Disney and Lucasfilm screened an exclusive extended version of The Mandalorian Season 3 trailer that dropped during D23 Expo in September. Series creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni made virtual appearances during the panel to reveal a March 2023 release date, and a new image of the reunited Mandalorian and Grogu.

Pedro Pascal, who returns as the helmeted bounty hunter Din Djarin, appeared in person to tease what happens when Din and Grogu make their pilgrimage to Mandalore after the events of The Book of Boba Fett.

"There's so much that you're going to see. I think some of the best things about Season 1 and Season 2 of The Mandalorian were the surprises," Pascal said. "We were all able to keep baby Grogu a secret, we were all able to keep Luke Skywalker's return to the world a secret. So there are more secrets to keep."

Asked to describe the upcoming third season of the live-action Star Wars series in one word, Pascal answered: "Epic."

The Mandalorian: Will Moff Gideon 'Rise From the Ashes' in Season 3?
By Matt Webb Mitovich / January 1 2023
https://tvline.com/2023/01/01/the-mandalorian-season-3-preview-moff-gideon-return/

Quote

Not much is known about Season 3, which has a Wednesday, March 1 release date. The official synopsis vaguely promises that “the Mandalorian and Grogu … continue their journey through the lawless galaxy,” while the teaser trailer (below) suggests that Din will aim to restore his status as a Mandalorian — which was stripped of him by the Armorer in Boba Fett Episode 5 — by visiting the “living waters” in the mines under Mandalore. In addition to Pedro Pascal as Din, the returning cast includes Katee Sackhoff as Bo Katan, Carl Weathers as Greef Carga, Emily Swallow as the Armorer, Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto and Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon.

How much of the Moff should viewers expect? “You’re going to get some Moff Gideon,” Esposito shared with TVLine after our recent chat about his new Netflix heist drama, Kaleidoscope. “I mean, I always want more Moff Gideon — I’ve got to be honest with you! But, you know, you’re going to get a good amount of Moff Gideon.”

Does Gideon have any cards left to play after 1) having his skeleton crew of storm troopers so easily bested, 2) seeing many of his Dark Troopers sliced-n-diced by a robed Jedi, 3) ceding the Darksaber to Mando and 4) losing his cruiser to Bo Katan?

“You always want to see the phoenix rise from the ashes. Or, you want to see a nefarious villain rise from the ashes,” Esposito noted with a wink. “And believe me, he will.”

The Man Behind ‘Mandalorian’: Jon Favreau Talks Season 3, ‘Skeleton Crew’ and His Walk of Fame Honor
By Jordan Moreau    Feb 13, 2023
https://variety.com/2023/film/features/jon-favreau-mandalorian-season-3-skeleton-crew-iron-man-elf-1235521173/

When asked about bringing Mando and Grogu to the big screen, Favreau says the agenda was always to plot out “Star Wars” stories for streaming on TV.

“There’s always an opportunity when you have a set of characters and stories that people connect with that you could cross media into different areas. Marvel does it quite effectively,” he says. “It’s just a matter of where our time should be spent and what the appetite of the audience is. With all these stories we’re telling, it definitely is a full-time job just keeping this going with what we’re doing now. Television has a much different rhythm and schedule than film does.”

It’s a very Marvel-ous approach to building out the “Star Wars” universe, but Favreau says the two franchises rub off on each other.

“I speak to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige regularly, and we’re always watching each other’s stuff,” he says. “Clearly I’ve worked in the MCU and I’m dealing with people who worked in ‘Star Wars’ for a long time. There’s a lot of overlap, and certainly in the fan base. I think one informs the other, that’s just the nature of storytelling, on the technological side as well as stylistically.”

Jon Favreau Reveals Why The Mandalorian And Grogu Had To Reunite In The Book Of Boba Fett: ‘We Couldn’t Just Hit A Hard Reset’ – Exclusive
By Ben Travis    Feb 14, 2023
https://www.empireonline.com/tv/news/jon-favreau-why-mandalorian-grogu-reunited-in-book-of-boba-fett-exclusive/

Quote

In a major new interview alongside his Mandalorian co-creator Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau reflected on the choice to bring our hero and his young ward back together. “We couldn’t just hit a hard reset,” Favreau tells Empire in The Mandalorian Season 3 issue. “It’s going to be interesting to see how this unfolds for people who may not have seen The Book Of Boba Fett. But I think The Book Of Boba Fett offered time to pass. You saw what Mando was like without Baby Yoda and we saw what Grogu was like without the Mandalorian and neither of them was doing too good. So them coming back together was a really good plot point that allows us to jump back into Season 3 while maintaining the central relationship.”

While the upcoming season restores the show’s original dynamic, it was important that Grogu’s time with Luke wasn’t for nothing – it just ultimately wasn’t his path. “I think you had to service both things,” Favreau explains. “Just because this kid has the potential and had training, does he belong away from the Mandalorian? I saw it more like Paper Moon, where the whole thing is about delivering the kid to the blood relative, only to realise that, whether genetically through her father or just through bonding, Tatum O’Neal has to end up with Ryan O’Neal. That ending feels really good to me. And this little kid [Grogu] is given a decision to choose. And the kid chooses the emotional relationship and wants to be with the Mandalorian, and passing up Yoda’s lightsaber. Part of you wants to see him develop in that way, and part the other.”

From his travels with Din Djarin, to his time training with Luke, and into the future adventures of Season 3 and beyond, it’s all a case of building up a character in Grogu unlike any other in the Star Wars galaxy. “You have this interesting character who has Jedi training to some extent, Force abilities, but also is joining the Mandalorian culture, which we’ve established is something that you can opt into. It demands a lot, it offers a lot,” says Favreau. “Historically, Mandalorians developed all of those tools and armour and weapons to be able to counteract the Force abilities of Jedi. So as a storyteller this offers tremendous opportunity.” Now, can we see Grogu in his tiny Beskar chainmail please?

The Mandalorian Creator Shuts Down Popular Grogu Theory
By Russ Milheim    March 4, 2023
https://thedirect.com/article/the-mandalorian-grogu-clone-theory

Quote

Despite a popular theory posing the idea that Grogu is a clone of Yoda, creator and executive producer Jon Favreau confirmed that the fan-favorite character is “his own person, with his own history:”

“We knew it wasn’t Yoda — anybody who knows the timeframe [five years after ‘Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi’] knows that it can’t be him. Is it a clone? There’s a lot of cloning going on. But he’s his own person, with his own history.”
*  *  *
Director Rick Famuyiwa shared how Grogu “brings out the best in the people around him:”

“The purity of the character brings out the best in the people around him. This next season continues to attach to that idea. Din Djarin is having to face the decision to take off his helmet because of this child. How he can put himself right with his own beliefs — and how to then look forward — is a lot of what this season is about.”

We know that first season of The Mandalorian was set in 9 ABY (five years after Return of the Jedi). Is it the same with other seasons, and shows set in same period, or have we moved to another year? –Michal
I ran your question by EPs Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni on Monday, Michal, and the latter said that while he didn’t have his “specific notes” in front of him, “I don’t think we’re quite to 10 ABY.” But then… but then there were reports out of some other junket where Favreau said that Seasons 1 and 2 of Mando spanned “many years,” and that Grogu studied under Luke for “two years.” (I promptly pulled a Charlie Cale in this Twitter thread.) It looks like Favreau walked back those quotes a bit the other night (saying Grogu was with Luke for “zero to two years”). If it sheds any extra light, Favreau told me on Monday, “We talk about this so much,” especially since “we also have Ahsoka and The Skeleton Crew [coming up], which are taking place in the same time period…. But yes, we’re still in ‘the first third of the second gap'” in the nine-movie Skywalker Saga.

‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3: Katee Sackhoff On Bo-Katan & Whether She Wants The Darksaber
By Anthony D'Alessandro      March 8 2023
https://deadline.com/2023/03/the-mandalorian-katee-sackhoff-interview-bo-katan-darksaber-1235283183/

Quote

DEADLINE: Going back to the first episode of this season — why isn’t she fighting for the darksaber? When we first saw her introduced in Season 2, she wants that sword, and she begins this season in this cynicism.
KATEE SACKHOFF: We have to go back to see why she’s doing what she’s doing. This is a person who has fought, fought against her own people. She’s fought forever and she realizes that doesn’t work. You can’t continue to fight amongst yourselves. I think with Din — I don’t know if I’ll go as far as to say that she respects and trusts him — but she doesn’t not. He’s done nothing. If didn’t have the darksaber, he’s done nothing that would make him her enemy. I think that is her problem is that she realizes that she’s not going to fight her people anymore. She’s not going to fight someone who she doesn’t have a reason to fight. Every single possibility, every place that she’s at right now, every direction she’s done before didn’t work before. That’s what she’s trying to figure out.

DEADLINE: Between the second season and where we see her in episode 1 of Season 3 on the throne, when did her shift in attitude occur? Off screen?
SACKHOFF:
If you go by the timeline that Jon [Favreau] and Dave [Filoni] are acting on, in that it’s been a few years. She has had time to lose all her people. They’re not following her anymore, which means she’s not a leader without the darksaber, but she doesn’t know how to go about getting the darksaber in such a way that’s going to result in her not losing her people. That means she’s not going to — we have six episodes left. It’s just that at this impasse right here that we’re at in this first episode. She cannot see a path that she hasn’t taken already that hasn’t failed her.
*  *  *
DEADLINE: She has a profound amount of respect for Din.
SACKHOFF:
She does and she also respects what the darksaber stands for. She doesn’t necessarily think he’s old school as much as she thinks he’s a religious fanatic.

DEADLINE: This is a guy who if he had a choice between taking care of Grogu for the rest of his life or having the darksaber, he’d choose Grogu in a second.
SACKHOFF:
He’s trying to get rid of it at the beginning of the season; he’s trying to give it away for sure.

‘The Mandalorian’ EP Teases How the ‘Star Wars’ Spinoffs Could All Come Together: ‘A Big Event in This Time Period Is Very Real’
Dave Filoni also shares some of what’s ahead for Season 3

Drew Taylor | March 15, 2023
https://www.thewrap.com/the-mandalorian-season-3-dave-floni-interview/

Quote

Going into “The Mandalorian” Season 3, what were the key objectives for you?
This story by definition is “The Mandalorian” and speaks to that part of the “Star Wars” saga that we’re now telling specifically about Din Djarin and Grogu. But they’ve pulled into their orbit many other Mandalorian characters, namely Katee Sackhoff’s Bo Katan. You have the armor. And I think that it starts to raise a lot of questions about The Way and what is The Way. And when they speak vaguely about their home planet of Mandalore, which was basically lost and really destroyed in the war with the Empire – is there any chance of rectifying that, reclaiming that? And what does that mean for our lead character Mando? What does that mean for Grogu now that Grogu’s chosen to be with Mando instead of following Luke in the path of the Jedi? What are all these little signs and tea leaves saying to us in our “Star Wars” galaxy?

Jon is the one that brought the idea to Lucasfilm. And I’ve been there shepherding it with him. He would disagree with this, but I always see it as his story and I’m helping to aid him through as George guided me in “The Clone Wars.” I think he’s just done an amazing job – he always does – with the writing and with his ideas.
*  *  *
Kathy Kennedy said in 2020 that the series would “culminate in a climactic story event.” But more recently, Jon has said “The Mandalorian” could go on forever. Are you building towards “a climactic story event,” or has that been put aside?
Well, from a certain point of view, it could. It could build to a climactic thing and “The Mandalorian” could still go on. It’s not necessarily an either/or, is it?

It’s an interesting way to think about it. I tend to think, as we’ve been working on the “The Mandalorian” and then writing “Ahsoka,” and then Jon Watts came in with “Skeleton Crew,” there is an entire time period that is post-“Return of the Jedi.” And I look at that time period, which before “The Force Awakens,” is around 30 years of time. When you look at the original trilogy, it’s a much less significant amount of time that those three movies take place in. And so, what I like is that we’re really building very slowly an ecosystem of characters and politics and events in the post-“Return of the Jedi” time period. And that may or may not expand in a bigger way as we add more shows to it and add more characters to it.

The good thing is that we’re all talking creatively together about where these stories are all going. And I love whiteboards, and I whiteboard everything and have timelines. They always start back with “The Phantom Menace” and they always go out to “The Rise of Skywalker.” I have all these slots in between and where everybody’s doing everything, so I can look at it all and commiserate with Kathy on what’s going on here, what’s going on there? It’s very fun.

I think that the reality of there being a big event in this time period is very real, is all I would say to that. But yes, if Jon wanted to keep making “Mandalorian” stories, as long as he does not get bumped off in said titanic event, then they, I suppose, could continue. There doesn’t seem to be any lack of interest in Grogu and Mando, that’s for sure.

Hmm, combine some of the speculation in that twitter thread with what just went down in the Ahsoka trailer and it's clear that The Mandalorian will not get free from the narrative shackles laid out by 'Clone Wars' and 'Rebels' in the near future - as if there ever was any doubt (and I'm not complaining).

Well that confirms that the New Republic series being canceled isn’t going to change the plans to interconnect the series leading to a combined finale. I know some fans wanted The Mandalorian to stay separate but I’m thrilled.

It’s not surprising but at Celebration Rick Famuyiwa confirmed they consider the show title to refer to more Mandalorians than just Din.
