, Clement, and Alex.  Game on!

If you have Netflix, there's a documentary full of them about the French Pastry Academy in Las Vegas.  It's about a truly extraordinary French patissier with a fabulous accent.

The Netflix show is called School of Chocolate.

I don't mind them not sending someone home in the final four if it really is too close to call, but that wasn't the case here.  There was definitely a top 2 and a bottom 2 - Nickey or Alec should have been out.

I really liked Alex all the way through and wanted him to win (though I knew he wouldn't, being French), but I felt he should have been sent home for his entremet.  Duff's face when he took a bite was basically, "What the ever-loving hell is this?"  And they all looked sad about it.  Later Duff said something about it being terrible - "it" being the whole thing.  Their complaint with Nickey's was that the sponge hadn't been soaked, ie, just one part of the entremet.

Oh, I blame the writers, but surely the actress could have found another commercial to be in.  On Reddit and other sites, the commercial has gotten a lot of negative feedback, and she should have known that would happen.

Maybe she, like many in the public eye, doesn't go on social media for her own self-preservation.
