  1. I doubt Nonie is wearing a wig.  As a Seattle native, I can report that that is 100% a Seattle white lady look (though she has much more and better makeup skills than your average Seattle 45 year old), and Reece is so Seattle it almost pains me.

And it sounded like he's actually from a suburb - his family lives in Federal Way, which is 30-45 minutes south of Seattle and considerably less cool for a skater/artist/hipster.  Cooler to live in the van than in Federal Way.

  2. I've been binge watching this season of So You Think You Can Dance, and man, switching over to this is ROUGH in the dance department. You really get a sense of who's a legit dancer and who's a cheerleader with a few dance moves.

On the VK front, I really disliked her last year, but she was 19.  NINETEEN.  We all sucked at 19.  Her answer in the panel was genius, her dancing looks fine, and so far I haven't seen her do or say anything that would indicate that she hasn't worked her ass off and learned a lot through the experience.  So I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt, and hope she proves she's grown and matured both in her personality and dance skills.

This show has grown on me so much that I now listen to podcasts where they are being interviewed.  Just listened to one with Elan and Jenny, who is quite the chatterbox.  She dropped this little gem (intentionally or unintentionally) that Adan was divorced.  He got married but Fernando and Mari made him get divorced because it would “no one wants a pop star to be married” and would get in the way of his success.  Jenny is still friends with the ex.  It may or may not come out in the show.   Elan said his parents are way over the top as are most of the people on the show.  Oskar basically said the same thing. What you see is what you get.

Thanks for mentioning the podcasts.  I listened to interviews (the ones I found were on Reality Life with Kate Casey)  with Oscar and with Jenny/Elan and they were great.  Really enjoying this show.  I still think it's weird how they all speak in English all the time and most of them seem to be only part time in Mexico.

  4. I felt like I needed to watch a couple episodes to remember all the characters for the podcast, and MAN the fashion is awesome!  I am particularly impressed by Vanessa Williams workout gear - wrestling singlet with houndstooth belly shirt WITH A WIDE LEATHER BELT.  Ah, 1992, I love you so.

  5. I googled to see if, as I suspected, David got taken for a ride on that dowry thing.  According to these guys,  "an average middle-class, university-educated Thai lady deserves a dowry of 100,000- 300,000 baht.  Thai dowry prices fall drastically if your bride-to-be has been previously married, already has children, or is not a virgin anymore. In fact in most of these instances, no dowry deserves to be paid. Thai dowry, however, is usually symbolic in nature and will normally be returned to the married couple after the wedding, so as to help them start on their new life. "

Nothing symbolic about this family's $500K baht extortion effort, and more power to them!

  6. I wonder how many calls to Child Protective Services are made by viewers of this show?  Molly definitely needs a visit, that guy has serial killer eyes.  Also I'm dying to get that adorable May into a Head Start where she'll be safe and stimulated all day in a developmentally appropriate way and her mom can get some counseling.  How old is she now?  She does not seem like she's progressing like she should.

Jorge is super creepy and that situation reminds me of this.

  7. Are they dropping these people in exactly the same spots when they turn the wheel?  I really like that idea - it's always a debate on other shows like Alone or Naked and Afraid or whatever about whether certain people have been given an undeserved advantage by where they're dropped.

Is this serving as the episode thread as well?

  8. Filmed in Eatonville & Pack Forest (I suspect they're staying there considering how few hotels exist up there), where I held a training once until I figured out that it's at the back of freaking beyond.  When I saw Mount Rainier I started googling and found this.

OT - I was a huge Trixie Belden fan - I kind of have a fear of picking them up again for fear that they were really terrible and I just have low-brow taste.  I'll find out when I foist them on my niece, I guess!

  9. Really enjoyed the first episode, though I fear that though it was very satisfying to see the douchebag lose first, he's got a lot more personality than most of the contestants so it could be a little slow.

Also was thrilled to recognize the landscape - Mt. Rainier!  Gorgeous area, but brrr, cold and wet in December when they filmed.
