With Talon taking over command on The Outpost she’s now facing a lot of hard choices. The CW drama raises the stakes each episode and this time is no exception.

Also, for those who haven’t heard, you should be aware that starting next week The Outpost will be moving to Sunday nights on The CW, as confirmed by the press release for the next episode. Be sure not to miss it on its new night!

... 'The Outpost' Season 3 Episode 6 brings yet another plague to the Gallwood Outpost. First, it was the Plaguelings, and now it is these rats. At the same time, there are more threats lurking just around the corner. ...
*  *  *
Like most of its episodes this season, episode 6 of 'The Outpost' also feels like a drag. The makers are really trying out their luck by rehashing old plotlines and staying too true to character. There is hardly a sense of surprise anymore. 'The Outpost' should probably look into developing a fresh idea.

In this week's episode, we'll take some time to look at the first half of season 3 of The Outpost. With the show moving to Sunday nights on Nov. 22, this is a good time to take a look back at the first 6 episodes of this season and talk about the changes, story arcs and many fun moments of the first half of the season. We'll also talk theories and what the next 7 episodes might have in store for the viewers and the characters. Additionally, this episode of The Outpost Calling will have visit from Munt himself, Adam Johnson. He as kind enough to answer some questions sent to to cast members via audio file and we'll play that for you Friday night. So, get ready for that little treat. Just a sidenote, he's not the only audio response that you'll hear in coming episodes of The Outpost Calling.

The Outpost: New Antagonist Arrives, Yavalla Stays One Step Ahead – Review, Ep. 307
By: John Baker November 23, 2020
https://www.threeifbyspace.net/2020/11/the-outpost-new-antagonist-arrives-yavalla-stays-one-step-ahead-review-ep-307/

Quote

If episode 307 of The Outpost showed us anything, it demonstrated just how quickly things can change in The Realm. Yavalla makes her big play, a trio of our heroes seek to end the Kinj infection, and a new face infiltrates the Outpost with malice in his heart and enjoyment of deviltry on his mind. But I liked this episode a lot. It’s fun when our heroes get put back on their heels with no easy answer to solve the puzzle confronting them. It’s a time for bravery, smarts and the ability hold on. To me, this is a fascinating episode that sets up what’s to come over the next few weeks.
*  *  *
However, this episode did answer one of the questions that I, and a good score folks from social media have been batting around for a while – Sana’s Kinj. We were partly right in deducing that the Kinj never made it back to The Three. Turns out that Sana’s acolyte would not make it back to the capital. Instead, Jaaris Kromm, a Prime Order captain, relieved him of this Kinj and we get a very painful demonstration of its power to inflict mental pain – even pain that debilitates the Lu-Qiri.
*  *  *
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I found this episode to be a juicy one, like it’s the first taste of a big meal I’m going to simply love. I think Kromm is a wonderfully odious antagonist, while Yavalla seems pretty unbeatable right now. So, on two fronts, our heroes seem to be waging a war it doesn’t look as though they can win. I love it, but also have the strangest feeling we are going to lose someone a bit shocking very soon. Perhaps I’m wrong and we’ll simply have 6 more episodes of fantasy-adventure delight with not losses. But it feels like we’re building up to something big and success will depend on sacrifice. We shall see.

This episode shows both angles of a relationship. First, true friends want what is best for you, and second, some people are only looking out for themselves.
*  *  *
This really shows Zed’s depth of compassion for his fellow Blackblood. He chooses to work alongside someone he doesn’t particularly care for to keep her happy. This mirrors Tobin’s choice to marry another woman to protect Gwynn.
*  *  *
This is the leader that Wren knows Janzo can be. A man with more concern for his people than for himself. Janzo puts himself in harm’s way chancing being utterly destroyed to get food for everyone — what bravery!

I’m sure the third season of The Outpost was written and filmed before the Covid-19 pandemic really took hold, but it works as a fitting metaphor for our current predicament nonetheless. The ability for an indiscriminate virus to move sneakily among a populace is pretty integral to Yavalla’s plan to round the realm up into her so-called “United”, and in the meanwhile, the chaos that erupts from enforcing quarantines and draconian border policies is causing havoc back at the Outpost. Fantasy, like science-fiction, has always been a reflection of contemporary culture, intentionally or otherwise, and the convenient topicality has helped to give the third season of this reliably improving show a jolt of additional impact.
*  *  *
Nevertheless, “Go Ahead and Run” does have the distinct whiff of a time-killing episode designed to shuffle things into place for the back half of the season. There’s some CGI-heavy stuff involving the Lu-Qiri and the Prime Order soldier’s pilfered kinj, but that kind of action has never been where the show excels. Better is the scrap Talon, Garret, and Zed get into, but it’s a relatively light outing, all things considered. Still, there’s plenty of juicy setup that should pay off later, and I’m still invested in the overarching goings-on.

A new night for The Outpost and a new night and time for The Outpost Calling. In this episode, we'll look at some of the interesting developments that episode 307 brought to us, including a look at the new antagonist Jaaris Kromm, who has taken over lordship of The Outpost itself while Zed, Garret and Talon are at the capital looking to make a dent in Yavalla's plans - and her life. This episode gives us a look at two Kinj events that proved to be interesting, some insight into Janzo's leadership ability, and the budding rivalry of Zed and Garret in the cast of the lovely Talon. Additionally, we'll have a fun audio Q&A with Garret Spears himself, Jake Stormoen. Jake answered some questions sent to him via audio file and that's going to be 17 minutes of fun information.

The Outpost season 3, episode 8 recap – “Dying is Painful”
November 30, 2020  Jonathon Wilson
https://readysteadycut.com/2020/11/30/the-outpost-season-3-episode-8-dying-is-painful-recap/

A fair amount happened in “Dying Is Painful”. It had all the usual fantasy action that The Outpost has become pretty good at, it snipped off a few current plot threads and introduced a couple more, and it’s not entirely clear where the rest of this season’s back half is going to go – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, even if it opens up some possibilities for tedious time-killing love triangles in lieu of actual development. But this show is also very good at burning through plot really quickly, so there’s no cause for concern just yet, and we leave things with plenty of potential for the last few episodes leading into the finale.
*  *  *
The problem with this is that Jarris’s newly-freed red kinj jumps right into Falista, and given what we already know about her and her fondness for Tobin, that very much suggests to me that the love triangle between those two and Gwynn – who still, hilariously, doesn’t know that Tobin is married – is going to become rather important for the next few episodes at least.

'The Outpost' Season 3 Episode 8 Review: Love triangles at Outpost might steer The CW show into losing viewers

... But what's of interest to us are the two possible love triangles.

You've guessed that one of them is between Talon, Garret (Jake Stormoen) and Zed (Reece Ritchie). ...

The other tangled relationship we speak of is that of Gwynn, Tobin (Aaron Fontaine) and Falista. ...

'The Outpost' is on a decent run with its fantasy adventure storyline with Yavalla. But these lingering love triangles only take away from the former angle, pulling down the show. It might add a few humane, high drama scenarios in the midst of chaos, but it really leaves characters in limbo. The CW show is still going strong among its fans, but could it lose viewers' interest in the long run?

The Outpost: Death, Life & The Strange Ways Of The Kinj – Review, Ep. 308

https://www.threeifbyspace.net/2020/11/the-outpost-death-life-the-strange-ways-of-the-kinj-review-ep-308/

The more we discover about the Kinj on The Outpost, the more intrigued I get with questions that still are to be answered, or new ones that pop up. And for me, that makes for a satisfying viewing experience. Sunday’s episode 308, “Dying is Painful,” was more than satisfying given the little twists and turns that were tossed in our lap with a variety of Kinj in this episode. For my money, episode 308 was one of the more enjoyable episodes thus far in season 3A. Executive Producer Dean Devlin said on Twitter it was probably his favorite of season 3A – and I’m essentially in agreement.
*  *  *
Truthfully, there seemed to be a nice barrel-full of rage within Talon in this episode – and she wasn’t alone. Zed got a nice dose of sword-play and anger-management violence to enjoy in the episode as well. In fact, my episode MVP is Zed, who kicked some serious butt in this episode and proved to be a stealthy ally when most needed. Zed for the win? Yes!!! In fact, Zed appeared to turn into a cloaked ninja type operative as this episode went along – popping up a couple of times at opportune moments. Oh, I liked that a lot.
*  *  *
There’s been a lot of good fight action of late and this episode offered some of the best. Talon’s rage is on full display as she drops on Kromm like a load of potatoes. She cuts, she punches, she kicks and in the end guts Kromm with a nice little thrust.
*  *  *
I love the flow of this show and think that it once again has hit a good, entertaining stride. The story is interesting and with plenty of twists and turns. The characters, while pretty well fleshed out at this point, continue to offer layers that need peeling back. We’ve seen peripheral characters become more integral to the story and we’ve discovered that even the baddies who stop by for an episode or two offer some interesting perspective in what has essentially become a parasite Kinj pandemic.

With the deed done, a soul is traded for a soul bringing Gwynn back to life and out of Yavalla’s control. At this point, I ask myself if the end justifies the means.

Surprisingly, the answer is yes.

Although these prisoners have been serving their time peacefully, the loss of their lives will save countless others. The unexpected freeing of Gwynn from Yavalla’s control gives Talon and Garret a hand up in the fight. This isn’t necessarily the royal flush they need to win the game, but it keeps them from having to fold.
*  *  *
The fight that ensues between Jaaris and Talon nearly has me on my feet, cheering on our favorite Blackblood as she dishes out exactly what Jaaris deserves.

To see this man get his just desserts is a perfect ending to this rather intense episode. At each pivotal moment our heroes come across, the tension builds into a ball of fury that we, as viewers, let out along with each fist Talon lays on him.

It is an incredible relief we feel as Talon pulls her blade from Jaaris’ chest, leaving him dead. I truly feel spent.

This episode is a hard-won battle that takes us for a moral roller-coaster ride, whipping us in circles before spitting us out into victory.

This week's episode takes a deep dive into episode 308 of The Outpost, an episode that gave us plenty of Kinj-worthy moments, as well as some more questions about those little creatures. There's plenty to delve into about the Kinj and some revelations and a twist or two that centered around them in this episode. We'll also look at the issue of rage getting a little exercise via Zed and Talon, as well as Garret's ability to come face-to-face with one of his tormentors and still be able to keep his cool. Episode 308 had a lot to ponder, including the quick coming and going of Prime Order brute Jaaris Kromm and a few notes of surprise on Yavalla's face. We'll take calls, talk about the episode and more in this episode.

'The Outpost' Season 3 Episode 9 Review: Imogen Waterhouse shines as director, adds magic to average segment
By Pooja Salvi    Dec 6, 2020
https://meaww.com/the-outpost-season-3-episode-9-review-imogen-waterhouse-average-episode-tobin-the-cw-series

Quote

In the latest episode of 'The Outpost', actress Imogen Waterhouse, who plays the role of Queen Gwynn, sits on the director's seat as she takes the reigns of 'She is Not a God' in her hands. Going behind the camera and in front, Gwynn directs an instalment that puts a whole lot of focus on her and the chaos she finds herself in after escaping Yavalla's (Jaye Griffiths) kinj. Not just that, there is also ongoing romantic tension in her life as well, as the truth about Tobin (Aaron Fontaine) is also out. In an episode that is equal parts action and equal parts drama, Waterhouse surprises with her agility as a director and sufficiently impresses with a high stakes product.
*  *  *
'The Outpost' is at an attractive place right now with regards to its storyline. Characters remain the same as ever - some over-utilised and others still grossly underutilised - as the show still relies on its fan favourites to take the story forward. Its fantasy adventure content doesn't entirely turn off but shows ample scope for improvement. There is also a particular scene with Talon that we particularly like where the two sit down to reminisce. At the same time, even with Imogen's good direction this week, it continues to be the one show that runs the risk of festering in its own flaws.

The Outpost: No. 2 Escapes, The Black Kinj & The Hunt For Yavalla – Review, Ep. 309
By: John Baker December 7, 2020
https://www.threeifbyspace.net/2020/12/the-outpost-no-2-escapes-the-black-kinj-the-hunt-for-yavalla-review-ep-309/

Quote

Well, at long last, the final Kinj shoe has fallen. And its kind of a biggie type of reveal, right? Episode 309 of The Outpost had a distinctly “set up” feel to it as a lot of interesting things were put in motion. It feels like an episode that was designed to kid of wheel us into place for the mad dash across the final four episodes of this fantastic season 3A. There were surprises, shocks, impetuousness and another reminder just how poorly they guard prisoners at The Outpost.
*  *  *
For my money, the biggest tidbit that dropped from “She Is Not A God,” was the revelation of the “Black Kinj’ or the “Death Kinj.” You know me, I’ve got a little obsession with the whole Kinj construct. This one sounds particularly nasty and I wonder if it is the “ancient evil” that we have had teased our way several times this season. Mmm, not sure, but I thought the conversation between Talon and No. 2 ( of The Three) was very interesting. Kudos to Talon for her very effective information gathering technique – grab the neck and ram the face into the steel bars – worked like a charm, didn’t it?
*  *  *
Look, I know there’s a general feeling of dread about Falista on the social media wires, but I like this character (I see you Georgia May Foote). Yes, her stroll into the Nightshade to formally announce that she and Tobin are married was, to put it mildly, a pure power play on her part. She’s staking out her territory and letting Gwynn know who is in charge of Tobin (at least for now). Sure, I could see that being unpleasant for Tobin-Gwynn fans, but I like that bravado, that full-on brashness that leaves no room for gray area. She’s smart, she’s strong, she’s brash and she’s not afraid to let even a queen know the score. I find that an enjoyable quality.

And while that little “dropping of the bombshell” moment may have really tossed some dirt on the Gwynn garden, it didn’t bother me a whole lot. Falista, I like you. I also like that, despite this arranged marriage, she truly does have a decent investment in Tobin being the man and king he could be. Falista is no fool, she knows where Tobin’s heart (and Gwynn’s) rests for now, but she’s in this deal for the long haul and that scene later in The Nightshade where she essentially gives Tobin a verbal truth bomb was really fun.
*  *  *
An interesting side note to me was the Gwynn-Garret reminisce moments. Gwynn is hurt and confused by Tobin’s decision (though I completely get why he felt compelled to do it for Gwynn) and Garret isn’t on the various hunts for Yavalla. That must be galling for him, though the reasoning was spot-on. Together  in the throne room, they remember their youth together, the thoughts and emotions of their hearts, and we see a flicker of the attraction they had for each other long before. It’s interesting that Garret admits that he understood from the first that Gwynn was not meant for him. That seems to catch Gwynn by surprise a bit. Interesting how she doesn’t dial into the class system at times. It’s refreshing on some levels.
*  *  *
I admit, that as they worked through the nervousness of their feelings, the awkwardness of emotions re-emerging, I wondered if they, the left behinds, might do something about those feelings? Would that be a good decision? No way. That would simply pile complications and trouble on top of everything else. Still, there was a moment there where I wondered, “What are these two contemplating as they are left all alone together?” Mmmm, that wouldn’t be good, no way.

The Outpost Review: She is Not a God (Season 3 Episode 9)
December 7, 2020   Charles E Henning
https://telltaletv.com/2020/12/the-outpost-review-she-is-not-a-god-season-3-episode-9/

Quote

The Outpost Season 3 Episode 9, “She is Not a God,” starts with Gwynn making a major decision. As we know from seasons past, Gwynn’s decisions often come back to bite her in the rear. This decision is no different, and Zed even warns her ahead of time.
*  *  *
Instead, Gwynn only asks them to do one simple task. These men need to pledge loyalty to Gwynn and The Outpost.
*  *  *
Using that hate, Two attempts to shame Talon for her actions on freeing Yavalla. The sad part is that Two isn’t completely wrong.

Talon did whatever she could to help the people of The Outpost, but eventually, she got stuck in a corner. Her love for her friends wasn’t a mistake per se, but it is easy to view it as one through someone else’s eyes.
*  *  *
Both Gwynn and Talon have a decent amount of blood on their hands. Their well-intended gambles never paid-off, at least not the way they intended. Knowing this should all but destroy them.
*  *  *
Instead of being defeated by their own actions, they rise up stronger learning from their mistakes and refusing to lower their heads in misery. These two wonderful protagonists are doing it right.
*  *  *
I’m going to go ahead and say that Falista would have made a great coach. Her quasi pep talk hits all the right notes, at first talking down to Tobin but then giving him the potential to get better.

This week we will look at the goings-on of episode 309 of The Outpost. First and foremost, we see the shoe drop on the 7th Kinj. Where in the world, or realm, might the Black Kinj be hiding and once found, what it might be capable of doing? Also known as the "death" Kinj, there's plenty of questions about this little revelation in this episode and we'll explore it. Also on tap will be a look at our two teams looking to either kill or cure Yavalla. Additionally, Tobin and Falista, who dropped the marriage thing with some force, have also left The Outpost to make their "mark" somewhere in the realm. But before we talk, we'll get a chance to listen to an audio file that Reece Ritchie (Zed himself) sent over recently. There's plenty of good stuff in this week's episode, so tune in.

We see Falista flex her kinj here, which gives Gwynn a bad headache, but it’s not entirely clear whether Falista even knows what it is or has any real plans for what to do with it. It seems in this instance it was triggered inadvertently by emotion. It’s difficult to say, though.

Speaking of kinjes, Yavalla, through Wren, learns of Gwynn’s revival and sends one of the United to infect her again, though Garret is able to save her. This is perhaps why, later, she installs him as her chief advisor rather than Tobin, thus depriving him of the sense of usefulness he so clearly covets. It’s difficult to know how this will affect him going forward, but I’m glad it hasn’t made him irrational towards Garret, or even Falista, who he apologizes to for shouting after explaining to her that he can’t make his own way in the world if she keeps trying to interfere. The relationship between these two continues to be a bit weird, since I’ve always felt like Falista’s feelings for him are pretty genuine. I guess the question is just how far she’s willing to go for “him”, and thus herself.

'The Outpost' Season 3 Episode 10: Who has the Black kinj? Fans suggest [______] holds the deadly power

Ever since Talon (Jessica Green) discovered the existence of the Black kinj, there is a lot of curiosity in 'The Outpost' fandom. A powerful, deadly kinj such as this one is no cakewalk. In the last episode, the show revealed the Black kinj aka the Death Kinj, whose possession can allow its owner to kill anyone and everyone who comes in he/ she comes in contact with.

Talon is informed that this seventh kinj was long exiled to the Plain of Ashes and that since then, no one has found it. It was believed to have been long dead but all this talk of it has us thinking that's hardly the case. So now, even with everything that is going on at the Gallwood Outpost, Talon will be going after the Black kinj. But where will she be headed - where is the Black kinj? If the Prime Order's Three don't know about it, she can't be sure. But this has got us thinking if Talon's father holds the Black kinj in his possession. Because we can just tell you this is coming.

We have only ever heard of her father - we've never seen him nor have we any idea of who/ what he really is. But fans of the show might have figured out the whereabouts of this powerful kinj. Many fans believe that Talon's father actually holds the power. "Someone elsewhere suggested that Talon's dad has the black kinj, which is why he lives alone," one fan shared on Reddit. "Whatever the case, I get the impression we're going to meet him sooner or later."

This is a completely possible development that will connect most major characters on 'The Outpost'. Yavalla (Jaye Griffiths) probably lied about the Black Kinj altogether. If the Three know that it was in the Plain of Ashes, Yavalla would have known too. She deliberately hid it from Talon to win her trust and then betray her like this.
*  *  *
A fan pointed out on Reddit that Talon and Wren (Izuka Hoyle) might be half-sister with Yavalla being her step-mother. "Part of me has a sneaking suspicion that Talon’s father and Wren’s father might be the same man. Seems like the kind of soap opera twist the show would pull, making Talon and Wren half-sister".

The Outpost Review: From Paradise to Hell and Back (Season 3 Episode 10)

If we are being honest with ourselves, we understand that not all relationships are created equal. For every loving and positive relationship we see, we know someone else with a negative connection. The Outpost Season 3 Episode 10, “From Paradise to Hell and Back,” examines the inner workings of these more toxic relationships exposing the lies we tend to believe in the name of love.
*  *  *
For as toxic as Wren’s relationship is with Yavalla, Yavalla’s relationship with The United is even worse. Their forced union paints a metaphoric picture of an abusive relationship.
*  *  *
Gwynn loves Tobin, and Tobin loves Gwynn. Falista, on the other hand, holds to the past when she and Tobin were together. Although she wants what is best for Tobin, she doesn’t have the pure love Tobin has for Gwynn.

This love triangle is fun to watch as heat rises between the three, but I definitely wouldn’t want to be a part of it.

The Outpost: Yavalla Stakes A Godhood Claim, Gwynn Delivers A Shocker – Review, Ep. 310

With only three more episodes left in season 3A, it looks like the Gallwood Outpost is going to be the scene of yet another battle. That is if Yavalla has her way. And as we sit here right now, it would seem her way has some level of divinity connected with it. Either that or she’s a remarkable healer. There’s a welling up of momentum in this episode that feels as though it’s about to send us hurtling to something pretty wild by the time this thing ends in January. What we did learn in this episode is that neither fire nor beheading will keep Yavalla from her appointed rounds as the purveyor of The United way. And if that doesn’t worry everyone, something’s wrong. Very wrong.
*  *  *
I thought there was an interesting moment when Yavalla was looking through Wren’s mind and she got snippets of what’s going on at the Outpost. When she came to the memory of No. 2, she kind of reacted with a start. I’m starting to get the distinct impression that there is a tie-in between The Three, the Blackbloods (and particularly Yavalla), Talon’s mom and dad, Talon herself and I’ll add Zed to that mix. There’s something that binds all these elements together and I don’t buy Yavalla’s explanation about her dad to Talon early on. No, I do not.
*  *  *
Meanwhile, away from the greenwood, Garret is trying to make himself useful to Gwynn even though he’d much rather be out in the realm pillaging Yavalla’s world. He works on defenses for the Outpost and he and Gwynn have a nice little moment where she needs a hug and he reaffirms his romantic fealty to Talon. Turns out, Gwynn isn’t looking for love in all the wrong places, but simply needs reassurance from someone she holds in great regard. So that kind of settles that – Gwynn and Garret are in the friend zone and they like it that way.

Whew, that was bothering some folks. But now you know, with Gwynn vulnerable and in his arms, Garret demonstrates a chivalrous and honorable side that is very much an early Garret trademark. So, stop the rumors, the kids are alright. Friend zone engaged.
*  *  *
And then when Falista gets involved – wow! Look, I know there are a lot of fans that have taken to disliking Falista, but I think she’s a load of fun. She’s strong-willed, she’s a bit manipulative, and she supports her man, even though that support is often coming from a pushy self-interest place. She’s not just behind Tobin supporting him, she’s pushing him and pushing his buttons to get him activated into action that she has identified as what is needed. There is a great moment in this episode where Tobin kind of has it out with her and makes it clear that the manipulation and politicking for him are not what he wants.

The Outpost Calling - 12/15/20

Quote

During this week's episode, we take a long look at Yavalla and her apparent inability to die. Despite Zed and Talon's best efforts with fire and blade, Yavalla continues to be able to avoid death with a hearty laugh and cold smile. We'll talk about her escape from death and the impending war on the Outpost she now proposes to unleash. We'll also talk the close call that Wren and Janzo had, and lament the infection of Munt, who was not able to be rescued during this episode. What might it be like for Janzo to face Munt in the heat of battle at the Outpost? Tobin and Falista returned to the Outpost with wagons laden with food, but Gwynn was not in a forgiving or understanding mood, so that little three-some of stress continues to be an interesting topic, particularly at the end of the episode when Gwynn turns the tables with a stunning announcement.

The Outpost Season 3 Episode 11, “The Hardest Part of Being Queen,” is ultimately a connective piece of the season. While many exciting things happen, the sheer drama of it all is what makes the episode quite entertaining.

Exciting fight scenes, emotional turmoil between a majority of the cast, and the honest explanation of feelings for one another takes what could have been a mere filler episode into the heights of one of the best episodes of the season.
*  *  *
All of Talon’s friends feel this is a suicide mission.

True friends learn to live with our bullheadedness. They know when to push ahead, and when to stand aside. They see our true motives and act accordingly.

On the surface, Falista appears to be a power-hungry diva, but underneath she is a frightened child. She doesn’t know what is going on inside of her and wants free from this dangerous kinj at any cost.

Gwynn, Garret, Tobin, and the others, all know what makes a true friendship — riding out the storm together.

The Outpost: New Twists Set Things In Motion Toward Finale – Review, Ep. 311

Ah, at last, the search for the Black Kinj has been fully entwined with the mystery of Talon’s father. Oh, how I have yearned for this very thing to happen and for the chance to clear up a boatload of mystery surrounding everyone’s connection to both – Kinj, “dad,” Yavalla, etc. I must admit, while episode 311 didn’t pack a ton of “wow” power in it, there were more than enough little bits and bobs of information dropped that I couldn’t help but be wonderfully intrigued. Oh yes, this thing is about to get really juicy.
*  *  *
This is just a personal pet peeve, but I’m beginning to think Queen Gwynn needs to do some flogging of her guards and security forces. I’ve lost track of how many people have broken out of the dungeons, and this episode gave us a glimpse into the capabilities of the gate guards – and it ain’t pretty. Because of a snake oil salesman that peddled false curative potions, as well as a love-sick guard, the United have now infiltrated the Outpost – in force. I can’t say I’m too impressed with the “seal the city tight’ execution that went on, but I suppose it could be worse. Wait, with The United in the Outpost, I guess it likely will get worse, right. Security certainly isn’t what it once was, I guess.
*  *  *
No, I didn’t see that one coming and it certainly opens up a range of possibilities, doesn’t it? Falista, in the span of one episode, has seen a nearly total recalibration of her personality, her values and her way of thinking and behaving. She’s been humbled and it looks good on her. I’m really enjoying the work of Georgia May Foote since she’s come on the scene. A character that keeps things tingling and somewhat unexpected. Good stuff.
*  *  *
My point is, that while we may look at Janzo as this comedic figure within The Outpost, look a little deeper and you find an actor putting together a plethora of layered and subtle work within the mere “acting” of Janzo. But yes, his exposing of the charlatan was fun and brilliantly done. And remember, it wasn’t done simply to expose a liar, it was done because Janzo knows this snake oil salesman is putting the Outpost in danger – which comes to fruition.
*  *  *
I am very excited about this whole trip to the Plain of Ashes. Talon’s dad, Zed’s brother, Wren and Yavalla’s relationship to the father, box and black Kinj, and just the chance to explore this place a little more. We know that Yavalla is marching on the Outpost with her army of The United – funny how these peace and harmony despotic rulers seem to need not only godhood, but plenty of bloodshed. Seems to be a pattern with these delusional folks. Still, there’s a battle coming and now with infected members of her cult inside the Outpost, there’s a lot of be worried about. Speaking of worried, I worry about the fate of Munt. It was good to see Warlita show up in this episode and to learn just how she cares for the big guy. I worry about what will happen when Munt arrives at the Outpost and perhaps comes face-to-face with someone he cares about.

During this Christmas week episode, we'll take a look at the goings-on at The Outpost in episode 311. It looks like we are going to take a trip to the Plain of Ashes as Talon, Zed and Wren step through a portal in what seems like a vain attempt to locatae Talon's father - if alive - and find the whereabouts of the Black Kinj. The hope is that Kinj will have the power to destroy Yavalla, even as her operatives find a way into the Outpost as they get ready to attack. At last, the loose threads of Talon's dad, the black box, the death Kinj, Wren, Zed and more may start to be coming together. What that tapestry  may look like when completed, anyone knows. We'll take a look at Falista and her struggle with the red Kinj and Tobin's divided feelings, Gwynn's own struggle and a bit of redemption for everyone when cooler heads prevail. There are only three episodes left (including 311) until season 3A finishes, so we'll talk about what may or may not be coming and take phone calls to hear from others who may have some thoughts.

The Outpost Season 3, Episode 11: Can Falista be trusted?
by Neda Mostafavi     December 24, 2020
https://hiddenremote.com/2020/12/23/outpost-season-3-episode-11-can-falista-trusted/

Quote

The Outpost keeps getting better and better every week, adding more drama and suspense with each episode. Along with more action, the CW fantasy drama has also added a host of new characters this season.

Falista of Relman, played by Georgia May Foote, is one of the newest additions and one of the most intriguing. She’s beautiful, smart, and powerful but there’s a lot going on beneath the surface.

Falista is cunning and a bit manipulative and willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants, which currently is Tobin. So now that she has the power of the Red Kinj inside her, can she be trusted or is everyone in The Outpost in danger?
*  *  *
Falista is so moved by Gwynn’s wisdom and kindness that she actually bows down to her and releases Tobin from his promise to her so that he can be free to be with Gwynn. Perhaps we’ve all misjudged Falista and maybe she isn’t so bad after all. The seemingly cold-hearted characters who initially are only out for themselves but secretly care for others deep down can be the most interesting. Falista has a lot of potential to be a great character.
*  *  *
Falista had some major character development within this episode which was fantastic to see. Since her entrance on the show, she was not presented as someone entirely likable, but that could all change now. If Falista truly is determined to understand her kinj and use it for good and to be loyal to both Gwynn and Tobin then she could be the ally they need against Yavalla and The United.

However, as Talon warned her, the previous owners of the Red Kinj all turned out to be quite evil. And Falista has been known to have a temper. If she cannot control her outbursts, or she gives in to the anger and decides to willingly hurt someone, then she could be one of the greatest threats to The Outpost. Especially since Tobin still has affection for her and won’t let anyone hurt her.

The Outpost season 3, episode 11 recap – “The Hardest Part of Being Queen”

https://readysteadycut.com/2020/12/20/the-outpost-season-3-episode-11-the-hardest-part-of-being-queen-recap/

Quote

While at first blush it seems a bit like a filler episode, “The Hardest Part of Being Queen” was really a pretty solid bit of character-driven storytelling that tested relationships and helped to flesh out the context in which life-and-death decisions are being made in and around The Outpost.

Of particular note is the theme of friendships, especially those of Gwynn and Garret, and Garret and Tobin, and Tobin and Falista. There are a lot of parallels and rivalries, but ultimately more of the former. Falista, a noblewoman in her own right, didn’t marry Tobin for his power but because she loves him; this is confirmed in a later plot point when she’s willing to relinquish her kinj even after learning of – and inadvertently displaying – its power. But Tobin is in love with Gwynn, not Falista, which is something that both come to terms with by the end of the episode. In the meantime, Garret and Tobin’s friendship is tested by being pushed and pulled in this royal ruckus, and Gwynn has to learn to understand that the affection between Tobin and Falista is very similar to the affection she and Garret share – childhood friends with a romantic past who have grown into loving someone else.
*  *  *
Gwynn being merciful to Falista even after what looked very much like a treasonous act of aggression, and given both the past and the current situation with Yavalla, is enough to show Falista what Tobin sees in her. It’s part of the reason why she’s willing to let Tobin free from their marital bonds but keep her army; she sees why he loves her, and knows that he won’t stop doing so, but also respects Gwynn’s compassion herself. Everyone comes out of The Outpost season 3, episode 11 having learned more about each other. And it sets Falista on a path of learning how to control her kinj, even if it still seems a bit odd to let her roam around with it given its power.

'The Outpost' Season 3 Episode 12: Is Tobin dead? Here's why his fate is sealed and how he could return
By Alakananda Bandyopadhyay     Dec 27, 2020
https://meaww.com/the-outpost-season-3-episode-12-tobin-dead-reasons-theories-return-the-cw

Quote

As we inch closer and closer to the finale of today's insanely popular dystopian saga 'The Outpost', everything turns into a twisted tale of confusion, betrayal, and loss with war waging against the Blackbloods. In what looks like a repeat of The CW's 'Supernatural' finale, Season 3's Episode 12 of 'The Outpost' sees fan-favorite character Tobin get swarmed by knives and arrows, leaving us with the inevitable dread surrounding whether Tobin survives, or actually dies following this episode titled 'Where Death Lives'.
*  *  *
It has been a hard pill to swallow for the fandom and soon denial tuned into acceptance, and alternate theories about how Tobin could be brought back to life started coming up on Twitter. "Because I refuse to accept Tobin's death, this is where I hypothesize that Talon's dad is going to put the black kinj into his dead body and resurrect him from the dead."
*  *  *
Some fans, however, found forgiveness in their hearts for Tobin choosing Falista over Gwynn despite being with the latter for the most parts. When that teasing kiss happened between Tobin and Falista fans quipped about having their priorities set amidst a war waging on, but now it all makes sense as gigantic overshadowing. "Makes perfect sense they made Tobin choose Falista if he was gonna die because why put more heartbreak unto Gwynn," wrote one.
*  *  *
Others are not taking the news kindly, and that's not just the usual heartbreak as the alternative. In fact, they are very angry at the network, as one of them pointed out: "So you spend most of the season making Tobin suffer only to kill him."
*  *  *
To sum it up, yes Tobin is dead, and yes there are still chances that he might be brought back to life. But the odds don't quite look in his favor, everything seems to have been building up for this epic end in his arc.

The Outpost: Yavalla’s Gambit, Tobin’s Death & Talon’s Father – Review, Ep. 312

https://www.threeifbyspace.net/2020/12/the-outpost-yavallas-gambit-tobins-death-talons-father-review-ep-312/

Quote

Well, the gut punch of losing The Mistress in season 2 was replayed with heart-wrenching anguish in episode 312 of The Outpost. And I blame Executive Producer Dean Develin and the writers for it. Curse your creative, yet enjoyable, juices.
*  *  *
Watching Tobin die in the arms of Falista as they barricaded themselves in to stay away from The United, which had infiltrated The Outpost, was a tough go. In the end, Falista and Tobin found a common ground that you wouldn’t have thought they’d stand upon. It was a crushing moment, to be sure, and I’ll miss the hell out of Tobin. He was a character that showed up to the Outpost as a hard-drinking, immature man-child and slowly, before our eyes, turned into something noble and enjoyable.

His is a hard loss, to my mind, but I have a funny feeling that he may not be the last one. If we learned anything from last season, the losses can mount in a very uncomfortable way on this damn show. I was glad to see that Tobin recommitted to his marriage to Falista and died saving her life. In the end, the hard-drinking, wenching, unpleasant baron turned into a noble, brave and deserving-of-his-title man of the realm. His loss will certainly be felt within the close quarters of his friends.
*  *  *
Now face-to-face with her dad with a trident impaling him, I wonder what she truly feels at this moment? And, what illumination can be gained from dad regarding the Black Kinj – and Yavalla? And what of Corven’s excited fear about that stone box he demanded they not look at? That would seem to be a big hint of sorts, too. It’s clear Yavalla has not been straight-forward with anyone and I begin to suspect the White Kinj she has is accentuating her natural tendencies. In short, she’s always wanted to be worshipped as a god and lord it over both Blackbloods and humans. But what about the Greyskins? I wonder if they will still play a part.
*  *  *
The question I ask is the same one that Talon asked, why would her father leave the family to live in lava tube caves away from everyone? There is clearly more to the Blackblood banishment to the Plain of Ashes than we know. Did Talon’s mom and dad grasp the evil plans that Yavalla had in her heart and tricked her and her followers through the portal? Was Talon’s dad’s job to safeguard an instrument that would keep them there? Still so many unanswered questions. I love it. And I hate it.

In tonight's episode, we'll look at episode 312 of The Outpost. In this penultimate episode, The Outpost continues an unpleasant tradition of killing off one of its main characters. We'll take a look at Tobin's transformation and the way he went out in this episode - saving Falista even after confessing his renewed love for her. It was a tough one to take, so we'll talk about what it might all mean down the road. We'll also look at the discovery of Talon's dad impaled on a cave floor, The United overrunning the Outpost, and the fact that Garret appears to have gotten some of his swagger back. Also, what is going on with Munt. With one episode remaining in season 3A, we'll talk theories about where it all might lead in the future.

The Outpost Review: Where Death Lives (Season 3 Episode 12)

The Outpost Season 3 Episode 12, “Where Death Lives,” is an intense episode that helps fill in some of our favorite heroes’ backstories. These moments are not only informative, but emotional as well.
*  *  *
Before I get too far, I must admit I have a complaint about The Plane of Ashes. This land seems fake.

In no way do I get the feeling that anyone would be able to live here for any extended amount of time. At the least, there isn’t even any animal or foliage around for subsistence.
*  *  *
Through bickering and flat-out yelling, Wren, Zed, and Corven uncover pieces of their past that have led them to their current state. At first, the truth hurts, but eventually it brings healing.
*  *  *
Growing up, Gwynn and Garret were inseparable. Two young lovebirds enjoying their early years in each other’s arms. You can’t get much more romantic than that.
*  *  *
Gwynn finally understands that Falsita and Tobin’s relationship is quite similar to her relationship with Garret. The only difference is that Tobin and Falista have the opportunity to live happily ever after. Who is she to stand in their way?
*  *  *
If Talon listens to others, writing off the possibility her father could still be alive, Talon will forever live her life in “what if” scenarios. She faces the past, the hurt, and raw emotion. She knows what must be done.
*  *  *
As the episode wraps up, we are left emotionally spent. Our heroes have taught us yet another valuable lesson so that we don’t have to live it out the hard way.

Our past doesn’t define us, but it can help us become who we truly are.

The Outpost Season 3, Episode 12: Tobin’s tragic sacrifice
by Neda Mostafavi     December 30, 2020
https://hiddenremote.com/2020/12/30/the-outpost-season-3-episode-12-tobin/

Quote

After seeing Gwynn and Garret smiling and teasing each other Tobin seems to mistakenly believe that the two have rekindled their feelings for each other. He must be unaware of #Garron and the fact that Garret told Talon that she was the only one for him right before she left.

Tobin’s misunderstanding and his remaining affection for Falista from their childhood lead him to officially end his relationship with Gwynn and commit to Falista. Gwynn is clearly heartbroken, as was I because I was totally rooting for Gwynn and Tobin, but Falista was thrilled and overjoyed.
*  *  *
Janzo is summoned but it’s too late because as smart as he is even Janzo can’t reverse death. Tobin tragically dies in Falista’s arms as Gwynn can do nothing but watch and weep. Tobin’s death was not something I expected, as I fully expected him to eventually reunite with Gwynn, and seeing Gwynn and Falista’s pain made it hurt even more.

Is Tobin really gone for good though? It’s hard to say. He seems quite dead at the moment, but you have to look no further than Garret Spears to know that death isn’t always permanent in The Outpost. In fact, Gwynn and Tobin died and came back just mere episodes ago.

The Green Kinj used by Two is still out there, and we have yet to explore the full powers of the Black Kinj which is said to control death. In a show like The Outpost there are plenty of ways Tobin could come back should the writers choose to bring the character back in Season 4.

In the meantime, we’ll say thank you Aaron Fontaine for portraying Tobin so well and RIP Baron Tobin Aegisford. You will be missed (until you maybe return one day).

Even among all this, there’s still time for some relationship drama. Tobin tells Gwynn that Falista has agreed to let him keep her army but release him from their marriage, which should be good news, but her selflessness caused his old feelings for her to flood back and he has decided to stay with her. I’m not sure he means a word of this, but here we are, and by the end of “Where Death Lives” it won’t matter anyway.
*  *  *
But the kinj can’t protect Tobin from the knife and two arrows he takes during their escape, and for the first time in what feels like ages, we lose a major character. Tobin’s dying wish is for Falista to use her power to protect the queen, which should give her something to do going forwards. A heroic self-sacrifice in the finale? We’ll have to wait and see.

And that isn’t all, since in the Plane of Ashes, the gang finds the body of Talon’s father, impaled by many spears. But he has barely even decomposed, and we soon find out why — he’s alive. Surely all this can’t be wrapped up in just one remaining episode?

Did 'The Outpost' Season 3 finale have a White Walker ripoff? Fans ask 'who's the Game of Thrones-like dead guy?'

After a hard-hitting episode full of drama, intrigue, mystery and suspense, 'The Outpost' Season 3 finally came to an end. The battle with Yavalla (Jaye Griffiths) is now over for good. But that was not before the loss of countless lives of important characters that now leave the future of the storyline uncertain. Fans of the show can predict nothing of what 'The Outpost' has in store except simply looking forward to new episodes. At the end of Season 3, Gwynn's (Imogen Waterhouse) death left fans heartbroken — now who would rule over the Outpost and the realm justly?
*  *  *
Fans were especially sad at the loss of Gwynn - Talon and her friendship was definitely one of the highlights of the show. "Talon and Gwynn are absolutely breaking me. I’ve always loved their moments and this one is the best. #theoutpost," a fan tweeted.
*  *  *
But 'The Outpost' Season 3 did not just have a bittersweet ending, it has very carefully paved the way for Season 4 by setting up what looks like key character introductions. The black kinj and the white kinj destroyed each other leading to the deaths of the bearers Gwynn and Yavalla respectively. But now it looks like this destruction has brought on more evil — the gods are unleashed, it is pointed out. And fans are left every bit intrigued.

"What a season finale! I am so glad season 3b or season 4, whatever is, is already in production because I think I might die if things ended like this. What an amazing season by writers, directors, actors, & all the crew. Superlative job! Thank you! #TheOutpost #TheOutpostSeries," a fan tweeted.
*  *  *
Others are asking the more important questions. "@JakeStormoen but who is this Game of Thrones-like dead Guy from the grave? I can't believe the episode is over... what a blast!!!#TheOutpost #Blackbloods." Truth be told, he did look like a White Walker ripoff. The season ended on a montage of the black and white kinjs traveling across the globe and attaching themselves on the heads of two mummified bodies — these must be the aforementioned gods. What the hell are they going to unleash now?
*  *  *
Official release dates of the upcoming episodes are not yet revealed, but with the show already scoring an early renewal ahead of Season 3 airing, it is now only a matter of time.

The Outpost: Death Stalks The Outpost In Season Finale – Review, Ep. 313
By: John Baker    January 4, 2021

Quote

It’s safe to say that the season 3A finale of The Outpost wasn’t one of the lightest and joy-filled finales I’ve ever seen. There was a darkness, a sadness that ran through this marvelous final episode that really pulled me in and fostered an even deeper appreciation for the guts this show likes to show. Dean Devlin and crew pulled off a pretty interesting finale and I have to say – I really liked the darker tone. It was unexpected, which I enjoyed.

No, there were plenty of things occurring during the run of this episode that made one pause and wonder “What’s next?” The Outpost, aside from being a fantasy-adventure offering, has always been about family – the family you were born into, fell into, or simply formed around yourself. Last season we saw that family, that wonderfully dysfunctional family, demonstrate just how tight those familial ties bind when The Mistress was killed.
*  *  *
In this year’s finale, “Violence is Futile,” we get another loss. This one, like last season’s, comes in a moment of sacrifice borne out of duty and love for that family. We lost Queen Gwynn, my friends. We lost her in one long jump of a moment that concluded with her hands around Yavalla’s throat and the black and white Kinjes meeting at last. Gwynn destroyed Yavalla in that moment, but also sacrificed herself in the process, putting an emotional capper on an episode with probably more emotional moments than any episode we’ve seen of The Outpost thus far.
*  *  *
Even if that makes it necessary that she sacrifice her life for the good of her friends and her people – her family. It truly was a “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one” moment. Well done, Ms. Waterhouse. You were superb in this role and your loss was a gut-punch to fans of this show. You will be missed and yours is a void that should be interesting to see filled. Hail, Queen Gwynn!!! The social media reaction to this death, and the episode as a whole, has been pretty animated. That’s fun.
*  *  *
This family, this odd-ball, put-together family had lost a vital member and reading the looks on Garret and Talon’s faces was a priceless display of pain and sorrow bubbling to the surface. I thought Jake Stormoen and Jess Green really delivered some intense sadness that was palpable through the screen, It was heart-breaking in its devastation. Gwynn’s death will alter things forever.
*  *  *
But what’s more ominous for our heroes, even as the newly freed people of The Realm bend a knee towards Talon, whom they have silently chosen as their leader, is that No. 2 and No. 3 watch all that has transpired from a hilltop and note that things haven’t ended, but have been set in motion. The black and white Kinjes aren’t dead, they are traveling. No. 2 notes that what has happened at The Outpost will now awaken the Gods, and we see the respective Kinjes travel to separate crypts where they imbed themselves in the foreheads of two very, very unpleasant looking beings.

I’m just guessing here, but I think we got a glimpse of our season 3B antagonists. I’ll say it again, I think there is a secret sect behind The Three and the Prime Order, which was trying to gather all the Kinjes in earlier days (they don’t seem to have been all that successful, getting only 3 of the 7). I’m curious how they play into these new “entities” that we were exposed to in the episode’s final moments.
*  *  *
Look, I don’t think there’s any doubt that The Outpost has gotten progressively better from one season to another. It has progressed, it has matured, it has become more intricate and interesting, all without sacrificing the fun storytelling that is such a pleasure to enjoy week to week.

The Outpost Review: Violence Is Futile (Season 3 Episode 13)

The Outpost Season 3 Episode 13, “Violence Is Futile,” brings us to the climatic conclusion of the season. With stakes higher than ever, everyone must sacrifice something to triumph through tragedy.
*  *  *
Talon’s forgiving heart sees this all for what it is. She has no taste for holding grudges as shown by her relationship with Zed, Garret, and Gwynn. Now that he is back in her life, she wants Sai-Vek to stay there.
*  *  *
The Outpost is entirely outnumbered by The United. Falista and Janzo are down for the count, Gwynn is cornered, and the possibility of failure is higher than ever. I can feel the desperation rising inside of me.
*  *  *
The tension between the mother and daughter rivals Garret and Zed’s sword fight. Both are excitingly terrifying in the best of ways.
*  *  *
Without a kinj, she alone can receive Sai-Vek’s power. Without a second thought, she accepts it.

Immediately my heart is crushed. The Queen of The Outpost finally earns her title.

Throughout each season of The Outpost Gwynn has made mistake after mistake, trusting her heart over her head and giving second chances to those who deserve none.

Each time she has meant well and learned lessons along the way, leading her to this very moment — her final decision to save the kingdom.
*  *  *
The honor of dying for your people is reserved for only the greatest of rulers, and Gwynn proves herself to be one of the elite.

The Outpost season 3, episode 13 recap – “Violence is Futile” ending explained

It’s kind of amazing how far The Outpost has come, at least for me. For all of the first season and most of the second, I hated it and took great pleasure in ridiculing it, much to the annoyance of several dedicated fans. But they were obviously onto something. “Violence is Futile”, the third season finale, was a very solid episode of television by virtually any metric, and the show has long-since stopped being a guilty pleasure and started being a pleasure, period.

There are still flaws, obviously, but the strong characterization, interesting worldbuilding, and solid plotting have kept everything ticking along while the production values and choreography have gradually caught up. The CGI is still a bit wonky, but it isn’t as overused as it once was. Suddenly, the prospect of a fourth season, which is virtually guaranteed at this point, seems like a very enticing prospect.
*  *  *
That little detail pays off in the next scene when Janzo returns with the supplies. Honestly, for a second I thought that The Outpost season 3, episode 13 simply wasn’t going to pay this off and was going to imply that Janzo had snuck back out without being seen, but when he bends down to minister to Falista and Gwynn and Garret turn away to conspire, he gleefully smashes her head in with a rock. Anand Desai-Barochia’s bizarre performance as Janzo, which I’ve never much cared for, suddenly makes sense when he’s cast for a second in the villain role here. His demented expression is actually kind of terrifying. Anyway, once Yavalla realizes that the red kinj is out of action, she orders the next wave of the attack.
*  *  *
With Xaba having fought off Yavalla’s Lu-Qiri, Talon and Gwynn work together to try and free Saivek, but they’re unable to. He needs to pass the black kinj on, but since Talon can’t accept it because of her own, Gwynn makes an executive decision and grabs his hand, accepting the kinj and with it the responsibility of noble suicide in order to take down Yavalla. It’s a tearful moment, this, as Gwynn and Talon have a friendly goodbye, both realizing what needs to be done. Outside, while Yavalla is prematurely claiming victory, the girls hack their way through the United until Gwynn is able to get her Arya Stark moment, leaping through the air and landing astride Yavalla, with the parting words, “You lose, Yavalla. Die, you witch.” And just like that, both of them disintegrate.

In the aftermath of this, the United are all cured. Falista is revealed to be alive, which is disappointing since I’d have liked to see Janzo grappling with the guilt of killing her going forwards. Everyone, including Garret, Zed, and Wren, bends the knee to Talon as their new queen. And as Two and Three look on from a nearby hillside, the black and white kinjes, now united, zoom through the realm to some secret sarcophagi, where they “release the gods”, making for quite the cliffhanger.

The Outpost Season 3, Episode 13: What happened to Gwynn?
by Neda Mostafavi   January 5, 2020

The biggest shock of the episode was the fate of Gwynn, aka Queen Rosmund. So let’s discuss and break down the tragic fate of our queen.
*  *  *
On the heels of the death of Tobin last episode, Gwynn’s loss really hurts. At least we can hope they will be reunited in some sort of afterlife now. But losing a character who has been with us since the beginning is always hard. Especially a character who was so well loved. She was our queen. And in the end she did exactly what she promised, she fought til the end and did what was best for her people.

Thanks to Gwynn’s sacrifice Janzo is back to himself and able to help Falista, so at least she will live to see another day. I hope she will play a big part in the next season as she’s quickly becoming one of the most interesting new characters they’ve added. Plus, as a distant relation to Gwynn could she possibly be in line for the throne at some point? The Outpost has chosen Talon as their new leader for now and everyone bowed down to her (Go Talon!), but who can say what will happen down the line.
*  *  *
Overall, The Outpost gave us one of the best season finales I’ve seen in a while. There were battles and action as well as emotional beats and losses that made you want cry. There was also a tantalizing tease for the next season. What more could we ask? The Outpost gets better and better each episode so I can only imagine how fantastic the next season will be and I can’t wait.

5 Questions From The Outpost’s Season 3 Mid Finale
J. Young-Ju Harris   January 18, 2021
http://www.thegeekdomobserver.com/2021/01/18/5-questions-from-the-outposts-season-3-mid-finale/

Quote

1.) Who Are The Gods?
...
My guess would be that at least one of them will act as an antagonist against Talon and her burgeoning new kingdom. But it’s still very unclear what sort of threat these gods will pose. Do they have powers that are similar to the black and white kinj? Or do they have other abilities?

Another question is whether Two or any other humans or black bloods will align with the gods? Or will the gods not be interested in followers and prefer to just try and fight anyone who opposes them?
*  *  *
2.) What Does A Post-Gwynn World Look Like?
...
Talon is presumably the new queen, but how far her power extends is a bit undetermined. Is she the new ruler of the outpost? Or will she move to the capital and rule over the whole kingdom? On top of that, will she be able to unite the black bloods and humans in a way that Gwynn was unable to?
*  *  *
3.) What Will Happen With Falista?
...
On the one hand, she might choose to honor Tobin’s wish that she use her power to protect the queen by working with and alongside Talon. As I mentioned earlier, she could replace Gwynn as Talon’s go-to female friend and confidant.

On the other, Falista did mention earlier in the series that she was related to Gwynn, which would mean that she has more of a claim to the throne than Talon does, at least by blood. Maybe she will decide that the kingdom is best served with her in charge and become an antagonist to Talon.
*  *  *
4.) What Is Two Going To Do?
...
I’d also be curious to see if Two ends up meeting Falista. She’s the only other current human who can effectively wield the power of her kinj, so it’s possible she could serve as a tutor to the young noblewoman. I could see a Palpatine-Anakin like relationship between Two and Falista, with Two teaching Falista how to use her kinj but also being a corrupting influence and perhaps working to re-establish the Prime Order with the two of them at its head.
*  *  *
5.) How Will The Romances Form Up With the Cast Changes?
...
If Zed brings Corven over from the plane of ashes (and I don’t see why he wouldn’t), I could see some drama developing between him and Janzo over Wren. This could provide some comic relief as they snipe at each other or are jealous of each other, but I also like Janzo and Wren together, and I hope the writers don’t end their relationship just for the sake of some more drama.

I’m also guessing that things for Talon and Garret won’t be easy with Talon’s new role and duties. I’d also be curious to see if she too needs to choose between staying with Garret or possibly marrying someone else in order to secure an alliance against the gods or whatever new threat her kingdom faces. If that does come up, I think it would be fun to see how Talon handled that as opposed to Gwynn.

I imagine Zed and Falista will also have various romantic dramas moving forward, though it’s not clear to me in what way. I could see Garret and Falista bonding over the fact that their childhood loves both died, and maybe that developing relationship would drive Talon back towards Zed.

My hope is that we get to see Talon and Garret make a serious go of things and let the relationship drama aspect of the show move to another couple, but I have a feeling the writers will continue to pull the “will they, won’t they” line and add more trouble to the mix for those two.

Why The Outpost Is Important For Fantasy Television
J. Young-Ju Harris    July 5, 2019
http://www.thegeekdomobserver.com/2019/07/05/why-the-outpost-is-important-for-fantasy-television/

Quote

The Outpost is an epic fantasy series that debuted last year on the CW as one of the network’s few scripted summer series. Arriving to little fanfare, without a major marketing push, and during the time of year when all of the other big CW shows were on hiatus, you can be forgiven if you missed the arrival of this show.

Honestly I’d say you could even be forgiven if you stopped watching after the pilot.
*  *  *
It’s a low budget affair created by Jason Faller and Kynan Griffin, the producers behind the Kickstarter funded film series Mythica, which featured Kevin Sorbo. Perhaps fittingly, The Outpost is most reminiscent of 90’s fantasy shows like Hercules or Xena. I’m sure many people find the low production value of such a thing somewhat off-putting given the glut of high production TV at our fingertips, but personally I find this to be part of the show’s charm.

Reviews for the first season were mixed leaning negative. Robert Lloyd of the LA Times charitably wrote that the show “is humorous enough and romantic enough and as bloody as it needs to be for the international market, [and] is not completely predictable.”

CBR, on the other hand, simply titled their review “The CW Hits Rock Bottom With Fantasy Series The Outpost.” I don’t think I need to expand on any of their opinions from there.
*  *  *
So why, you might be asking, do I think a low budget show with mixed reviews at best is a show that is worth paying attention to?

Well, it’s an original epic fantasy series on network television.

For those of you not fully understanding that statement, I will highlight the words “original” and “network television.” Both its originality and the fact that its on network television make it unique, and it’s these two elements that I think make the show important.
*  *  *
The success of Game of Thrones and the subsequent grabbing up of fantasy IPs shows that there is a clear interest in these type of stories, and while the streaming and premium services out-bid each other for the rights to the most popular book series out there, I still think networks could get in on the action by looking for original epic fantasy content.

And this is why The Outpost is important: it proves that this approach can work.
*  *  *
Having an original production would create some major advantages in terms of cost for the networks. They wouldn’t need to pay for the rights to any property, and any successful show could be fully capitalized on. And I don’t think that the scope or budget for an epic fantasy show would have to be off the charts.

When people think epic fantasy I feel like they imagine quests across a world that is large and full of strange, magical creatures. But there’s no reason you couldn’t write something that was smaller in scale. The Outpost, for example, primarily takes place in one city. And what’s the fun of writing fantasy if you’re going to let yourself get cornered by the tropes? Why not have some fun playing with them a bit?
*  *  *
The Outpost will be kicking off its second season next week, a testament to the show’s ability to find an audience in the overcrowded world of peak TV, and another piece of supporting evidence to my point that the hunger for new epic fantasy content is out there. This little show that could shows that there’s potential for arguably grander productions from networks willing to take the chance something new.

Personally I’m hoping there are some execs out there willing to do just that.
