  1. From The New York Times, Oct. 12:

"The Nets’ decision to sit Irving for the road games that he is eligible to play in sets the stage for a potential battle between the team and the players’ union, which had already been pushing back on the league’s plan to dock the pay of unvaccinated players for games they miss because of ordinances in their home cities.

Irving, a union vice president, is due to lose about $380,000, or around 1 percent of his base pay for the 2021-22 season, for every home game he misses. Marks said Irving would still be paid for road games this season. The N.B.A. players’ union did not respond to a request for comment."

    No, Kyrie had not played.

    He is forfeiting his salary

Can't recall the per game amount, but it's more than most people make in one year..

I believe he is forfeiting his salary only for home games because it  his choice not to follow NYC's vaccine mandate.  He is available to play road games (there's no NBA mandate) but Nets management is choosing not to play him because it would essentially mean they have two teams (home/away).

Alternative history is not my favorite genre and this piece slams Lindbergh who was a real person, but never ran for president, and can’t sue because he’s long dead.

I do like alternative history stories, but I'm not sure how comfortable I am with the show demonizing Lindbergh this way. I know that he had some Nazi leanings but they are fictionalizing him in a way that seems like it shouldn't be legal.

According to this Slate article, the Lindbergh speech was not fictionalized:  https://slate.com/culture/2020/03/plot-against-america-charles-lindbergh-des-moines-speech.html

One bit I loved was when Roman asked for Laird's choices for "Marry Fuck Kill" for the executive choice, Laird's choice for "Kill" was Ray, aka the frat boy douchebag played by Patch Darragh who heartily enjoyed Boar on the Floor. Excellent choice, Laird.

What about Roman’s response to Laird saying he would marry Gerri?  Was it my imagination that Roman seemed a bit rattled at the idea that someone [else] would find Gerri a desirable partner?  And didn’t Logan say something about Roman wanting “to sleep with your mother”?  I’m probably reading too much into this because we’ve been tantalized with the Roman/Gerri dynamic this season.

As for who becomes the blood sacrifice, I vote for Shiv.  Not because of the character or even the story line; I just think that Culkin and, especially, Strong are much better actors than Snook and I’d like to see more of the two of them and less of her.

Every time Kendall said the "I saw their plans and dad's plan is better." it sounded more and more like the kind of propaganda that tortured POWs have to say on camera at gun point. His lips are saying one thing but his dead eyes are saying something else.

Raymond Shaw is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.

Mr. Kemper was listening to David Gura this morning and made a comment about how good he would be on MTP or Hardball.  With our l luck they would promote Alex Witt.

David is my nominee to take over the Morning Joe slot if Joe and Mika ever retire.   His show is very smart, he is very well informed and he creates a great salon-type atmosphere that would work at that time of day.

This has quickly become my favorite show on the network.  I like the format, with the panel sticking around for an entire hour (occasionally switching one person out) and the panelists are mostly terrific, as is David himself.  He's smart, has a sense of humor, and unlike most of the hosts on the network, he actually lets his guests speak without interruption.  I've never understood hosts (they know who they are) who ask a question and then talk over the guest who's doing his/her best to answer.  If he were to be given a weekday time slot, I would want him to keep to the current format as much as possible (probably none of this will happen since my wishes don't usually come true).

Can I just take a moment here to say how wonderful Emma Stone was? She's always been the sweet girl in every movie I've ever seen her in, and she was practically unrecognizable here. I feel a bit bad for Weisz, because she was wonderful as well, and they're both getting nominated in the same category and I don't necessarily know that Stone was better performance-wise than Weisz, but I feel like Weisz is going to get overshadowed because of the whole "what a departure for Emma Stone" thing. (Ye gods, what a run-on sentence that was.) But it's not like Weisz has played a bunch of parts just like Sarah - it's more that she's always played a range of characters and so she wasn't slotted as a certain type in people's minds. The one thing that helps Weisz is that Stone has recently won, for Lead, while Weisz has never won anything.

Weisz won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2005 for The Constant Gardener.

Plemons was also in S2 of Fargo.

Carrie C***, who starred in S3 of Fargo, played Meg Greenfield.  Her husband, Tracy Letts, played Graham's advisor, Fritz.  Letts also wrote the play August: Osage County, in which Meryl starred when it was adapted to film.  Quite a round-robin of notable actors!

And in 2013 Tom Hanks appeared on Broadway in the play "Lucky Guy" for which he was nominated for a Tony as Best Actor.  Hanks, however, did not win; the Tony went to Tracy Letts (for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf").

For crying out loud, what kind of a generation of unresourceful babies are we raising? Let's say you don't know how to get stamps or use the post office? So google it. Or call the PO and ask. I'm not buying this as a real obstacle. People who want to do something like this will figure it out. They can even ask their parents for that matter. Motivation is the issue, not the mystery of how to use the mail.

I missed Rachel's show but I assume she was referencing this article from New York Magazine.  It's gotten quite a bit of attention, for reasons which are immediately obvious.

Then I'll be not looking forward to the inevitable cliffhanger.

For a while now I’ve had the feeling that the show has taken off in a different direction in the second half of the season than the writers/showrunners may have originally envisioned.

Rob Yang (“Lawrence”) is billed in the opening credits but has virtually disappeared while Arian Moayed (“Stewie”), who gets guest billing at the end of each episode, has become a major player.  Peter Friedman (“Frank”) also gets billed at the top of the show; meanwhile, J. Smith-Cameron (“Gerri”), has had at least as much (and perhaps more) screen time but also gets guest billing.

I know that billing is part of contract negotiations and sometimes characters and/or storylines just take off in unanticipated ways, but I’m curious to see if there are casting/billing changes going into Season 2.

Why oh why is Shiv marrying Tom? He's such a nothing: no brains, no imagination, no common sense. It can't be just because she can push him around, she pushes everyone around.

Why is Shiv marrying anyone at all?  She's independently wealthy; she's happy in her career; she's never expressed any desire to have children at this point in her life (which she could do anyway without a husband); and she clearly doesn't take the idea of fidelity seriously.  I could more easily understand her choice of Tom as a husband if I could figure out why she's decided to take a husband.

Great win for Kerber. I don't think Serena played completely awful, but Kerber was running down balls that would usually be winners for Serena and didn't give away any free points.

The commentators are acting like it's the end of the world that Serena lost, but it's like get a grip. It's her fourth tournament back after taking a year off. Making it to the final was a huge accomplishment. I don't necessarily consider this a "fail" for her.

Anyone who beats Serena in a major is never given enough credit.  The post-match analysis is always all about Serena--how did she lose it, not how did her opponent win.

The real question is will Chris Evert ever make it back to daylight after having her head so far up Serena's ass for the last 2 weeks.

About 8 years ago I was in New York, and saw the play God of Carnage, which was Lucy Liu's Broadway debut.  Who played her husband? Famed HITG Dylan Baker (tonight's main villain).  Whom, of course, was also in the (very brief) TV series Book of Daniel starring Aidan Quinn.  The man gets around.

I keep hoping this series will bring back his wife, Becky Ann Baker, who played one of my favorite characters back in Season 1--the snow plow driver in "Snow Angels."

I also re-watched the scene where Connor sees the retirement announcement on the monitor, and the tech with him says that that added bit came through late and "he" (Kendall) said he was going to "wing it," which may have been another clue indicating sabotage, because I can't really see Kendall looking at this increasingly fraught situation and thinking it's a good idea to get up on stage and wing a speech announcing his father's retirement, especially since he's already worried about Logan doing or saying something to tank the stock prices.

Now, I'll admit that I do like Kendall, so I may be biased in assuming (wanting to assume) sabotage. However, going with this line of thought, I guess the prime candidate would be Roman, right?

My take on this was entirely different.  My impression was that Logan himself had added the bit about making a last minute announcement re: his retirement but with no specifics (e.g., "I'll just say a few words"), not wanting to give anyone a heads-up that he was planning on staying on.  Of course I could be wrong.

I hope that before this season ends we learn why Logan has such animus toward Kendall.  Kendall's the one who appears (at least to me) to have actually been involved in the day-to-day operation of the business while the other 3 kids seem only to be interested to the extent that it keeps them enjoying the lifestyle(s) to which they've become accustomed.  And yet Logan shows affection--or at least a resigned indulgence-- to them while he shows nothing but contempt for Kendall, to the point of actually marking his territory in the office (I don't for one minute think that he was "confused"; he knew exactly what he was doing, and why).

Again, I could be reading this all wrong.

I hope Halep is feeling better. They showed a pic of her in the hospital getting an IV. Does anyone remember the weather terminology that Chris and Johnny Mac were talking about and that no one has ever heard of? It determines if the roof is closed or not? I was more than half asleep during that discussion.

    Wet Bulb Temperature.  From Wikipedia:

The wet-bulb temperature is the temperature a parcel of air would have if it were cooled to saturation (100% relative humidity) by the evaporation of water into it, with the latent heat being supplied by the parcel.[1] A wet-bulb thermometer will indicate a temperature close to the true (thermodynamic) wet-bulb temperature. The wet-bulb temperature is the lowest temperature that can be reached under current ambient conditions by the evaporation of water only. Wet-bulb temperature is largely determined by both actual air temperature (dry-bulb temperature) and the amount of moisture in the air (humidity). At 100% relative humidity, the wet-bulb temperature equals the dry-bulb temperature.
