Do people under 50 actually know the words to "Sweet Caroline"?  I didn't buy it with those 2 guys, despite the esoteric coffee conversation.  And it was better when Howard & Amy bonded over Neil, and in the car singing it on "Big Bang Theory".

I wanted to see what Sue Lynn was knitting.  Her movements were almost right, but as a 40+ year knitter, we are super critical group when we see a character knitting on TV.  (Marilyn on the old show "Northern Exposure" still holds the title as Completely Legit").

I'll watch episode 2.  They need to really bring it, though.

I'm under 50, and I know some of it.

Jake Johnson’s really getting typecast as a bartender though, huh? Lol

It seemed like most of the scenes he was in with Dex, one had to mention they are just "friends". I think Stumptown is meant for his chances of getting with her.

I don't have any problems with Dex beating up (somewhat) two guys. Those two might be bigger men, but they're not exactly in shape, and Dex is a former military veteran, so she's trained in combat.

Also, as any martial artist will tell you, size isn't always everything in a fight.

(EDIT- Google tells me Cobie Smulders is 140 pounds. Make that of what you will)

What I did take issue with is that Dex decided to fight the two guys while they were driving the car. Perhaps she realized she was in a life-or-death situation and simply said "screw it, I'll take my chances" (that, and Dex sure doesn't seem like the type who "thinks things through"), but taking on a driver while they're driving a car is super risky. It could have ended a heck of a lot worse.

One other thing about the pilot- it may have been a writing mess as it packed way too much into the episode...but it does seem like there's quite a bit of conversation that's come out of it. So maybe that's a good sign going forward.

Or watch baseball…….  or have seen the movie "Fever Pitch"….. Also, my parents are huge Neil Diamond fans, also, in the 2000s I worked in retail and met a 16 year old who was a huge Neil Diamond fan.  It's a popular song and far from obscure.  Something I've learned hanging out with a lot of musicians is that no matter how young people are they will blow your mind with their music knowledge.

I've been looking for a new Castle since that went off the air -- just a silly procedural with romantic elements that I can turn my brain off and enjoy. I thought Take Two was going to fit the bill, but that got cancelled, and Whiskey Cavalier did as well, so this may be the one! So far I find it amusing, so I'll stick with it for now.

I hope they really do explore Dex's bisexuality (and not just in an offhand "every so often she says a woman is hot" way). We don't see a lot of bisexuals on TV dating both men and women. Having two male love interests right off the bat (one of whom was apparently a woman in the novel) isn't a great start, though.

I tried.  I know pilots can be shaky, but I'm out.  Plus, the name Stumptown is stupid.  (Same thing with "Bluff City" Law.)

"Stumptown" has been an actual Portland nickname since the mid-1800s. I actually knew that before the show came around, heh--it's how I knew the show was set in Portland when I caught nothing but the title at the end of a promo months ago (current Oregonian, former Portland resident). It makes sense if you know anything about the Pacific Northwest or Portland specifically. And I'm jazzed to have another series set up here...I get a little tired of New York!

(btw, Memphis, TN being nicknamed "Bluff City" way predates that show, too.)

I was surprised by how much I liked it. I don't know if I'll watch the entire season, but i found the pilot engaging with enough action and backstory to get me interested in these characters. And I was happy to see Donal Logue is up next week. I love him!

I went from “This is fine, I’ll catch it again” to “Oh, I am ALL IN” at the sight of Donal Logue. I keep catching random elements of bygone shows I loved — Dex’s insanity (and stable, kind-of-crushing-on-her best friend) is reminiscent of In Plain Sight, Michael Ealy was also a detective in Common Law, I’ve loved Donal Logue since Life — so the nostalgia alone will likely keep me hooked for a few more episodes.

this comes on the same time as AHS so I won’t be watching it live.  Other then that it is fun action fluff.

i like Dex and her relationship to Indian casino lady is probably the most interesting thing for me.

i  like these troubled lead shows and am really happy that the lead is a female.  And Cobyn has plenty of charisma to pull off the roll so I am in.

My kids (under 30) know the all the music of the 60's and 70's rock icons - and I knew the Jimmy Rodgers catalog when I was a kid (he died before my father was born), so it pretty much depends on what music you grew up with, at least in my experience.

I dunno, I kinda liked it.  (I also like Michael Ealy and Cameron Manheim. And Donal Logue.)   I did enjoy the (patently silly) getaway drive, though.  :)  Damn tough car still being driveable after all that.  But yes, i lost track of who was conning whom by the half hour mark.

I had a little trouble understanding some of Ansel's dialogue, but I expect that will go away as I hear more of him.

I wanted to see it too, but wasn’t watching real closely... because I was knitting. It does bug me though when characters who are supposed to be knitting obviously don’t know what they’re doing.

(Don’t even get me started on that line in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina about a character knitting their own death shroud when they were clearly using a crochet hook...)

I’ve taken entire sets of interchangeables. Franklin Habit often posts pics of his knitting progress on flights. Maybe it’s straight needles that aren’t allowed?

I would like to see Sue Lynn take somebody out with her lethal pointy sticks!

Yep, straights and double points are forbidden.  After having to toss a nice pair of bamboo straights to be allowed on a flight, I decided to hone my crochet skills when flying.  I just can't get comfy with circulars!  Luckily, I rarely fly anymore.

I tuned in late. Nothing else was on so I flipped it on and sort of watched. I didn't know any of the actors and didn't have a clue it was a comic until I read it here. So I came in with no expectations. It was all new to me.

The two dudes singing Sweet Caroline were hilarious, I loved that part. I wondered how Dex got from the trunk to inside the car to spray the extinguisher, but it's been a long time since I've driven a vehicle with a trunk. But during that scene, I kept wondering why the driver didn't step on the freaking BRAKES for pete's sake. I know, I know, drama and all. But that's what I would have done instead of continuing to drive fast and steer around obstacles while being choked. My feet still would have worked.

I also didn't like the after-fight makeup. Dex got her head smashed into the side of a car and she ends up with a couple of red scratches and not one single bruise? That irked me for sure. At least give her a black-and-blue cheek or something, it can be gone by next episode Makeup People. Instead, it just looked like her cat gave her a smack on the cheek. Someone smashes my head into a car and I'm down for at least a month, with a swollen face and one heck of a headache.

Add me to the list of those who want that tape player to be a regular character. If it is, I'm in.

This was a lot of fun. The set up kind of reminds me of Burn Notice with a combat veteran character helping people with favors that are sort of outside the law in a city that isn't normally featured on tv. Plus Cobie Smulders makes it potentially even better.

I never read the Stumptown comic but I have read a lot of Greg Rucka stuff. He usually writes pretty good women characters. Queen & Country and Whiteout were both awesome. Too bad the Whiteout movie suuuuukkkkkked.

The only thing I did like was how the Mustang wasn't destroyed after that huge jump. That was some Dukes of Hazzard level bullshit right there.

Unbelievable recovery from serious injuries is par for the course on TV, but it always bugs me too, so if there is going to be a lot of fisticuffs, I won’t stick with it. Plus, car chases and shootouts bore me. I like the characters and the actors who are playing them, but I’m afraid they will just be vehicles for the action sequences.

I had super modest expectations for this show, and I thought it was a fun start with a few genuinely good bits.  It was overstuffed with background, a chronic problem with network pilots, but it was still better than many.  If it can move past a few cliches and give itself time to breathe, it has potential.

The supporting and guest casting caught me off guard - lots of enjoyable character actors that I hope to see recur.  And Donal Logue is upcoming?  Better still.  If this became a stealth sequel to Terriers I wouldn't mind.

I know the chorus when it starts with the reaching hands...just like everybody else in the free world.

Glad to know others were paying more attention to her knitting than the actual dialogue.  Straights?  What the hell, Sue-Lynn, you can afford some circulars!

ETA:  When she picked it up from the desk when speaking to the cops it looked like a garter stitch baby jacket.

Northern Exposure, God I miss that show.  I wish they'd get those music rights sorted out so it could be back in general circulation.

Speaking of music rights, anybody else watch with closed captioning on?  When Don't Go Breakin' My Heart was playing, the CC was giving the lyrics to Love Will Keep Us Together.  I wonder if that was supposed to be the song and they pulled it for some reason after the CC was completed.

I'm not putting this on my DVR playlist.  I'll record manually each week and pretend I don't like it so that it won't get canceled.  You're welcome.

ETA:  When did Donal Logue become Brendan Gleeson?

Yes, Donal Logue is worth tuning in again for next week. I wonder how big of a deal he’ll be, or if the promo monkeys  just barely managed to get him into the previews to boost ratings (which is their job).

Longmire was the show I was trying to recall that this show was reminiscent of, in that I finally and completely bailed on Longmire after one uniquely disturbing violent episode, and I’m wondering if I should wait and see with this show, or if nightmarish violence is bound to ensue, despite this show’s lighter moments —because this show is no HIMYM.

Finally got time to catch this and it was pretty much what I expected.  Decent enough pilot that is hurt by some of the trappings that tend to happen with network pilots (overstuffed, tonally still trying to find itself, and rushed introductions), but Cobie Smulders is able to elevate most of it.  She definitely seems to be a great fit for Dex and I'm glad to see her getting a lead role like this (especially since the MCU doesn't seem to do Maria Hill justice.  She deserves a Disney+ show, dammit!)  She just has that charismatic presence about her that makes her work as a lead character, but also has the chops to pull of the more dramatic moments.  Looking forward to seeing what she does with the character going forward.

Good supporting cast too.  Jake Johnson was pretty much in his wheelhouse, and it is always good to see Michael Ealy, even if reminds me about his time on Almost Human and being disappointed that it didn't work out.  I do hope Camryn Manheim's character has more to do later on, because she seemed wasted here.

Not overtly-familiar with Portland (unless its Grimm.  Or Leverage.), so I wasn't expecting whole Native American casino/reservation plot, since I didn't know that was in that area.  Still, Tantoo Cardinal is always welcomed and I always like it when shows go into the murkiness that goes on between the city cops and the reservation officers.  Plus, that hopefully means we'll be getting some appearances from some of my favorite Native American character actors.  I want Wes Studi, Graham Greene, or Zahn McClarnon here, dammit!  Hell, I'd take Adam Beach too!

Donal Logue showing up (hopefully soon) is another nice incentive too.

I'll definitely give it a few more episodes.  It's the only pilot so far this season that I remember enough to post about (I swear, I saw both Prodigal Son and Emergence, but I can barely remember either of them...)

I thought for a pilot, they made an excellent choice with the opening bit - where you have no idea what is going on, but it's fun. I don't generally like the action starts and then "three days earlier..." but this one really worked for me.

Zahn was also in a season of Fargo, where he was quite different and I had to keep reminding myself not to be in his corner.

Other than Tantoo, the show doesn't remind me of Longmire at all - but we all key on different things. If it means we get guest and recurring appearances by the Native American actors who appeared in Longmire, I am all for it. They were my favorite part of Longmire.

I'd like to say that since this is a network show that we won't see quite the nightmarish violence we saw on Longmire (which was AMC, I believe, at least at first), but I think the networks are probably increasing the violence as well.

Most of what I remember about Longmire is the impending dread that I felt after I went “hey this show is pretty good, maybe I’ll check out the books” and realized that this was one of those wish fulfillment power fantasies where the fat 60 year old male protagonist hooks up with a woman half his age.

I do vaguely recall that it was one of the few shows that portrayed Native Americans not as a vaguely sinister and amorphous group involved in organized crime/at odds with the white protagonists, though.

That's fair. It was my very least favorite part of the show (beating out the violence, even). I hated, absolutely hated, the ending of the series because of that (and a couple of other things, but that's not relevant). I tried reading the books, but they didn't grab me.

So I focused on the Native American stories in the show, for the most part.

As for the violence, if the comics are any indication Dex should solve most of her problems with her mind rather than her fists (although there are only three comic arcs and this is network TV).  She’s not really the type to go all John Wick on baddies, no matter how much I’d like to see Cobie Smulders mow through a pack of bad guys like a scythe through wheat.  At least, not unless you really piss her off.

Speaking of which, I wonder if the show is going to get into the football culture of the city because that’s a huge part of the third comic arc as well as Ansel’s interests.

Not Adam Beach, he was easily one of the worst, if not the worst character I have seen on any Law and Order show. And considering this show has some procedural elements it would remind me of that. Although it would be cool to see the guy who was the voice of John Redcorn and was the tribal chief on Parks and Rec.

Also speaking of people this show needs to get and considering that it already reminds me of Burn Notice, they need to get Bruce Campbell to show up as Dex's old army buddy or even CO. He is awesome, plus Ash vs Evil Dead got cancelled and Bruce even lives in Oregon.

Do most people under 50 NOT know Sweet Caroline?!? I’m not even 30 and I’ve known it my whole life! It was also a popular “bar song” when I was in college about five years in various college bars, so I think it’s a pretty well known song in general.

Just once?

Guess I can't really make that complaint about this series since its source material is a comic and the writers likely had no choice but to name their lead "Dex"...but, next time Hollywood, when you create a badass female, try giving her a female name.

Please?

This show doesn't seem like it's aiming high enough cerebrally to really deal with that. Hopefully this is mostly just a Pilot Exposition Fairy effect, and we won't be expected to watch Dex flashing back multiple times per episode.
If that happens, I will find something else to watch.

Yup. I had hoped it was going to be more like Veronica Mars. Who had her tortures but was too smart to be brought down by them or to bring down others with them. Veronica always outsmarted the baddies rather than having me have to balk at a 90 lbs teenager taking on two much larger men.

Veronica never would have been hired to find someone and not looked to make sure no one was following her first. And she was 16 and had to go to school every day. Once you see a female PI like that you just can't go back to the bad old days... you know?
