All the Walker hate I've seen on social media has specifically been about the character, not the actor.

We all know Walker will lose the shield... maybe he can still be a Captain though...

Must have been a media day earlier this week...

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Interviews with Wyatt Russell, Erin Kellyman and Amy Aquino
CinemaBlend   Mar 31, 2021

Wyatt Russell Admits The Captain America Suit Was ‘Difficult To Wear’ And Hard To Figure Out
SEAN O'CONNELL     APR. 1. 2021
https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2565223/wyatt-russell-captain-america-suit-difficult-to-wear-falcon-winter-soldier

Quote

Not Wyatt Russell, who looks incredibly cool in the revamped Captain America costume for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but laid out the process and makes it sound like legit work. Russell told CinemaBlend:

"It’s very specific. All the people who work on the costumes do such tedious work with moving this seam here and that, measuring from here to your belly button and ‘How long is this?’ and ‘How much bigger do you think you’re going to get? Because we have to adjust the suit!’ It’s so much stuff that it doesn’t always fit right. So there’s lots of fittings. You know, they want it to look like they want it to look. It’s a process. Like, I didn’t get the suit really right, in terms of how it was fitting on my shoulders, until like a month or two into shooting because it would pull down, or it would hurt, and there’s a suit underneath, and there are three pieces to the suit, and they lock different ways… I was like, ‘Holy God, this thing is difficult to wear.’"

Why Life During The Blip Was Better For Marvel Characters Left Behind, According To Falcon And The Winter Soldier's Erin Kellyman
SEAN O'CONNELL    APR. 1. 2021
https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2565247/the-blip-marvel-characters-falcon-and-the-winter-soldiers-erin-kellyman

Quote

When I asked Erin Kellyman what she knew about that time span, since we haven’t yet seen it on screen, she elaborated:

"What I got from it was that people had come together out of the trauma of other people leaving, and there was more of a unity and people worked together more. Because they needed to. Because nobody knew what was going on, and this was just some thing that people had to accept and work through, and everybody was helping each other. I think that’s what made people unite a little bit more, and that’s what Karli wants to get back to."

Wyatt Russell Reacts to Being ‘the Marvel Punching Bag’ in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’
By Adam B. Vary    March 31, 2021

Quote

Did you study Chris Evans at all in preparing for the role, his mannerisms or movements as Cap?
Yeah, I think in some ways, for sure. In John’s world, he looks up to Steve Rogers, and wants to embody that. When you’re seeing him do his version of it, is it really who John actually is? Or is John trying to be someone that he’s not?
*  *  *
The first impression that I had of John is that he’s a slicker and maybe more corporate version of Captain America than Steve Rogers. How should we expect him to evolve this season?
I think there is a corporate aspect to the inception of his character as Captain America. I think that what you’re seeing now is him battling with, “How do I be me and deal with this corporation that is the U.S. government?” It’s the only corporation he’s ever worked for and it’s worked very well for him in his life. Now he’s in this different world where there’s a PR aspect to it. He’s just been working in the clandestine world, most likely, where nobody really knows what he’s doing but he’s getting the job done. And now it’s like, Okay, go do that as Captain America — and sometimes his version of getting the job done is a little bit not the same.
*  *  *
Finally, there were a lot of memes of your face after the first episode. How did you feel about that?
I don’t have social media, but I’ve gotten some of the stuff sent to me from friends that were just too good not to see. The best one is the “Up” guy with with the helmet on. It’s fucking unbelievable. I mean, whoever did that deserves an award of some kind. It’s flattering. They just hate the guy. They just hate him! It was fun to be the Marvel punching bag for a little while.

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER: Episode 4 Runtime Revealed Alongside Possible Story Details

Reddit user Plenty_Echidna_545 is back with details on next Friday's instalment, and after correctly revealing the runtimes for the previous three episodes (and the entirety of WandaVision), he's now confirmed that episode four will be 54 minutes long. That's the same as "Power Broker," so Marvel Studios is likely looking to pack a lot of story into this effort after that big cliffhanger.

Spoiler

The leaker also mentions that John Walker/Captain America and Lemar Hoskins/Battlestar will have "prominent" roles in episode four, which is good news after they were both sidelined in yesterday's third chapter.

This is actually kind of interesting because Cap's uniforms are part of the story arc. Maybe as much as Stark's. Starting with the USO red white and blue to the more combat appropriate WWII versions, his switch to darker tactical gear after his return, back to red white and blue in the final scenes of Winter Soldier. Back to black, back to red, white, blue etc.

For Walker, the DOD clearly made a uniform that says this is not you grandfather's Captain America. New logo, "A" on the shoulder. But the red white and blue tells everyone that it is Captain America.

‘Haz un currywurst, por favor’ oh, man. Forget Spanglish. That’s so cute.

Total respect to Daniel for taking Robert to a Spanish-German restaurant. Patatas bravas con currywurst, with a bit of a Ferran Adriá knock-off thrown in. Really, what more could anyone want. I mean, you might explode, but it would be so worth it.

Zemo was actually really likeable in Thunderbolts, in a strange way.

He set up a fake team of superheroes, who were actually all supervillains, to take advantage of a time when the Avengers and Fantastic Four were missing, so they could gain access to secrets and technology that the likes of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four had. But some of his team ended up liking being heroes more than being villains - Songbird, in particular, is a really cool character with a great story - so they kicked him out.

He later returned to lead the team, pledging to save the world from some threat that only he was aware of.  Of course, to save the world he had to find this incredible source of power and take control of it, and Songbird ended up betraying him and sending him into a time portal (or something), believing he was going to use said power to take over the world.

The thing is, I don't think Marvel ever made it clear whether he was sincere or not, and I like to think he was. He was pompous and grandiose and probably completely mentally unstable, but the idea of him actually having noble goals was really cool.

So I'd love it if the MCU gave us anything similar with Bruhl's Zemo, and particularly if we got Songbird, who is a favourite minor superhero of mine.

I had never read any comics with Songbird and don't know anything about her, but I always play as her character in Lego Marvel Super Heroes lol. I'm all for a Thunderbolts show/movie. It sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

It seems like the final two episodes have a lot of ground to cover, given how this week’s episode ended, knowing that this sequence from the trailers is still ahead, and assuming the penultimate episode will probably spend time flashing back to John Walker’s past in Afghanistan.

Exclusive: The Falcon And The Winter Soldier's Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan On The Significance Of Steve Rogers's Exit
BY PRAMIT CHATTERJEE     APRIL 14, 2021
https://in.mashable.com/entertainment/21586/exclusive-the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldiers-anthony-mackie-sebastian-stan-on-the-significance-of-st

Quote

On his view of Captain America giving up his shield after the events of Avengers: Endgame, actor Anthony Mackie said,

"Well, it's hard. I think 2020 and COVID, if nothing else, have proven how difficult it is to be a Black man in America. It's not a new understanding, but I think we, as a culture, have become less shy about talking about it. When you think of Captain America, you think of a very specific brand of person. And there are so many different lines, so many different avenues, so many realities that we have to live in every day to be a successful Black man in our society. Sometimes it’s just too hard to deal with all of those courtships of success. You can't be the same person in every room you walk in because every person you meet expects a different person. For somebody like Sam, he has to ask himself the question if that's something he’s willing to deal with. Sam considers the shield a representation of the country that we live in. There's a lot of trepidation as far as how does a Black man represent a country that does not represent him?"

Explaining how as a character, Bucky felt at the loss of his best friend, Steve Rogers aka Captain America, actor Sebastian Stan said,

"He's actually happy about that in a way because he saw his friend finally chooses his own path and do something for himself. The most unselfish guy finally decided to follow what he wanted to do with his life. I think the issue for Bucky now is about who will fill the shoes that Cap left behind and the legacy that he left behind. I think Sam definitely grapples with that as well. They're both kind of, whether they want to or not, in the shadow of what Captain America means. And I think in Bucky’s mind, Sam is the next guy—that's who was chosen, that was Steve’s wish. Bucky wants to see that through—and if there's any doubt in Sam’s mind about it then that's immediately a conflict for Bucky. He still feels very protective of Steve and his legacy."

Daniel Brühl and Anthony Mackie ‘acted like teenagers’ on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier set over Zemo’s coat
Mike Rampton  April 14, 2021
https://metro.co.uk/2021/04/14/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-bruhl-on-zemos-enviable-coat-14400048/

Quote

You play Zemo. When you played him in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, did you have any indication that you would be coming back?
[Daniel Brühl:]
It’s always a good sign if they don’t kill you. I was very happy when I read the end of the Civil War script and was put in a miserable German prison cell because I thought, well, there’ll be a way of him getting out of there.

But there was no indication of any plan. I was in Budapest working on the series The Alienist and a call came out of the blue and I said yes immediately.

It’s nice to revisit a character but do something different rather than repeat yourself and become redundant.
*  *  *
Zemo is one of the more complex villains. Is he even a villain in your eyes?
It always depends on your perspective. He’s certainly not a hero. To me he’s an antagonist but he’s not really a villain.

His methods are extreme and I don’t agree with them but I had an instant empathy for the character.

Everything he does is born out of terrible trauma and loss. His whole family died. He sees these beings who have the ability to play God and he knows exactly what danger that can cause, so his motives to eliminate them are completely comprehensible to me.

Marvel is smart enough to not have one-dimensional evil characters who just do what they do for no reason. Their characters are multi-layered, soI didn’t fear getting bored.
*  *  *
It’s a hell of a coat.
I loved that coat. Anthony Mackie [his co-star] wanted it. As childish as it sounds, that’s when we actors become teenagers again.

Give actors something cool to wear and they will really enjoy it. Putting the coat on with its big fur collar made me understand that this guy is royalty.

He comes from an aristocratic background and made me think maybe I should give him some very suave, posh notions, a certain attitude.
*  *  *
How was it acting in Baron Zemo’s trademark purple full-face balaclava?
I remember when I was in my hotel in Budapest when director Kari Skogland came for the first time with the mask.

She had it in a special suitcase that she had to bring through security. She had to open it up and show people this purple mask she was travelling with.

But it was a wonderful, thrilling moment putting it on and becoming a different character.

It’s an iconic look that the fans know from the comic books, so it was great to be given the opportunity to show it for once.

A great profile of Danny Ramirez:

Danny Ramirez Lifts Off with 'Falcon and the Winter Soldier'

As soon as the episode hit, Ramirez was flooded with social media messages of gratitude from Latinx audiences. Messages in Spanish, messages from Honduras, from Mexico — even one from a second cousin in Colombia whose young son couldn't believe there was a Marvel character who looked like him, much less one he was related to.

"It's so much more resounding and impactful than I could have possibly imagined," says the Chicago-born Ramirez, whose mother is Mexican and whose father is Colombian.

And some ratings news:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/falcon-winter-soldier-solid-debut-nielsen-streaming-rankings

Quote

The Disney+ series starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan racked up 495 million minutes of viewing time for the week of March 15-21. That ranks second among original series (behind Netflix's Ginny & Georgia at 540 million minutes) for the week, and seventh among all programming on Disney+, Amazon's Prime Video, Hulu and Netflix.

The series also drew a bit more viewing time than Disney+'s previous Marvel show, WandaVision, whose January debut drew 434 million minutes of watch time. The 495 million minutes for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier equates to an audience of about 9.9 million accounts, based on the 50-minute running time of the premiere episode.

After AMC cancels Lodge 49, Russell's in a spot. Things like Lodge 49 and Everybody Wants Some!!, where he's playing these lovable-broken weirdos with names like Dud and Willoughby? Russell loves it. Good at it, too. But as someone of the tall and talented variety, the superhero magnet comes for you eventually. He's getting offers to audition for a few roles. Stories weren't right. "Maybe I was a little insecure about being able to pull it off convincingly. And I just hadn't seen the right superhero yet," he says. Marvel comes calling, asking him to audition for a mystery role. Russell's agent pushes him to read some lines and he does. Whoever this superhero guy is, there's actually complexity there. Russell gets the part. Time to break out the champagne and—Marvel shows him a picture of Captain America. Oof.

"My first reaction was like a kid who opened up a present on Christmas that's amazing, but maybe it's not what you want," Russell says. It was like, 'Yeah!' But in my head, I'm going, What? I can't be Captain America. It's impossible. I can't do it."
*  *  *
Now's as good of a time as any to address a few FAQs. Russell never had a heart-to-heart, big bro/little bro passing of the torch phone call with Chris Evans. He didn't hit up his dad, who played Ego The Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, for advice on how to stick a toe into Marvel's multibillion-dollar multiverse. Oh! A big one. Russell doesn't know John Walker's future past The Falcon and the Winter Solider. Or can't say. Probably both.

So Russell's trying to figure out how to play Not Chris Evans. First of all, John Walker really does look like the Up grandpa all jacked up on supersoldier serum. Not a great start. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, his greatest strengths are impatience and not playing well with friends. The Dora Milaje hand him the ass-kicking of a lifetime, which, if anything, prompts him to cheat genetics and take the serum. Which he uses to bludgeon a man's face so hard that he gets blood all over the shield. But Walker's a war hero. That's how he got the gig. Medal of Honor recipient. That means something. Right?
*  *  *
On set, Russell would pick the brain of a guy named Brendan. He's a trainer for Marvel and a former Marine. Brendan told him to listen to an interview with Dakota Meyer, who won the Medal of Honor for saving 36 lives in Afghanistan during a single battle. But he also had to extract the bodies of four dead Americans. During the interview, Meyer describes a day that he has to live with for the rest of his life. His friends died. And he got a medal for it. Russell imagines what it must feel like for Walker to look at his medal. What he thinks of when he sees it. What it's like for Walker to become Captain America and have millions of people to go, Yeah man, go for it! when you're suffering from PTSD. Russell asks: "We look at people who are in the service, like, Yeah, way to go. But we don't ever actually look into their heart and go, What's going on, really?"

"Really, at the end of the day, that Medal of Honor represents failure," Russell adds of Walker's highest award. "It represents failure. And he's trying desperately, desperately to right his wrong. By going down that rabbit hole, he's making things worse, you know?"
*  *  *
"Not everybody agrees with [this], but if you're going to go fight a war, you kind of need that guy," Russell says. "Because I guarantee you from the stories that you hear when you hear war stories, if you don't have that guy, it's very difficult. Sometimes, they go overboard and do things that are wrong. That's what makes him an interesting character. It's in the gray area. He kills Nico with a shield. Well, Nico's that guy, but he didn't deserve to be killed by a shield. But he's a bad guy. [Walker] is what we look at now where he's basically just an overzealous cop. He's an ex-cop. He uses excessive force to get what he wants done and that's not OK today."

... Julia Louis-Dreyfus. JLD! In the MCU. Just when you thought they ran out of actors to put in these things. She shows up as the mysterious Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, telling Walker what he wants to hear and teasing a partnership with him down the line. As far as Marvel Cameos go, Louis-Dreyfus even beats David Hasselhoff in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. And Matt Damon showing up in Thor: Ragnarok. Definitely beats Thanos. Russell didn't even know Louis-Dreyfus was coming when he signed on. Says there were rumblings on set. Someone’s coming. Louis-Dreyfus shows up for a couple days, a walking code-red-level Marvel secret, Russell describing working alongside the TV legend almost as if he’s back on the Linklater set. He could say anything—she’d roll with it, give it back to him, try her own things—spontaneity, vibes, all that. “It'll be endlessly interesting because she's endlessly interesting,” he says of JLD x MCU.
*  *  *
Considering that Louis-Dreyfus's character could be playing a dark-sided Nick Fury—an all-knowing, wink-wink assembler of a potential team—it looks like Marvel has big plans for Walker. In Episode Five's post-credits tease, he forges his own bootleg Captain America shield, fusing his Medal of Honor right in the middle of it. Before then, Russell acts his way through a hell of a villain origin story. The government strips Walker of each and every decoration, makes him ineligible for veteran's benefits, and sends the would-be hero packing. Walker's response? I only did what you asked me to do. You made me this.

"He only ever knew one family—and that was the United States Military," Russell says. "He cared and he fought for them and he loved it, but now they've taken it. They've used him, and he feels used, and doesn't feel understood. Everybody has now turned their back on him, which is very dangerous to do to a person like that who now has super soldier serum in his veins."

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Finally Hits No. 1 on Parrot’s Digital Originals Demand Chart

The Disney+ original Marvel Cinematic Universe series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” finally reached No. 1 on Parrot Analytics’ digital originals U.S. chart the week ended April 17. The week of the release of its fifth episode, the show had a modest 0.6% gain in demand expressions, the proprietary metric Parrot uses to gauge a show’s popularity, giving it 43.3 times the demand of an average series. It was No. 7 on Parrot’s list of all TV shows. The fifth episode had a noteworthy cameo, and the show should maintain some buzz heading into its sixth and final episode.

Netflix’s perennially popular “Stranger Things” dropped a spot to No. 2, reaching 40.3 times average demand after a 1.9% drop in demand expressions. It was No. 8 on Parrot’s list of all TV shows.

“WandaVision,” the first Disney+ series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, slipped to No. 3 after another 2.5% drop in demand expressions, giving it 39.3 times average demand. It was No. 9 on the list of overall TV shows.

Disney+ had a third show in the top five digital originals with the live-action “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” which held steady at No. 4, garnering 36.5 times the demand of the average show after a 1.4% dip in demand expressions.

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Will Run as a Drama Series at 2021 Emmys — Exclusive
Ben Travers   April 19, 2021
https://www.indiewire.com/2021/04/falcon-and-winter-soldier-emmys-drama-series-season-2-plans-interview-1234631267/

Quote

“The Falcon and the Winter Solider” will be submitted as a Drama Series at this year’s Emmy Awards, marking a shift from its expected placement in the Limited Series categories.

In an exclusive interview with IndieWire, Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development and “Falcon and Winter Soldier” executive producer Nate Moore said they started planning to run the series as a Drama fairly early on.

“[The decision] came about sort of as the series was launching, but it was something we were thinking about even as we were making it — not because we think, ‘Oh my God, it’s so great,’ but because it does feel a bit more dramatic than some of our typical stuff,” Moore said. “As this is sort of our first foray into television, even if it’s Disney+, we thought [the category placement] was appropriate for what the show is trying to tackle.”

While Moore said Marvel “always wants the possibility” for more seasons, he did not confirm “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” Season 2 was moving forward just yet. “We’ve definitely kicked around ideas because we always like to keep thinking about where things can go, but we also, frankly, in the crush of the pandemic, we’re just trying to finish the show and make sure it got out in a timely matter,” he said. “Hopefully at the end of this season, you will see the potential for what we could tell in a subsequent season.”

Meanwhile, Marvel’s other eligible TV series on Disney+ — the nine-episode “WandaVision” — will run in the Limited or Anthology Series categories, as expected.

“I think ‘WandaVision’ is a show you can only do once. She can’t go back into that reality,” Moore said, speaking to what separates the two Marvel series. “That is such a complete arc of what that character can do and what that story wanted to do, whereas ‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ is really about dealing with, to me, the legacy of what a superhero is, through the lens of Captain America and his shield, but ultimately through the lens of all these different characters. And that’s a story I think you can revisit in subsequent seasons because it’s an evergreen story. It’s a conversation.”
*  *  *
Moore said they had not decided on specific category placements for actors and other talent, such as whether Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan would both run as Lead Actors or be split into Lead and Supporting races.

“We haven’t had those deep discussions just yet,” he said. “I know Marvel has been around for a minute, but we’re always still learning because we’re always trying new things. So yeah, we don’t really have a strategy so far.”

‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’: Julia Louis-Dreyfus Joins as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine

Marvel.com got to chat with executive producer Nate Moore and co-executive producer Zoie Nagelhout about bringing Julia Louis-Dreyfus into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“What a gift for us to have her,” revealed Nagelhout. “She is just incredible. In the initial conversations between her and Kevin [Feige], she was just excited by the idea of joining this world and what it could mean to play a new quirky, weird, mysterious character. And she loved that there was this comedy to it as well because that's, of course, one of her great strengths. She was the perfect character to bring into John Walker's world to complicate what he’s going through and give him a weird almost ominous light at the end of the tunnel.”

“Julia has such range,” praised Moore. “She's only ever been great. There's something so likable about her that when she does show those darker tendencies to her character, it's a little bit more surprising and entertaining because you don't expect it to come from her.”
*  *  *
In addition to Moore and Nagelhout, Marvel.com also chatted with Wyatt Russell, who plays John Walker, about Walker's brief yet memorable scene with her in “Truth.”
*  *  *
“People like her make everybody better around them,” noted Russell before discussing their scene together. “What was great was in that moment, I didn't do any talking. I was just watching Julia Louis-Dreyfus act and got to be a sort of passenger. Because you're just letting Julia Louis-Dreyfus just be her. I was like an audience member. [She’s] hitting all the beats that she needed to hit and making it totally different than it was on the page, she was great in every possible way.”
*  *  *
“It's the beginning of something,” stated Nagelhout. “John is really excited because he is someone who needs to have a purpose. He needs to feel like he has a place in the world. He needs to feel like he has direction and ambition. There's a catharsis to that [meeting] for him.”

"Whenever we talked about Valentina, even in the writer's room, she was sort of a more acerbic, funnier, but darker Nick Fury,” explained Moore. “Someone who knows her secrets, who's not afraid to operate in the moral gray area, but maybe who isn't as inherently altruistic.”

“Having a character like Valentina in the show, and actually in the MCU, is really interesting because I think she'll be making more waves sooner rather than later,” teased Moore.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier's Most Challenging Scenes To Film, According To The Cinematographer
ERIK SWANN     APR. 21. 2021
https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2566227/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldiers-most-challenging-scenes-according-to-cinematographer-marvel

Quote

From the freeway fight in episode two to the fight between John Walker, Lemar Hoskins and the Dora Milaje in episode four, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has certainly been filled with great moments. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with the show’s cinematographer, P.J. Dillon, during which we discussed the show’s cinematic scope among other things. When asked about the sequences that were the most challenging to execute, he first cited the aerial sequence that kicked off the show:

"Different sequences have different challenges, like the aerial sequence in episode one had its challenges, because it was a mix of real people jumping out of planes and shooting that stuff, and then mixing that with stuff shot against green screen. So that was challenging."
*  *  *
The fifth episode (“Truth”), however, provided P.J. Dillon and the crew with even more challenges. The cinematographer went on to discuss the episode’s opening fight, which pitted Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes against new Captain America John Waker. While the scene was difficult enough to shoot as is, there were some external challenges in the mix by that point:

"The big fight sequence at the start episode five is probably my favorite sequence that I shot. And the challenge with that was that due to scheduling and production difficulties, we didn't have as much prep, as we would have had on some of the other action sequences. So to a certain extent, we had to sort of invent that as we went along. And I'm really pleased with how it turned out. So that was challenging, but I think something that came off really well."

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier almost featured an actor from The Punisher
By Molly Edwards   April 22, 2021

Ben Barnes, who played Jigsaw in the Marvel/Netflix series The Punisher, has revealed that he was almost in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

"Kari Skogland, who's directing every episode of Falcon and Winter Soldier, directed every episode of a miniseries I did called Sons of Liberty where I played Sam Adams," Barnes explained in an Instagram Live session with Rotten Tomatoes. "And she actually messaged me saying she was doing Winter Soldier and that there might be a character for me in it. And I was just about to do Shadow and Bone so I didn't even know what it might be, and I still don't know really."

While it sounds unlikely that the plan was for Barnes to reprise his Punisher role, it's still an interesting coincidence. WandaVision recently saw Evan Peters kind of return as Peter/Pietro Maximoff, a part he played in the Fox X-Men franchise – though it was eventually revealed that he wasn't actually Quicksilver.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Needed to Stop Deifying Steve Rogers
By Bec Heim / Apr 22nd, 2021
https://www.themarysue.com/falcon-winter-soldier-stop-deifying-steve-rogers/

Quote

Steve Rogers’ presence looms over The Falcon and the Winter Soldier like a ghost, a different form of grief shown than what we saw in WandaVision. Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are the two people that, arguably, knew Steve Rogers best. They are the ones who are struggling with his legacy while also, simultaneously, deifying him. Bucky, in part, wraps his identity within Steve’s judgement because Steve believed in him as a person. So, what does that mean now that Steve is gone?

‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ Finale Is MCU’s First “Rotten” Episode
Posted on April 24, 2021 by Rebekah Barton
https://insidethemagic.net/2021/04/falcon-and-winter-soldier-finale-rotten-rwb1/

Quote

Although fans on social media had a positive reaction to the season finale overall — especially the ending title card, which saw The Falcon and the Winter Soldier fade to Captain America and the Winter Soldier — critical reception has been less-than-stellar, particularly when compared to Marvel’s first streaming series, WandaVision.

Whereas the WandaVision finale, starring Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision, has an 88% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s Season 1 finale is now the first episode in either series to receive a Rotten rating on the popular movie and TV review website.

Critics Aren’t Too Thrilled With ‘The Falcon and Winter Soldier’ Finale, The Season’s Lowest-Rated Episode
BY ERIC ITAL    APRIL 24, 2021
https://brobible.com/culture/article/falcon-and-winter-soldier-finale-rating/

Quote

In the grand scheme of things, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier — which was *originally* supposed to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s grand debut series on Disney+ — was an absolutely massive success. Not only were fans and critics alike both satisfied with the series, praising its movie-quality set pieces and exploration of racial themes, but it also broke all sorts of records for Disney+, which, at the end of the day, is exactly what they’re looking for.
*  *  *
But while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier may have been a booming hit in the macro, the same cannot be said about the micro, as the season one finale as the episode, “One World, One People”, is the worst-reviewed episode on Rotten Tomatoes and by quite some distance.
*  *  *
Ultimately, this merely proves that Marvel is a victim of its own success. On the scale of Marvel content, sure, perhaps it’s not necessarily earth-shattering, but when compared to regular television standards, it’s an absolute triumph. Rarely has an action sequence on television looked as spectacular as Sam Wilson’s first flight as Captain America. This episode needs to be judged as if it were the third act of a Marvel Studios film, not the final chapter of a prestige drama.

Regardless of the finale’s sub-standard Rotten Tomatoes score, the reaction to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been sweepingly positive: episode one was Disney+’s most-watched series premiere (topping the likes of The Mandalorian, which is wild considering how massive of a show that is), and reports broke yesterday that series showrunner Malcolm Spellman is developing a fourth Captain America film for Marvel Studios.

Did The Falcon And The Winter Soldier reach new highs—or new lows?

Sam Barsanti
I believe that the Marvel movies—at their best—are more than just cheap excuses to move some pieces on the board in service of The Next Big Thing, but two shows deep into the MCU’s Disney+ venture, I can see more than ever why some people have that take. The MCU stories work because of the strength of these characters and how (just like in the Marvel comics of old) they feel more like people than impossibly huge and powerful gods. But they do not work when they depend on the twisty plots and mysteries that the TV format lends itself to so well. Both WandaVision and TFTWS have relied to some degree on trying to hook the audience with questions about what’s going on, and in both cases I couldn’t give less of a shit about the way they were eventually resolved. The ticking time bomb of John Walker was a dud, the Flag-Smashers’ scheme never made any sense, and both Zemo and Sharon Carter became completely different people for the sake of plot and an obvious twist.
...
That all being said, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan rule, and the only reason any of this show worked at all is because of how good they are. Hell, I really liked the escalating cheers from New Yorkers as Bucky and Sam started saving people, and even though Mackie’s big speech was so heavy-handed that I thought for a second that he did have the Super Soldier Serum, I loved that it gave him a chance to just lay out everything the show should’ve been about from the beginning—and it doesn’t hurt that the scene seemed like an obvious nod to my all-time favorite Captain America moment in the comics.

Falcon and Winter Soldier: Bucky's New Beginning Is Heartbreaking
BY RENALDO MATADEEN  APRIL 26, 2021
https://www.cbr.com/falcon-winter-soldier-bucky-new-beginning-heartbreaking/

Quote

It shows that even though the government has given him a second chance, society may not be so quick to forgive. Proper closure, and a clichéd happy ending, could have entailed him and Yori reconciling, since he was mind-controlled, and Leah helping him live a life of normalcy as they continued to bond. Sadly, Bucky knows that because of the killer he was, part of him might not be able to connect to others the way he used to. While Sam's community loves him, this is because Bucky's now part of that extended family. On the other hand, when it comes to strangers and those he took loved ones from, Bucky won't be able to wipe the slate clean and remove the red from his ledger.
*  *  *
Bucky's situation is tragic yet again, because these are demons he just can't escape in the real world. It's proof that even as he defragments his mind, these tangible elements will still exist to trigger his dark past and as a result, he cannot interact with society the way he wants to. People just can't erase what he did, so Bucky will be forced to live with these ghosts forever.

In terms of catharsis, it's non-triumphant compared to the glorious moments the other heroes get, such as Sam taking on Steve Rogers' mantle and Isaiah getting his own display at the Smithsonian. But ultimately, with such a checkered history, it makes sense for there to be a sacrifice for coming back into the fold. Maybe someday Bucky will find a tribe of his own but for now, it seems he's just content with not being activated by codewords.

The Falcon & Winter Soldier Finale Failed Bucky Barnes
BY JOHN ATKINSON   APRIL 26, 2021
https://screenrant.com/falcon-winter-soldier-bucky-story-redemption-fail-letdown/

Quote

The moment ultimately came in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier finale. Unfortunately, no sooner had Bucky sat down to unfurl his painful confession than he was walking back out of the apartment door. After nearly six whole episodes of anticipation, the moment simply collapsed under the weight and felt little more than a footnote compared to the other storylines. The end failed to live up to the beginning, delivering none of the catharsis nor sense of closure that had been so fervently anticipated. It simply looked like Bucky imparted the words and then left — with only a momentary glance back en route to the overtly happy ending that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier finale wanted to leapfrog straight over to.
*  *  *
Falcon and The Winter Soldier's credits served up a surprise that was equal parts crowd-pleasing and a stark disappointment. On one hand, the traditional title card had switched out The Falcon for Captain America. The move officially served as a tribute to Sam Wilson's new Captain America. On the other, Bucky still being designated as The Winter Soldier felt like a misstep. Portions of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier were about Bucky finally climbing out from under the shadow of The Winter Soldier. Throughout the show, the alias was described as almost an entirely separate entity altogether. Being The Winter Soldier consumed his dreams, shaped how people viewed him, and dictated how he viewed himself. Everything he did was about amending that view.
*  *  *
All in all, the failure with Bucky's arc could be tied to the wider issues of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier's pacing and balance. Episodes often felt more catered to one character over the other. In terms of the finale, it seemed much more skewed towards Sam- but, given Sam's decision to become Captain America, this is somewhat understandable. In service of that, it equally made sense for some characters to be given less focus. With Bucky being equally popular and a titular character, however, the show would've benefitted from another episode — or, at least, some extra time dedicated to him. In a finale episode, time really should've been carved out equally for both arcs to share the spotlight.

With just a little extra time, the Bucky and Yori scene could have had more room to breathe. Equally, instead of the conversation with Yori being part of a larger breakthrough, the show could've contented itself with just that. Rather than rushing straight to Bucky being cured now, his confession could've conveyed a single new step forward and away from his life as the Winter Soldier. Instead of simply being an unearned end, it could've been a moment that was, even more, a new beginning — in addition to him finding a surrogate family in the Wilsons. To that end, rather than bidding Dr. Raynor (Amy Aquino) an unceremonious farewell, Bucky could've arrived finally ready to engage in therapy fully and with honesty, demonstrating that he was healed enough to finally start "doing the work" and foreshadowing an even more together Bucky later in Phase 4.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: Emily VanCamp and Erin Kellyman on Sharon Carter’s Role as the Power Broker
BY CHRISTINE DINH   April 26, 2021
https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/falcon-winter-soldier-emily-vancamp-erin-kellyman-sharon-carter-power-broker?linkId=117201490

Quote

Emily VanCamp, who plays Sharon Carter, shared what her initial talks with the creative team was like, “I remember Malcolm [Spellman] saying, ‘Oh, wait until you see what’s happening!’ I was so confused; I didn’t really know what they were talking about in the very beginning. I had only read maybe one script and was wondering if they were talking about these fight sequences.”

However, it quickly clicked into place for VanCamp. “When I found out that Sharon is in fact the Power Broker, it made perfect sense,” explained the star. “It really solidifies what all of this means for Sharon. We’re meeting this whole new version of her, and this kind of character, unfortunately, is the sad product of the series of events where she was abandoned and left to her own devices. It is very fitting that she was hurt and scorned and went rogue.”
*  *  *
Head series writer and executive producer Malcolm Spellman revealed Sharon’s whereabouts was crucial to her evolution, “Having Sharon be anchored in Madripoor meant this inherent intersection between who she was and who she’s going to become.”

Co-executive producer Zoie Nagelhout added, “We knew if we were going to bring Sharon Carter back, we had to redefine her. She put her neck out to help our guys and she was literally just left in the darkness of the aftermath of Civil War. She essentially had her arc offscreen, and we’re now catching up on what she experienced [during that time]. You uncover the mystery of why she has changed and who she has become.”

Nagelhout further elaborated, “There’s always that question of not losing the remnants of the character and keeping elements of her, but still fully exploring what happens to you when you’re forced to survive for years. Your key mode is survival; it does something to a person.”

For the audience, Power Broker’s presence loomed from the beginning as mysterious and omnipresent force who would text direct threats to Karli Morgenthau. Erin Kellyman, who plays Karli Morgenthau, revealed the backstory hinted at in the final confrontation and why that betrayal had the Power Broker hunting Karli throughout the series. “Sharon recruited Karli at a younger age and trained her,” explained Kellyman. “She was going to create this little army of super soldiers. In Episode 6, we learn [Sharon] wanted to control the world while I wanted to change it. That’s why Karli left and created the group, the Flag Smashers. Sharon trained Karli for everything—she’s the reason Karli knows everything she knows, fighting-wise.”

In preparing for this evolution of the powerful and badass version of Sharon Carter, VanCamp revealed, “I was just excited to be able to tell the story of where she’s been and what she’s been up to. It was important that we really define who she is now versus who she was then. Things have certainly not been easy for Sharon, in this lawless land where she had to fend for herself. For her to be thriving the way she is, it makes sense for her to be this intimidating, bigger version and for her to put on this display for the boys, it all kind of works in her favor ultimately.”

As for the scope of Sharon’s power, VanCamp detailed, “She’s orchestrating so many things from Madripoor. And as you see in Episode 6, she decides to reappear outside of Madripoor and takes matters into her own hands.”

On the decision of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes not knowing Sharon Carter’s true role, Nagelhout explained, “The conflict doesn’t really involve Sam and Bucky; she’s not out to get the two of them. She’s on her own path, her own mission. It wasn’t necessary to have to complicate her relationship with those guys. She can help them and also be the Power Broker. It was interesting to us that there be duality in the character.”

And what the final credit revealed, VanCamp hinted, “Obviously, she has a much bigger plan and it’s not for the greater good like it used to be. As the person playing the character, I understand that perspective; she doesn’t trust the government anymore and she wants to stick it to them a little bit. What that all means? I don’t know. We’ll see.”
