Jessica Gao on the show and Madisynn as a breakout character:

Quote

TVLINE | If you had know at the time that Madisynn (played in Episode 4 by Patty Guggenheim) was going to blow up the way she did, would you have squeezed her into the finale, to give us one final encore?
She was definitely a favorite character, but we wrote the whole season before casting it. We all were delighted with this character but never in writing her did we think that she would go that big. It wasn’t until Patty Guggenheim was cast and we saw her work that we were like, “Ohhh, this is going to be the breakout character. It’s now the Madisynn Supremacy.” But by then we were already midway through shooting. But if i had known it was Patty Guggenheim from the beginning, she absolutely would have been in not just the finale, but more episodes.

She-Hulk Finale: Revenge Porn, Daredevil and Jen's Future in the MCU | Interview
IGN    Oct 19, 2022

We sat down with She-Hulk: Attorney At Law EPs Kat Coiro (director) and Jessica Gao (head writer) as well as She-Hulk herself, Tatiana Maslany to discuss the big bomb they dropped in the series’ penultimate episode, introducing both female sexuality and a very new version of Daredevil into the MCU, and where they hope to see She-Hulk go next.

‘She-Hulk’: Charlie Cox Talks the Return of Matt Murdock and Daredevil
BY RACHEL PAIGE    October 19, 2022

MARVEL.COM: I know that originally it was very TBD if Matt Murdock, let alone Daredevil, could even appear in She-Hulk, and that was very late in the game decision for the show. Do you remember any of the early conversations you had when it was first discussed that the character—

CHARLIE COX: I I didn't know that until recently! When I read that, I read that in an interview that [head writer] Jessica Gao did, and she had said that. I had no idea.

From my perspective, I got a phone call from Kevin Feige in 2020 saying “Would you consider coming back and playing the character again? If so, we'd like to put you in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and we'd like to put you in She-Hulk.” From my point of view, it was just suddenly, that was what the next year of my life was going to look like which was incredibly exciting and overwhelming, emotionally overwhelming, as you can imagine, having not heard from— not spoken to anyone or heard from anyone about the character for over two years.

I didn't know all that was going on behind the scenes. I didn't realize that there was a moment when they didn't think I was going to be able to be in the show. I'm just grateful that it all worked out.
*  *  *
MARVEL.COM: Your time in Episode 8  is almost evenly split between Matt Murdock, lawyer, and Matt Murdock, Daredevil. Who were you most excited to step back into the shoes of? Was it Daredevil, or was it Lawyer Matt, or are they just one and the same right now?

CHARLIE COX: I was really excited about the new suit. I was really excited to put that on and to give it its first outing. and like they say, if you buy a new car, stretch its legs a bit to see how it fits and moved and all those kinds of things. I was really excited just to wear it, just to sit around wearing it. But in terms of the character, I think of them as the same person, just the same person who's in two different frames of mind.

It's really more about the scenes. It was really fun to do the scene at the bar as Matt Murdock with Tatiana just because of the nature of that scene and how quick-witted and funny it is and flirty it is. I was really excited about that. In general, we haven't got to see enough of Matt doing.

But then also he had this really funny back-and-forth banter kind of frustrating conversations with She-Hulk on rooftops and stuff, and that was something we'd never done. The closest we'd had to that was maybe the rooftop scene with Punisher [in Daredevil Season 2]. But that was anger and frustration, and I'm tied up, and so this was a whole different side to Matt that I was excited to explore and experiment with.

MARVEL.COM: How does it feel to play this new Matt who doesn't have the weight of the world crushing down on him anymore? He's very confident. He's very charming in She-Hulk.

CHARLIE COX: I talked a little bit to Marvel Studios about where does he come from? Where's his headspace at? What's going on? I don't think we really knew what was going to happen next. When we were shooting it, I certainly didn't know about a new Daredevil show, I think [Marvel Studios] was figuring out what's the next right thing for this character.

So the way that I like to think of it was that no matter what's going on in his world in Hell's Kitchen, when he comes out to do this little job, which is defending, representing Luke Jacobson in this trial, he kind of sees it almost as like a little bit of a holiday. So his frame of mind is that he's just out of sight, out of mind from all the stuff that —  whatever is going on in New York right now, he's away from that for a few days while he takes care of his case.

While he's there he feels a weight lifted, and he's able just to put that to one side mentally and just enjoy himself. Then there's this kind of fun little romance going on, and then he gets roped into all this stuff with Leap-Frog as we see the episode kind of develop. I kind of saw it as a different side to Matt but maybe not because he's different from who he has been in the past or will be in the future, but mainly because it's kind of Matt Murdock on holiday a little bit.

Marvel TV Shows, Ranked: WandaVision, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Loki and Other MCU Fare

5  SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW
...
Aug. 18 – Oct. 13, 2022 | 9 episodes

THE HIGHS: Tatiana Maslany, Tim Roth, Benedict Wong and Ginger Gonzaga. The smashing of fourth walls. Hulk returns to Sakaar! Patty Guggenheim as Madisynn “But It’s Not Where You Thiiiink” King. “Avongers.” Charlie Cox suits back up as Daredevil! That mega-meta finale.

THE LOWS: Wildly inconsistent CGI. Low stakes. Charlie Cox isn’t playing the exact same Daredevil. Did too much (OK, all) of the Hulk/Skaar story occur off-screen? Was She-Hulk’s biggest fight actually against her own cousin, way back in Episode 1…?

8. SHE-HULK (2022)
...
Jessica Gao’s series She-Hulk has a whole lot going on in its first season — too much to fully cohere by the end, though its week-to-week attempts to balance a legal drama, a fourth-wall-breaking comedy, and a wry running commentary on societal sexism are still a lot of fun to watch. As the title character, Jen Walters/She-Hulk, Tatiana Maslany carries a lot of weight on her shoulders as she tries to keep the show’s emotions relatable and realistic, even when she’s turning directly to the camera and mocking her show’s structure or the latest plot development. The first season fizzles out a bit by the ending, leaving Jen in a weird state of “Is anything here real, and does any of it matter?”, but the journey to get there is light, airy, and often sharp as hell in its observations about the day-to-day flak professional women have to navigate over their gender. —TR

CHARLIE COX, SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW
...
Yes, Marvel TV vet Cox’s encore as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil got spoiled in one of the final, pre-season trailers, released at the San Diego Comic-Con. Yet knowing that the Man Without Fear would be putting in an appearance (and in new togs, no less!) did not make his eventual arrival in fellow legal eagle Jen Walter’s life any less thrilling. And having now seen the electric banter ‘tween Matt and Jen, his was one of the best cameos by a known character in any Disney+ Marvel series to date.

Madisynn, She-Hulk

There’s nothing we can say on behalf of the MCU’s mightiest party girl that hasn’t been said before. Winningly embodied by Patty Guggenheim, she had us at “but it’s not where you thiiiink,” but then cemented her place in this Marvel-ous world with her clear affection for her soon-to-be binge buddy “Wongers.”
