The James Bond Franchise

Spectre was awful.  The producers should have learned their lesson about continuity after the crapfest that in Quantum of Solace and that it doesn't work for Bond.  But they managed to make the same mistake twice.  Everything involving Blofeld was ridiculous as was what Bond did at the end.  Who wanted to see that?

And as people have pointed out the twist was similar to Austin Powers: Goldmember!

I am not convinced that this is a good role for Lupita. I think of Bond girls as actresses with little recognized names trying to raise their profile. Lupita has an Oscar. I know it is difficult for Black actresses in Hollywood, but surely, she should be aiming for a much higher profile leading role.

Halle Berry was a Bond girl after she won her Oscar.

It overlapped. She was nominated and won while in the process of filming Die Another Day. It's slightly different from deciding to take on the role long after having won the Oscar.

I'd love to see her in the Bond Girl role. It's ridiculous that there's only been one black girl in the series' history (yes, I know there have been a handful of others, but they were all minor girls and/or villainous Bond Girls and therefore not the one he ended up with at the end of the movie).

Valid point. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing Lupita play a Bond girl either. She should be able to take roles that aren't serious or Oscar bait. I fear though that this was perhaps going to be the producers' consolation for the unlikelihood that Idris Elba will get to play Bond.

For me Bond is best in a Cold War setting, once the Cold War ended the films lost something. The Pierce Brosnan ones were still ok but far fetched, I don't like the Daniel Craig ones at all. I think they are too much like the Bourne films now or any action film. There isn't that same level of smoothness that Roger Moore and Sean Connery had. And no doubt PC nuttery and #metoo have killed off the concept of beautiful women named after double entendre's like Pussy Galore.

This one.

The Craig films were the only times I could take this franchise seriously.

I don't think Bond was ever to be taken seriously that is why it used to be fun.

Yes.  The name many object to, Pussy Galore, is from the direct source material of Ian Fleming himself.  As was Octopussy (although I don't believe there was a character called by this name), Mary Goodnight, Kissy Suzuki, Honey Rider.  The movies simply added characters with names in similar vein... Penelope Smallbone, Holly Goodhead, Molly Warmflash, Plenty O'Toole, Wai Lin, Xenia Onatopp.  Of course, Fleming wrote in a different age and time, but I don't think he ever intended for Bond to be taken that seriously.

I'm eager to see the next Daniel Craig movie although I think he just looked so awfully old in his last outing.  There's so much speculation about who the next Bond will be, who knows.  I thought Henry Cavill or Tom Hiddleston would be good and I know their names have been on the various lists at one point or another, who knows what is true anymore.

The official cast for the new Bond (Bond 25 was released this morning)

The Bond Twitter account revealed each individually but this Rotten Tomatoes Tweet has the summary.

I know Rami Mahlek Plays the main villain, but oh how I wish it was actually Billy Magnussen who has turned his former College Frat into an International Criminal Organization. At least there have to be pretty good odds that he actually gets punched in the face.

It's a terrific cast and glad to see Jeffrey Wright back but hopefully they ditch the Spectre continuity quickly.  Whenever the Craig films has embraced continuity, they've been a creative train wreck.  It would also help if Craig didn't look visibly bored on screen like he did in Spectre.

I also want Jeffrey Wright to have more to do in the main story rather than staying on the periphery.

Great to see Billy Magnussen in the cast. Amazing how far his career has come from his days on ATWT.

He's the reason James comes out of retirement, so I'm assuming he'll be a big part of it.

I think it's disgusting that the Broccollis are waiting for Idris to age out so they can pretend it's age and not race for why they're choosing him.  By the way, Craig is 5 years older than Idris and looks about 20.

I saw a clip of some of the filming in Jamaica:

As someone with Jamaican parents, I really appreciate that they're willing to depict the grittier aspects of the island instead of the usual "white, sandy beaches and palm trees".

I haven't been to Jamaica since the 70s (!) but that scenery does bring back great memories of riding around with a guy in a Gold Label rum truck.  He would drive around the area dropping off rum at various little bars so I got to see a lot of non touristy scenery.

It's not a trailer.

But that's a pretty good trailer.

I think this is a bit misleading. First of all, this is Craig's last Bond movie, right? So it sounds to me like they're basically going to have him pass the mantle to this person by the end of the movie in some way, as a nod to the people who wanted a black or female Bond.

And then they will reboot Bond in 5 years with a new guy anyway.

They've specifically separated the concept of "007" from "James Bond". This is not giving anyone a Black or female James Bond. Not yet, anyway. Plus, "James Bond" marketing is too valuable to MGM and Sony for them to let the character lie dormant for a few years. I think much sooner--possibly this or the next film--Bond will get into a horrible accident which will require massive plastic surgery. Then the newer, amazingly younger-looking Bond will be introduced who will be White and male. I'll be surprised if 007 remains a separate person in the long run, or if the role continues to be played by Lynch. They've set it up now so 007 can change gender, ethnicity, and age in every film while Bond remains pretty much the same.

That this is being reported so many months in advance gives me the feeling it's not actually a big revelation in terms of the movie's plot. Didn't the (bare bones) official synopsis say that Bond 25 starts with James being retired from active duty? He'll be brought back on to break up the nefarious plot du jour, and I'm guessing he will be annoyed to learn that someone else has been assigned "007" in his absence.

As a non-native speaker, No Time to Die feels ambiguous.

Does it mean too busy to die, as I don't have time to die or

Does it mean this is no time to die, I still have things to do, there are important things to deal with?

Does it feel ambiguous to native speakers too? Not that it matters, I don't think these titles ever meant much. But it's been bugging me for days.

Ugh, I just read that Daniel Lewis is in the running to be the new Bond. To be blunt, he isn't sexy or charismatic enough to be Bond.

Do you mean Damian Lewis? If so, he'd be 50 by the time the next Bond came out. That seems a little old.

Daniel Day Lewis is currently 62 which would also seem too old.

Plus with DDL's method approach to roles, to be Bond he'd actually have to kill someone and that's no good for anybody.

I wouldn't put it past him.

Cinemax has been rerunning Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace lately.

CR is just about flawless. I prefer it to Skyfall (though it's an excellent film in its own right) because the latter film is too dark and gritty.

While Quantum is still, IMO, the "worst" of the Craig films, it's aged reasonably well and suffers mostly from coming up right behind a terrific film like CR.

Naomi Harris gave an interview--which I can't find--that claims that "No Time To Die" will essentially wrap up a trilogy that began with "Skyfall".

Wouldn't it be pentalogy since "Spectre" clearly referenced "Casino Royale"?
