Thanks. Damn, looks like another writer then.

edit:  Duh, I can`t do basic math anymore. Somehow I came out with him doing 14 and 16 but it`s 15 and 17. So, excellent.

Going by writers and the general information we have, I only expect 1 or 2 good Dean episodes left this year. We are looking at a run of Perez and Berens and Yockey may be down to 1 more.  I'm going with 1 Dean, 1 Castiel, 1 Crowley/Rowena, 5 Sam's and the rest mythology (Mary,BoL,Luci, Lovechild,Princes and season 13 set up). Not saying those other eps won't be good but Dean's run this year is about done.

Now my question is, wouldn't it have been planned months in advance?  Like, as soon as they got a due date?  Why do you think that Perez wrote an episode that didn't have much for Dean to do, then they said, "Hey, did we get lucky or what that she gave birth when she did because Dean's not in this episode much at all!"

From everything I've seen of Jensen and Jared, I am certain that they told the showrunners immediately after they found out their wives were pregnant. I think they had a general idea of when the babies were due and they planned some Castiel and Sam leaning eps. They probably knew early on that Perez was stronger with Sam and scheduled his episodes accordingly.

I hope I'm misunderstanding what you're saying here.  But it reads to me like you're implying that Jensen would be deliberately unprofessional to not just the writer of the episode, but everyone who was working on it due to some (perceived) unhappiness with the writer.

Nothing deliberate at all. Jensen and Jared should get some time off when their children are born. I think there is a possibility that they wanted to give Jensen some time off and that Perez's strength is with Sam so it all worked out for this being a Dean lite episode. I do think that Perez writes for Sam (like Glynn seems to write for Dean). Those two might have been brought in to provide Jensen and Jared some down time through the year in different episodes.  BTW I would never say Jensen or Jared would ever intentionally be unprofessional.

When Dabb made Dean out to be a wimpy loser who easily breaks because a measly 6 weeks is worse than hell. Well, Dean`s hell at least. Yup, that was worse than not mentioning it.

I saw it that way at first myself but I've started looking at it a different way. I reconcile it by the fact that Dean was in Hell by himself. It would be worse for him in this situation because he knew his brother was going through the exact same hell. He could always think "at least Sam is safe" in hell. He couldn't in the prison. Dean's hell would be knowing his family was suffering and he could never do anything about it.

I mean I watch TV to see incredibly talented actors act out these things, not learn about them via poorly written exposition with questionable continuity.  I wanted to see her reactions and their reactions to HER reactions.   I would trade every moment of LOTUS for an entire episode of the boys telling Mary about their life. Make it a bottle episode/clip show and boom money saved. Story told.

That would have been brilliant (particularly LOTUS). They way they portray Mary is practically abusive.

To bad Perez is writing this one.  I'm guessing Dean having history with hell hounds is the next thing the show will ignore.

Judging by Jaxcon, Jensen came in very late to the shooting. I don't know if it was to have time with his twins or if it was just because Perez was writing it. There probably won't be much for Dean fans in this at all. On a bright note, the episode after is written by Glynn which I am very optimistic about. Just get ready because Perez has another right after :(.

I could handle that attitude, but how on earth did she hunt without John figuring out what was going on?  As far as we know (since I've heard nothing about career or job for her) she was a stay at home mom, I don't remember the exact date of that flashback, but I do remember when I saw it I said, "Where's Dean?"  If she's leaving him with neighbors to babysit in the middle of the day, (and I don't think you can go out on a one-hour hunt), it would get back to John and he would wonder what she was doing with all this time.  Although, I suppose that could explain why he moved out in the Dark Side of the Moon flashback.  And Sam and dEan are constantly getting banged up and scarred.  Are we supposed to believe that Mary is so awesome of a solo hunter that she's not getting hurt at all?  John would be bound to notice cracked ribs, black eyes, broken fingers, etc, etc.

You beat me to it, summed it up much better than I did.

She kept saying that but I think she is more like Sam and Dean then she would admit and CAN'T stop hunting.  If you recall the episode where Dean is back in time she hears about someone she knows that is going to be the demons target and she's all ok lets go and her dad says-she doesn't want to hunt but she wants to hunt? Or something to that affect. Its kind of like Its a Terrible Life-they weren't hunters but they HAD to be hunters. JMHO

It kind of puts a whole new perspective on the time Mary and John split up. I originally thought it was John's fault but looking at it now Mary was keeping secrets and going away to "tie up loose ends". John may have had the high ground on that one. I think Dean needed the idea of Mary much more than the real thing.

Technically, no.  She screwed the pooch on that one.  Had she shot her when she first walked in the door, then yes, she would have saved her boys. All she did was manage to get Dean the key to free himself and he saved them.  Except not really.  They had to be saved by Mick.

Fair enough. Let me change that one to saved and inspired the greatest hunter in Canada who could kill 5 Wendigo's at the same time all by himself.

  10. I think Perez redeemed himself somewhat from his first episode though he clearly seems to favor Sam (but Glynn seems to favor Dean so at least there is some balance with the new writers). So, random thoughts-

Loved: Got a bit of a squeal over the Colt and another after seeing Mark's back. Also glad they are back to fighting monsters instead of stopping for exorcism or magic handcuffs.

Liked: The Princes of Hell. They could be interesting and I'm hoping Dagon is a Lovecraft reference. Also, liked seeing Crowleys start towards becoming the King of Hell. Plus the Winchester boys taking out the monsters was a pleasant change (two episodes in a row).

Hated: I officially hate Mary now. She makes me miss Charlie (who I thought was a massive Mary Sue). So far Mary has killed the LoL that beat Dean and Cas, saved her boys from Toni, helped exorcise a demon, took out a vampire that Castiel bungled, helped Asa's kids take out a werewolf pack, hunt a shapeshifter, knock out 6 vampire nests, 4 werewolf packs and a ghoul feeding in Arlington ( all in 12 episodes). I just wish I could see those stories with the characters I have actually cared about for 12 years. Mary continues to be a horrible Mother. I used to think the tragedy was that Sam and Dean lost a loving family and normal life. Now I think it's that Sam and Dean were never going to have loving parents. I wonder if Samuel had succeeded in resurrecting Mary if she would even care that it cost her her sons.  Is it too late for Dean to call up Amara and trade Mary in for a Bobby?

IA. And Yockey has written Dean well so far also, IMO.

I like Yockey a lot but mostly because he seems really good at creating new characters. I'm curious if he will continue the trend of inserting the character into the episode title.

Overall, I consider this episode a win. Probably the last hurray for this Season.

I know it's real early but so far this season I have been most impressed with Meredith Glynn. She seems like a real Dean fan and she should have another episode this year. Other than her, Dabb usually throws Dean fans a bone or two in his eps. I'm hopeful that this season will have at least a few more good Dean moments.

Based on the last scene of the episode, I think Dean did remember exactly what she said. We'll see if it comes up again down the road.  I hope it does.

I think he does. I also think the flashback at the end was showing Dean getting his memories back. I do hope this helps bring Rowena into the fold. At this point, she deserves to be a regular and she brings a different skill set than Cas or Crowley.

Oh, and even more importantly: more often than not, they have a plan, they save people, and they kill the baddie.  Though that no kill number is getting awfully close (128 kills vs 114 no kills).

Let me second this is a great list. I have my own list of monster kills by character but I never considered plans or saves. I think I prefer Dean getting rid of the monsters because it seems to make him so happy. The Hitler kill carried him all the way to reuniting with his Mom. I don't think Sam gets the satisfaction Dean does. Sam just wants the danger ended up to and including a point everyone can retire. Compare that to Dean who's happy place is purgatory and who's main goal in life is to use a grenade launcher. I think Sam knows that too. If you look back over the seasons, whenever they burn a ghost's bones, it's Dean who usually does the burning. Like I said, I think it is something Dean needs (which is why Cain considered him worthy of bearing the mark).

Which brings me to the Grenade Launcher. So far it has been a really funny running gag but I hope they are planning to pay it off. I thought it was a budget thing but it obviously isn't as Mr. Ketch got to use his. I'll give it until the season finale but not using it this season borders on cruelty.

But I think there's one other point many people don't really take into account:  the family motto: "Saving People, Hunting Things."  I think Sam has more wins in terms of "saving people," Dean more with "hunting things."  They set that up way back in season 1, partly because Sam was supposed to be kind of rusty at hunting, so Dean was the better hunter; but when Sam started feeling the need for redemption, "saving people" became his main cause, and the reason he and Dean butted heads so much.

I never really thought about it that way but you are exactly right. It seems like Dean needs the hunt more than Sam. For Sam it's more of a job with the goal being to save as many lives as possible. For Dean it's much more personal. Dean's in it until he dies. Sam is in it until Dean dies.

Back to the Alpha Vamp, I hope he survives too but the synopsis doesn't look good. If the actor was available I think he could be a really great season long big bad. I always wished they had gathered the Alpha, Kali, Doc Benton and some random monsters that got away and formed a supernatural Legion of Doom.  But if the Alpha does go, I still hope it's by Dean or Sam.

Also what is Dean's specific history with Alpha Vamp separate from Sam's?

The Alpha's recruitment drive was the final nail for Lisa and Ben. Also, lying about the alpha was one of the sore spots between Dean, Sam and the Campbell's. Add to that the Alpha being inside Dean's head and that's more than enough for Dean to want to end him.

Vampire's have usually been Dean's thing. He was one, one of his best friends was one and they even called him Buffy in bloodlines. I liked that it kind of gave him a specialty that the others on the show didn't have (kind of like Sam's psychic/soulless specialties). I would have been equally disappointed if they had followed through with giving Sam the mark of Cain.

So yes, I would prefer the monsters to be ghouls or werewolves. However, if the alpha goes down, hopefully it will be by one of the brothers and not the MoL, Mary or whatever character they want to show is just as tough as Sam and Dean (and no ray guns).

Too bad, I like Dean in vampire eps for the most part.

I'm dreading this one. I get that Jensen should have time with his family but I wish they picked a different monster. Vampires have always been Dean's thing and if anyone is a vampire slayer it's him. Plus, I'm calling it now, Sam is going to kill the Alpha (probably with the ray gun). Given Dean's history with him, I hoped he would have gotten the kill. Given Berens is writing this one, I expect Red Meat:2 the reckoning (wasn't a fan of Red Meat).
