It's been a recurring theme on all TV action shows since the early days of the old westerns (good guy gets hit in left shoulder and can keep fighting; bad guy in right.)  The only exception was Bonanza, where Little Joe was a leftie and always got shot in the right shoulder.  😀

Thank you so much for reminding me of Bonanza! A show I actually watched!  My crush was actually Adam, but he was in so few I almost had to switch to Little Joe.

  2. Seems every season there's a classically trained European who makes it almost to the end and doesn't quite get there.  I knew though the minute they each said what they were making that Alex would go unless Nikki made some huge mistake.  The one thought I had was maybe the meringue would be underdone given the time but no one commented on that.  It looks similar to a dessert I make - Thomas Keller's meringues - that's a riff on a deconstructed pavlova very similar to Nikki's.  That is my hands down favorite dessert I make.

  3. Finally we got to see some fashion, and some fashion insider / history.  I don't know why I had expected more of that and less of the ... other stuff?  I don't know.  I certainly didn't expect all that stuff about Coco Chanel - whose story actually got more screen time?   I did find Catherine's story fascinating and moving.

Also fun was Glen Close playing her 'Devil Wears Prada' character's precursor.

Note to showrunners - next time more of whatever the title of the show is about, and if you're going to make a show about a famous fashion person .. maybe show some fashion?  Would have liked a lot more of what was in the last episode and / or showing more of the creative process.

  4. So much to rag on in this show... One thing I did like though was acknowledging the CA wildfires. They typically don't bring in a lot or real world problems (seriously these characters have enough problems!) so I thought it was good to bring that in.

  5. OK so someone upthread asked if there had ever been a black woman winner, and I believe someone replied correctly that there had only been one (Amber Riley).  There have been three non-white female winners (Nicole Scherzinger, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Laurie Hernandez) who were not black.  This all sent this retired statistician down a rabbit hole exploring the demographics of DWTS winners, and then including 2nd and 3rd place (this list is readily available on Wikipedia).

Overall, the largest share of winners have been white women (39%).    For winners only, the next largest share is black men (19%), followed by white men at 16%.  For either gender, there have been 3 Asian winners and 3 Hispanic winners (10% each) and 1 (Jordan Fisher) of mixed race.

Looking at the top 3 places combined, still 39% white women but now 28% white men for a total of 67% white.  18% black men and 5% black women for total of 24% black.  This is not too far off of the overall US population (75% white, 13.6% black).  Hispanics seem somewhat underrepresented (4% of top 3 but 19% of the population) as do Asians (3% vs. 6.3%).

Take all this with a grain of salt - it's based on me looking at the list on Wikipedia and making some assumptions about race and ethnicity (and gender in a couple of cases - here I'm going with 'sex assigned at birth' which is what we were using in studies that I was working on when I retired this year).

So if we used race and gender alone to predict the winner, bet on Ariana or Alyson.  An Xochitl win would improve the Hispanic representation so that would be nice.  Jason and Charity hard to say.

Personally, I think I'd be fine with any of them although while I like Alyson she is not the best dancer in the group.  Maybe I'll actually vote in the finals...

Ask me your DWTS stats questions, apparently I have nothing better to do (or miss analyzing data more than I thought I would).

I thought the same thing.  (And I didn't even see JT on Colbert.)  And the song he sang had the same feel of You've Got a Friend.  If it were an actual JT song, I wouldn't be surprised.

Was this an original song Gordon/Scott Grimes sang at the end?

Yes this was a James Taylor song.  I recognized it immediately - I have this album (yes on vinyl) and listened to it practically every day for a while when I was in high school in the late 1970s - was it really that long ago?  Yikes.   Loved hearing this song again, and I thought Grimes did a good job with it.  My only disappointment was why weren't Clare and Isaac dancing to it?

ABC used to have a show years decades ago called Cupid that had a similar sort or premise (other than the main character thought he was actually Cupid). I used to love that show, but I don't think it lasted a full season

I watched that!  I think there were only a handful of episodes.

Probably not.   I love Midge but every episode this season has been a disappointment.   Last season had an actual story -- Midge  befriends Shy and earns his respect, Midge works well with Shy's team, Midge gets her big break ... and fucks up.   Not only did this season lack any story  but all of Midge's instincts were wrong and her choices were bad (turning down Tony Bennett) if not outright stupid (the Kennedy luncheon).   Consequently Midge's career went nowhere.  I think Rose had a better career arc this season than Midge did.  Maybe they should call it the Marvelous Mrs. Weissman.

I would watch that!  How fun would that be to follow a matchmaker around?  Different story every episode built in.  And more Rose with the fabulous clothes!

I really do enjoy the show but I’m completely confused by the mythology. Maybe because I don’t remember the first season that well? Who are the nilfgauard again?

I have no idea wtf is going on probably 75% of the time, but I'm still watching! I can't keep the names straight, I can't tell who is good and who is not... The finger snappy fire guy, Ciri's dad, the bearded dude running with Yennifer all look like the same guy! Still watching!

So much this!  Never played the game or read the books, but we're watching anyway!  I get help from this forum and on the Witcher Wiki they have recaps with links to different characters stories https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Witcher_Wiki.  I go there when I'm feeling particularly confused.

  10. So does Demerzel not have the three laws?  And if she does how did she poison almost-high-priestess lady?  I suppose Foundation was written before the I Robot series but still.  If you're going to just pull stuff willy nilly from various Asimov works should be consistent.  That needed explanation.

Glad there are only 2 episodes left. Hope it gets better next season.

  11. Just watched last night and am also hearing "Jamie Tartt" in my head!  I think it's how the kid picked it up immediately and was walking around singing it.  Disappointed Jamie had to disappear, but glad I waited until now to watch the show so I won't be in suspense about it for long.

  12. I see a heartfelt conversation between Bob and Dele coming up.   I think he is the only one who cares more about Dele's preferences than what is 'best'.  Hard to say what is best in this case anyway.  High pressure school but also time with sisters, vs being a standout student at a city public school and existing friends.   Dele would be a great candidate for a top US school and you know Bob would help with college expenses.

Hope he comes back to the US I think he adds a lot to the show.

I've been thinking about just how talented Iain Armitage is (as well as all of the cast), but especially him.  He's got a heck of a lot of complicated dialogue to memorize (or maybe he has some cue cards), but either way, having to play a character so advanced academically has got to be a challenge.   I hope that he doesn't get typecast into being Sheldon.  I still have a hard time seeing Jim Parsons in anything else.  All I see is Sheldon!  Iain has a long time though to do other things, so hopefully people like me can see past this one character.  😉

He had a major role in Big Little Lies, playing a very different character and knocking it out of the park.   I recall being surprised when I figured out they were the same person!  I think he'll do fine.  He is indeed very talentedl

Even putting aside the idea that his wife was a trophy wife--I thought she seemed like a good mom and someone that Grey's dad clearly cared about, so calling her a trophy wife seems a little harsh to me--I didn't think Grey wanted an exact copy of his father's life, but simply saw that the man wasn't in jail and was happy, so maybe his own life trajectory wasn't as downward as he thought it was. I didn't get any sort of "look at this former criminal now trapped in a loveless marriage that's just for show" vibes from it at all, and I can't see Grey ever wanting a trophy wife regardless. He just realized that maybe he can let go of feeling doomed by his upbringing.

I didn't think of her as a trophy wife either.  And I thought it seemed that both she and the half brother knew about Grey so I have to give the Dad some props for that.  I fully expect the half bro to turn up at the Bad Alibi for some reason in a future episode.

But, he didn't do anything wrong. It's not like they were "dating" and he dumped her. Or that he called her names, or was mean to her in any way, that we know of.  If they were going to have her do that, I would have preferred they give her a valid reason.

I wanted that too.  If the genders were reversed, that would have been way inappropriate.  His only 'offense' (that we know of) is liking a different girl.

Couldn't help but wonder if giving the woman the name "Laura" was a nod to the famous film with that name -- where a man falls in love with the portrait of a "dead" woman. First thing that popped into my head, but then, I'm a classic film fan!

Yes!  This is what I thought of too.  Could not remember the name of the movie thank you for that!

It's funny. Last week I wasn't liking Bernadette at all because I thought she was being such a bully, but it seems most thought she was more so in this episode and I didn't see it at all here. She was right to be skeptical about how well Howard would do all by himself with the babies, he immediately called in Raj to help and took a nap, and at her job she was delighting in being at work, but didn't say anything horrible to anyone. So I liked her a lot better last night then last week.

I thought the same thing!  I liked how they handled Bernadette this week because she articulated so many of the same things I felt about going back to work.  More so with the second than the first actually, because now I had some idea of what it's all about.  Particularly liked her complete about face on who should stay home.  Why there is no one size fits all solution.

  19. Really like the way the show is handling Franco and Sophia - got the 'will they or wont they' thing out of the way and now they're actually just friends.  Love that Sophia actually help him figure things out with no jealousy or nonsense.  Breath of fresh air show thanks.

  20. Been saving this show on DVR, just watched the first 2 episodes.  I actually like the 'church basement' setting and the minimalist feel.  I think it puts the emphasis on the food and cooking where it should be IMO.  No gimmicks, no sob stories (looking a you Chopped), no spin, just watch a bunch of super talented chefs doing what they do best.  I do agree they spend too much screen time on the challenge where it's just the two.

I do kind of miss the oddball challenges and travels they had on the first Next IC.  I think my all time favorite was making them prepare an airline meal.  It showed all the constraints you have to work under to prepare food that can be served on an airplane  (kind of in the spirit of Alton's cooking cardboard comment).  I don't know if the airline ever actually used what they did there but I thought it was an interesting concept.

Erica is not my favorite character to begin with, and her behavior in this episode was too ridiculous, and not in a funny way.  Does Carnegie Mellon have a good music program?  I always think of it as a school for STEM majors, computer science, etc.

CMU is mostly noted for STEM, but also has a very well known (and very competitive) music / theater program.  Composer Stephen Schwartz (Pippen, Godspell, ..)  is the one I always think of, but google 'famous CMU alum' and you will get a huge list including many recent Tony winners.  Erica would have been well aware of how competitive the CMU program is and it doesn't seem realistic for her to put all her eggs in one basket that way.  Actually, Penn State's music program is also highly competitive come to think of it.

  22. Nice to see Queen Latifah perform - although I'm not sure it will be enough to save this show.  I still kind of like it, although it's falling into the 'too soapy too fast' pit that drags down so many new shows.  You have to give us a chance to get to know the characters a little first!  Given the sparseness of the comments here, I was pleasantly surprised to see it listed as 'likely to renew' on Cancel Bear.  Still hanging in there...

  23. I sure hope there's a season 4.  I really enjoyed the season, except for the ending which I kind of hated.  Loved the addition of opera but glad they didn't do it all season.  I did watch the 'documentary' episode (which was actually filmed at Riker's Island with a real orchestra  http://untappedcities.com/2016/12/12/mozart-in-the-jungle-films-episode-inside-rikers-island-for-detainees/), and while honestly wasn't that crazy about the pieces they chose it was a great piece of film.  And set it up really nicely for the goofy ridiculous episode that followed.

Did ANYONE believe that she fell into the hole and died?

Honestly, I kind of hoped she did.  While she's kind of an interesting character, I just can't stand her pushing Walter & Paige based on about 2 minutes of observation.
